    One of the things that makes this video so good/helpful is that you show the imperfections in your process along the way; this means much more to a DIYer/non-professional than the videos made by pros. Then, when you end up with a terrific lawn at the end of your process it shows us, the DIYer, that even though our imperfect process may discourage us as we move through it - we can end up with a very nice result.

    Sam, that's some task you took on. It will be worth it in the end. I renovated my back lawn in April. It's only 45 m2, a postage stamp compared to yours, but I sit back and am proud of what I have done. I should say that I am 75 years old and suffer with arthritis in my knees. It took me 5 days to do what you did in a few hours. Luckily Scotland is blessed with lot's of rain. I did however invest in an automatic water timer, I had it set to come on 3 times a day for 15 minutes. You will soon have a nice lush lawn. 👍

    I am also using the same brand but in RTF. It is a multi-grain tall fescue. But I am in Las Vegas so that is a big difference. In order to open those bags you have to look for a small spring and start pulling on the small string on one corner of the bag. If it doesn't work on the first time then move to the other side and pull out a small string from there. It always works for me. Best of luck.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  Год назад +1

      ahhh you need to pull the small string first? I usually just take one, the times I have managed to do them I guess I guessed and picked the right one. Always thought it worked by pulling either. Was so happy I managed to do it, never happens :)

    In Las Vegas I do top dress with peat moss. Actually it is a special type of peat loss that comes out of Northern Canada. I do that in order to make sure that it keeps the birds away, especially the damn pigeons, and keeps the soil or seed moist. You're in Las Vegas with a humidity level of only about 10 or 15% keeping it moist is a priority.

    Good turf tips. The weather is delaying some of my over seeding this year. Normally I get an early start, mid August, but this year it was just too hot, and then dry. At more normal seeding time, of September 1-15, it was still hot and DRY. I've never over seeded this late, but I'm going to try it. The turf type tall fescue ( tttf) that I use is from United Seed and it normally germinates in 5-7 day's or so. I have used the big square bails of peat moss at times. Just barely cover. Thanks, John, Indiana, US

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  2 года назад

      Hey John, thanks mate. Had the same here, was hot for a long time so it was hard to start early, downside is that our fall and spring are getting shorter, we jump straight from and to winder it seems, hard to plan overseeding with that kind of weather. Let me know how your lawn turns out after the overseeding.

    If you keep on leveling it over the yrs, the lawn level will keep on rising. How’d u control the height in few yrs.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  2 года назад +2

      Hey Amit, good question. If you use sand based top dress then for sure it will raise the lvl over the years, however, it will sink a little bit as well, especially when you core aerate, so it won't make much difference. If I would have a perfect lvl then I wouldn't add anymore. Normal top dress with organic matter will decompose over a year so that won't affect it either.

    I know they use the peat moss here because once you get the hydrophobic wet enough, it will retain a lot of the moisture you put on it, but it doesn't have any nutritional value at all. I am going with a compost for on top of my reseeding this year, and see if that help. We are in a severe drought, so I will have to find a way to sneak water it 2x per day.
    Good job. I wish I could redo the whole thing too.

I know it's a lot of effort but it will be satisfying to see it transform over time, plus it's good exercise! There's a good bit of thatch and it's quite patchy, so I'll need to rent a scarifier for a day. I'm in the process of making compost which will be used as a top dressing. My plan is to spray or scatter moss and weed killer, then mow, then dethatch/scarify, then rake, then feed it, then overseed and cover with a top dress. Does this sound like it makes sense? Any tips are welcome!

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  2 года назад +1

      Tjena, det blev nog ett lager på 1-2 cm skulle jag nog tro, mätte inte men skulle gissa. Jag hade inte använt den för att sprida k-dress, iaf inte om man vill ha ett tunt fint lager. Dock kan jag säga att jag använt den väldigt mycket ändå för vanligt dressgjord från Rölunda, alla grannar lånar den hela tiden också. Jag personligen tycker den är värd, dock inte för att sprida k-dress 🤷🏻‍♂️
      Eventuellt att man kanske kan gå snabbare så att den sprider mindre per kvm, dock bara en hypotes.

    Hi Sam, Im in the US and everything I see and read recommends peat moss. However as of this year I think, a lot of places are starting to discontinue sales of peat moss because of environmental issues that is causes. "Peat extraction releases substantial CO2, a greenhouse gas, contributing to climate change" according to an article from the NY times. So I think over time we will see a lot less peat moss use. I am planning an overseed project this fall and will be trying to find a good topdressing alternative. Love the channel. I think Adams english is just fine. I wish schools in the US put more of a requirement and emphasis on a secondary language.

    • @SamsLawn
      @SamsLawn  Год назад +2

      Hey mate, I also think peat moss is going to be used less and less, doesn't really add anything to the soil either. The only thing though is that it's pretty easy to use, it keeps moisture really well! But I still would go with a nice topdressing. I will let Adam know mate, he will be happy someone thought his English is good! :)
      English is mandatory here and a secondary language as well. So normally we have English together with either Spanish, French or German :)

    If you put a polythene sheet over the top for a week you'll only have to water it once. It heats the ground, stops the water evaporating and keeps birds off. Speeds germination rapidly

    3.8 cubic foot tightly compressed bale of reasonable quality peat moss is 116 krona here, this kind is screened and dried with natural gas heaters because a lot of the cost of shipping peat is the weight.
    Air dried, more fibrous and chunky peat is more money because it must be handled carefully in harvesting.
    Wheat farmers don't like bogs in their field, equipment gets stuck and wheat likes heavier soil so some, on private land gets diesel fuel thrown on it and it gets lit by a tiger torch or flame heater.
    Most will never be dug because there are no roads in those places.

    • @wayneessar7489
      @wayneessar7489 2 года назад +2

      @@SamsLawn Peat is sterile and acidic so it deters fungus, and is very absorbent.
      In WW1 they put dried moss inside bandages for the soldiers because of those qualities....and hardly any died! ( I do not know that!)
      The pH of a peat bog might be 4.5 so not much can grow there.
