MORNING ROUTINE - SUMMER 2018

- My morning routine isn't all that sophisticated, but here's what it is, as of summer 2018. I get up pretty early, I film a little, I edit a video, and then I go for a run. There's coffee, but not much else. I don't really stretch before or after the run. And I usually skip breakfast. I wouldn't really recommend following my example.

Such an underrated youtuber. This is my favorite channel by far
Thanks so much!
kofuzi lmao you made my day. Seriously though, the content you put out is wayy better than the majority, and I can tell you enjoy what you do. Thank you🙏
I do enjoy it
Very true ! 👍
I appreciate your openness on your morning routine. I wake-up at 4:30AM and I am out the door on the running paths by 5AM in order to avoid the Texas heat. Even at that time, the temp can be pushing above 85 degrees with high humidity...IMO, still better than running on a treadmill. I will walk the first 5 minutes while doing some ballistic stretches to wake my body and clear the cobwebs out of my head so I don't run into a sign. Upon return, I drink a cold electrolyte drink that I made the night before (since I sweat profusely) and follow that up with a protein shake. Nothing special, nothing glamorous, but it works for me.
I've been drinking a sports drink after runs lately. I don't know how much it makes a difference over water. But I've been enjoying it.
Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Thanks so much for your patience
You have the discipline to wake up so early! I'm a night runner person. I run at dusk then come home for dinner after cooling down. I actually prefer it as there's much less people running at night, and it's cool enough.
I used to run in the evenings back before we had kids. And I enjoyed it. But these days, anything I save for the end of the day frequently gets skipped or rescheduled. Life just gets in the way.
Finally I found someone wake up that early. I wake up normally around 3:30 - 4 am recently as I found it is more easy to make my running plan under control in early morning than in the late evening after work. Really enjoy the serenity in early morning and my 24hrs of a day seems much longer!
Agree on all fronts
i just ran in the pegasus turbp today for the first time. and i love them. they are going to be my daily trainers from now on.
so glad you like them!
Tried running at night after work but it feels like I'm not into it some days, maybe because of the amount of work I did, aand usually ending up already drained even before warming up. I hope I could do your morning routine as well. Keep on creating, loving how straightforward yet fruitful your vids are. Cheers!
for that reason, when the weather/temperatures permit, i love running in the mornings.
I was so shocked when I saw that you liked my Instagram photo. It is an honor to be seen by the great kofuzi. c:
Also do you have any tips for cross country running? I remember you saying that you ran it in high school.
My major tip would be to listen to your coach and make sure to keep an open dialogue with your coach.
Other than that, I'd say that the best way to improve your xc performance is to run year round. I'm not saying you should have the same intensity year round, but you shouldn't take too long of a complete break between seasons
my two-year old is the alarm clock ... he gets up around 5. morning run in the running stroller works like magic to get him another hour of sleep. dig your work, man
I generally wish my kids enjoyed the jogging stroller. But tbh, on a lot of days, I'm glad they don't.
Morning routine goals, I get up at 5:15 every day to run but I don’t run nearly as many miles as you do.
Awesome video! I think it’s also important to note that the sun rises a little earlier in Chicago as apposed to like Houston where sun doesn’t rise till nearly 7. I’m sure it’s more common to wake up earlier in Chicago just because of the sun!
Over the course of the year, my running start time does adjust somewhat to coincide with the sunrise. And then once we're in full blown winter, I switch to afternoon run commuting.
Hi thanks for another really good video, you have an amazing amount of energy to do all that starting from 3.30-4am your passion for running & fitness is inspiring, yeah I’m the same I go for a run in the morning before breakfast, & I’m the same only really need something light like a banana with maybe some dates if you are doing a longer run 20kms or more, one thing that I find that really helps is some lemon squeezed into a glass of water 10min before your run, you should try it for awhile absolutely improves your running even makes the run feel a lot easier. Have you changed your diet much since your early days of running, I’ve found by cutting back on meat & milk products, change for soya or almond milk & tofu goes well with running, like to see you do a video on diet ideas routine, keep up the good work :-)
My wife and I went mostly vegetarian coincidentally just about a half year before I returned to running from a substantial break
Hi Mike, I have just discovered your channel on the weekend and slowly making my way through your content. Your video's are awesome and your journey by the look of it has been amazing. I am just starting out on my running journey. About 6 weeks in after many years lay off. Have my first 'City to Surf' 11k in four weeks! Your routine almost is the same as mine! Thanks for posting all the videos i cant wait to watch more!! Rod from New Zealand :)
Thanks so much fir watching! Good luck on your upcoming race!
I start work at 5 so I am up by 2:15 to be to the gym by 3.my a.m. run is usually on a treadmill and if I have energy I try to get out after work. It nice to know I am not the only crazy person up at 3. Love the videos keep up the good work
That's early. Wow.
Living in Texas I try to run mornings due to the temps. I am not a breakfast person either. Typically don’t eat my first meal till lunch. I usually get up walk around the house sipping water do some light mobility stretches and pulls if I feel a little tired or stiff and head out ASAP usually 430am. Nothing special usually.
