My favorite song of 2024 has to be 'Broken Man' by St. Vincent. Though, I have to admit, 'Espresso' and 'Greedy' somehow made it into my top 5 on Spotify-guess I like them more than I thought! Also 'Guess' by Charli XCX and Billie Eilish is so much fun to listen to!
My opinions on the songs I know from the 2024 Top 20 on Billboard: Paint The Town Red: her flow is solid but damn that instrumental and progression is so monotone. It is a high E-tier for me. Please Please Please: a very nice summery bop with good vocals and cute instrumental. It is a solid B-tier for me. Birds of a Feather: Billie is great here and the melody is quite pretty and the instrumental is just very pretty. It is a high B-tier for me. Greedy: annoying vocals but it has a fun instrumental and vibe and I don’t mind it at all. It is a low B-tier for me. Stick Season: great lyrics and a grounded instrumental that highlights the great vocals though it is not necessarily my thing. It is a low B-tier for me. Too Sweet: great vocals and a really fun vibe in the instrumental with really contrasting lyrics that I really enjoy. But the song does lack punch and progression to me. It is a strong B-tier. Million Dollar Baby: the hook is annoying but I do love the vibe of the beat and the lyrics are fine. It also doesn’t progress a buy I don’t mind because the beat is really fun but yeah the production is slightly annoying. It is a solid C-tier. (Note: this song has the same title as the Best Picture winner from 2004 which is probably an S-tier movie for me. A really sad movie and a dynamic watch. I’d 100% recommend it. So weird that a hit song has the same title as something as niche as a Best Picture winner). Espresso: just an incredibly fun and cute summer bop. It is just such a fun listen and I think it is quite a solid A-tier. Not Like Us: this is a cultural touchstone and I love the lyrics and the beat is just so intense and really highlights Kendrick’s greatness. But it isn’t really my thing and diss tracks really just show that for me though Drake deserved it tbf. It is a high C-tier for me. Lovin’ On Me: just so vanilla and boring and the lyrical schtick for him has just become so boring. It is a low E-tier. Beautiful Things: I don’t get why this is so overhated by RUclips. I love the intensity of the chorus and his vocals are great. I love the lyrics but the verse ms don’t entirely work for me making it a low A-tier for me. A Bar Song (Tipsy): I love the use of the sample and it just gives the song a great drive and vibe that flows so well with the lyrics and vocals. I think it is a high B-tier Lose Control: amazing vocals and great lyrics. The vibe is quite pedestrian but it is a really nice foot-tapper. I think this is a solid B-tier mostly for the vocals. This year is very strong. Not many amazing ones but overall it is really strong for me, based on what I’ve heard. A lot of very enjoyable songs at the top of the charts. I also feel like a lot of these will also grow on me as well. Thanks for this series. I really enjoyed it. Next year you should do a series like this but for 1977-1999 + 2025. There are so many good songs in that period that are just waiting to be discovered and I think you’d enjoy it.
Comtemporary male singers are all about religious imagery and self-pity. Meanwhile Eilish, Roan & Carpenter know who they are and are so much more witty and sophisticated. Your S tiers are spot on. (Love the headwear, BTW) Great series overall. Congratulations. 👍
Anti hero was the only song of any note. Not her best but decent. As for the number one, was that even a song? A tired string of redneck clichés and a whiney boring voice.
I like Sabrina Carpenter more than I thought I would. Espresso doesn't do anything for me but I like both Please Please Please and Feather. My favorite pop song of 2024 is easily Good, Luck Babe. My favorite song overall is probably Death & Romance by Magdalena Bay.
God Jul, min kära! I hope you had a great time with your family!
Merry Christmas Groot!!:) wishing you incredible holidays❤ Edit: so so happy you put Birds of a feather and Good luck, babe in the S tier, 1000% the standouts of the top 20, have been addicted to both songs for quite some time they're absolute bangers
Merry Christmas Groot!! Thank God ''Die With a Smile'' made history on Spotify, cause i wouldn't be able to live in a world where such a masterpiece went relatively unnoticed. Easily my favourite song ever to go mainstream after Crazy in 2006, i actually think it's one of the best songs of the century, so incredibly crafted and blessed by two legends of the game in their absolutely best. I fell in love since the first listen and i will always love it. That said, my favourite hit-song from this list was definitely Billie's Birds of a Feather. Classic tune really, it will live for ages both in the US and Europe. So, here's my Top-25 of the century from all these Top-20s you ranked: 1. Crazy - Gnarls Barkley (probably one of my 3-4 favourite songs ever) 2. Right Round - Flo Rida 3. Give me Everything - Pitbull 4. The Hills - The Weeknd 5. Heartless - Kanye West 6. Starboy - The Weeknd 7. Viva La Vida - Coldplay 8. Just can’t get enough - Black Eyed Peas 9. When I was your man - Bruno Mars 10. Get Lucky - Daft Punk ft. Pharell 11. Birds of a Feather - Billie Eilish 12. Thrift Shop - Macklemore 13. Everything I wanted - Billie Eilish 14. Closer - NeYo 15. You Found Me - The Fray 16. Grenade - Bruno Mars 17. Airplanes - B.o.B ft. Hayley 18. We Found Love - Rihanna 19. My Immortal - Evanescence 20. In The End - Linkin Park 21. Mask Off - Future 22. This Love - Maroon 5 23. I Knew You Were Trouble - Taylor Swift 24. Somebody that I used to know - Gotye 25. Stay - Rihanna Narrowly out: Just Give me A Reason, The Box, XO Tour Life, Locked out of heaven.
