- I noticed about 25 cries that were shared. I didn't include variations of a cry if it's limited to just one evolutionary line i.e. Diglett/Dugtrio or the Nidoran family, but if the evolutionary line shares it with someone else, I included it i.e. Growlithe, Machoke, Machamp.
EDIT 4/8/17: I've been getting so many comments about Jolteon and Flareon's cries being mixed up, no need to leave more comments about them. Also pro-tip, read the comments to make sure you aren't saying something that's already been said. Just a piece of comment section etiquette.

@Clutch7 I meant tone, but also there are millions of different melodies that could be made in a 3-5 second timeframe even with just 3 sounds. So there shouldn't be 2 identical cries. Even if they do sound similar.

This reminds me of something I actually miss about the older games, and that's the fact that until gen 6 I believe, the Pokémon from gen 1 kept their original cries, so the gen 1 Pokémon seriously had an awesome retro feel to them due to their cries

It's incredible that they were able to create 151 different creatures with their own personalities and cries, on a gameboy color no less. After 25 years it's easy for us to forget just how unique and fresh Pokémon was when it came out, but it deserves the legacy it has left

Put into account the hardware limitations at the time. At the time sqeezing 39 different audio files+music+SFX+scripts+100s of sprites into a cartridge the size of the Game Boy's was quite an acheivement. Think before you judge.

I heard (in a documentary many many years ago, hazy on the details) that originally there weren't any cries planned. That was a last minute addition when they thought there wasn't even any space left for it. One dude miraculously added them by resusing and combining small soundbites that were already in the game

I feel like the similar sounding cries may be a small part of why a lot of people feel so attached to the original Kanto Pokémon. I think it really helps give them a unique identity as a group, even though it was only done because of limited resources.
Reminds me of how certain animals will mimic or have similar sounds in a category is species once breeding came into play. These creatures can communicate with similar sounds.
See, I’m fine with evolutions having some altered version of the previous form, but when an entirely different line shares the same sounds... That’s where it gets iffy.
It's all due to hardware limitations. They didn't have much storage to work with for gens 1 and 2, so they had to get creative.
I had no idea people were so picky about these glitchy sounding error noises, lol. I played the shit outta gen 1 as a kid but I never remembered the cries..

Gen 1 has a total of 38 base cries the original 151 follow in gen 1 with the majority of them having the same sound as a previous one but with different pitch. Vulpix and Ninetales's cries are based on Graveler's, Krabby and Kingler are based on Mr. Mine, Kadabra and Alakazam's based on Mr. Mine, and a lot of others are based on Staryu's cry including Mew

When I had them in my old Ruby team I noticed that Lairon, Swampert and Groudon cries sounded like a progressively deeper version of each other
I love how the cries are so simplistic but they give you the scope of how certain Pokémon behave. Even if they do sound the same, the pitch of the cry is heightened or lowered to distinguish them and make them seem stronger or weaker.

Some of this are evolution so it makes sense that they have a similar cry, others like mew and Mewtwo also make sense since Mewtwo is a copy of mew, the other I guess they work with what they have

I may be wrong but I think poliwag and ditto are also exactly identical, but I can't definitely tell the rest apart

I’ve played through these games so many times and never noticed that Poliwag and Ditto’s cries were the exact same, OMG (same with Machop and Omanyte, too).
Also, I’m surprised you didn’t throw the Clefairy line in there. I could swear that Clefairy sounds almost identical to Horsea.
All things considered, they did a really good job packing each of the original 151 with distinct enough character that it wasn’t that weird that they all had similar cries
