The Toyota GR Yaris arrived on the world stage and immediately became a hot topic of conversation. It soon became apparent that this car really was as good as Toyota claimed it to be, and so market watchers and keyboard warriors started focusing on price; is it really worth it, especially when new cars like the Golf 8 GTI are cheaper?
A comparison we've seen often on social media in South Africa has enthusiasts comparing the GR Yaris to the GTI, where we would like to state, quite emphatically, that they are very different cars built for very different purposes.
However, when the opportunity arose to put them head-to-head, along with the new GTI rival in the form BMW 128ti, we couldn't really turn that down.
And so, following on from our drag race series featuring these cars (links below), we'd like to present to you, our valued audience, a hot-lap shoot out between these three everyday heroes.

Ash looks so happy behind the wheel of the Yaris, what a great little car.
i got to be honest. having one as a daily car for 6 months and after 25k km it's still as much fun as in the first week after purchase :D Worth every penny

The only downfall of this show is the prehistoric timing equipment used.
Not only was the GR Yaris the fastest. It's also the best looking of the three.

So if you want nice interior and comfortable practical car then there are a few great choices but if you want a more focused hot hatch then the choice is clear

@@creatineenjoyer7345 yeah true. Have had many of them too. E36 325i dolphin was the most fun to drive...rear wheel drive six cylinders manual👌👌. But the thing is 95% of 1 series buyers buy it for the style and premium status. The tech and interior is first class and ride quality great. 1 series not a true hot hatch anymore🤣
Used bridgestone turanza t005,not designed for track…come on. the car comes out with pilot sport 4 as standard.

GR is unbeatable! Chassis, AWD, weight distribution ... I extremly enjoyed the time with it and I will definitly get this small beast

lol, the Yaris everyday would be the better, safer, more consistent drive.
It'll be more reliable and cheaper also. They're already making 800hp without changing gearbox or diffs, not even opening the engine, the golf would let you do any of that.

What did we learn? That the Cars sound guys have upped their game. Also, I expected the Yaris to be quite a bit faster than 2s.
2s is a massive gap over the standing lap. Over a 20 lap race that yaris would be over half a lap ahead.

Wow awesome race! I am disappointed in the performance of the Bridgestone Turanzas compared to the Hankooks on the Golf. But WOW the Yaris is fast!!
That's because the yaris I'm guessing it has michelin ps4 on it, if the golf and BMW has michelin ps4 on them, then the results would have been way closer for all 3 of them
@@mykchancy closer maybe, but still the golf and the bmw are fat and down on power, so why should they ever be faster round a track against a dedicated homologation special? The whole test was kinda unnecessary.

I have recently moved to England. Lots of those Yaris here.
Welcome to England. A guy in my town has one. Always nice to spot it out and about. I would get out of its way if it appeared in my 128ti rear view :-)
I think the UK got an allocation of 1,500 of these (from the 25,000 built). I’m super happy with mine. It’s a great daily driver (kids have grown up) and over bumpy UK B roads, not much can keep up with it.

It's a rally special. Not a track special. They doing a road version. Also the GR corolla is road biased. It's the same reason why WRX STIs aren't that fast on asphalt.
@@nazmo_za9654 yes I understand that , but I’ve seen the GR play with the GTi on asphalt on this very same channel and based on that video it was supposed to crush the times not just by 2secs.
It would be really interesting to know how the 128ti would perform on a new set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4 tyres. My wife's X3 has Turanzas! They are not a performance tyre by any stretch of the imagination. My 128ti has Pirelli P Zeros, they are ok, but I was disappointed not to get the Michelins after ticking the performance tyre option :-(
I believe the P zeros are better,they are a softer compound

Good vid, but wouldn't expect FWD cars to be up against the Yaris - be more suited up against the A35/M135 etc...but as an M135 owner I know the Yaris will still "win"

The smiles on Ash's face says it all. I may still get the Golf if I need a four door. The front wheel drive bimmer is not a 'real' bmw but for those who wants that badge which in turn has compromised the brand. Thank you Toyota for the GR. Please make a proper Supra n revive the Celica n MR2. The new 86 is a big improvement.