My opinions on the songs I know of the Billboard Top 20: Flowers: very meh song. Great vocals, lyrics and attitude but damn that instrumental is so boring and flat which makes the song a strong C-tier. Kill Bill: I dislike the lyrics but I get that they take inspiration from the titular movie but they just feel unrealistic and over dramatic. Though Sza sells it and the instrumental vibe is very nice and it is so well-produced. This is a low C-tier. Boy’s A Liar (Pt. 2): the hook is so annoying and the instrumentals are boring and flat. The artist do fit it though which makes it a solid D-tier. I’m Good: damn this sucks. A terrible interpolation, nothing vocals, head-ache-inducing production and just an easy F-tier for me. Unholy: I love the dramatics of the lyrics and the production is so massive and clean for me. The artists also fit it and have good chemistry. I think it is a solid B-tier for me, very overhated for me. Cruel Summer: catchy hook and a great vocals but it doesn’t have a lot of progression to it though it is a very solid listen. A C-tier for me. Fast Car: Luke Combs has a great voice here and reworks Tracy Chapman quite serviceably, bringing it to a new generation. But with that, it misses a lot of the emotion the original had. It is a low B-tier for me, just for the new version having all the lyrical mastery. He has a much better song from Twisters (a film this year) called No Love In Oklahoma and it is just a punchy rocker that has the vocals and lyrics that really capture the desperation and Terra of being in a tornado. You Proof: the instrumental sucks and has no authenticity, the hook is annoying and Morgan just has on presence here. It is decently produced though. It is a solid E-tier for me. Die For You: this remix is just so boring and there is no chemistry between them at all and on a lazy beat it just doesn’t work at all. The vocals by themselves are good though. It is a solid E-tier for me. Rich Flex: no energy and bad rapping with bad lyrics. This is an easy F-tier for me. Calm Down: Selena works here for once and adds to the chill and mellow vibe that Rema sets out and they have great chemistry. The hook is a little annoying but I love the vibe of the instrumental that is monotone. It is a strong C-tier for me. Creepin: such a boring song and a really lazy sample that I don’t like though the artists add enough to it. I think this is a strong E-tier. Anti-Hero: the lyrics are very emotional and Taylor performs it well but the instrumental is just so flat and boring making it hard for me to listen to for 3 minutes. It is a solid D-tier though because of Taylor being so honest with the lyrics and the vocals. Last Night: the chorus is so repetitive, Morgan adds nothing to it with lyrics and vocals and the instrumental is really smooth but doesn’t progress enough. It is a low D-tier for me. Something In The Orange: god the lyrics really hit deep with the symbolic meaning that is pushed with his intense vocals and the somber, scaled-back instrumental that just punches you in the gut and gives me chills. It is a strong A-tier for me. Rock In A Hard Place: the lyrics are really not treading new ground but the way it is approached with the rhyming is quite interesting and his interesting voice really makes the song work for me with its otherwise unremarkable but pleasant waltzy feel it creates which I enjoy. It is a solid B-tier. He also had a song in Twisters which is called Hell Or High Water which captures the same feeling as Luke Comb’s one but has a great ambiance and energy and solid vocals that is a good listen. Very anonymous year for me. Lots of low tiers but a few highlights that make this year slightly notable but yeah it is so overly dire with so many songs that have nothing to them. For some reason a country song is on top but yeah it is all from the artist and the lyrics and RIAHP is very enjoyable with the unique writing approach to the generic content and his great voice.
