Groot takes on the world of music!! Had to jog my memory with a handful of these. I'm quite surprised that in 2000 there wasn't a single hip hop entry in the top 20, but I guess those will pop up in the years to come. Quite a sleepy year overall if you ask me. Of the artists in this list that had longer careers, Pink stands out a lot as she completely ditched the R&B stuff she entered the scene with and went on to make much better pop all throughout the 2010s. Try Again and Say My Name would be my favourites from this list EDIT : Out of curiosity I took a look at 1999's list and there are SO MANY BIGGER HITS! If you feel like squeezing in an extra list you should definitely do that one!
World of music = American world of music? hahah I probably won't get to talk about many non-English songs in these videos but I get what you mean haha! Trust me... the hip hop will come... and there will be LOTS of it! In my head, I always thought of 2000 as a strong year for music but perhaps most of what I love didn't chart so highly... 1999 is of course an incredible year, however! Might have to return to that one in the future hahah
Hi Groot, glad you’re doing these series of videos. Don’t forget that this month we got Albania’s NF so hopefully you’ll have time to check those songs as well.
So excited about this series, i always wanted to know more of your judgement and taste in the mainstream industry, outside of ESC! Not a fan of the early noughties as a period of music trends, except for Santana's songs and Vertical Horizon's track i don't think i would ever want to revisit anything from this top-20. Even the No1 seems so uninteresting to me. What struck me most though, to put into an ESC context, is that this kind of mellow pop ballads seems like it was the generic recipe in Eurovision until late 00s. I feel like a lot of countries tried this type of songs over and over for many years after it had been charted in the US, which proves how outdated the contest was back then compared to the world trends. I'm so looking forward to the late 00s tops!
I've been really looking forward to making a series like this too! However, I never realised that the Billboard charts may not always align with my preferered choices from the years hahah!
Sorry but personally for me "Sisqo - Thong song" is criminally underrated! That song for me is such a jam, I love it! I would put Sisqo at the A tier!😁🤩
Ok, I'm so interested in this. I spot a lot of bangers here. Let's see if you will trash my favorites. I guess I should mention the songs I'm familiar with. Christina Aguilera - What a Girl Wants, what a girl needs - is a banger. And I'm glad you said you like Christina because she's one of my favorite singers. And no you won't see more of her songs, they weren't chart-toppers sadly. I recommend her song called "Save Me from Myself" It has a really nice production and honestly the entire Back to Basics album is great. Madonna - Music - I personally do enjoy Music, but I guess it's not your cup of tea. 😆 P!nk - There You Go - ah yes, her R&B era, I'm an R&B fan, so I like this one too. Destiny's Child - Jumpin' Jumpin' - I'm starting to question my taste since you absolutely dislike all of my favorites haha. I do acknowledge that the production of this one is very poor, but it's still quite catchy IMHO. Aaliyah - Try Again - I knew you would like this one because it was produced by Timbaland, one of my favorites. Toni Braxton - He Wasn't Man Enough - is a banger. Oh no, you hate it. Well, I see it's gonna be a theme haha.😂 Destiny's Child - Say My Name - is another banger, you have to like this one. Again R&B fan, so it's up my alley. Santana & The Project G&B - Maria Maria - another banger. While some of the songs on this list aged, this one still sounds great. Santana & Rob Thomas - Smooth - same with this one. Overall it's a great list of songs. You know what I was thinking, do you remember the medley "Sweden, 42 Years In Music In 4 Minutes" from ESC 2016? You should rank those songs, would be a fun watch. And if you need I have made a Spotify playlist with all the songs.
Happy to hear that! I'm looking forward to reading all your comments! Regarding Christina, Genie in a Bottle is of course on the 99 list and that one is among my favourites! We'll see if I ever go back the years as well to talk about it haha! I see a pattern regarding the kind of music you've grown up with... not really in sync with my alt-rock background of blasting Kryptonite over and over again in my younger years hahah! Your idea about the Sweden medley is absolutely a neat one I should consider for the future! However, at the moment, full focus is on this series and getting together the final few watchalongs haha! :)
@@groot1421 you know what's interesting despite us having completely opposite tastes in music there are a lot of songs from both sides and beyond that we can both appreciate and agree on, and I think that's neat. ☺
I'm definitely going to be tuning in to your channel to check out your Billboard Top 20 tier list. I'm super curious to hear your thoughts on other famous artists. The ones I'm looking forward to the most are Carrie Underwood, Jordin Sparks, Kelly Clarkson, Evanescence and OMI.
Thinking back to 2000, my taste was so different than that reflected here! I was 17 so I was in my pop punk and Britpop phase! My five favourites from this list: 1. Lonestar- Amazed 2. Destiny's Child- Say My Name 3. Santana and Rob Thomas- Smooth 4. Aaliyah- Try Again 5. Toni Braxton- He Wasn't Man Enough And the absolute worst (her worst ever imo): 20. Madonna- Music
I would've loved some britpop on these lists but sadly I don't think there will be any... A nice group of songs there among your favourites and we certainly agree on the worst. Please keep sharing your thoughts going forward! :)
I enjoyed this video. However, American mainstream tastes are odd (as recent events confirmed) and so far away from mine that unsurprisingly I only knew five of them.
Guess I have to give it another listen hahah Her music hasn't really been up my alley from what I've listened to... may just be one of those rare ones where we're not in sync? haha
It is quite telling that the overall list is around D tier. In general Billboard top N is pretty uninteresting imo. And very American. Breathe is more like Snore…
Nice video! I have to admit, I still love listening to Texas and Savage Garden-they're probably my favorite artists from that era.
I have quite a few songs by Savage Garden I still regularly listen to as well! Just not the one from this year's list haha

Of course!
I'll try my best to fit everything in. December will be busy busy! :)

This is great! I feel really old, right now, because I was only 14 at that time, a lot of these songs seem unremarkable to be honest.
“Let me know if you want me to continue this series, regardless of what you say, I will”

I do understand why it's a banger, just not for me haha

I'm sure all of them will appear and I will have various thoughts on them, hah!
Maria Maria is the only S tier here for me

Yeah, I don't think the American mainstream and the Eurovision fandom has a lot in common haha!
Cool video idea! But, I love the Janet Jackson song, sorry!
It might even be my favourite one here.
Guess I have to give it another listen hahah
Her music hasn't really been up my alley from what I've listened to... may just be one of those rare ones where we're not in sync? haha
@@groot1421 I just checked out your 2001 video and alas, it definitely looks we won't be having too many Janet listen-alongs together in future. 😅
Separate headphones! Mine will be blasting Eminem and Nickelback
