For years I would tell people that Son Volt is alternative country. They always asked, "What is that like?" I would play them "Drown" and they would say, "I get it! This is awesome!" This live version is even better than the recorded one on the album, as you can hear the other singing harmonies much more prominently and it really adds to it.
This song was in heavy rotation on the radio back in the day. I’ve been a fan of Son Volt ever since. My husband and I have have been to many shows over the years. We got to meet Jay, He was very nice and talked to us like he wasn’t in a rush. Sweet Man ❤
There is a guy named Neil Young that got that going. In Son Volt''s case it is a Gibson gold top Les Paul with a Marshall amp. (In a country sort of way.)
A song that i like to play over and over again as i smile & remember my college days in missouri 1995-1996. Good times. The weather, people, food, smell, fashion (which never left me totally). Kinda emotional actually esp w this beautiful song at the background
My all-time favorite hit the ground running song... change the course of my life why don't you... what seemed lost to posterity now found again... good God how I wondered about this song... I. WAS. JUST. A. KID. Some things bear repeating I'm so thankful for this band... Long morning bus rides... That handful of really great songs on the radio coming in real clear as everybody Shuffles out and I get to smile and Bop just a little bit on my way down the steps onto the concrete as I look up and walk away from that gurgling cloud of exhaust while the sun peeks up pretty-much blinding everybody... Therefore I step into the blur my life has become... I embrace it. ❤
Found SonVolt in ‘96 randomly playing this song on a ‘hot hits’ sampler on my HS radio station. Worked backwards to Wilco and UT. Didn’t take more than one play to be hooked
So, Jay Farrar used to play in the band Uncle Tupelo with Jeff Tweedy...who is the lead of Wilco. Check out Jay's older stuff and you'll get a very good understanding how he ended up where he is musically. He's very good. Still yours. He's in CT soon.
My favorite Son Volt song, but in my opinion I always felt that this song has such a great riff that they should repeat it a second time before they break into the change where he sings, "You're with me now...." Anyone agree?
Jay did his solo bit. They did a song for the Escovedo tribute/fundraiser. Allegedly Jay wanted to do more but they couldn't come to terms. And I've been looking for them but can't find them.
Wtf with people getting all critical and uberknowledgeable with rock n roll. I’m sure The brothers are great just like the Stinson bros were really The Replacements not Westerberg. I can’t take it anymore. Head vein a poppin! Can you write S like this or you just write S like this. SHEESH!!!
G Hines, saw them play last night in MN and the current line-up sounded good. You can't go back in time searching for perfect, so why don't you shut the fuck up and enjoy what's going on right now?
I heard this song once in the 90s and never forgot the chorus: "what goes wrong, you're causing it". That line is unforgettably great 😂🤣
Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt, Wilco, the sound track of my life.
Same here, except replace Wilco with Dinosaur Jr.
Yep @@absolutelynonameslef

100% - spot on
agree, if only new countrty bs could be this good@@scottferguson2278
Trace is a solid album even if the listener is not into "alt country" especially.
Cow bell too 👌
Rock & Roll baby

This gets better every time you listen to it.
Yes Copy
this is how guitars and amplifiers should sound
Loud as fuck
Exactly.
Jesus you hit it

Hey, I went to Mizzou in the mid 90s. Great memories.
A masterpiece of songwriting.
What an amazing album. Remember listen ing to this constantly driving through Texas.
Hell yeah I remember this!! I was rough skunked in rehab Memphis, got out to THIS🤩👍
Fabulous Son Volt lineup here. So tight, just spot on. Really working it but looking so effortless. Inspired. Inspirational.
Totally agree
Goddam I haven't heard this in over a decade........forgot how much I loved this band and how much buoyancy they gave me. ❤❤❤❤❤

One of my favorite bands.

Just saw them last Sunday. Still great. Farrar is the man.
The best stage presence of any band, i.e. none. Let the song speak for itself.
redshaftedflicker Dam right! Leave Dancing with the Stars for the cheerleaders
I've needed to listen to this song every day for more than a week... so fucking good...
yeah it's heavy in multiple ways :D
his voice is an instrument.
That man has a beautiful voice.

@@williamtimmons1812 Thank you for the tip, friend. :-)
simply a great album!
The perfect application of cowbell.
I got a fever for more cowbell
That outro could go on for another couple minutes. Great song.
My friend Dave got me hooked on the Band !!!
Awesome tune. One of my favorites. Thanks for posting. Fixing to crank up the super reverb!!
This song kick serious ass !!!!!
it' out-heavies a lot of other bands :D
Always always always Dave Boquist. A musical god, nothing he can't play.
I listen to this song about once a day sometimes more.
Freakin love this song!!!!!
Yeah !!!!! Takes me back to Minnesota dirt roads hauling away for a flight!!!
.... and here it is!! Love it!
I dig Jay's amp setup... AC 30 and dual rec Maverick. I have the same cream Mesa on the right.
Team Jay all the way
sure sounds like he is saying "you're cousin it" which is fine cuz I love the adams family and also a cool song too
Isn't he singing 'you're causin' it'?
LMAO
Oh god you’ve ruined it for me. I’ll only ever hear Cousin It from now in.
Your causing zits he said lol
OMG bestiality rears it's hairy head(?)
Used to jam to this in high school
Love those guys.
These guys are SOOOO GOOOOD....
Bejesus this rocks like an earthquak
Y'Alternative!

this song is whacha call saturated in soul :)
Awesome
THANKFUL ...
Bun E. Carlos sent me.
Viva la Bun!
And in the end, all things merge into one ... and Son Volt runs through it. (no disrespect to the great Norman Maclean)
Just good music nothing else to say!!
I haven't heard that for a really long time.
Not a day goes by
Without my wife reminding me
What goes wrong,
Yer causin’ it.
Maybe the best !
Jay Farrar 👍
and on it goes
What happened to the Boquist Brothers?
It’s all about TONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you never got to see Jay with Mike Heidorn and the Boquist brothers, I'm sorry. They were TIGHT.
Any original members left?
Pretty bitchin'. Always thought it was a Tele I heard on the studio recording, but he's doing it pretty well with a Les Paul.
the Les Paul , the better.
It's loaded with P90s so it will sound more like his Tele than humbucker loaded Les Pauls.
Mini humbucker in the bridge
"Whiskey Bottle!"
Found the Uncle Tupelo fan.
Omg! Tone for days
are Jay's eyes sewn shut?
and his jaw is wired shut
Credence Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor
My favorite Son Volt song, but in my opinion I always felt that this song has such a great riff that they should repeat it a second time before they break into the change where he sings, "You're with me now...." Anyone agree?
LOL I think he plays it just the way it should be.
Open your eyes!
Like it
NOOOOOO ! COME BAAAA CK
this sounds like the old Blue Note.
Post-punk alt-country classic...
Expedia rips you off.
Listen to how bad this sucks with the present line up. The Boquist brothers were the underrated badasses of this band.
What happened to the Boquist brothers? Why did they leave the band?
Jay did his solo bit. They did a song for the Escovedo tribute/fundraiser. Allegedly Jay wanted to do more but they couldn't come to terms. And I've been looking for them but can't find them.
I'll listen for the 400th time....yup,..... what the fuck are you talking about?

NEVER got the respect they deserved.....
reg...either do you, I, or anyone else....fuck it.
You go away fart knocker, we don't want you here
This is plutonium.
Unfortunately, Farrar never managed to match or better this first record.
Awesome
