There is something super appealing about shooting black powder out of a lever gun. The Winchester Model 1873 rifle was introduced with the .44/40 chambering as its only cartridge for the first few years and that is why most of the very early Model ’73s were not marked with any caliber indication.
Thankfully corporations like Uberti and Chaparral are manufacturing Winchester 1873 replica's today and we don't need to spend horrendous amounts of money to find an original Winchester. I think some of these replica rifles could use some polishing to slick them up and remove burrs. As you can see the lever throw is a bit 'grabby' on this carbine model and hangs up sometimes so I had to be somewhat forceful with it.
The good news is that all that BP smoke and Sulphur smell really helps with repelling mosquitoes! Tons of fun!

Turns out that I had the carrier lifter spring screw backed off too much which was allowing the carrier to hang up. I tightened it a bit and she's running smoothly now. The Uberti's are way oversprung!
I think the '92 is overall a much better design, but BP fouling is definitely easier to control in the '73. They can be short stroked too, which makes them the #1 choice for Cowboy Action race guns but most of that extra speed is only usable by the top 15% of speed shooters.

I think the blackpowder fouling issue is more related to case thickness at the neck. 44/40 brass is very thin in the neck because black powder pressures are so low. Thinner brass reduces rate of fouling significantly. 44/40 brass is perfect for black powder.

I'll bet that barrel was pretty warm after that run. BP does tend to heat them up. Fun stuff.

I use a little bit of automotive superfine rubbing compound on the parts I want to slick up, reassemble and cycle it a bit to slick them up. Either that or just shoot it a heck of a lot!

Very nice carbine! Last year I was fortunate to find an Uberti 1873 rifle in .45 Colt at a local shop, when the price was dropped $200 to $1,000 US I snapped it up. I have an original 1873 rifle in .38-40, fine rifles.

      Definitely 44-40 black powder loads

@@Riflechair I thought the 200 grain projectiles were a little heavy for a 357 mag but not impossible. I've seen them used for the 357 maximum and didn't know if they were possible for the magnum if used in conjunction with BP. I looked very closely at an 1873 Uberti in 357 a few years back but passed it over. I wish now I hadn't. lol

@@jimdent351 This is Tudenom’s rifle. I went with the Rossi 92 in 44 Mag and he went with the Uberti 73. I personally prefer the smoother M92 lever throw but if I had to run black powder I would choose the extra case capacity of the 44-40. Uberti also makes a much more attractive looking rifle too.

@@Riflechair If you had said .357, I was going to replay the video to see if I had missed a steam locomotive idling in the background! Oh, by the way, what did you think of Trudie saying that Canadians have no " natural right of self-defense?" When I heard him say it, I immediately thought, "this guy didn't hang out in the same bars I hung out in!"
