You could look for another wall or house to take a picture off. Your original test scene gives a more real world test scenario. It's one thing that sets you apart form other lens reviewers :)
+Christopher Frost Photography I'd say the new test is too effective xD. (Details shows up well). Making (in my opinion), this lens feel too soft and too much fringing in the corners for my taste (even though I know that it is alot better lens in comparison to the ones I have) hahaha.
This video was one of my deciding factors when deciding which lens to buy. I've been using it for about a month. I love it! Thanks! Keep up the amazing work.
i've been using this lens and d750 for property interior shot for half a year now. this lens' surprisingly usable images at f1.4 plus d750's awesome low light performance, the combo is a bloody killer for handheld interior photography.
I owned this lens for 3 years. Loved it! I sold it and my 12-24 art and bought the 14-24 Sigma art for Sony because of what I do now. Lots of weight shed and I can use filters now. Still, for indoor. This lens is killer! Don’t hesitate if you can get a deal on it.
Good review, and made extra lovely with the inclusion of Christmas stuff and that adorable fluffy bunny getting up to mischief. If this is your last review before the 24th, I'll just wish you a happy Christmas here and now!
I pre-ordered this lens before it reaches the store. I love it so much! It works very well with Lightroom 6.3 to remove distortion and vignetting. It's flaring resistance performance is also impressive. The only 2 things I dislike about it is the bulb front element and super heavy weight.
+Aaron Yang Compared to Sigma ART lenses a Canon 70-200mm f4.0 feels handy and lightweight ;-) But nevertheless I like the build and image quality very much. I have just tested the Sigma 35mm f1.4 ART, its a lovely lens too.
so happy to see you reviewed this lens. I had the same reaction when I saw the announcement, now I just have to find some way to win the lottery so I can buy it :)
Thanks a ton Chris for sharing your views on this lens. I was eagerly waiting for your reviews on this glass.Again thanks a bunch. Very Impressive lens.
A bit out of topic, but that Samyang lens is simply one hell of a sharp lens. Really did an amazing job with the test chart... I think this is the first time I see Chris' test chart with a truely high calibre image quality (even with youtube compression).
It's 20mm, the vids out there will show you the coma. For this focal length, I'm impressed by its clarity. The defects are mostly trivial to manage in post.

Hey Chris, I don't know about the test chart. Although the new test chart is probably more accurate, it was part of your personal brand. I think the brick wall will be more familiar to most viewers. :)
+Jurrian :P I know, and I do agree in a way...but the wall is now two hours drive away unfortunately :-( I've tried to make the test chart a little more colourful and interesting than others!
I had this lens in 2018-19 and it was one of the sharpest lenses I ever used on a DSLR. I would buy another but I have a Sony 20mm f1.8 G lens now which is tiny and amazing so no thanks. Great lens if you can find a good deal.
Fabulous video review Chris, and what a magnificent lens. It would be a great replacement for my old Nikon 24mm f/2.8 AF-D that I use for must of my landscape work, if it excepted filters... what a shame. For landscape work you simple can't get by without ND & Grad. filters. Best wishes Chris...
Hi Chris, thank you! An impressive lens indeed although I'm very happy with my Canon EF 1.4/24mm L USM. But I'm pondering about purchasing that masterpiece.
At 2:45 the lack of filter thread and the use of polarize filters is referred. However at 20mm the effect of polarize filter when shooting the sky and clouds isn't uniform. In the case of shooting foliage or reflections the polarized effect is uniform and good. If Sigma produces a Sony version of this lens, I will buy it yesterday.
I'd like to see an old test area like your old videos because a chart up close isn't representative of real world conditions. A lot of lenses up close show field curvature. I'd rather see a shot at infinity because that's how most people use landscaping lenses.
Chris, i have watched your reviews for quite some time now. I enjoy them and love the consistency in your review process, and GREATLY appreciate your time and what you provide. Don't take this a negative comment, but I'm not diggin the new "wall replacement". it just doesn't do it for me. I understand that you have moved, but there must be another building near you that you can use? Please consider. Again, thank you for all you do.
