RUGER AMERICAN RANCH - DEER RIFLE

  • I usually find myself hunting in dense woods and long range shots are the exception rather than the rule. I feel pretty confident with this rifle out to 250 metres +/- without too much fuss. Maybe this rifle is worth reloading for? I am curious to know how well that 123gr PPU bullet will hold together on a deer at close to medium range.
    The rifle is super lightweight, easy to point and I'm not getting any younger. Speaking of which this would be a good first hunting rifle for a youth. The recoil is tame and the rifle can take a bit of punishment without feeling too bad about it.
    For your consideration here are some shooting drills that I've put the rifle through and in most cases it was very poor quality ammunition. Both examples were shot at 100 metres.

    I have used a CZ 7.63x39 carbine quite a bit and the Federal 123 grain loads gave fantastic performance on good sized deer. I believe they use a Speer Gold Dot bullet. Always full penetration, not too destructive, accurate and all one shot bang flops. Ranges were approx 25-155 yards. Can’t ask for more. The CZ was not smooth initially but became much better with use. I don’t love everything about it but overall as a package, it’s a winner.

    I have the leupold VX freedom 2-7x scope on mine. Very nice lens clarity, compact and light weight scope for not a lot of money. I don't have a muzzle break / flash hider on mine because I noticed they always negatively affect accuracy and it just makes them a lot louder. Calibers like 7.62x39 and 300 blk or even a 357 magnum rifle don't really have much recoil anyway.

    For these, the Primary Arms 1-6x calibrated for caliber is another great option scope. Near to one hole groups are not uncommon in these R American Ranch 7.62X39 rifles. They seem to shoot well in all calibers they are offered in. I like the 350 Legend version, only knock is the thread pitch they chose to use, which is stupid for bore/caliber size. All 350 Legends that are threaded should be 5/8" x 24" not 1/2"x28". By using 1/2"x28", you create very thin walls, and a possibly point of failure, which actually is noted by some barrel makers.

    Best powder to reload 7.62x39 is the ADI AR2205 (4227/H110) by far or same burning rate in my experience.
    Ruger bore must be 310 so for hunting application Nosler BT and Hdy SST are well suited.
    Sierra 125 pro hunter, Lehigh control chaos 123 (top accuracy) is 311 also in this bore and on the cheap is S&B SP 123.
    I have no experience with Speer Gold Dot (310) but it should certainly be high on the list though a quick expanding bullet works better in this bore.
    Just a side note with a 310 bore you should be able to use 308 projectiles, check neck tension or/and crimp!

    All the RAs I’ve tried print very close groups, especially if you find ammo it really likes.
    However, I found that feeding issues are not uncommon. Frequency of feeding issues varies from one variant to the next, but happened to every single RA model I’ve ever used (and I used at least a couple of dozens).
    Too bad, really, because it’s a precise, affordable, versatile rifle.

    If you can achieve sub 4MOA with factory ammo, and it shoots reliably, then of course it's worth it to reload.
    The only reason not to reload is if you wanna throw it in a creek because it's a total POS, OR because you get 1.5 to 1 MOA with factory ammo anyway.

      I cycled mine a bunch of times with auto body rubbing compound and it smoothed it out a bit. I've done that with new pump shotguns on the wear surfaces in the action and they end up slick as snot after. My only problem with this rifle is I'm a south paw and tend to keep my left hand around the pistol grip of the stock and work the bolt with my right. I keep forgetting to move my thumb and end up getting a chunk taken out of it by the back of the bolt. Thinking of getting a magpul stock as it looks like it might miss my stupid thumb lol. Plus with that, if you buy the one with the stanag magwell for the 5.56 or 300 blackout you could run 10 round x39 pistol mags until they ban them

    39 and 300 are my goto for deer in my area. If I get 100 yd shot is rare. These two are good enough. Want to get a 8.6 next. Thought I needed a 06 or 08. But those overkill even 6.5 is to much. We can use 223 also if we want. Legal in my state.

    I was thinking before you put the picture of the new bolt handle up ! That it might benefit from one of those large push on rubber bolt knobs but you’ve gone one better.

    • @Riflechair

      The spring tension in the 5-rnd Mini-30 magazines is pretty stiff. It might be worth while keeping you mags stacked for six months and see if that makes a difference?

      @Rebellion1776 Год назад +1

      I run Tula 154gr SP in mine as well, and the accuracy is sub MOA with it. There is some velocity loss though using the heavier grain round in a 16” barrel, but for hunting in my area, where most shots are 100 yards or less, it is not that big of deal. Still drops the deer at the point of impact most times 🤷🏻‍♂

I was thinking if you reloaded some cast bullets for practice. It’s .311 could you use 303 bullets? As always thank you so much for sharing God bless you and the family. Stay safe lots of fires right now yikes!!!

      Hey there - I'm busy as heck and surrounded by mountains of work. Every time I put a dent in it something else comes in from a different angle. I've poured, sized, loaded and shot a lot of lead projectiles but I still consider myself a novice. It is very time consuming and resource dependent but is definitely rewarding when you find something that works well. I think a .311" 150gr round nose cast bullet would work well in this rifle. I'm just worried about the OAL for these Mini-30 magazines.

I am looking at a Remington VTR. 308 my buddy won on tickets, hes got it unfired and hes offered it to me wayyyy cheaper than any gunshops cost would be. Its twist rate is 1:12 won der how 180gr hunting bullets would do in it. My older 308 is 1:10

    I wonder if anyone offers a replacement follower, or if it would work to just mod the existing for last round hold open. Im not sure, but think that if you change out the bottom mag well, for the 5.56 version, you might be able to run AR47 mags.

    • @juliogonzo2718
      @juliogonzo2718 9 месяцев назад

      Yeah you can change the magwell to run stanag 7.62x39 mags for sure. Other option is a stanag magwell short action magpul stock, although the stanag mag might have the same problem. Not sure if you could grind the hold open off the mini 30 follower maybe. I've heard if you get rammy and try to force the bolt it will wreck the follower.

The only way I'd be interested in the Zastava line-up is if had a clip groove milled into the receiver to receive SKS stripper clips.
