The foam clay for the sculpted mushrooms, the stick for the staff... This reminds me of one of my other favorite artists, Kira. Funnily enough, she also made a mushroom dress with which this hat would be SO CUTE with!!
Would you happen to have a link to a video or picture of the dress? I'm trying to get inspiration for a ren faire and would highly appreciate it! Thank you and no worries if you don't. have a good day/night/morning/evening!

You remind me so much of my grade 6 French teacher. She was so friendly and creative. Just like you. I will definitely continue watching you're channel! I also hope you are doing well! PS- I LOVE YOUR CAT 😭✨
When you said you were making this with as little sewing involved because it scares you, I promise you, I've never felt so seen because BIG SAME! This was a great tutorial!!
Jess! you can comprehend how happy this video makes me! I love witches and your work, this is the best of both worlds, I will definitely try to do that hat because my god is it beautiful, great work :DD
Can confirm that the name is gills or laplea this mushroom/fungi is commonly called a toadstool or the Alice in wonderland but it's actual name is fly agaric- sorry my dad has been teaching me mushroom they're really fascinating actually! For an evil witchy look id use shaggy ink caps (this in case someone wanted a darker look-) and Yes mushroom can indeed grow on mushrooms It's so pretty!!
I’ve been watching a lot of mushroom hat tutorials and every single one I’ve watched has used a different material! It’s very interesting watching people make similar things with different mediums!
I'm excited to see the result :> I think it's gonna be amazing! :DD [also Jess ty for the book tutorials :) they helped me make a journal for one of my characters ^-^]
Hey there we absolutely love your video! You asked if there was an easier way to make the gills and I just wanted to share with you how I would make them, as a seamstress. I would have used a long rectangle of your white fabric, and ran a gathering stitch by hand or by machine on both long sides. You would pull the gathering stitches tighter for the inside part and they would be farther apart for the outside edge. You can totally hot glue this down too. The bigger the gathering stitches you take the bigger the gills flaps will be. I hope that helps keep up the great videos. And hit me up if you need any sewing advice.
Yes pleating, but even easier would be long strip as wide as the brim then just do the glueing and gathering things till everything is properly put together😊
Great personality! Absolutely Amazing project! I'm absolutely blown away here. I clicked your project video because I just finished crocheting a witch hat and thought that since my search was a crochet witch hat that yours too was crochet. It wasn't but was still very inspiring because now I still want to crochet this hat. I just crocheted a mushroom hat a few weeks ago from a pattern that I purchased from littlexhumancrochets and it looked so fabulous! You are a very talented individual. Thank you so much for sharing your project. Now, I'm off to figure it out!
As soon is I saw this I was like AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH JESS LESS POSTED I am so happy now Also I love all your videos And I just finished making your ranboo memory book Also at the end you are just so PRETTY
Fantastic build! If you are going to the Rein Faire in Irwindale next month, please stop by Briar and the Rose Designs booth (jewelry) I'd love to see your creation in person!
Omg I just thought of something that would be so cute with this: a mushroom basket with the felt inside so Mumbo could chill in it! Every witch needs a familiar!
I too am an audible fanatic. I love the book tomorrow tomorrow tomorrow. I just finished it. And you’re right you do think about it after you’re finished reading it. I love tuxedo kitties too! I belong to a mushroom group so, I am going to try my hand at making that hat. Great video!
For the "gills", cut out the same donut as the hat twice. Pleat & pin as you go. Take it to the sewing machine & straight stitch it all the way around.
MUSHROOM QUEEN!!!!! I got obsessed with mushrooms last semester, after studying them for school and having to walk through the woods to find them. Since then, I have a pinterest board dedicated to the lil guys as well as plenty of mushroom drawings. It looks so great!!! The staff has to be my favorite part of the whole costume. The mushrooms on it are just such a beautiful red
I was trying to figure out how to use my witch hat and also mix it with mushroom theme. Thanks for the great ideas.. will definitely add some woody mushrooms growing on my hat and try to create a staff 😍
A year and a half ago, one of my friends made her own mushroom costume for Halloween and it was amazing! The hat was gigantic and the dress was so detailed. She really is good at this stuff. And I love your stuff. You always make really cool things like this. Things that I wish I had the skills to do 😩
You could go outside and collect the dried up flat mushrooms on trees, they basically turn into wood! And they are very light once dried. You can desinfect them by steaming them in the ven or just baking them, maybe boiling too, if they are strong enough, and then dry them, to get rig of bugs. They hold up very well, I used some for my lizard's terrarium
Seeing these projects always makes me so happy because OMG IT LOOKS SO GOOD (I just came from your Mushroom Dress video lol) and it inspires me to make stuff, even though atm I can't really afford to. BUT I WILL WHEN I CAN!
for the gill things you might could try sewing it-? I'm no expert, so don't take my word for it I have to wing stuff too lol (cosplays on a budget are kinda hard to do lol especially when you have no clue what you're doing :,) )
I love this mushroom genre thing. I also enjoy learning about fungi (mostly mushrooms) so this really is so fun to know other people are like me! Even if they don't know about mushrooms
i want to thank you SO much for this tutorial! i recreated it and i do have a few tips for you or anyone looking to also make one. so instead of fabritac i was able to find the gorilla glue spray adhesive. i ended up finding and trying both with the foam and felt and the gorilla glue adhesive is SO much better. you get a quicker and stronger bond but it definitely needs to sprayed w proper ventilation. as for the gils, i was able to a long strip of fabric thats a bit wider than the depth of the brim and use that gather your gils. this is my second mushroom hat and i did the same thng you did here the first time and the long skinny strips were so much easier! hope this helps!
Thanks for the shout out! 🙌🙌
You’re project turned out great!

for the clay, use tinfoil as a base and cover it in clay so it can dry faster and you can get the most of it

I saw someone use lace scraps for the gills and it looked very realistic!