As you can see on 11:10, this guy doing something on stopwatch maybe continue the time so the results looking more competitive. Maybe the real GR Yaris time is 1 minute 10 second

Ja, look it's not that practical - but I can fit my large 29" mountain bike in the back (with front wheel removed). Of course the cf roof means no roof rails can be fitted. But I promise you it's worth it. The most fun car and astonishingly capable. Love it to pieces.

2s isn't all that much when its a standing start lap. A lot of that will have been from the launch. Thats the price you pay for a manual gearbox. Every change costs time and over a lap that adds up. I would still take the manual every time unless I was racing though. If you're racing you want every advantage you can get. If you're not go for the most fun.

it really depends on the track. the yaris is better at cornering and at lower speeds bc its high torque and awd and the type r is better in straights

Golf is fast, yaris has 4wd and gets a 1 second or 1.5 at start line
From my 2 track outings the Grrrrr can brake late hold good mid corner speed and out accelerate equally powered cars exiting corners...2 cars trying to exit corners at the same speed span behind me an M3 and Porsche Cayman...
Great hot hatch, loads of fun on twisty back roads pushing out of corners rotating behind you in sport mode is fabulous.
That is true. The 2 seconds are from the initial start. If they wanted to be fair they should have rolled into the race from same speed with all cars.

I think this is why Ash expected to Yaris to be a lot faster than 2sec over the Golf, you're right that 2sec is the advantage in the start. Ash appeared to be a lot faster in the corners, better exit speed and yet bo real advantage 🤔
For everyday driving the BMW and Golf will do it for me. A Toyota will always be a Toyota.

The BMW has Michelin Pilot Sport tyres available as a no cost option. Fit those and then try it against the Golf. I have no idea why BMW fit Bridgestone tyres unless the buyer ticks the Michelin option. I am surprised the commentary says both Golf and BMW have the same power, unless the specs are changed for South Africa. In the UK the Golf has 245bhp and the BMW 265! The Yaris is brilliant but a bit too small for me, whereas both Golf and BMW are practical enough.

Speakers. I have the 128ti and that's the fake sound it makes in Sport mode if you don't select it to be switched off from the touch screen. It sound ok, so I have left it on. I had a mk 7.5 GTI Performance before, and I switched the fake Sound Actor noise off using an OBDEleven device as it was just a horrid drone.
@@johnfranklin6394 Another 128ti owner here. Had my name down for a GR, test drove one finally back in April and couldn't wait to get out of it. Tested the 128ti later on the same day and had to be prised out of it. Bought that demo car on the spot, love it more every time I drive it. My GR turned up in September and I cancelled it. Horses for courses, but I loved the baby beemer and didn't love the Toyota.
@@maxharris4208 that’s really good to hear. I didn’t even consider the GR. I have 3 kids, one is 6’2”, so the relative practicality of the 128ti was a big consideration for me. Plus, I gave up on manuals years ago. I love using the paddle shifters on the 128ti, they really get the max performance out of the B48 engine.
@@johnfranklin6394 The practicality was less important to me, not least because we're both short arses and our 2 children are all grown up.....! We were all set to have both cars and for me to give up bikes, but at the 11th hour I bottled it. Ultimately, I wfh full time now and so we've no need for 2 cars and as I said, I liked driving the GR but I didn't love it. There's been massive hype on the Web and to me, it was hugely overrated. I adored our 128ti from the first time I saw it!!! I'm a bike man at heart and don't enjoy driving - but this is different. Everything about the BMW raises my heart rate - it's everything I could hope for in a car and I arrive at every destination disappointed that I've got to leave it. I NEVER thought I'd say that. And yes, I bought another bike BTW 🤣🤣 I so hope your 128ti brings you as much joy as ours John, great chatting with you 👍