Merry Christmas, Santa Groot! Bangers: Taylor Swift & Post Malone - Fortnight Doja Cat - Paint the Town Red (you really don't seem to like her, haha!) Chappell Roan - Good Luck, Babe! (initially, I wasn't fond of Chappell, but I grew to love her music) Hozier - Too Sweet Sabrina Carpenter - Espresso (definitely one of my favorites this year; it’s so catchy!) Teddy Swims - Lose Control (I still remember his song "The Door" from your Grooty picks!) I'm sad this is over. I had such a fantastic time exploring these songs with you every morning! So many songs were remembered and rediscovered. I truly admire your commitment to what you do, your passion, and your genuine love for music. Please keep being yourself! Cheers to another year of amazing music in 2025! Oh, and my top two songs this year were "From The Start" by Laufey and "Samsara" by Anyma and Sevdaliza (ironically both came out in 2023 I don't know what that says about 2024 haha)
Merry Christmas Groot to you and your family! Thank you for creating such a lovely, toxicity free and friendly community. ☺️
Funny to see swifties angry with Post Malone and Morgan collab, just a couple weeks after Fortnight release 😂😂😂
Congratulations on finishing up the entire tier lists from 2000 to 2024, Groot. I have enjoyed every single video of it, and I'm still looking forward to more of your tier list videos in the future. You have a wonderful Merry Christmas, Groot. :)
Merry Christmas Groot! Wish all the best for you. Well, finally in the top charts of this year, particularly a good year in the mainstream with great surprises for rising pop divas like Charli, Sabrina or Chapell, and unexpected tracks hitting the charts (A Bar Song, Not Like Us), so let me start with the positives: Chappell Roan, what a great discovery, loving her music and Good Luck Babe! is just gorgeous, BOAF is a really great song whit beautiful lyrics and vibes, Espresso is just so fun and catchy along with PPP who has a great instrumental, Not Like Us is just a jam, i can see why is not you cup of tea but seeing a diss track hit the charts and get a world praise like this is getting is the proof why Kendrick is a rap genius, Like That i personally would put much higher just for the stricking instrumental and a great featuring with all rappers shining, Saturn is also great, Paint The Town Red i must say i'm shocked you put in E cuz i think is just excelent produced and has a great message behind and Agora Hills is also a cool track. And for the negatives for me we get the Benson Boone track that i just find so generic and the vocal performance so over-dramatic that gets on my nerves hearing it everywhere, Greedy is just a bland generic pop tune that is too over produced for my ears, the Hozier one also is not that good for me personally along with Teddy Swims one and that's it i guess, such a surprising and diverse year for mainstream don't you think? 😂
you have a albanian viewer here i didn't now you streaming it , love the reaction
Lovely! Thank you for the comment! :)
If 2011 was a lousy year, 2023 is BORING. And the tiers show it. This year is hard to get to. I don´t particularly love any of this songs, but Kill Bill is good.
A lot of old related songs here: boadicea 1987 creepin sample fast car 1988 cover blue 1999 new lyrics version i don't wanna know 2004 remake creepin when i was your man 2013 lyrics inspiration die for you 2017 from starboy album (blame TikTok) cruel summer 2019 from lover album (blame TikTok) PS: cruel summer between two Morgan songs 😅 I've never seen an artist that swifties hated more 😂
2017 was an okay year, in my opinion. Not be the best, not the worst. I wouldn’t place any songs in the S-tier on my list, but some songs are really close. My favourite song on the list is probably ”Believer”. I really don’t care what anybody else think of this song. I just love the drum beat, the melodies are extremely catchy and the vocal performance really lifts the song overall, but especially the chorus, to new heights. An A-tier for sure. ”Say you won’t let go” would also be in the A-tier. I really enjoy the minimalistic singer-songwriter approach, James voice is really beautiful and it really sounds like the lyrics are very personal to him, which is a plus. It’s not a song that I’ve been listening that much to and I think there are better songs in the same kind of genre, I think at least one of them will be covered in the 2018 video, but ”Say you won’t let go” is still a very enjoyable listen to me. ”Starboy” would also be a clear A-tier for me. The production is awesome, the chorus is very catchy and memorable and The Weekend’s voice really fits this kind of instrumental, in my opinion. I don’t have that much more to say honestly. Just a great pop track all together. ”Something just like this” would be the last song in my A-tier. There’s just something about the sounds design here that just clicks with me. It feels kind of dreamy in a way. Chris Martin does a great job vocally, the drop is melodically very memorable and the song is overall very well produced. ”24K magic” would be the only song in my B-tier. To me it’s a song that simply does everything right. Bruno’s vocal performance is great, as always, the chorus is catchy and the song’s production is great too. Nothing I listen to that much, but still a great song. I would place ”Shape of you” in the C-tier. Back in 2017 I didn’t like this song at all, mostly because it got all the fame that I think ”Castle on the hill” would’ve deserved (They were released on the same day). However, I’ve started to like the song more and more during recent years and while I still think ”Castle on the hill” is a far more superior song I can see why ”Shape of you” became such a hit. It’s well produced, catchy and very sing along friendly. A good song overall, in my opinion.
I like Rich Flex, but I already knew it’s exactly the type of song you hate and was going right into the F tier!
Ok I am really happy that you put Kill Bill so high but I am so sad that you put the David Guetta & Bebe Rexba - I'm Blue banger at F tier as it is amazing for me.