While I envy Texas in the winter, I don't know how you guys do it in the summer
Gotta say love your videos and your insights on running , I’m a beginning runner , i usually run on my early weekend mornings and do close about 8 miles on the weekends not too much but I’m just getting use to running and pacing myself. Just bought both the Pegasus 35 and Pegasus turbo which will be my daily rotations for my runs on the weekends and thanks to your reviews on those shoes that i went for it and bought them , i look forward to testing out the Pegasus 35 and turbo this weekend . Have a great weekend , and keep up the good work on your videos 👍🏻
Thanks so much for watching! Those are fun shoes! I hope you enjoy!
kofuzi I definitely will 👍🏻 tried both on and they feel comfy , so I’m ready to put these shoes to use this weekend , can’t wait
Kudos for your commitment and discipline to wake up so early to accomplish so much stuffs while mot mere mortal like myself is still lying down dreaming....
it's not popular to say it these days, but i've long held the mantra that sleep is a habit
What time do you usually leave the house to begin the run? Do you ever choose to or need to wear a headtorch?
A headtorch review would be great 👌🏻
It's something that's been on my to do list.
I try to run commute in the winter so I can get some extra light and sonits a few degrees warmer. But if it's a morning run, I'm usually out the door around 530am
How much sleep do you get? I usually get only 4-5 hours of sleep and wake up around 4am everyday. I run at least 30 minutes everyday and i feel im beating myself up NOT because of the running but because I don’t sleep enough. Thoughts on sleep?
No one is getting enough sleep. My three month average is about 6 hours per my watch, but it rarely feels like I am getting even that much.
@@kofuzi i think at least 6 hours would make a big difference not only in my running but overall function. I think its the excitement to run that gets me through, not rest and nutrition.
3:00 or 3:30 am, with kids and a wife? What time do you and your kids go to bed? That's incredible discipline!
That's commitment! Well done!
Thanks!
So you're only getting 6-7 hrs of sleep. That sounds tiring.
Sleep is a habit
@@kofuzi you should read up on matthew walker
How did you get your body used to running this mileage first thing in the morning? I am lightheaded if I dont have a solid mean prior to a run, and definietly can't get the energy in the morning.
getting used to running in the morning is like getting used to running. gradual increases.
What kind of music do you listen while running? Have you tried Drum & bass?
Depends on the mood/energy needs. Ranges from podcasts, emo, rap, symphony, and electronic
I made a playlist on spotify, it's mostly Drum & bass but has a little of other genres of music. It can help you out with the pace, I chose all the songs and they have a bitrate of 165-180 bpm, so if you go with the beats of the songs you'll have the same amount on steps per minute. Would be really cool if you can check it out and try it. I'll leave the link below :D open.spotify.com/user/1282446287/playlist/0ax73ImuIE8flzlm0tYr0N?si=I9IqD5hLSm-ia2JHVXE6hg
I love the idea of a bpm playlist. But unfortunately, I don't use Spotify. I might need to change that up though
Any advice for a beginner? I want to start running but I want a routine to stick with
I would say don't rush it. It's about creating habits, not setting paces.
I made a video about it

Thank you for another great video 👍🏃🏼
thanks for watching!
I have been running on and off since feb 2017. I have taken running seriously since Oct 2017 as part of my goal of entering a 70.3 ironman. Im now in the midst of transitioning from evening runs to early morning runs. I have been struggling to say the least! Did you have a transition period on running early mornings?
Yes. It is hard to wake up early to run. My body didn't like it at first; legs always felt like jelly. And I had to poop in the middle of what seemed like every run.
Then, my body figured out what's up. And then, I gradually got to my current wake up time, creeping earlier 15 to 30 minutes at a time.
kofuzi thanks for the reply. So it is normal hahaha
being that you live in Chicago, is there any fear or things that you have seen while running early in the morning in the city? Great video btw 🤙🏻
I feel safe where I live. I feel safe where I run. I might feel different if I were a woman, unfortunately.
I made a video a while back about safety.
ruclips.net/video/MLmZuUaifuY/видео.html
But the closest I've come to feeling unsafe was this video about Chicago Gun Crime. I was on the news.
ruclips.net/video/892MbAOgzu0/видео.html
U should do a video on how to stay motivated/consistent in running and daily routines
Ok.
In the meantime, there's this
ruclips.net/video/QYBCvFNjLkA/видео.html
I love early morning running, but what can you do when you have to be at work at 7:00 and I need an hour to take a shower get ready and drive there.
That's early. Some days, I have a strict time when I have to be somewhere. But most days, it's pretty flexible. But my daughter loves being early to school, so she keeps us all moving in the morning.
Dedication! Good on you.
Thanks!
So how do you feel after your long run in the morning afterwards?
Rushed
nice routine, but could you please make another nowadays morning routine video, I guess it changed a lot, thanks
Dang, so you sleep like 5-6 hours a night? That’s crazy. Do you catch up on sleep on the weekends?
