In this latest epic drag race, that we staged recently at the Aldo Scribante circuit outside Gqeberha, the latest Volkswagen Golf 8 GTI takes on the BMW 128ti over a quarter mile.
With the BMW now riding on a front wheel drive platform, these cars are more similar than ever. Both cars have 2.0-litre, 4-cyl turbo engines with almost identical power outputs, however the BMW is a touch lighter.
So, which one would take victory over 400m? Only one way to find out...

In Europe the difference will be even greater. The European 128ti comes as standard with more power and torque... at 195kw and 400nm.
I have the 128ti in the UK with 265ps and 400nm. It definitely feels quicker than the Golf GTI Performance DSG that I had for 3 years. That car had the same 245ps and 370nm of the new standard Golf GTI.

Guys good work. (next time swap drivers, as each driver has his own skills, maybe the results will change as the drivers are swapped, and also please do a 3 out of 3 always for drags etc, to get an avergae result.). Other than that, i have no complaints, may the channel grow and prosper🙏

They do multiple takes, the GTi does not take off well. Blame VW.

Hello again. I've checked. The BMW has 20 less horsepower in your country than it has just about everywhere else: normally 265bhp and 400nm torque. Strangely, the Golf is apparently unaltered. You like the Golf there. Most people outside of there like the BMW. Kudos, though.

GTI is a hype not a reality and only good to its owners until it meets its rivals
How did it get toasted? The GTI is faster as it won the rolling race not to mention it has less torque and weighs more than the bmw 🤷♂️

If you guys think one was faster than the other you need to watch the videos again. They are pretty even. One little slip of greasy hair gel fingers on your flappy paddle could mean a win or loss

High quality video. BMW is going to challenge a GTI is not ahealthy war for BMW a lot of rivals had come and go the GTI remains unshaken . Look at what happened to benz when they think they can challenge a Toyota hilux they failed miserably .it not about premium badges here it all about reputation and street cred and vrrphaa has a massive fan base here in southern Africa
But BMW has been doing hatchbacks for a while now although the formula has changed so I don't think they will have any problems competing
True a very competitive segment and GTi has been holding the title, for healthy market we need competition and thumps to Bmw for taking the challenge and so far the Ti has received positive reviews from car critics

I am not surprised with the result as there is no outright winner because th2 two are very similar in many ways like power, torque and weight. . . . .In fact big up to BMW for doing it right the first time not as apologetic as A250 Sport

I wonder what the result would be without traction control? I tend to turn it off when racing my Polo GTI since it just interferes too much; I can manage the throttle and boost in a way that gives my enough traction without bogging the car down. It's a vastly different car from these machines, of course, but I am curious if the results would be any different in this case.

You've got to know how to use the DSG from 1st to 2nd. Otherwise it's wheel spin.

In the next video my money is on the GR YARIS it has all the grip but it has a slight disadvantage of a manual gearbox so I'm looking forward

The 128ti has been detuned in South africa due to it being a hot weather country. In the UK the 128ti would have beaten it by miles.
Agreed. I am in the UK and have a 128ti that replaced my previous mk 7.5 Golf GTI Performance. The 128ti feels stronger thanks to its 265ps and 400nm compared to the 245ps and 370nm of my old Golf. And, as you no doubt know, the mk 8 GTI also has 245ps and 370nm.

Really all that development on its 8th generation and the new front wheel drive BMW gave it a hiding from launch... and sitting with it on rolling....nooooooooo the dislikes are GTi buyers for sure!

I was alongside a GR Yaris on the road the other day in my new 128ti. The guy roared off, weaving in between traffic like a lunatic. I left him to it.
When can we expect the review of the 128ti, driving comfort and stuff?
I recently got the 128ti, and had the mk 7.5 GTI Performance DSG before that for 3 years. Both cars with passive dampers. The 128ti is distinctly firmer, so less forgiving on a potholed or just uneven surface for sure. However, it feels more refined overall, and more planted on the road. It corners significantly flatter than the mk 7.5 GTI Performance. I have not driven the mk 8 GTI, and that may be as equally refined as the 128ti.
Gti's are better off not using Launch control, press the accelerator half way on the take off to avoid losing traction then floor it. 💯✔️✅
Can Ash please be given a GTI, Ciro did the same thing on TCR on the 400m sprint.I think Ciro is making VW looks bad.

I would love to see the GR86 in this group test, make it happen "Pizza Man". Hopefully Toyota South Africa have sold enough Hi-aces and Hi-lux's to offset having three performance cars in the line up. Exciting times ahead.