I only like Miley Cyrus' Flowers in that year. The rest I wouldn't bother listening to again. Also, I kept playing your review on I'm Good (Blue) on a repeat, simply because of the way you were roasting it.😂
My opinions on the Top 20 of 2022 on Billboard: Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God): I love this song. The artistry, the ambience and epicness of the soundstage, her hypnotic vocals and delivery and the poetically haunting lyrics. This is perfection, easily an S-tier that shouldn't even be here. Woman: a very boring beat with equally so vocals but a decent vibe and production and a slightly annoying hook that makes it a low E-tier. Need to Know: same as woman for me, so a low E-tier. Both are very anonymous and boring to me. abcdefu: cringe lyrics and interpolation, an annoying hook, terrible vocals, headache-inducing production and instrumental and an easy F-tier. INDUSTRY BABY: the beat is amazing as is the production, Lil Nas X is just amazing on this and Jack Harlow works fine here. His vibe really works as a feature rather than a song on his own I think. I do love the catchiness of the hook and the horns of the chorus just add a lot of punch that I love. This is a strong B-tier. Enemy: amazing vibe and great hook. I love the way it is produced and the way it sounds. The hook is well-sung but the rapping is very forgettable. This is a strong B-tier as a result. I get your view on this however as I feel that the reasons I love it might be why you hate it. That's What I Want: I love the lyrics and he really works on this with his artistry in the production and instrumental. It is a strong B-tier on the border of A-tier for me. About Damn Time: just a lazy and boring song that is somewhat catchy and packed with the attitude that just ultimately reminds me of great and superior music from the 80s and 70s which this is obviously doing making it a strong E-tier. Cold Heart (Pnau Remix): this is a good example of interpolation in modern pop music. It mixes two Elton songs very well together with a pleasant hook and good vocals from both Dua and Elton that is well-produced and vibey. It is a solid B-tier for me. Ghost: I like the vibe of this while it does have a boring lack of evolution to it and Justin sings well on it with solid lyrics as well. This is a low B-tier for me. Big Energy: lazy sample and terrible attitude and lyrics with lazy flows that make me skip it after 30 seconds. Easy F-tier, not lower than Gayle though. First Class: such a lazy hook but the attitude that Jack Harlow has on it somewhat works on it. The instrumental is characteristically flat and plastic for hip-hop. This is a solid E-tier for me. Shivers: great hook and a nice instrumental and production and vocals. But it just feels a little boring and hollow for me. It is a strong C-tier for me. Easy On Me: I love her voice and the lyrics are very earnest but damn the piano backing just doesn't have enough drive to overly hook me. It is a solid C-tier for me. As it Was: I love this 80s reference and I love the world this song puts me in it is just captivating produced with the punchy drumbeats and synths that just glitter through the soundstage with his great vocals. I love it. It is a strong A-tier for me. This is a good year for me. some songs really suck or are bad and lazy but many of them are really solid, at least from what I know. But a lot of the songs I haven't bothered to hear from this year definitely would bring it down for me but at this point, this is an enjoyable year for me.
Maybe the year we most agree was this one, love the Billie appreciation, but i disagree with The box (great song) and Dua (how can you not vibing with this groove? 😂), a awful year by the obvious events that we have faced but great year for memorable songs for sure
Ok Groot that was not what i expect from you... 😂 but let's start with the good ones: Kate Bush absolutely deserved in S, good placements for Adele Harry and Lil Nas X here too, but i kinda understand that you not that familiar with the reggateon scene by those thoughts on Bad Bunny, it was definetly his year and i love how he brings the quality in production that this genre needed, a well deserved global recognition for this kinda of music and for Puerto Rico. I must say that this Jack Harlow song (as long the album) is just painfully bad and a joke for the rap community overall so i'm surprised it was in A, i just don't know why you can't see how bland and generic that Ed Sheeran's songs are but ok and Ghost for me is a little too high but overall that's my disagreements personally (with all respect on your toughts of course)
Unfortunately not a very good year for mainstream music, but some interesting artists ascension (Sza, Olivia, PinkPantheress) i personally would put both Snooze and Kill Bill in A along with Boys a Liar Pt.2 (what a fun and cute track) Not a fan of Unholy i think that's a little too much and the Drake drack is not the worst one of the album for sure, and Anti-Hero i just find so boring just as Midnight was 😅
