    Hello,
    you have a beautiful garden 😍 great that your palm trees survive the winter without protection 👍
    I have to protect my palm trees in winter, in February 2021 I had -19 ⁰C 🥶
    Best wishes
    Peter 🌴

      Hi Peter and thank you.
      I don’t envy your weather but I do appreciate your dedication to growing palm trees in such a cold climate. Thanks for watching.

    Mate, the SOCK and the COAT have made my day!!! Much respect from me 😁 That's how we roll. Another great video, and a treasure to see your garden in the frost. An evergreen garden is beautiful no matter the season and you've capitalised on that. Great to see your chamaedorea radicalis, mine was a casualty last winter, looks great next to the ferns and carex. Also good to see the benefit of creating your own microclimates. Really enjoyed this walkabout, thank you!

      Hi. Yeah the sock was probably taking it a bit too far but it was cold dark and late at night so I did it in a panic.
      Sorry to hear you lost your Chamaedorea I remember seeing it and it was a good size. I’ve never had problems with mine so I’m surprised you lost it. Are you on clay? I think drainage is important with these and some overhead cover. I think I will definitely get a couple more in the future.
      Cheers

      @ Bang on, lots of clay where that was planted. I did manage to mix it up with compost and manure but with hindsight, there was nowhere near enough drainage. I plan to replace that one, so an expensive lesson learnt! They’d look amazing as a cluster and you have lots of overhead that they could benefit from. Have a lovely week!

    Glad to see your garden is bearing up in the frigid temperatures. You are so right about thinking about planting the right anchor plants that can take it. I’ve enjoyed your detailed review of your plants gave me a few ideas of plants to try in my garden. Here in 8b of Pensacola Fl we just had a week of chilly weather temps to -2 C but very windy giving us wind chills briefly to -8 C. Thankfully I have a nice garage to protect my really sensitive plants and dwarf banana bearing plants. Still looking forward to you spring remodeling of the garden

      Thank you. I have a few more hardy evergreens to add in spring that I’m looking forward to planting that are different from what I already have so hopefully they will add a bit more interest. Cheers

      Cheers Diane. -3.5 last night which is still a mild winter for my garden hopefully this is as cold as it gets this winter and we can start to think about spring soon.

      Yes. I have 3 different birds in the garden that follow me around hoping I will move some pots or disturb the soil. I’ve literally just brought some more bird feed to help them through this cold spell.

    Great video. I've got a lot of hardy tropicals. My oldest is a cordyline which has never been fleeced and stands as tall as my bedroom (it's to front / side corner of my house). Even the beast from the east didn't get it.
    Great tour.

      Hi and thank you. I don’t ever protect my green Cordylines as they are quite a bit hardier than some of the more colourful varieties. Below -5 I try to protect the Cordyline Torbay Dazzlers as a few years ago the new growth got badly damaged and it took a whole season to grow out.

      @tikitropicals65 Yeah, I'm the same but did notice 3 dead in containers at a bike shop. Inam tempted by the more tender ones but we are clay based, so we don't want to risk it.

    Yep, it’s definitely that time of the year, especially when I get enthusiastic about my small patch. Unfortunately it’s still too nippy to work in it as I found out last Friday.
    Thank you sharing such wonderful selection of hardy plants. I’m going to look around for some of these mentioned in the video.
    Most of my patch is facing a NNW direction which allows sun in April, however, the area I’m scheming to open up will receive sun a lot earlier. 2 of the background plants are arriving soon.

      Hi and thank you. The weather is cold and miserable but it is a great time for planning and researching so when spring comes we can get the jobs done and hopefully spend summer enjoying our gardens.

      Thank you. I think the fact that when I started this garden my first winter of 2010 which was one of the coldest on record and it was frozen for nearly all of December made me realise if I wanted to carry on down the Tropical root I would need to have a good percentage of hardy plants that could cope with most winters. I love the hardy evergreen backbone and then the tenders in summer help complete the look.
      Cheers.

    Great Vid as usual. Ever thought about getting a Butia? They seem quite hardy if kept dry during the winter.

      @tikitropicals65  12 дней назад

      Hi and thank you. I used to have a Butia many years ago and I lost it in a colder than usual winter and I decided not to replace it. I would really like to get a Jubaea this year though as I feel the garden does need a big feather palm.
      Cheers

    Great vid, its all looking so lovely in January. I think the sock method could be better than my hairband method! Is the Torbay Dazzler half shade? It looks so comfy there !

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  13 дней назад

      Thank you. The Torbay Dazzlers is probably in my sunniest part of the garden and gets full sun for most of the day. Also gets plenty of winter sun too which helps through the colder months.
      Cheers.

    It's cool that some people is really like tropical vibes. I live in this tropical country but I want snow 😅 is that making any sense?

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  15 дней назад +2

      Hi. I love the snow but just not in my garden and on my plants. For me I grow tropical plants in the cold wet U.K. because I want to feel like I’m somewhere more exotic and have that holiday feel. I can come home from work and sit in the garden and feel like I’m transported somewhere else. I think sometimes it’s human nature to want what we don’t have in our normal life.
      Cheers

    The main enemy of all these plants is winter humidity which, combined with the cold, becomes fatal to them! Most can easily tolerate dry cold!

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  16 дней назад

      Hi. I agree wet and humid weather in cold winters can be a real killer for plants. In the U.K. cold and wet in winter is almost a given so for me it’s about finding plants that can cope with that and using microclimates to make a more favourable climate than the surrounding conditions.
      Cheers

    I am struggling with the garden at the moment. My garden gets no sun in December to end of January, so its currently a freezer. I have a lot of trachycarpus planted, but they are small. Trying to create an overhead canopy is the key, but at the garden looks like its took a lot of damage 😕

    • @tikitropicals65
      @tikitropicals65  15 дней назад

      Hi. Hopefully you’ve not had it too cold. These type of gardens can look quite bad in the winter months until the garden matures and you get that height. Sometimes building a structure like a pergola or gazebo if you have room and budget can give you instant height and interest plus a bit of extra protection from the cold and wet.
      The Trachycarpus you have planted will create a great hardy backbone in the future. They will also make the garden shadier in winter so finding plants like Fatsias and Aucubas that can cope with those conditions will help in the future.
      Cheers and thanks for commenting

      @tikitropicals65 North facing garden unfortunately...a right pain in the winter. I am expecting losses so will be getting a few things over the next few months to reshape the garden in the spring. I am going to follow your example and get a few good hardy evergreens...just to give that all year interest. I think I may get a few bigger trachycarpus....just to get that look...I prefer planting them small as they seem to do better....just been outside and the small ones planted are absolutely frozen...so not sure if they will make it
