I was skeptical about trying this recipe because it doesn't have baking powder but tried it anyway because it seemed to have turned out just fine in the video and it seemed to have worked out for some people in the comments. It did not for me. The cake did not rise at all , it was dense, and I am not new to baking, so I think I will stick to what I know works. I just really hate wasting ingredients!

The top part of the cake was perfect but the bottom half of the cake was dense and oily. Looks like the oil separated and sunk to the bottom of the cake. Does the oil need to be emulsified before adding to the batter? what did I do wrong/

Purpose of baking powder is to chemically form bubbles that will be trapped in the mix . By beating the eggs we incorporate bubbles mecanically. So beating the eggs replaces baking powder basically.

Fold is where it went wrong
It is better to mix in the oil after eggs and sugar are combined.

You don't use baking powder if you use self raising or cake flour.
Can i beat all the wet ingredients together and just fold in the flour?

Both are quite nice.
Using oil (even though not the same) feels like using melted butter. They both taste amazing