I never really got into Stranger Things back in the day, but I do have to thank the show for putting people like Kate Bush and Metallica into the mainstream and the billboard charts. Metallica's output in the 80's was honestly incredible and it's nice to see it reach more generations. But along with that, we have Kate Bush and "Running Up That Hill", the song and artist actually mentioned in the video. The fact that a song this old and like this could chart this high just shows how much it was able to resonate with modern audiences. And it resonated with some many people for a good reason. "Running Up That Hill" is one of my absolute favorite songs of all time and easily my favorite song included in this series and it's not even close. Everything about just clicks so perfectly well like the atmospheric verses that feel build so well into the chorus. The constant energy present in the song just provides so much engagement for the listener. The hauntingly beautiful backing vocals just adding to the atmospheric and surreal feel to it all. Kate's incredibly distinct vocals just help to create her world in the form of music. The track is around 5 minutes and not single second is wasted in it and honestly, it could last way longer and I would enjoy it all the same. The whole album the song comes from, "Hounds Of Love", is one of my favorites from the 80's and possibly of all time. The first half is stunning pop tunes that feel so 80's yet so fresh and amazing. The second is where Kate really wants you to understand and join her world with "The 9th Wave" with incredibly abstract yet engaging works that it's almost impossible not to get dragged into this world the she has created. Kate's influence on art pop as a genre is crazy as well pioneering for such works that definitely put off critics at the time to later get the reappraisal it deserved, thinking of "The Dreaming" in particular. To think, we probably wouldn't have gotten Björk if we didn't have Kate Bush doing her thing in the 80's. If you couldn't tell, I quite like Kate Bush as an artist. She's one of my favorites of all time and it makes me so happy to see her get all this positive attention in today's age. As for 2022, it ain't great to be honest. Lil Nas X kind of carries the list for me personally, both of his tracks this year provide a lot of enjoyment for me. Don't really care a whole lot about the rest of the list. Quite a lot of awful tracks on list but I don't have a hatred for them as much as other years as this was around the time I stopped looking at billboard music. Happy with that decision as I've gotten to know a ton more music and widen my interests. Like for example, an album called "Ants From Up There" released in 2022 and it's honestly incredible and definitely worth a listen. Kind of just writing about why Kate Bush is great and little bit about 2022, but any opportunity I get to speak about Kate and her work, I'll take it and run with it. Can't believe we're almost done with the series, it's been a wild ride to say the least. That'll be it from me for this video. And I just remembered my youtube name is the name you'll know me by backwards. Yeah, it's Densuke(Dens-ke) if maybe you didn't know lol.
Happy Holidays, everyone! 🥰 Bangers: Zach Bryan - Something in the Orange (This one is kinda nice, I hadn't heard it before. It's refreshing to find decent songs among this selection of songs) Sam Smith & Kim Petras - Unholy (ok but this one is an actual banger, so catchy) SZA - Snooze (her name is pronounced as "Sizza" I do enjoy myself some SZA, to me "Kill Bill" is her best track, but this one is good too) The Weeknd & Ariana Grande - Die for You Remix (This collaboration isn't as strong as their previous one, but still solid, I suppose.) Metro Boomin', The Weeknd & 21 Savage - Creepin' (I adore "Boadicea" by Enya so much that I instantly like any song sampling it.) SZA - Kill Bill (Oh, I didn't notice this song was listed! Haha, yes, this is my favorite SZA track.) Miley Cyrus - Flowers (An incredible song, very catchy, I love the sample from Bruno Mars' "When I Was Your Man," and no, I'm not tired of it yet.) My thoughts: My gym had Lane Moje playing once haha. Honestly, I'm surprised Chris Brown is still around considering his behavior. And Morgan Wallen just isn't my style. David Guetta, please stop ruining songs. Taylor Swift - Anti-hero (I honestly prefer Mal Retkoceri's "Antihero" more haha, but you are a Swiftie so I know you will love this 🤓 and you did! 😜) See you for the last one tomorrow!
afaik SZA is meant to be pronounced like Scissor
That's not true lol. It's more like "Sizza"
is that not how to pronounce Scissor
Such a good year for SZA, I find both Kill Bill and Snooze to be amazing
A great night was had by all. Groot has really created a great community within the fanbase. No toxicity. All about the music.
Kate Bush is a true original. Someone who would never get a record deal in these times. - Meanwhile I did not even recognise the song from One Direction's eye candy. I found it to be too boring to concentrate on, I'm afraid.
My aunt asked me... 💃🤣
❤
Banger: Kate Bush - Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God) (I can't believe you haven't watched Stranger Things, such a good show, the 4th Season was even partially filmed in my hometown lol) Bad Bunny - Tití Me Preguntó (I don't really like Bad Bunny or his vocal approach, but this one just goes hard. Pregunto to to to is irritating for you, but Ta ta ta ta ta in Zari wasn't irritating😛) Doja Cat - Woman (oof, we're gonna be disagreeing a lot it seems) Lil Nas X & Jack Harlow - INDUSTRY BABY Lizzo - About Damn Time Latto - Big Energy (sad face, but I get it haha, I do like it, maybe it helps that I don't pay attention to the lyrics) Ed Sheeran - Shivers Adele - Easy On Me It's funny how you became a bigger pop music fan this year than I am haha.
