    Met Gala 2024 or 1950sProm? Sewing this vintage evening dress, using a true vintage pattern, was an absolute adventure! There were many moments where I had to take a break. This pattern was just totally beyond my experience level but the moment this vintage Simplicity pattern came to me I knew I had to try it anyway: Although this was challenging for me, there were lots of happy dances to celebrate each little win along the way. A reminder that you can do anything you put your heart into. Enjoy!

    A little note 💕 For some reason, my video editor wouldn’t let me add text after I edited all the clips together, so there’s no commentary in this video. But if you have any questions about the pattern, I’m more than happy to answer! When this pattern came into my life, I knew it was way beyond my experience level so I set out to make this a “wearable muslin.” But every time I figured something out I’d get pleasantly surprised and am really delighted with how it turned out. Lots of happy dances in this video, lol. I just get so excited and celebrate each little win along the way. They’re a reminder to me that we can do anything we put our heart into! Enjoy!
    Xoxo, Cindy Leaux

    LOL, your happy dances are everything.Fascinating how the original owner seemed to have used the boddice, but not the skirt. I wonder what theirs looked like.
    By-the-by - do you have a tailors ham? They're really useful for ironing anything with a curve in it. Also - I have an old pill bottle I keep my broken and bent needles in. I drop it in the sharps disposal bins they have scattered around town.
    If you ever need to repair an old pattern you can use acid-free tape - it basically adds a layer of fine paper; the glue is such that it won't yellow over time.. I find mine at the local art & framing shop.

    When your video first started, a prom dress (costume) immediately came to mind. It was worn by an actress named Susan Buckner. The name of her character in the movie was Patty Simcox in the 1978 movie version of Grease. Your version of the dress is much more detailed by the end of the video, but the color and the style of the ruffles reminded me of so much of that dress I thought I'd share that. I don't know if you've ever seen that movie before or not, but I wouldn't doubt if they used that pattern. There are quite a few pictures of her wearing it and you can see videos right here on RUclips when they are doing the "Hand Jive" dance at the prom. Your version of the dress is much prettier in my opinion. Well done! 😊

    Hello Cindy, I love your content🥰. I am also a vintage sewist. I am a decade behind sewing 1940s style and stepping back into the 1930s a little bit. I wanted to know where you find your fabric. Do you shop mostly online or brick and mortar stores?

    • @CindyLeaux
      @CindyLeaux  2 месяца назад +3

      Thank you so much! I admire you for being able to work with the “blank patterns” of the 40s & 30s. I haven’t tried them yet but someday 🥰 For wearable muslins like this, I get fabric from Amazon or Walmart. I do have a beautiful linen that I’m looking forward to working with in the future. It’s from Mood Fabrics. ❤️

      @@CindyLeaux Thank you. I have purchased fabric from Fabric wholesale direct but not Mood Fabrics. I will have to check them out. If you have the time a system of drafting called the Haslam System of Dress cutting, I believe it was around from the 1920s to the 1960s. It is a really great way to learn the art of drafting and making some great garments you can write on lol. I usually find the books in Esty for about 12 dollars for a digital download. The downloads come with about 20 garments inside. Its great.

    I just found your channel and I have binged all your videos….i am a 44yo mom of 2 grown children who don’t need my attention like they used to as kids, a wife but I am also a newly retired nurse of 20+ years. I have a brand new sewing machine that I bought 3 years ago that is still in its box because I am so intimidated by it but I want to learn!! I am so inspired by your videos, I have everything and then some to get started and I think I’m finally going to open that box and try. What can it hurt? I can’t learn or get better if I don’t start right?! ❤

      Wow thank you for watching, your support means a lot! As I learn, sewing to me feels kind of like riding a bike. You’ll wobble around, fall and get up again a lot. But eventually you’re riding all on your own and once you get that happy feeling, you want to keep riding your bike all the time, lol. Like you said, you’ve just got to get started. I hope you have so much fun learning to sew!!

    My grandmother was a seamstress and she worked in the Woolen Mills in New Hampshire we lived in Oregon unfortunately I got to take a big airplane when I was 10 years old to go see my family in New Hampshire for the summer my grandma made me culottes with a matching vest and a white frilly shirt she taught me how to make a pattern out of a newspaper she would come out to Oregon and my mom and her would go shopping and they would buy big rolls of fabric and they would sit down all summer long and make outfits for me and my two sisters my best memories ever is putting on the outfits for the first couple of days of school,, I bought an old sewing machine at a yard sale $10 I got out the newspaper and made my son shorts a matching vest and a couple of t-shirts for me it was fun

When I make the final version I’m thinking of using a taffeta for the underdress and for the overdress a net with actual crystals💕 Thank you for watching 🥰

    I wondered how you sewed the tulle with all the little crystals without breaking a needle or 2 or 3 or 4? I love your videos, but I wish you verbally explained your process. Thank you for making gorgeous 1950s dresses. Do you ever make a copy of the pattern to preserve it? Also, do you wear what you sew. I love that red dress you made, the one that had an Asian feel to it. I look for the patterns you use to make them, but unfortunately I can never find my size. You made an absolutely stunning ball gown. I think you are a very talented seamstress.

      Thank you so much!! In the future I’ll be sure to add in more detailed video of the instructions. The net I’m using is sparkled with lightweight sequins so the needle easily sews straight through. And yes, I wore the qipao dress for Chinese New Year celebrations as well as to a few other functions. It was so fun & surreal! Thank you for watching 🥰🩵