+Nathan Marcotte Thanks for the comment. Unfortunately there's just nothing suitable nearby. There are a serious of factors, like having a public building, which is attractive, with windows in the right place, and tonnes of space in front of it for testing telephoto lenses...unfortunately, there's just nothing around. The test chart has its advantages, anyway :-)
Hey Chris, thanks for your great work =) so how i see it the 20mm 1.4 and the 35mm 1.4 are both great lenses... since i'm using APS-C which of the both would you recommend to get (first)? Thanks and God Bless!
Now I have the results. Not only with the Canon 6D, but also with the Sony A 7 II with Sigma adapter MC-11 in between. Chris, I haven't seen such sharp and brilliant pictures with aperture 1.4 before! With the Sigma adapter and the mentioned Sony you have fast lens speed along with image stabilization. How cool is that? :-)
What would you recommend if you loved the look of this lens for landscape, but really want to be able to add a ND filter? Is there a comparable in quality fast UW for FF?
Drooling at this lens... I will only have one chance at getting a new lens... so 20mm 1.4 or the 24mm 1.4? they are almost of the same price range... Confusing.. Damn you Sigma.
+truknayr23 I'd go for the 20mm since you can crop it down to a 20mm. But that's just me, as always it depends on what you're shooting. I'm doing concert photography, so a wider angle is perfect for crowd shots.
Perhaps buy a second cap, cut out the end and hot glue or epoxy on an over-sized stepping ring that would accept an over sized filter (variable ND or CPL for video etc)?
Thanks for the info in the past. I follwed some tips you mentioned & I used your videos as a reference to get the Tokia 11-20mm f.2.8 After a three days with it I took it back to the store. Terrible in lowlight, or is it just me? I already own a Sigma 17-50mm f.2.8 ( and a 70-200mm f.2.8) so I was looking for a positive difference in light and focussing rapidly on my canon 70d in wide angular situations but where light is an issue. What a disappointment..! I have now gone for the sigma 20mm f1.4 over the 24mm version. I do believe this is going to enlighten me indeed. Once again, your video showed me the light! (Pardon the puns!) But I aim to please....Have an great day and stay foccussed. Regards sir!
Hello dear! Very nice review! I want to buy a lens for my Canon 250D . I will use it more indoor video recording but also for photography. Do you suggest this or sigma 18-35 f 1.8 ? This model is cheaper than 18-35 1.8 here I live. But the quality is more important! As my camera is not full frame which is best for me? Sincerely.
hi christopher, i wonder about the samyang 20mm. is this still a new lens? since u could not make a review of, would like to know ur opinion! keep up the great work. kind regards
The wall is gone and we are bloody mad about it. Pray on it but there are more structures that will show CA besides just windows, especially when you are pixel peeping.
That town that you showed at the end is very beautiful. Is that the place you live now? What country is it in? I hope to one day get to see a place like that.
Hey, Cristopher! Which lens suits time-lapse or hyper-lapse shooting format? Thank you for your video, I am your long term subscriber, you already helped with my 50mm choice =)
Hi Chris. Love your videos. Ive just moved to Sony A7III for wildlife and landscape photography from Canon. I used to use a Sigma 10-20mm on my old Canon 7dmk2 and liked that lens a lot. Although it had its flaws I found it became my go to landscape lens. Ive got a Sony 28-70 kit lens but want something like my old 10-20mm. A friend of mine has bought the lens in your video and his pictures are simply amazing with it. Trying to get my head around the wideness equivalent to the 10-20mm. I use an MC-11 with my Sigma 150-600mm and works like a dream so wildlife is covered. For landscapes had considered Canon wide angle lenses but not much experience with them. What would you recommend? Would 28mm be ok for merging panoramic shots? The 10-20mm used to cut out a lot of post processing work.
The full-frame equivalent of an APS-C 10-20mm lens would be 16-30mm, so something in that area would be the direct equivalent. The 28mm might be good for you for panoramas - try it out and see
Hi Christopher! I have a question for you. I have 2 choices to get Sigma lens for my Nikon aps-c to use in wedding, wide angle images: 1) only Sigma 20mm f1.4 Art lens or 2) Sigma 24mm f1.4 Art lens and plus Samyang 12mm f/2.8 lens. I want to get nice images with good background, contrast, at least central sharpening on wedding day or wide angle territory photos. Which one do you prefer to me? Thanks.
