This is lyrically one of the most unique and best songs I've ever heard. A point of view on parenthood that isn't ever really spoken about: Not wanting kids/ genuine fear of having them bc you feel too selfish, irresponsible to take care of someone else, and that they would only inherit the worst parts of you. Thank u for making this song ❤
@@Anthony_The_Disney_Guy I have! I like her song too but St Vincent used the hook melody to tell a much different and less spoken about story than her, with the lyrics. Easton's song is a great jam tho

This is literally all I ever hear millennials and Gen Z saying about having kids, but maybe you're from a previous generation where this wasn't literally the default view. I am 35 and have never met another millennial who actually WANTED kids. this song made me stop what i was doing and smile. my family always asks when I'll have a baby with my long term partner. I'll throw roses on your grave Annie. For sure.
Every album from St. Vincent there is always a song I can just FEEL based on how creatively she crafts her genuine emotions into a song. This one fits in right with New York, Severed Crossed Fingers, Strange Mercy, The Party, and All My Stars Aligned
Honestly the Masseduction one for me is Happy Birthday, Johnny. But I think that you are spot on, its something I've always noticed but didn't know how to put it into words.
Verse 1] My baby loves me like a saint My baby hates when I'm away My baby wants a baby How can I go on? [Refrain] What in the world (What in the world) Would my baby say? "I got your eyes and your mistakes" You make a home (You make a home) I run away And the story starts again Then I couldn't stay in bed all day I couldn't leave like my daddy And I wouldn't be your only baby anymore [Verse 2] My baby's closer than a shave My baby's blue when I dye greys My baby wants a baby How can it be wrong, wrong? But I wanna play guitar all day Make all my meals in microwaves Only dress up if I get paid How can it be wrong, wrong? [Instrumental Break] [Refrain] What in the world, what in the world would my baby say? "I got your eyes and your mistakes" I wanna run, I wanna run, I wanna chase The еnding I can't see Then I won't have no legacy 'Causе I won't write no symphonies Won't have no streets named after me Won't even have your sympathy No one will scream that song I made Won't throw no roses on my grave They'll just look at me and say "Where's your baby?"
She knows. There's a BBC article where she talks about coming up with this song and then 24 hours later suddenly realizing she'd taken this from Sheena Easton but decided to just go with it anyway (presumably getting permissions so it's not plagiarism!). That's why I looked this up, the Sheena original is incredible pop, so I wanted to listen to the Indie twist. I like it!
In my humble opinion, I believe this song deals with society pressuring women to have children. The first verse has a woman talking about how her partner A.K.A her baby wants to have a baby. The lyrics then show her thoughts about having a baby and all the questions she has for how she will raise a baby, possibly revealing that she doesn't want to have the baby but is willing to have one because she must according to society. Then the second verse reveals she's had a baby and that her baby now wants to have his/her/their own baby continuing the cycle that she was sucked into. I'm not saying her child shared her resistance to having children but she is seeing her own child live out her life now. The verse then shows this woman reflecting on her life, not necessarily regretting her life but thinking about what desires she had earlier on in life before becoming a mother. The nail in the coffin for my analysis is in the final moments, No one will scream that song I made, Won't throw no roses on my grave, They'll just look at me and say, "Where's your baby?" This is a reflection on society that views women who don't have children as being less than those who do. It implies that women don't have worth unless they have children, an idea that Annie Clarke completely rejects and rebutts. Sorry for the long post but I've been listening to this song for a couple days now and just couldn't get it out of my head.
Agreed. For me , it’s quite a statement on the only two kinds of immortality that are really available to human beings. You can procreate, thereby passing on your genes and creating memories in your children OR you can not procreate and instead leave a legacy of your creative work that will live on in the minds and culture of a people . Of course one *could* do both. But it’s very hard and either endeavor could suffer and fail miserably for it. Much easier, and kind of sadder to just to pick one or the other.
What in the world, what in the world, would my baby say? I got your eyes and your mistakes I wanna run, I wanna run, I wanna chase The ending I can’t see Then I won’t have no legacy ‘Cause I won’t write no symphony Won’t have no streets named after me Won’t even have your sympathy No one will scream that song I made Won’t throw no roses on my grave They’ll just look at me and say Where’s your baby

This one has really grown on me. All of the songs on this album are great, but the lyrics and sound of this one blow me away. When that guitar solo kicks in...🤯
I love this album and the thing that makes it special to me is that Wirlitser Electric piano. My dad was a piano player and had the same one. He told me it had reeds or something in it. It could make sound without power. Love st Vincent !!!
Professional music artists can have an old pop song jangling around in their head just like any of us might have. So in a fit of artistic wrangling, they exorcize it out by reworking it into something new, INSPIRED by that original pop song, and making a whole new statement out of it. There is power and resonance in taking something people already know and reworking it. And in Annie's case, I think she's made a brilliant choice to make a powerful artistic statement about creativity and creation, or rather...pro-creation. It's ok for one artist to make something new out of something old from another artist, especially when the artist of the older piece is in on it.
I think that the Sheena Easton reference to her song morning train adds so much to this song, because morning train was about being so happy in a relationship and willing to make sacrifices for eachother, but this song is about someone worrying they will become unhappy in that relationship if a baby is introduced into the dynamic
