Fred Zinnemann, the director of "The Search", which was filmed by MGM in Germany in 1947, accepted Ivan Jandl's Oscar on the boy's behalf because by the time that the award had been announced, the communists had taken over Czechoslovakia and wouldn't allow Ivan to travel to the United States to receive his award. This totally reprehensible and vindictive act effectively killed what could well have been a very promising film career in Hollywood for the very talented Ivan.

For technical reasons, my original screen name, darrenburnfan, has since been changed to David Rayner.

Interesting and sad story. He died from complications of diabetes at age 50. Heartbreaking!