Hi Chris, did you purchase the USB dock from Sigma as well in order to fine-adjust the autofocus? There should be no AF misalignment anymore after the AF adjust procedure with this dock, I've read. Best, Ralf
Hello, thank you for this review. I want to buy sigma 24 mm 1.4 (it costs 770€ here) but now when I see this lens I can't dedcide. This lens costs 899€ and I don't know which one to buy. I'd love to hear your opinion which one is better value for money. Thanks, Martin.
Hi Christopher, Im struggling between 18-35mm F1.8 or this 20mm f1.4 on my Corp sensor Nikon, What is your suggestion? I do street photography most of the time, and landscape occasionally.
Very beautiful review! I always watch your review...Btw Chris, how do you manage to upload an exceptional crystal clear video? I am using adobe premier but getting a hard time to do it. Thanks
Thanks for your responsiveness. I already did that. I actually set the target bit rate to 32mbps. I just wonder if you check the "Use Maximum Render Quality".
Hey Chris, love your videos. I have learnt a lot! I just got a Sony A7M3 and Sony 24-105 f/4 G OSS. I can't yet decide on a Sigma or Samyang 20mm f/1.4 or 24mm f/14? Planning to use for astrophotography and night landscape shooting. What do you think? Looking forward to your advice.
@@christopherfrost Thanks for the advice. I think I will get the 20/1.4. At full frame, I shoot concerts, landscape and astro at 20mm and turn on APSC mode, I get to shoot 30mm for street photography and indoors. Sounds like a good idea! :)
Chris I mainly shoot portraits but at the same I've always wanted a good wide angle between this and the 50mm 1.4 sigma art what would you recommend as I can't afford both?
I'm not sure whether I should buy the Canon 18-135mm stm or the Canon 55-250mm stm. The 18-135 is a more appealing all-in-one range but the 55-250 reaches further. I'm also not sure if 55mm is a wide enough minimum focal length (especially on APS-C). The 18-135 is only just affordable for me whereas the other is definitely affordable. I use the Canon 700D and this purchase will be my first upgrade from my 18-55mm kit lens. What do you recommend?
55 mm is not only not wide enough on Aps-c sensor; it's not wide at all. That would be telephoto lens all the way. Go for 35 mm minimum, even though 55-250 STM is a cool inexpensive glass.
+Luke .V. I personally would buy a prime (24mm/35mm if you use an APS-C) with a fast aperture e.g. f1.4 and/or a 70-200mm f2.8 (or f4.0) IS - e.g. Tamron or Canon. But it always depends on your preferred way to take photos - so any suggestion can be completely wrong. I own the 18-135mm Canon, it is a nice lens, but IMHO it makes no sense to buy it, if you already own the 18-55mm Canon.
I have your same camera, and I am selling my 18-135. I don't really like it. Looking for a 17-50 sigma 2.8 for an upgrade. I also have a 55-250 IS, and a 50 1.8 II I would also like a Wideangle but I'm still working on the 17/50 at the moment.
Hi. Can you help in choosing 20mm or 24mm for me. Small 4mm gap is not an issue. My main purpose from this lens would be video making with good auto focus. Unable to decide between sigma 20mm and 24mm
what's the best and/or most valuable wide angle lens you would recommend for crop sensor (specifically canon) ? i was considering the tokina 11-16 f2.8 or the sigma 10-20mm
you are amazing reviewer chris, enjoyed ur videos so much,i have eos m6 with kit,i want portraits lens,or fast lens,is it ok to buy this Sigma 20mm f/1.4 with canon adptr or 22mm f2 is ok....
Hi Chris! Would you consider doing a review of the new Samyang 20mm 1.8 prime, I am ever so excited for this lens it has so many amazing qualities on paper (even simple things, it can fit filters, a lens for astro and landscape for canon users!?) would love to see how it stands up to some real world testing so I can go out and buy one already!!
I have a question about that new test chart ... I'm just wondering how do you take identical images of the same chart using different focal lengths ? I mean when you switched between the 135mm and 20mm the picture looked exactly the same, do you really just move away and closer to the picture ? if so.. how come we don't see any distortion ?
