Christopher, the edge issues that you are experiencing on the Sony is due to the differences in the sensor stack thickness between the different cameras. The thickness of the glass in front of the sensor is optically significant, and lenses designed for a particular mount are designed such that they give optimal performance with a particular range of thicknesses. Once you stray outside that range, you can see sub-optimal behaviors, especially in wide lenses and in fast lenses (and doubly so in wide, fast lenses). This can range from under/overcorrection of spherical aberration, astigmatism, comatic aberration, or as it seems in the case of the Sigma 14mm, field curvature.
This is a plausible explanation. Another explanation could be the design of micro lenses on the sensor glass, which are designed to divert angled light from the lens down into each pixel of the sensor. Since Sony has a shorter flange distance than Canon and Nikon, the micro lenses are designed to divert different angles than the ones that are coming from a lens designed for a longer flange distance.

I do love the Sigma Art Lenses. My 35mm f1.4 gets used a lot. My only experience with 14mm lenses was the Canon EF 14mm f2.8 II. I was so disappointed with the image quality that I sent it back. The lens was very unsharp at the corners and had severe chromatic aberration on the left hand side of the image. It went back to Canon for testing and they said it was normal performance for that model! This Sigma looks a lot better. The lack of filter fittings would be a deal breaker though. Whilst I do not use filters a lot, I do use NDs & grads on wide angle landscapes. I am surprised there is no rear filter holder. The Sigma 15mm f2.8 Fisheye had a rear filter slot. After I got rid of my Canon 14mm I bought one of the first Irix 15mm f2.4 Blackstone lenses when they first came on the market. This lens is not auto focus but is extremely sharp right across the frame and takes both front & rear filters although the 92mm front thread means filter prices can be eye-watering. Keep up the good work!
This lens is primarily for Astrophotography and here it really shines. I use it for taking pictures of the Aurora Borealis in Northern Europe. If you are into Landscape, you wont use 1.8 but more 5.6 or 8.0. So no need for this lens of you are into Landscape only. In my opinion.
I know I’m late, but thanks for your input. I’ve been looking to purchase an ultra-wide exclusively for Astro, and this lens seems like the top contender.
Yup, there are a lot of theories I have heard in regards to them not producing gear. Although now that Sony has support, it's got to be a matter of time before Fuji gets some love.
Thank you Christopher for the new review. I may have to do the "weekend hire" for this lens too. Hope you and the Mrs had a very Happy Easter. He has risen !
Been waiting for this lens review Chris!! May sound crazy, but I've held off purchasing this lens until you've reviewed it. Can you look into reviewing the sigma 14-24 f2.8 art next?
I have been waiting for this review! Awesome job, I just wish the shooting conditions were better for your astrophotography test haha! Looking to rent this lens before I think about dropping the $1,500

