I wore out every piece of music Uncle Tupelo put out when I was a teenager, and instead of going with Wilco like most people did I much preferred Son Volt. Nothing wrong with Wilco it's just a little bit more generic rock than the roots rock/country sound these guys had. This album stayed in my CD player my junior and senior year.
@@jameshayes9932 If varied, creative, exploring and experimenting are "woke" then I'm awake. lol Pretty crazy to try to cast that in a derogatory light. I enjoy them both, Jay is consistent quality. But it all can seem to sound a bit one-note at some point. I don't see how changing up your sound is a bad thing if it's still done in a high quality way. And IMO, Wilco is pretty high quality.
I heard this song one day on college radio in Tuscaloosa in 08. I tried to contact the station but it was no longer on air ..I had this song stuck in my head for years without knowing who it was or what it was called...torture until I finally found it by singing the melody to Google...life changing song I'll always cherish
@@hammill444 I remember eagerly listening to the first post-Tupelo albums from Jay (Son Volt) and Jeff (Wilco) and thinking that Son Volt would clearly have lasting mainstream success and Wilco would just fade away. Boy did I get that wrong. I hope Jay has made his peace with it.
@@ghostsharky Jay has always been arrogant and condescending-- I believe he always felt himself to be the better songwriter than the younger Jeff. I doubt he ever was driven towards mainstream success- but I don’t know for sure. But unlike Jeff, I felt the always smug Jay never really did grow much as a songwriter. Whereas Jeff never stopped growing.
Driving back to base after fixing my car that had been sitting on the lemon lot for 18 months to drive 8 hours to go see my girlfriend after coming back from Iraq and she has a guy over. Drove in the pouring rain to Atlantic Beach and waited for the sun rise. This song came on.
Had hears this song in the ether, but never knew it by name or band. Joined iTunes years ago and they gave me a complimentary song and put it in my iTunes playlist...Drown was the song. Thanks, iTunes.
Great song with clever lyrics. Definitely not your run-of-the-mill. I’d never heard this song or heard of this band until a couple days ago when one of the guys in our band suggested we cover it, so we’re gonna do it. The lead is easy enough but getting the hang of the rhythm guitar work will take me a minute for sure. It’s not that hard, just unusual; outside the box. I like!
Sky cracks open, walls falling to the floor Just as well to keep it, a guessing game in store You're with me now, will be again All other points in between And the cruel, cruel mornings Have turned to days of swim or sink If living right is easy, what goes wrong You're causing it to drown Didn't want to turn that way You're causing it to drown Doesn't make a difference now You're causing it to drown Silence knows, can't drown a heart Happenstance is falling through the cracks each day Too close now to change it Fool's gold is lighter anyway When in doubt, move on, no need to sort it out You're with me now, will be again All other points in between And I want to find the right side of you If living right is easy, what goes wrong You're causing it to drown Didn't want to turn that way You're causing it to drown Doesn't make a difference now You're causing it to drown Silence knows, can't drown a heart When in doubt, move on, no need to sort it out You're with me now, will be again All other points in between And I want to find the right side of you If living right is easy, what goes wrong You're causing it to drown Didn't want to turn that way You're causing it to drown Doesn't make a difference now You're causing it to drown Silence knows, can't drown a heart
Went to same high school Farrar and Heidorn went to. They were a year ahead of me. Same with Jeff Tweedy who was in Uncle Tupelo with them as several should know. Never knew them though.
_You're Cousin It._ Yeah, that's the one. The Cousin It song. I wouldn't have rememberd the name of the band. All I ever knew it as was the Cousin It song. It used to get overplayed on the radio When i was working as a trailer mechanic. Ninety-something. I only listened to the radio at the shop, in the truck I had tapes, at home I had CDs. Why would I listen to the radio when I could listen to Sepultura, Pantera, and Slayer?
That's funny, you triggered another memory. One when Grampy was alive. After you left I was going to walk out into the Sea and take a nap. So one day I asked Grampy for a rope. He said how long a rope? I said I don't know.. probably from here to there. And he's smarter than everyone else so he already knows what's the 411 right so he breaks it down like this.. inch by inches. I didn't have enough money left to afford the rope to die. So Ken said if you want 140. Dollar rope your not taking mine. I bet you don't remember that. How could you? You broke my heart.

love all 3
Wilco has gone a bit flaky..woke.
Son Volt has stayed consistent and the turtle wins the race.
I like Wilco,but I love Son Volt!
Most people went with Son Volt right after the split. Id say it wasnt til like 2000 when Wilco wouldve finally eclipsed Volt

Love it when that happens.. had the same experience with the song “Alex Chilton” by the replacements
I’ve searched for a song for 15 years once and heard it while on vacation in Clearwater Beach and the satisfying feeling is unmatched.
"Tennesee fire" by the silos was mine. Camp Pendleton 1989
Jay Farrar's voice is living integrity.
"Trace" is such a great record
Going to see Son Volt tomorrow night at the Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw NC. They're performing all the songs from Trace. Can't wait
That’s a wise decision by the band. They never did match their debut.
Jealous. How was it?

One of my favorite songs of the 90s. Good album too.
Best in Alt Country....
Country grunge... love it
Had no idea there was a video. Classic song
Odd. Saw vid b4 I heard it late 1995.
Loved them and it still holds up
Course 🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌🙌☮️
Somehow, I recall there was another video for this song. Favorite band!
You might be thinking of the Austin City Limits video of this.

Listen to the whole album. So good
This band had such a classic rick feel and look.😮
This song is right in my wheelhouse.
Kinda could be a rebirth of Poco. Great sound.
Best piece of “rock” last quarter century?
30 years now.
Great song
Best music ever made! 👍

My band is covering this too. Its an awesome song!
You need to do yourself a favor and check out Jay’s previous band, Uncle Tupelo.

Good song!!

I dated your ex-wife when she was still with Tweedy's little brother.
what state ...whate city... this music has a profound effect on me .....
Uncle tupelo I saw many times and was my favorite band for years
Long lost children of Linda Ronstadt and The Eagles…beautiful
What a great correlation. That's awesome.
Sounds as fresh today as it did then. Son Volt > Wilco. Hoping Jeff Tweedy doesn't read this comment. 🙂
Agreed!
Son Volt's first album > Wilco's first album. After that, I think it switches.
Yeah, Tweedy would "Hate it Here." Sorry, couldn't help it.
Sweet!!!
Don't know much about this band, but liked this music! It reminds me of REM.
Oddly enough, Peter Buck was producer on one of singer Jay Farrar’s earlier albums.
that's what I call High Quality
Hot damn.
You're Cousin It
good rock
Boquist Brothers are the best. Sooo…goood….
More cowbell!
Bruce Dickinson would be proud, I tell ya!

Ladies and gentlemen, Carl Grimes and the Walkers
It's like Sister Hazel, Bond Jovi, Kings of Leon. Can't tell if it's Country, or Rock music.
don't think I've ever seen Son Volt compared to Bon Jovi lol
