I really enjoyed this tutorial! I used to sew a lot of mine & my daughter’s clothes and the cutting slits for rounded edges, v-necks & squared edges is exactly what seamstresses do to get nice, smooth edges so, this made perfect sense to me! I’m gonna take the plunge & try this in my kitchen since I’m now, unfortunately, on disability and cannot afford the granite countertops I want so badly! This is a great idea. A cost effective way to update older counter tops. A few things to remember like the tomato based products, but overall, a great idea.

I absolutely love this! What a great way to change your kitchen without spending thousands of dollars! I've been looking at houses, I'm wanting to move closer to my Children and it seems like the first thing I notice is I would need to redo the counter, backslash and cabinets. Thank you!!! I'm so glad this helps with your search. I know how it feels to look at everything that needs to be done and be overwhelmed. Our house is a major fixer upper. I know I'll remodel the kitchen in a year or two but couldn't live with it any longer! This solution will hold up until I'm ready to renovate. It's been 2 years, it'll last another 2 if it needs to. I've done several little things around the house like paint, stencil the floors etc just to get by until I can come back and do major renovations. It's a fun process! Good job. I’ve just recently done my kitchen and am very happy with it. I used masking tape around the sink before siliconise it, got to say it is super neat doing it that way.

Clean the surface with water mixed with a little bit of baby shampoo. That makes a residue free surface. That is what you use to apply window tint.

I'll jump!!! I'm going to FINALLY apply the contact paper to my kitchen countertops & backsplash 🤗...before the rolls dry-rot! I want to use several coats of sealant or plexiglass on the counters. Have U thought about doing/using either?
I did think about it but decided not to since I planned on mine being temporary and I can replace small sections as needed. But I have seen others use polycrylic (not polyurethane, that would yellow) just make sure it's kitchen grade if you go that route. Some of them aren't safe to prepare food on. I've also seen people use clear epoxy over the top of the contact paper. If you want to make it more permanent and durable I'd probably go with an epoxy. Good luck with your countertops! I'm sure they'll turn out great!
Have you ever tried adding polycrylic as a sealer over the contact paper. I have painted mine multiple times and of course sealed with the poly, but wondered if this wouldent help with durability and shine.

Agreed! The music is louder than her voice. I had to really focus to hear what she was saying and not be distracted by the loud music. But the content is great!

Just bought the same contact paper to do my countertops! How much of an overlap at the seams did you do? Great video and loved the curved corner solution! My counters are all curved edges so this will come in handy. Thank you.
Awesome, thank you! You don't need much of an overlap, between 1/4-1/2 inch is good. I've found that overlapping keeps it from peeling up at all and it looks less like a seam. I watched a few videos, even the ones with using Windex. I prefer using your method. I do not have a craft bone in my body. But, like you, I am a wife and mother. With the whole Stay Home order, I suppose this is a good time to do something to these counter tops. Thank you for such simple instructions. If only our kids would take our simple advise, right?

Thank you! I believe I bought 5 or 6 rolls, I had some left over. I did my entire kitchen, bar and backsplash with that. It took me a couple days, I just spent the evening after work working on it. I could've done it in one day if I had waited for a day off work to do it.

Where did you get your contact paper from. I only did my back splash and a small 2 person table top with the same paper I got it at the dollar store. Do you think it's ok to put the same paper on my counter tops I rent here and I have been here for 6 years I painted the wall last summer white and did my cabinets a beige taracotta and the paper is the same color but with specks of other browns it looks like stone kinda. I also layed peel and stick flooring on my kitchen and by the way I am 67 so I am proud of my self.

Thank you! Yes I was, and I do try to avoid it but I've been in a hurry and sat something hot down when I didn't have room anywhere else and didn't have a hot pad on the counter. I haven't had any burn marks or anything else happen as a result.

Yeah I understand, my kitchen is always a disaster lol. I'm surprised there aren't stains literally everywhere. We've just tried to make a habit of wiping the counters down afterwards. Maybe you could do a darker contact paper? I couldn't believe how many options there are.

That's brilliant! Have you had to replace any of the clear contact paper where it's stained? Just curious if it will peel up without damaging the contact paper underneath. I am going to try that though!

Love the end result! Quick question, if you overlapped the large sections, wouldn't the overlapped areas show?🤔
Thank you! I did a follow up video on this if you want to check it out and I believe I showed the overlapping areas better in that one. I only overlap the pieces by about 1-4 or 1/2 inch. That's just enough to make sure the old counter doesn't show through and the contact paper sticks to itself really well creating a seal so nothing gets underneath it. It's not noticeable unless you are staring right at it, even then it's not majorly noticeable.

Thank you! Yes it will stick to granite and any other polished stone finish. If your edges are more detailed it might just take a little more work to contour that contact paper around the edges of the counter.

Thank you! It won't damage the countertops at all. You can remove the contact paper easily and it doesn't leave anything behind.

Thank you! I've gotten a couple of suggestions for protection over the contact paper (I haven't tried these myself). You can put clear contact paper over the pattern contact paper. You could use epoxy over the countertop if you want to make it more permanent. I've also heard others have used a couple of coats of kitchen safe water-based polycrylic. Hope that helps!
@@TheNiftyNester thats crazy cause i was thinking the same of the clear contact paper omg.I tired the waterproof sealer the one that is milky and it didnt work at all.I got to redo my counter tops over ...TYSM I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR HONESTLY SOOOO MUCH
And i seen a lady on YT use the epoxy and it came out so dope but the only thing bout it is that it take like 2to3 weeks for you to use your tops again.
i cnt wait that long at all lol....but its the best to use for a protection.