The adapter may effect the corner issue. Also there is a solution posted elsewhere involving checking corner focus in live view.
The infinity focus could be corrected using the sigma lens dock. As a rental lens, maybe somebody changed the settings for its own camera or purpose, and never set the defaults back? Nice review. Keep it up.
Jeff Fenske Sigma makes an USB dock that you connect to your pc, and, using sigma's software you can update the lens firmware, and also change the relative focus points (i. e. make the focus motor move to other position at X point in the focus scale) ruclips.net/video/dpkDJhiid8c/видео.html
Have heard of somewhat similar issues when adapting wide lenses to Sony FE mount in general - no idea why this happens but this isn't an isolated incident
I recently used this lens and focusing with great ambient light it had major issues. I have the 1.4 in route and I hope they’ve fixed some of those problems.
Hey Chris! Next time please review the tamron 24-70 f2.8 G2 please. Im considering to buy a copy. If you have the time, it would be fantastic. Thank you!
Excellent review as always. I can't wait to see what gurus of astrophotography have to show us and how they can capture milky way with this. Yet at this price, despite all the merits, I don't have this lens in my wish list as first of all, my Samyang / Rokinon 14mm 2.8 is more that what I can dream about (I have three copies of this lens). Then, and if I was in market for wide / ultra wide, fast lens, my first choice probably would be this but at 1/4 the price, with only 10 percent or less, lose in quality, my choice would be Venus optical Laowa 15mm F/4 and not F/2 that you mentioned at 10:46 minute. Anyways excellent job and thanks for your great work in this review. You are a priceless source of truly unbiased information with right projection of scientific data (That really matters to user), at best. A very unique and rarity on RUclips.
Thank about your reviews. Much appreciated. About the curvature of field on Sony camera: While super wide angle lenses have huge depth of field on the subject side, the image plane on the sensor size is actually razor thin. Also if the lens is not a telecentric design, like it seems to be the case here, then rays arrive with an angle of incidence at corners. The optical path will then vary as a function of angle of incidence and glass thickness (stack) in front of sensor hence curving the image plane field. See for Brian Caldwell and Roger Cicala articles. I would suggest to test the lens on a Canon 5DS R which is probably closer to the intended design of the lens.
Well that was the simplest explanation I could figure out. Just kidding. Anyway, what that means is that when you "adapt" a lens on a Sony A7x camera - especially if it is a super-wide and even more so if it has a large aperture - you may get field curvature blurring the corners. The adapted lens and the camera stack are one unique optical system. To mitigate the problem, there is a company that sells 'thin' stack modification for Sony cameras. Just google 'kolari mod'. But it seems expensive and no warranty that it works perfectly for this case.
Holy Balls. Might have to bump some on your sharpness list. I'm not sure why someone would buy this for aps-c, it costs so much when you could buy a FF and a 24mm F/1.4 for less.
I've been trying (and failing) to find an explanation for the focusing anomaly you experienced with the A7RII, putting it down to field curvature - exaggerated by the very short distance from sensor to test chart with such an ultra-wide-angle lens - and to the higher resolving power of the 42MP sensor or perhaps to some slight inaccuracy in the adapter's construction. Out of interest, were you using a Metabones, an MC-11, Commlite or another adapter? I'm sure you were only focusing manually, with OSS switched off... By the way, if you plan to test more Sigma lenses then it might be worth investing in a £39 Sigma Dock. I was hoping that Roger Cicala's review (www.lensrentals.com/blog/2017/07/sharpness-tests-of-the-sigma-14mm-f1-8-dg-hsm-art/) might throw some light on this but he only briefly mentions field curvature. You may be also interested to know that Lens Rentals (in the USA) appears to be offering the Sony E mount version for hire soon - in a couple of day's time if you take their hire page literally! www.lensrentals.com/rent/sigma-14mm-f1.8-dg-hsm-art-for-sony-e
If the blurry corners were due to an adapter, it would seem like not all 4 corners would be off in the way. I think that's why he stressed "all four" because if the lens was tilted at an angle the blurring wouldn't be evenly in all four corners. I wish he would've tested if the corners were also blurry at longer distances. It kinda seemed like he found a happy medium where the center and the corners were decently sharp... This video has had me trying to research field curvature for a couple hours and I'm just getting a mixed bag of results. If you know of any good articles beyond what you already listed, let us know!
When a lens gas floating elements the adapter can produce extremely big field curvature if the tolerances in flange distance are not the same as a normal canon EF mount

Hi Christopher! Thank you for your reviews, I´ve been watching some of them on my quest for a good wide lens for Canon EF mount (I have a 6D). In general, what would you spend your money on? 1) Sigma Art 14mm f/1.8; 2) Sigma Art 14-24 f/2.8 or; 3) Sigma Art 12-24 f/4? Or any other option?
I have 2 ART lenses (50 and 85) and my bag and back are suffering already. I wish they made them a bit lighter. I want to buy this one too but I dont know if I can bare the added weight.... :(
Chris have you though of checking out the Rokinon 20mm 1.8? I'd love to know how it relates to the Sigma 20mm seeing as there isn't much information about it online? Love all the videos
Can u post a video about how you calibrate the auto focus ? I've been facing major misfocuse issues with my sigma 17-50 f2.8 on Nikon d7200. And I used to think that the sharpness was the problem, It turned out it s not ! The focus was the major issue.
What's the "George Peterson" reference? By the way, adapter reduces wide angle lens sharpness. My Sigma 20mm f/1.4 corners also look terrible if I focus on the center point. I often have to put it on a tripod to perform focus stacking..... so much for the IBIS feature that I can't take advantage of.

Focus issues, eh? I bought a 18-35 f1.8 and had similar issues. Then I found out that in order to calibrate this lens yourself, you had to shell out an additional $100 to get their dock. I swore off Sigma at that point.
That's always been a problem with Sigma lenses that have canon mount. I have the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art, and the focusing is terrible too without the Focus Microadjustment. Some people said that Sigma haven't got the correct formula for Canon focusing
Kevan B , I honestly love my 18-35 after 2 days microadjusting my camera focus for that specific lens. It is sharp as hell. Maybe you should try adjusting it too?
No focus fine tuning option for my D5300. And I'm not shelling out extra money to be able to fix something that shouldn't have been present in a brand new lens made specifically for DX cameras.
Dhanes Soegondo hi , im using live view for my sigma 18-35, it it better when compared to using viewfinder, do i still need to do the callibration or there ll be no different in live view mode?