Silk Sonic 🔥
Arcane is my favorite tv-show of all time and I will not tolerate this Enemy slander!! 😂 (I do agree it was not made for billboard, but it does make a bänger intro song) Also I remember the song playing on the radio the last time I was getting my teeth drilled at a dentist and I tried so hard not to laugh at the "OH THE MISERY" lyrics lmao 😭
It's honestly so funny how both the A and F-tiers are stacked.
Absolute shame that Diamonds by Rihanna didn't hit the top 20 for this year or 2013, absolute S tier song in my opinion
Surprised you didn't get into Deja Vu, is such a light tune with gives a good nostalgic vibe, i'm not that crazy for positions personally but is a ok song, Heat Waves in other hand i just find so monotonous and the Ed Sheeran one... Is just another song in his collection of bad tracks
SZA is pronounced like “sizza” :)
Bangers: Ariana Grande, Doja Cat & Megan Thee Stallion - 34+35 Remix (You misspelled Stallion. I suspect there will be an increasing number of explicit sexual songs in the future, haha. Honestly, I'm surprised WAP didn't make this list.) Ed Sheeran - Bad Habits Ariana Grande - positions Lil Nas X - MONTERO (Call Me By Your Name) (It's super catchy!) Silk Sonic - Leave the Door Open (when will Bruno Mars stop making bangers?) Doja Cat & SZA - Kiss Me More ( like both Doja and SZA so it's a no-brainer) The Weeknd & Ariana Grande - Save Your Tears (I prefer The Weeknd's solo version but I guess this one is fine) Dua Lipa & DaBaby - Levitating Some of these songs really irritate me. I can’t stand the over-processed vocals. Also, I'm not really a fan of Olivia Rodrigo, "Vampire" is the only song of hers I enjoy. Honestly, she's just less talented Taylor Swift. The same goes for BTS, maybe if I were a teenage girl I’d appreciate them more, but they're just not for me. (We can probably expect some BTS fans to come after us now, it's been nice knowing you, haha!)
Levitating would’ve been a perfect Eurovision song
Is it my imagination or are these videos getting progressively longer? - Olivia Rodrigo "Challenging the mainstream" (!) (?) The whole point is that she is the personification of sanitised pop. The contemporary music industry manufacture and groom artists who will not throw TVs out hotel windows or do drugs and then you bolt on a musical style from an era when acts did exactly that, to give an ersatz impression of edginess. None of the songs in this list have an original spark or artistic purity about them. They are made by committee and produced into the ground. - Meanwhile Glass Animals were only allowed into the party because they came up with something suitably anaemic.
I have kind of a nostalgic connection to 2016 as a music year. I listened to a lot of the songs on the list back then, and still listen to some of the songs today. My absolute favourite on the list has to be ”Cake by the ocean”. It’s simply three minutes and 40 seconds of pure fun. Instrumentally the song is very playfully arranged which I really enjoy and to say that the chorus is catchy is an understatement. An easy top of A-tier for me. I would place ”Stressed out” in A-tier for sure, very close to ”Cake by the ocean”. I really like the mood this song sets from the first note. The singers flow in the verse is great and the chorus melody is incerdibly memorable. I also LOVE the lyrics and the story telling aspect of the song. I feel like I have to mention the outro too. I don’t know what it is about it, but I love it. A perfect way to end the song, in my opinion. I can pretty much say the exact same things about ”7 years”. I love the mood it sets from the very start and lyrically this song really hits. The story telling is very impressive, in my opinion, and I really love just sitting down, closing my eyes and listening to this song. Another A-tier for me. ”Can’t stop the feeling” isn’t really a song I listen to that much, mostly because of the fact that the radio played it so much, but I can’t deny that it got played so much for a reason. Just like with ”Cake by the ocean” this song feels like the definition of happiness and joy. When the intro starts I immediately start tapping along with my foot. When the chorus hits I just can’t help singing along. It’s really that catchy. Justin Timberlake feels like the perfect artist for this song too. Vocally I think he does a great job. I would place this song in the B-tier. ”Hello” would join it in the B-tier. Adele once again delivers great vocals and there is no doubt about the fact that the song is well written. It became a hit for a reason, just like with ”Can’t stop the feeling”. However, I agree with what you said. I don’t feel that it hits as hard as for example ”Rolling in the deep” and ”Set fire to the rain”. If we talk about ballads by Adele I much prefer ”Someone like you”. I would still place ”Hello” in the B-tier though. It’s far from a bad song. I would also place both of Justin Bieber’s songs in the B-tier. I didn’t listen that much to Justin Bieber’s music before 2015/2016, but when he released ”Purpose” I changed my mind. The album overall is well produced, in my opinion, and I do think that both ”Sorry” and ”Love yourself” are great songs, even though my favourite song from the album is ”What do you mean?”. What I enjoy most about ”Sorry” is probably the melodic writing. I honestly don’t know why, but I get so much enjoyment just listening to the melodies. Instrumentally I think the song is ok. It’s overall well produced, but the ”drop” after the chorus becomes kind of annoying after a while, in my opinion, and that’s mainly what holds it back from the A-tier. ”Love yourself” kind of have the same strengths and weaknesses. Melodically I really enjoy the song and I also like the minimalistic arrangement. I get what you’re saying about the guitar playing, but personally I don’t really mind it. For me the instrumental part after the chorus is yet again what holds the song back from the A-tier. I don’t necessarily think there’s anything wrong about the melody itself. In this case it’s more about how it sounds. I wish they would’ve chosen a different instrument to play it. Overall though, the song will still be placed in B-tier by me.