+Khaled Zidan I do indeed move forward and back. When it comes to distortion, different lenses have different levels of distortion. If you look at the shape of the test chart in the shots for the 20mm lens you can actually see the barrel distortion, especially in the resolution circles in the corners
which one should i choose for wedding photography this 20mm or the sigma 24mm art, which is more versatile? i want to combine it with sigma 35mm f1.4 art and 85mm..or should i choose nikon 16-35mm instead of 20mm or 24mm?
Hi Christopher. A big hello to you from a fellow former English teacher in South Korea! :) Your videos are extremely helpful so many thanks there. I'm looking to upgrade my canon 28mm f1.8 prime on my 600d. Out of the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 or Sigma 20mm f1.4, what would be your preference for a crop-sensor camera? I'm looking to upgrade primarily for video. Thank you in advance, Ruben
Oh Chris, I miss that wall! I've seeing that wall for years! RIP wall. 😊
+Toyin Oshodi I know, I'm sorry! It's two hours drive away from me now.
+Eli Corman Sorry...but tough!
You could look for another wall or house to take a picture off. Your original test scene gives a more real world test scenario. It's one thing that sets you apart form other lens reviewers :)
+EJ Tech Agreed.. I am sure there must me a new wall somewhere.. LOL
+Christopher Frost Photography
I'd say the new test is too effective xD. (Details shows up well).

Found the genesis of the beloved test chart! 🥳 3:46
Congrats on the move. Selling your 70D to save up for your wedding proves she must be a very special lady indeed!
+ChadMcC01 Hehe, yeah
Good review, and made extra lovely with the inclusion of Christmas stuff and that adorable fluffy bunny getting up to mischief. If this is your last review before the 24th, I'll just wish you a happy Christmas here and now!
"Hi, is me" :))
+peasant vasea wat r u tolkin about
I pre-ordered this lens before it reaches the store. I love it so much! It works very well with Lightroom 6.3 to remove distortion and vignetting. It's flaring resistance performance is also impressive. The only 2 things I dislike about it is the bulb front element and super heavy weight.

You can't go wrong with ART lenses. The 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm f/1.4, the 24-35mm f/2, and the 18-35mm f/1.8 are all superb.
the new table is so good
so happy to see you reviewed this lens.
Good to see a new video and a very interesting lens. I like the new test
YES!!! Your review, the only one that matters! Thank you, Chris!
you should add a review on Comma because many photographers want to use this lens for astrophotography
It's 20mm, the vids out there will show you the coma. For this focal length, I'm impressed by its clarity. The defects are mostly trivial to manage in post.
Just the review I wanted. You always read our minds Chris!
Hello Me, I'm dad
oh man I am totally as excited as you! sigma has blown ne away again with it's excellent quality optics, it's industry leading achievements and fast turnarounds! this has replaced my want for the 18-35!
This Sigma is a stellar performer!
Highly recommended!
Indeed
Thank you Chris as always. Your videos are informative and they are fun to watch.
Thanks for the great review Chris
I finally found the first video the chart was introduced xD
Hehe
The Cokin X filter with universal ring adaptor will work with this (probably). I`ve used it on the Tokina 16-28 and Canon 17mm tilt shift.
Damn i jumped out of my seat when i saw the notification of the new upload... ^_^
haha love how you start with .. " Hi, it's me.." :)
Still watching in 2019!
Absolutley stunning lens.. Another top quality video also... Love your channel...
Hey Chris, I don't know about the test chart. Although the new test chart is probably more accurate, it was part of your personal brand. I think the brick wall will be more familiar to most viewers. :)
And with "it" i mean the brick wall off course
+Jurrian :P I know, and I do agree in a way...but the wall is now two hours drive away unfortunately :-( I've tried to make the test chart a little more colourful and interesting than others!
Nice clear informative review as always thanks!
I'll be missing the wall for sure... but... the new chart is awesome as well...
When I want to know about a lense review, First I always go to this channel 👍
I like the new test chart
I had this lens in 2018-19 and it was one of the sharpest lenses I ever used on a DSLR. I would buy another but I have a Sony 20mm f1.8 G lens now which is tiny and amazing so no thanks. Great lens if you can find a good deal.