Thanks. I watched your reviews again and I decided to get Rokinon 16mm because of its sharpness and low price. I just got it yesterday. your reviews are always the best
Adaptors always cause issues especially from one make to another. Many of your videos where you adapted to your apsc canon many had issues with the adaptor which you wouldn't have seen on a apsc without an adaptor.
Kudos for Jordan Peterson! Wide angles lenses have problem with thus. What adapter are you using? I checked on yt and most adapters do it pretty bad but from Metabines IV smart adapters (which I owe) have some velur insides that helps fight problems with edges sharpness at wide angles.
Hi All, I am going to buy this lens but wander I should buy the NEW SONY FE Version or the Canon Version ( I Have MC-11), since I see many reviews have the corner issues in Sony Cameras, is that anyone try the new FE version yet? I mainly use this lens for Astro purpose, thanks in advance!
now that Sony has a 14mm f1.8 (and Sigma has a 14mm f1.4), a comparison is in order. I can live with vingetting as long as it is even and symetrical. I can only accept so much coma.
Wazer Benal if it gives you all features of a naive lens then I consider it native. Sure would be nice to have them specifically made to Sony but they claim its better than adapting that lens... We shall see
Every time you use a converter or adapter you are introducing a chance of an error that was not originally taken in to account by the manufacture because the product was simply not intended for this use. Later trowing the product and manufacture under the buss buy testing it with adapters on camera that was intended for really shows nothing about the product it only shows that the user is ignoring the manufacture instruction and then is complaining about the final result. It is like buying shoes 2 size bigger filling them up with different insoles to compensate for the size differences and then complaining that the shoes are really not comfortable .
It is really weird. I have seen the same problems with Canons 16-35 mm lenses. Somehow the corners get blurry although the adapter does not contain any glass. I think the effect is way to strong and it can't be a lens problem. This also would have rendered this lenses useless on a 50 megapixel 5Ds. It was one of the reasons for me picking up Fuji cameras rather than Sony since I do not have to think about adapter problems.

About the curvature of field on Sony camera:
While super wide angle lenses have huge depth of field on the subject side, the image plane on the sensor size is actually razor thin. Also if the lens is not a telecentric design, like it seems to be the case here, then rays arrive with an angle of incidence at corners. Anyway, what that means is that when you "adapt" a lens on a Sony A7x camera - especially if it is a super-wide and even more so if it has a large aperture - you may get field curvature blurring the corners. The adapted lens and the camera stack are one unique optical system.

I assume that this lens when using an EOS R camera with an EF lens adapter will have serious problems too ...
Sorry new to photography maybe a dumb question but is this compatible with the canon mirrorless? Looking to get into photography and I have a canon eos r.
Yes, if you buy an adaptor.
Lovely review as always. Is this sharper still, than their 20mm f/1.4 (?) Art..?
Not sure, really - perhaps the 20mm lens is slightly sharper
Thanks Christopher.
14mm AF lens for Canon EF mount, but budget options.
I have a 90D and do landscape. Which one of the following 3 lenses you think is better for the price.
* Yongnuo YN 14mm f/2.8 Lens for Canon EF, $552