I really like 90% of these songs.😃
My opinions on all the Top 20 songs of 2021: 34 +35 (remix): a really boring song with cringe lyrics. An E-tier song for me. Leave the Door Open: what a great throwback with a captivating progression and instrumental and powerful vocals. An easy A-tier for me. Astronaut in the Ocean: the lyrics are a bit weird but I love the beat and his vibe which makes it work enough for me. A solid B-tier for me. Butter: a cool song with a good beat and solid vocals but the pronunciation doesn't really work for me. A solid B-tier. Driver's License: the vocals are amazing and the lyrics are os personal. Kind of cheapened by the generic piano backing that lowers its impact along with it being so overplayed. Gives me vibes of Every Single Day by Felix Sandman from Melfest 2018 which does this vibe and approach much better. A solid B-tier. Without You: the hook is sung nicely but the rest of the song is not my thing vocally. I do love that it genuinely expresses its anger with no frills which I appreciate. I love the guitar strumming of the instrumental and the lyrics don't fully work. It is a solid D-tier for me. Peaches: what a cool production and vibe and a great vocal from all of them and the feature works well. I really enjoy it, a strong B-tier for me. Heat Waves: they are still genuine in their artistry and production with a great flow and a punchy beat with a great chorus that is so catchy. I love it, a strong B-tier for me. Bad Habits: a fun hook and a cool production with solid vocals. A high C-tier for me. Positions: quite boring but the beat is very nice and Ariana works fine on it. A solid C-tier for me. Deja Vu: the washed-out rocky vibe for this is very entrancing and her vocals are great here as are the lyrics. This is a strong B-tier for me. Stay: I love the beat of this song and The Kid Laroi and Justin Bieber work perfectly to provide enough contrast to slide over the beat in a fantastic way that gives the song enough drive. The instrumental is sort of flat though the chorus is catchy and really the instrumental is the weakest part of the song. It is a high B-ttier for me. Montero: the beat is so captivating and Lil Nas X really works his magic here and the lyrics are really interesting. This is a solid A-tier for me here. Kiss Me More: the beat is so fun and the duo really works here even if it doesn't evolve too much which makes it slightly boring. A solid B-tier for me. good 4 u: I love the rock instrumental here and her yearning in the vocals comes off as so earnest and I absolutely love it. It is a strong A-tier for me and is my favourite Olivia Rodrigo song by a mile. Mood: I love the back-and-forth between the two vocalists who have a lot of attitude and that guitar strumming is so fun but it does drone on for a bit too long. It is a solid B-tier for me. Save Your Tears: beautiful vibe and a great vocal interplay between The Weeknd and Ariana that perfectly work for this making me slip into a trance every time I listen to it but it is sort of a bit boring at points. It is a strong B-tier for me. Levitating: this is Dua's and Dababy's best song and they perfectly fit it with their combined energy, the beat is so good and it is so catchy. This is an S-tier for me 100%. This is a solid year with some standouts but with a lot of filler that doesn't do much for me.