I usually wake up at 5 and do a morning run. Out in California it’s been really hot and because of the fires the air quality sucks but I still try and do it. I get back at 6, maybe a little after. I shower, get ready, and then head to work.
I sleep in a little bit in the weekends. But I just enjoy getting out there with the sunrise. I sometimes accidentally take a nap in the evenings after dinner. I'm an old man.
@kofuzi I also use an Aeropress or a V60 for my coffee! I never thought I'd say that to someone, but I'm jealous of your ability to go number 2 in the morning. My "bio breaks" are very irregular, and it makes me quite uneasy going out for my run knowing that I haven't gone to the toilet yet. More often than I like I run into gastric distress during longer runs or harder workouts because of that.
I am a morning person but I simply cannot run in the morning. The perceived effort is much higher than at any other time of the day for me, and my legs feel "off". Maybe just a matter of getting used to it.
i really enjoy morning running, and after a while, my body got into the routine of regularity. if i run later in the day, it's a crapshoot
#dadjoke
ossfos are the best recovery sandal wear them all day around the house lol and yes morning is usually the best time to run for me too as most of the race are done in morning so makes sense to me to train the body to run first thing and its nice to have night off to relax and recover for the next day
I've always thought that it was an additional benefit for morning runners that races are in the mornings.
My wife bought two pairs of oofos. The other pair is her house slipper
kofuzi thanks for all your replies. Keep up the great running info out there
Do you do any strength training?
For a while, I was doing really well with regular push ups, pull ups, and an work. And then winter happened and I never got back into it.
I have always hated legs exercises, and generally avoid the gym these days
#TimeManagementGoals
Well, my running routine does involve a cup of cereal before running but other than that, I also find it quite hard to stick to a routine of stretching. Funny thing, I have found stretching to be quite good to improve my times, because I begin on a faster pace, but yeah, I wake up at five am, six days a week, so not to many neurons open at that time 😁
I know the feeling
What time do you go to bed???
9 or 10
You should make a video showing your entire running shoes collection or “running arsenal”:)
I've been thinking about it, as I am about to retire a couple pairs. But it's not a big collection. Maybe seven or eight?
you ever try wearing a visor instead of a hat? i cant wear hats because my head overheats and i start sweating too much.
Visors always look funny on me. And on most Asians, it seems.
love from pakistan
Your jogging edit is awesome!
Thanks so much!
Review saucony freedom iso 2
Unfortunately, I like won't get to those. I have a hard time with shoes that have stability elements to them
what time do you sleep? does your wife wake up when your alarm goes off?
these days, i go to bed at the same time as the girls. around 9ish, give or take an hour. my wife doesn't wake up for my alarm. or her alarm. or any alarm.
Oh my word man how on earth do you get up so early!!!
It's been a gradual progression. Earlier. Then earlier. Then earlier. I hope I don't have to go any earlier than this.
kofuzi if you got up any earlier there would be no point in going to bed! What time do you go to bed?!
i usually go to bed around 9 or 10. sometimes, the girls will stir or wake up in the middle of the night (anywhere between midnight to 2am). when that happens, i often just stay up after putting them back to bed. i consider those mornings "bonus days," as it buys me a couple extra hours to catch up on things.
kofuzi wow mate you live on less than 6 hours sleep a night.... hats off to you!
You are actually losing sleep by making RUclips videos. How do you motivate yourself? What's the end game? Just curious because I started a channel a few years ago and just couldn't keep up after having two kids.
The running and the RUclips videos are intertwined at this point. I'm not all that interested in the one without the other. I need the creative outlet. Getting to make RUclips videos is the endgame.
In terms of keeping up, it is a matter of ruthlessly cutting out everything that is non-essential.
kofuzi That's great you have found your passion. Keep it up! I just picked up a pair of Epic Reacts today and took them out on a 5K run. So far feels plusher than my Lunar Epics.
Glad that you enjoy!
Does your wife get up with you or do you have to tiptoe around the house that early in the morning? I seem to always wake my wife up when I try running early in the morning!
Tyler Moore same for me! Our stairs are so creaky, and I feel awful when I realize I forgot to grab something upstairs!
I'm the only one up that early. Fortunately, my wife is a deep sleeper. I try to set out everything I'll need in the morning, but I always forget something and have to go back in to the bedroom a couple times.
This is the story of the running ninja, in my case I have to be stealthy because if my two-year-old son wakes up, it's all hell break loose!
My wife would lose her shit if I get up before 5:00 (light sleeper and not a morning person). Then again I do most of my running on a treadmill in our basement and with a first floor master bedroom (kids are on the 2nd floor) she's unto happy. First morning run I was greeted by her coming down stairs with a look and a "are you shitting me?" comment. lol
I feel like there are worse things that husbands can be doing with their time. But can you go outside to run in the morning?
Bed time?
9 or 10. sometimes, I try and sneak off to bed before my kids
Static Stretching = injury
For me 3am isn’t even morning. Anything before 5-6 is inhuman. I kinda feel guilty in some way that you do all this. Please be lesser. Thank you
Working on it