That af speed is really impressive for ART series!
Picked up this lens for my D750 earlier this month. Loving the perspective!
Love this lens. Thanks for the review!
I miss the wall. Can you do both? Great work Chris throughout the years - cheers!
Hope you can re review this again using the R7.. More power Chris
This video makes me think you could re-print your test chart haha
Greetings!

Me too - I would love a Sony FE version of this lens
Great lens, great review. Thank you!
Hello Christopher !
another good wide angle lens (for apsc and full frame) where we can not screw filters i'm very disappointed !
Good review, I think the house was a better "real life" test, but Good review anyway, I hope someday can have a copy of this lens....
I just can't believe that no other company didn't build that kind of lens.
A very useful review as usual. However, I prefer your old brick wall. God bless! :)
Another great review indeed :)
I'd like to see an old test area like your old videos because a chart up close isn't representative of real world conditions. A lot of lenses up close show field curvature. I'd rather see a shot at infinity because that's how most people use landscaping lenses.

+Christopher Frost Photography, thanks for the reply. Keep the reviews coming. And again, thank you for what you do.
Rip the house and the 70D :'(
I love your bunny thought, take more pictures of him/her on your reviews :D
Can't wait to try this one! Looks fun. Have you ever tested sigma's 85 1.4?
+acedenach Nah, I haven't actually! Maybe one day. I hear it doesn't have very accurate autofocus, and that tends to drive me a little nuts.
Hey Chris, thanks for your great work =) so how i see it the 20mm 1.4 and the 35mm 1.4 are both great lenses...
since i'm using APS-C which of the both would you recommend to get (first)? Thanks and God Bless!
I see this comment is very, very old lol but I'm going to go ahead and answer this since he didn't. Go with the 35mm!
Chris will the nisi fleet system work on this lens. Thanks tom
I just bought this lens for astro work, should be a real treat!! :) Just hope coma won't be that bad at full aperture...
Just did the same :).
Good choice! :)
I miss that wall too!
Hi Chris, I did it and purchased one copy! God bless you! Ralf
Great! Have fun :-)
Thank you! Just processed the fist pictures. On my Canon 6D excellent image quality indeed :-)

Very informative. Is the view of the port at the end of the Video somewhere in Wales or Cornwall?
+RCPHOTOMAN It's a small seaside village called Llangrannog, on the west coast of Wales :-)
hi christopher, i wonder about the samyang 20mm. is this still a new lens? since u could not make a review of, would like to know ur opinion! keep up the great work. kind regards

Hi. Can you re do sharpness test on R5 ?
The wall is gone and we are bloody mad about it. Pray on it but there are more structures that will show CA besides just windows, especially when you are pixel peeping.
+Richard Raymond The test chart is considerably better if you're really up for pixel peeping...
hey there, I'm just wondering have you done any coma test for this lens?

Nice and interesting review! How do you evaluate AF accuracy of the lens? I've had always problems with AF of Sigma lenses on my Canon cameras...
As I mentioned in the video, my copy of the lens slightly missed from time to time but generally it was good
Hi Christopher! I have a question for you. I have 2 choices to get Sigma lens for my Nikon aps-c to use in wedding, wide angle images:
1) only Sigma 20mm f1.4 Art lens or
2) Sigma 24mm f1.4 Art lens and plus Samyang 12mm f/2.8 lens.
I want to get nice images with good background, contrast, at least central sharpening on wedding day or wide angle territory photos.
Which one do you prefer to me?
Thanks.
I'd personally go for the 20mm, no doubt
im a newbie photographer, so far ive used a stabilized lens. how noticable is the lack of stabilization in a lens? how will it affect the shooting?
excellent review! btw when will people need 20mm lens?
+DarkPa1adin All kinds of uses really - creative photography, wedding photos, astrophotography
Hey, that photo was Cardigan in Wales... not far from me! - Would you recommend this lens for wide establishing shots for video?
Sure, especially on a full-frame camera
Hi Chris, did you purchase the USB dock from Sigma as well in order to fine-adjust the autofocus? There should be no AF misalignment anymore after the AF adjust procedure with this dock, I've read. Best, Ralf
The issue was not alignment - it was inconsistency
You mean the standard deviation of the exact autofocus position is rather high?