Where the sections overlap, couldnt yoi cut dn middle of it and peel back on both side and it would lay side by side butted up together?
As far as the "stain" thing...yes you DO need to wipe immediately as it happens. I always clean up as I anyhow when I cook because, it's less time taking after dinner that you need to worry about
Great tutorial! A few questions: What about a counter top that has a small bevelled edge? Also, I have heard of some using an additional glue, a spray adhesive, do you have any thoughts on that? Thank you so much!!
Thank you! You should be able to wrap it around the bevel the same way, just making sure to get it smoothed out around that extra angle. As long as you have that area underneath the edge to staple the contact paper down after you've wrapped the edge I don't think you'd have any issues. As far as the additional adhesive I would be weary of doing that unless you're going to be doing epoxy over it and want it to be more permanent. I like the fact that I can replace a small section if it gets stained, and I still haven't had any issues with it trying to peel off. I'm getting ready to post an update within the next few weeks and I'll show how it's held up over the last 1 1/2 years. There is a couple stains but nothing I can't live with, but knowing I can easily pull it up to replace it is a nice benefit.

So basically we have a very large kitchen with lots of counter space and difference levels, and a high counter for bar stools etc. Husband and I go back and forth as to if it is worth it... he worries that it will not look good. Also, you could put a coat of polyacrylic to make it sealed!!
My concern is matching at the seams. Like regular wall paper, is there a match pattern to look for?
I was worried about the same thing. There isn't a pattern to follow like with wallpaper and the marble pattern blends really well along the seams. I just laid the sections next to each other before applying them to make sure they would blend well and switched them around if I needed to before applying them.
If you use a blow dryer on high heat around the edge where it wraps under the countertop, it won't require stapling.
I've seen the blow dryer trick but didn't really like the way it looked wrinkled when it shrank up around the edges. It does seem like a good option though.

I got mine at Lowe's, they also have it on Amazon. I think it's just called a manual staple gun. They're not too expensive and they're really handy to have around. And thank you!

Does it matter if the contact paper is under the toaster and microwave?
That's a great question! And the first time I think I've been asked that, I'll have to add it to my list of responses on my blog. No, it does not. Or at least it has not been any issue for me at all. I have my toaster, coffee pot and ice maker on the counter at all times. I use an electric griddle and a deep fryer occasionally as well without any issues. I know you're not supposed to put heat directly on it, but we have (mistakenly) several times, taking things out of the oven, and it hasn't even left a burn mark.
I am about to do this process with my moms 70 year old kitchen . She does not have any rounded corners thank goodness . I am so nervous about the sink . The space in back and the sides . Do I do the sink in different pieces? The color I chose was a beige marble.
Yeah I would cut a piece a little bigger than needed for behind the sink and install it using the exacto knife to trim it around the sink and a spatula to push it under the lip. Then on the sides you'll do one piece on each side. When you're done and you add the silicone to the sink it'll all be fine and the silicone will keep the water from getting underneath it. I’ve watched several videos of people applying contact paper and everyone seems to explain it on a straight counter however what happens when your counter is L-shaped and you need to go in a different direction when you overlap do you cut out the underneath piece and how do we match the pattern.
I have a couple corners, mine is a U shaped counter. Sorry I didn't include that. I always run from the back edge of the counter to the front edge. When you get to a corner where it's an L, just run it from the back of the counter on one side and it'll lay over the corner running towards the other side of the L. Then on the other side of the corner run a piece from the back edge down over the front edge, with the edge of the paper wrapping over right where there front corner is. That piece will lay over the bottom of the piece before it. I hope that isn't too confusing. You'll game m have one piece of the corner running side to side and the other back to front but it isn't noticeable.

Good question! It creates a seal around your sink (or stove, if your stove is like mine) and helps to keep the water or anything else from getting underneath the contact paper. Without it the contact paper would probably peel up in those areas pretty quickly.
You can just replace it with another piece of contact paper. That’s the nice thing about contact paper.

I had mine for 2 years now it is the same as yours. It is stained so i am ready to replace it.
It's surprising how well it holds up being as inexpensive as it is. 2 years is pretty good!

Sorry I'm just now seeing your comment! I don't think I've seen it done with epoxy but I've seen people use polycrylic. I would imagine epoxy would be a more durable and permanent finish though.

Hey! I actually painted the cabinets with a cheap paint from Walmart. I loved the color as well but it hasn't held up well at all lol. I gave away my left over paint so I don't know what color it was, sorry!

When you were taking the old contact paper off from around the sink, it looked as if it had been underneath the sink rim. Had you lifted the sink when you did it the first time?
I didn't lift the sink but the contact paper is thin enough that when I installed it I was able to push the contact paper under that rim with my spatula and used the exact-o knife to trim it off from underneath the rim. Then I just resealed it with the silicone.

I'm very nervous about papering around my sink and the way you did the front and back slips of paper is what I will do. Also I will try to push the paper under the rim and use silicone sealant.
