Just started sophomore year and I first heard this song in second grade. Still sing this in my head when remembering different types of figurative language
i have to learn this song!! My class is all bringing in gangster clothes cause i think we are making a video or taking pictures of us while we are doing it!!
Oops! The person who wrote this song seems to be confused about what figurative language is. Figurative language is using words in a non-literal way. “Figurative” is the opposite of “literal”. When someone leaves the room and says, “Hit the lights,” they don’t mean for you to literally “hit” the lights. It’s an idiom (one type of figurative language). Metaphors, similes, personification, and hyperbole are also types of figurative language because they are all literary devices that use words to mean something different from their literal meanings. Sound devices are NOT figurative language. Rhythm, rhyme, repetition, onomatopoeia, alliteration, assonance, and all the other sound devices are NOT figurative language. They are not being used to mean something other than their literal definitions. One could argue that there is nothing MORE literal than a sound device. It’s time people who make cute little songs start doing some research before misleading and confusing the young people who are being exposed to this nonsense. You have to learn it before you can teach it, or else you further perpetuate the cycle of misinformation like this song does.