My opinions on the Top 20 of one of the most eventful years in recent history on Billboard: Blinding Lights: this is a truly amazing 80s throwback that's just a fantastically produced and structured song that is so satisfying. This is a strong A-tier for me. Watermelon Sugar: the hook is very repetitive but I do like the approach of the lyrics and the vibe is really nice and relaxing and a pretty melody that is well-sung. I'd give this a strong C-tier. Roses (Imanbeck Remix): the beat is absolutely sick with a great production that is a bit annoying vocally which does ruin a lot of its appeal for me with its repetitiveness. This is a strong C-tier for me. everything i wanted: it is just so captivating and beautiful in itis instrumental and vocal approach that has so much pain, honesty and beauty in the lyrics as well. This is my favourite Billie Eilish song probably and just shows why Finneas is also a genius. This is an S-tier for me. Dance Monkey: this is so annoying in all of its parts. Why was this a hit? Because it's cute? Funny? It is none of that for me and it just frustrates me to no end. One of the worst pop songs since 2000 100%. And also a strong stain on or culture and as an Australian, I am sorry that we gave this to us. The clearest F-tier there ever was. Roxanne: such a catchy song with a cute production and vibe and a solid attitude. A strong C-tier for me. Say So: what a lush 80s tropical vibe with great lyrics, a catchy chorus and a pleasant melody that is just nice to sit with for 3 minutes. A solid B-tier for me. Savage: very monotone in the rapping and instrumental but the lyrics do work somewhat. I think this is a low D-tier for me. Someone You Loved: god his voice is amazing and the lyrics are so honest and intense with his vocal prowess. The piano is also touching and it is just so well-produced. I think this is an easy A-tier for me. Memories: god the melody is so derivative but sort of pretty and his vocals don't work at all and it ultimately is just very anonymous and boring. This is an easy E-tier for me. Adore You: the chorus is euphoric and catchy (I agree with you on Sign of the Times which is simply S-tier for me) and the instrumental is just so vibey and his vocals really work here making it a solid B-tier for me. Rockstar: the vibe is sort of cool and the rappers do work on this with the catchy chorus as well. But the vibe isn't my thing overall making it a strong C-tier for me. Don't Start Now: her attitude really works here with the 80s funk instrumental vibe that I really love and find charming. The chorus is a little repetitive though which does make it a strong B-tier for me. Circles: I love the vibe of this song as it really captures you in its trance and the lyrics are great as are his characteristic vocals. This is 100% my fave Post Malone song, a strong A-tier for me. This is a decent year in pop music with lots of solid picks with a few gems and a few that really don't work for me.
My opinions on the songs I know from the 2019 Top 20 Billboard charts: Bad Guy: what a sick song with amazing vibes and great characteristic vocals. I love it. It is a strong A-tier for me. Old Town Road: what a genius mix of rap and country with a great fitting feature by Billy Ray Cyrus and an amazing hook, a great intro to Lil Nas X. It is a strong A-tier for me. Shallow: Yes, this is overplayed, but it is a great song. The film uses amazing vocals and emotional lyrics, making it emotionally compelling and hard-hitting with amazing harmonies. It is a solid B-tier for me. Sunflower: what a genius bop with a great feature and great lyrics with a fantastic trance-inducing vibe. one of the best soundtrack songs that also works outside of the context of the film really well. A strong B-tier for me. Eastside: great vibe and a layered foot-tapping instrumental with great lyrics as well with great vocals. A solid B-tier for me. Talk: what a smooth bop and great vocals. It just really showcases why Khalid is so great and I love it. It is a strong B-tier for me because it doesn't evolve much from its core vibe. I Don't Care: a great duet and solid vocals. A fun concept that just approaches it with a laid-back groove that I really enjoy. A strong B-tier for me. Senorita: so incredibly cheesy but has great vocals and chemistry. But the lyrics and vibe make it very cheesy and almost cringy though the beat is quite pleasant. A solid C-tier for me. Dancing With A Stranger: a cool and chill vibe that is well-produced with solid vocals and good chemistry. A strong C-tier for me. Truth Hurts: cool attitude and a fun vibe but it is ultimately far away from my genre that doesn't work for me fully. A low C-tier for me. Sicko Mode: what a cool vibe and the track really takes you on a captivating and intense journey with the amazing beat that just hits so hard. A solid A-tier for me. thank u, next: a very annoying hook and gossipy lyrics that I just find tiring and annoying and her snarky attitude doesn't work at all for me. A weak E-tier for me because I don't mind the vibe it creates. High Hopes: what an epic song with the horns catchy chorus and a satisfying progression. The hook is a bit annoying and Brendan Urie's vocal vibe doesn't really fully work here and it does nothing new or unique in a great way. I think it is a high C-tier. Sucker: I love the lyrical vibe of it and the instrumentals are fun. The chorus is also quite catchy. But yeah the vocal attitude can get a bit tiresome at points for me with their high falsetto that doesn't fully work for me. It is a solid B-tier for me. 7 Rings; I hate the pampered rich girl attitude of this song which is all that it does in its production, lyrics and vocals. I hate this though Ariana works on it but not in a good way. This is an easy F-tier for me. Happier: what a great song that really packs a lot of emotional genuinity into it which makes it really captivating. The lyrics hit hard and god it sounds so great and is produced amazingly. Marshmello really works his magic here and I love it. This is a strong A-tier for me. Without Me: Halsey's attitude is a little tiresome and the plodding vibe just makes me zone out. The lyrics are solid though and I like the genuinity of emotions. A solid C-tier for me. This is a great year for me with many amazing songs. Some songs don't work here for me but many of them just give me loads of nostalgia and I really enjoy this top 20.
Weak semi
I had a dream