This looks like such a cool lens! Do you think it will work with the Canon R6 Mark2?
Did u ever get an answer to this?
@@ReelyboredJon No, and I ended up getting the RF 15-35mm
Focus issues, eh? I bought a 18-35 f1.8 and had similar issues. Then I found out that in order to calibrate this lens yourself, you had to shell out an additional $100 to get their dock. I swore off Sigma at that point.
Hi CHristopher, I was wondering if you were going to get the a7 III since it can shoot in both apsc and FF so one camera for 2 set of lens test?
So can my a7R II. And also, the a7R II would be far better, as its APS-C mode is 18 megapixels
That's always been a problem with Sigma lenses that have canon mount. I have the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 DC HSM Art, and the focusing is terrible too without the Focus Microadjustment. Some people said that Sigma haven't got the correct formula for Canon focusing
Had the same problem on my 18-35 for Nikon. I just don't trust Sigma anymore.
Kevan B damn that's so unfortunate. By I agree with your point here
OK Chris, I am an little tired of being looking an all around lenses for my 650d.so at the end can y suggest me some all around and zoom good lenses from Canon or sigma. (I was looking the sigma 70-200 f2. 8 and also sigma 24-105 f4). My gear at the moment:sigma 100 macro, Canon 50mm f1. 8,and kit lens 18-55 f3. 5-5.6.thanks in advace
Loads of options. You should consider selling the 18-55mm lens and getting a Canon 15-85mm, that could be a good option
Did the 14mm have problems when the A7R II was in crop mode?
Didn't try it in crop mode
Hello Christopher. Verry good reviews on all the lenses that you done.
I was wondering if you can make a review of the discontinued Sigma 50-150 f2.8 APO EX DC OS HSM.
I want to buy this lens but im not 100% sure of it, and I can`t find a good review on it. Thanks and have a good day. Cheers.
It's hard to find them really, so I don't have any plans to
I liked the video after hearing the Jordan Peterson reference lol. love it!
What did you use to calibrate it?
thank you Chris. I have Nikon D3400 and I want to get a sharp and wide angle lens. my budget is $500 max. the only good value for money lens I found was Samyang 14mm f/2.8. Do you have any other suggestions to get a sharp wide angle lens? I am willing to take landscape and street photos.
Best
Take a look at my video about wide angle lenses for APS-C cameras, and bear in mind that Canon lenses don't work on Nikon
Thanks. I watched your reviews again and I decided to get Rokinon 16mm because of its sharpness and low price. I just got it yesterday.
your reviews are always the best
Can this be used on a Canon EOS R5 camera using an EF to RF adapter?
i dont see why not
A Jordan Peterson fan I see.
What adapter do u use on eos m
Hi! Great Video! Can you please do a comparison between sigma 14mm 1:8 vs rokinon 14 mm 2:8? Thanks in advance.
Take a look at my review of that Rokinon (Samyang) lens to see how well it performs
Adaptors always cause issues especially from one make to another. Many of your videos where you adapted to your apsc canon many had issues with the adaptor which you wouldn't have seen on a apsc without an adaptor.
Waiting art lenses for dx cameras.
which one do you like better? this one or the Samyang 14mm 2.8?
You mean the new autofocus one? I'd probably prefer the Sigma but it's not exactly a fair test as the Sigma lens costs about 2.5 times more money
Thank you Chris :)
Why do mirrorless adapters require more than air for lenses to work properly?
I see. I thought "smart adapters" meant something else was going on besides just an anti-reflective coating.
I don't own one but the main reason is mb iv has a greater inner diameter.
What about compared to Laowa 12mm? (for Real Estate)
For a FF camera
I'd prefer the Laowa lens for its low distortion
Images look very distorted...I too would use on a A7rII or a Canon FF
Wow never been this early to a vid
for the price point, i think the Laowa 12mm f/2.8 distortion free lens is superior.
How do you calibrate focus?
Look in your camera's instruction manual, if it has that feature, or purchase the Sigma USB dock
OH GOD MY DREAM LENS
Hi All, I am going to buy this lens but wander I should buy the NEW SONY FE Version or the Canon Version ( I Have MC-11), since I see many reviews have the corner issues in Sony Cameras, is that anyone try the new FE version yet?
I mainly use this lens for Astro purpose, thanks in advance!
Personally I'd get the new FE version, just to be sure
Christopher Frost Photography May I know the reason?😂
Where can you borrow lenses from?
A few different companies based in the UK
I have sony a6400
I make video on tripod only
Low light video
What is good for this camera
Sigma 14mm 1.8 /sigma 16mm 1.4
Sigma needs to fix their calibration issues, this happens all the time with users.
now that Sony has a 14mm f1.8 (and Sigma has a 14mm f1.4), a comparison is in order.
I can live with vingetting as long as it is even and symetrical. I can only accept so much coma.
Sharper than Jordan Peterson?
Instant purchase!
Hehe
The Sony version has built-in adaptor? So it's not a native Sony lens? I thought those lenses were gonna be native :(
Wazer Benal if it gives you all features of a naive lens then I consider it native. Sure would be nice to have them specifically made to Sony but they claim its better than adapting that lens... We shall see
Wazer Benal it's a native lenses for sony, check out the interview of the CEO from sigma
Good to hear. Thanks! :)
Get the new Samyang 20mm f/1.8 Chris :3
Sigma is the best, others are far behind.
It was one of the reasons for me picking up Fuji cameras rather than Sony since I do not have to think about adapter problems.
hahahahaha "sharper than JP"! I just bought the 12 rules the other day :)
"sharper than Jordan Peterson" that's great! :-)
The problems with the Sony, are related with the very short flange focal distance.
