The band is very poetic. It's just about a bad relationship where the guy knows he is emotionally killing the girl and wants her to stay "hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks" and willing to do anything if even it means hurting her to stay.
The lyrics are completely insane but strangely addicting. The mean is crazy and obviously debatable but this song is from the complete other view of the topic.
Honestly for a live performance, this is phenomenal.... most bands cannot reproduce their track sounds live, however these guys do it really well. (it also helps that they can sing!)
i heard this song at 4 am on my radio and i scrambled to write down some lyrics to google it and find out what song this was and it took me a while to get a single word i could understand hahahah
It's like in the US. Either you're a good athlete, know a lot about cars--puting them together or a good musician. I think the brits have a cultural affinity toward music. And, they're not messing around in that endeavour. As it shows.
just for those wondering, the song is about an abusive relationship. I felt the same way when i first heard it though, it has an endearing sound to it, which i feel like is sort of commentary on how abusive relationships work.
Small distances make big difference with microphones, so most people prefer to put the mouth to the mic so they have a reliable idea on how far they are from it, and can accurately play with sound/distance :)
Don't know if you know Yuck or not but you can't tell the difference between their live and studio stuff. I agree with you on this though, unbelievable
The sound is similar, but Alt-J are clearly drawing on a much wider range of influences as opposed to Bombay Bicycle Club. If you listen to the album, there's so much to take in that it's just overwhelming. Not that I dislike BBC, I love both of them. For me though, this is the best band to come out in a while, definitely album of the year.
The funny thing about it is if you listen after those notes are played, it almost sounds like he does it again as if he intended to be part of the song.
although I usually dont know what this guy is singing about his voice is basically one of the wonders of the universe.
Ok, so I'm not the only one...
The band is very poetic. It's just about a bad relationship where the guy knows he is emotionally killing the girl and wants her to stay "hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks" and willing to do anything if even it means hurting her to stay.
Rebecca Torres what is a breezeblock?
kentucky nightmare A breezeblock is a concrete block, it's the block that you see the man use to hit the woman in the music video.
GeneralNonsenze Exactly
2 guys singing 'i love you so i love you so' together repeatedly- is so cute!!!!!
Shengying Xu Until you realize they're also saying "I'll eat you whole."
They're literally talking about how he's basically willing to kill the girl to make her stay in the relationship
The canon, ah yes...
No Hi Hat, No Ride, Splash or Crash cymbals......a very unique drummer!! Love these guys and I am almost a senior citizen, in age only!!!
A very unique group to say the least!
Dale Sharpy yeah just like Darude-Sandstorm
Yes, he is really good with percussion sounds, Thom Sonny Green Is my favourite drummer
Drumming on point
I know 😍
He's amazing, truly.
Some people can't understand him but I can hear everything he's saying perfectly
Even if they cannot understand him, it's an amazing sound. Its own instrument. I usually listen to the lyrics as so.
I cannot believe their sound for being live, very impressed.
Im just amazed with the work of the guy in the background voice !
his voice is a m a z i n g
I literally cannot believe how perfect this sounds live. Its the best I've ever heard.
The lyrics are completely insane but strangely addicting. The mean is crazy and obviously debatable but this song is from the complete other view of the topic.

Came back for this 11 years after first seeing it & still marvel at how clean they sound!
Their live performance is waaaaaaay too good to be... Live. I can't get enough of them.
the guy wearing the green hoodie with the keyboards is adorable!!
That would be Gus. And omg he is such a sweetheart!
Ik he reminds me of Remus Lupin so much 😍
I can't believe how great this sounds and how it is like exactly like the recording.
I HAD TO FIND OUT WHAT THEY LOOKED LIKE OMG
As good live as they are recorded and that is no easy task
If not better
This song is like an amazing trap. You hear it once and then you have to keep listening to it "just one more time"
Agh! I've been listening to their whole album on repeat for about 2 weeks now and I still love them so! :P
Honestly for a live performance, this is phenomenal.... most bands cannot reproduce their track sounds live, however these guys do it really well. (it also helps that they can sing!)

So fresh.
No explanation needed. My friends and I feel the same!!!
i love alt-j but seriously why can't they have as much emotion as they do in the studio recordings
really?!
really what... Cara Needham
Kennedy Cox ikr, it's kinda frustrating
Kennedy Cox because u need to separate studio from the live sessions. And u REALLY have to do this on open space shows.
It's still a mistery to me how the british always manage to come out with the best music.
Wdym it's a mystery, British are the bessttt
It's like in the US. Either you're a good athlete, know a lot about cars--puting them together or a good musician. I think the brits have a cultural affinity toward music. And, they're not messing around in that endeavour. As it shows.

It's because it's for radio. If you'd like to see them 'perform' then look for a video with them playing to a crowd :)
This band rocks the shit out of me!

Anyone else digging the drummer....he's got some sweet chops working here. great technique
this band is the balls!
just for those wondering, the song is about an abusive relationship. I felt the same way when i first heard it though, it has an endearing sound to it, which i feel like is sort of commentary on how abusive relationships work.
Maravilloso
Its so emotive. It kinda reminds me of Jeff Buckley in places.I love the harmonizing at the end.
Yes.

I can ear this song all fucking day.. Pop up. Sickk

Small distances make big difference with microphones, so most people prefer to put the mouth to the mic so they have a reliable idea on how far they are from it, and can accurately play with sound/distance :)
omg serious man crush right now. serious love for these men right now. i can't even describe.
Great version. Love the screw up at 2:32 and the sheepish look at 2:36.
idk why i assumed this band would be bad live but its a pleasant surprise that they're amazing
yeah i thought the same after seen it a few times, quiet and sober personality versus amazing songs and interpretation.
many notes are hit in this song
One of those songs you need to look up the lyics to fully enjoy it!
I thought there was no way they could sound good live. Very glad to be proven wrong.
Eargasm!
dat voice.
Enorme !! ;)
One emoticon explains this song this I listen to it:
Fuck they sound reallllyyyyy good live!
best band in the fuckin world, and you know it!!!!!
Don't know if you know Yuck or not but you can't tell the difference between their live and studio stuff. I agree with you on this though, unbelievable

Love seeing my sister's boyfriend up there, feeling proud :)
Love the base players 90's bowl cut.

Oh man, you guys. I actually found this band out from MTV.

Haha I like the way he failed on the high part around 3:30 but it still rocked.
The freekin drummer!!
Totally fucks up at 2:32. But it's still awesome.
I love that background guitar riff that's like higher and it starts at like the slower part of the song, anyone else know what im talking about? Lolz
2:14 onwards is just great
At the very end of the song press the Alt and J key 23 times. Enjoy.
I can explain it..LISTEN TO THE DAMN VOICE!!
Ok, you do have an apple, congrats!
Same as a cinder block. Has the two hollow squares in it.
Press ALT+J at the end of the song
Sick recovery at 2:31
2:32 is it just me or was there a little slip up?
You are right. Look his face expression few seconds later.. :D
Sergio D. Neri Regardless, an awesome performance. I find their slip ups endearing lol.
Definitely great performance ;)
The funny thing about it is if you listen after those notes are played, it almost sounds like he does it again as if he intended to be part of the song.