Hello, thank you for this review. I want to buy sigma 24 mm 1.4 (it costs 770€ here) but now when I see this lens I can't dedcide. This lens costs 899€ and I don't know which one to buy. I'd love to hear your opinion which one is better value for money. Thanks, Martin.
Hi Christopher, Im struggling between 18-35mm F1.8 or this 20mm f1.4 on my Corp sensor Nikon, What is your suggestion? I do street photography most of the time, and landscape occasionally.
It depends on you really, but personally I'd go for the 18-35 for extra versatility
Very beautiful review! I always watch your review...Btw Chris, how do you manage to upload an exceptional crystal clear video? I am using adobe premier but getting a hard time to do it. Thanks
Thanks! I upload in 1080p, at a bitrate of 20mps
Thanks for your responsiveness. I already did that. I actually set the target bit rate to 32mbps. I just wonder if you check the "Use Maximum Render Quality".
+alfz08 You probably want to do that
Thank Chris! You are so helpful!
I prefer the 20mm lens
@@christopherfrost Thanks for the advice. I think I will get the 20/1.4. At full frame, I shoot concerts, landscape and astro at 20mm and turn on APSC mode, I get to shoot 30mm for street photography and indoors. Sounds like a good idea! :)
Hey Chris, I'm between getting this 20mm from sigma or their 24-35 f/2...would you be able to do a review on that lens as well?
+Jordan Davis A review of the 24-35 is coming in a few weeks. It's very nice indeed but big and very heavy...personally I'd go for the 20mm 1.4
Chris I mainly shoot portraits but at the same I've always wanted a good wide angle between this and the 50mm 1.4 sigma art what would you recommend as I can't afford both?
Maybe just go half way - get a 35mm f/1.4 lens :-)
+Dani Timo Thanks for the advice
I also have a 55-250 IS, and a 50 1.8 II
I would also like a Wideangle but I'm still working on the 17/50 at the moment.
Hi. Can you help in choosing 20mm or 24mm for me. Small 4mm gap is not an issue. My main purpose from this lens would be video making with good auto focus. Unable to decide between sigma 20mm and 24mm
I'd personally get the 20mm lens, it's a little sharper
what's the best and/or most valuable wide angle lens you would recommend for crop sensor (specifically canon) ? i was considering the tokina 11-16 f2.8 or the sigma 10-20mm
+Tarif Anzum Take a look at my ultra wide angle lens comparison video - it'll tell you everything you need to know :-)
you are amazing reviewer chris, enjoyed ur videos so much,i have eos m6 with kit,i want portraits lens,or fast lens,is it ok to buy this Sigma 20mm f/1.4 with canon adptr or 22mm f2 is ok....
It would be okay but the 22mm lens would be way less expensive and much smaller!
Hey Chris, would you recommend this or the 35mm ART for all-round filming?
If you have a good image stabilization system (a gimbal) or a good tripod then yes
Hopefully I can get hold of one soon for a review
Thanks for the reply, I hope you can get your hands on one too!
Hai Christopher how does this sigma 20mm Art perform vs my tamron 15-30mm on 20mm on sharpness and collor
At f/2.8 the Sigma lens is a LOT sharper
which one should i choose for wedding photography this 20mm or the sigma 24mm art, which is more versatile? i want to combine it with sigma 35mm f1.4 art and 85mm..or should i choose nikon 16-35mm instead of 20mm or 24mm?
Personally I'd probably get the 24mm
Christopher Frost Photography do you think this 24mm sigma better than nikon 24mm f1.8G?
No idea, I don't test Nikon lenses
Hi Christopher. A big hello to you from a fellow former English teacher in South Korea! :) Your videos are extremely helpful so many thanks there. I'm looking to upgrade my canon 28mm f1.8 prime on my 600d. Out of the Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 or Sigma 20mm f1.4, what would be your preference for a crop-sensor camera? I'm looking to upgrade primarily for video. Thank you in advance, Ruben
If it's for video, just get the 18-35 for its flexibility. It's great. All the best!
Thank you Christopher!
