I like the way you trimmed it off with the one by five. Great job I love it when the women pick up the tools. My daughter for the past 30 years has owned her own cabinet shop.
If you set your saw blade at a 45 degree angle and just barely raise it above the table height, (A dado blade helps) you can rip your V grooves in the ply without making the planks. Since you made the seams in straight lines instead of staggering, you would simply hang the full sheets of ply instead of the planks. No caulking except at the sheet seams and half the time as long as you have the extra hands.
Working my way through all your videos and I have to say that I find them both informative from a DIY point of view but also highly entertaining. I also have to say that you are the nicest looking 'bag lady' I've ever seen :)
Thanks for showing this. I wanted to put up planking on the ceiling and put it off because of the cost. This idea brings the project down to my cost range.
Looks great! I did a faux ship lap. With 1/4 " underlayment.. Ripped 8 " strips square cuts and used pop cycle sticks for spacers.. Nailed on with brad nailer, then rolled on the paint.....
Wow - I can't believe I just now found this video and your channel, better late than never. I will be checking out your videos, I already love your style, design & ideas. TY
Very nice. I love how, when I've done a remodel myself, as time passes I eye the work approvingly and remember little details from the construction. It embeds a bit of me in the house.
you are amazingly ( not sure that's a word) talented. like my Dad says.." work smart not hard ". and save money along the way. that's looks beautiful Sandra. you can tell the difference. In fact it looks better than the tongue and groove. great educational video.
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! I just had a roof leak that wrecked my bathroom and closet. My insurance told me the damage was maintenance related so I am not getting any help there. After seeing this, I KNOW I can make the repairs myself and it is going to look better than ever! Thank you! I love the tank top you have on at the end :)
fantastic work! I did an entire house back in the Philippines long time ago, all stained solid 3/4 mahogany ceiling planks except they're all in a diagonal pattern, made the entire interior of the house looks so much larger. I also noticed you have quite an expensive taste when it comes to tools. congratulations on your project!
Wonderful job Sandra. If you get 6" DA paper with a Velcro backing you can get a lot of versatility with differing grits and your sanding sponge will grip it really well and allow for following contours. The wood was pretty enough that I kind of hated to see you paint it. Again, great job and great thinking outside the box. Thank you for sharing.
Looks good! That $400.00 job looks a $3,000.00 job! It always makes my wife and I happy when we do our own work instead of hiring someone for jobs at our house. Subscribed.
I actually love the look of the sanded part at the 5:29 minute mark! That would look great with the whole ceiling completed in that look and then covered with clear coat polyurethane. Lots of work but looks great! :-)
Was really thankful for your video. Thanks so much! I was looking for a cheaper alternative to tongue n groove due to cost currently. Used this method for our screened porch ceiling, and it came out great!! Ty!!
I did something similar but used 1x6s and beveled the edges. I still saved a ton of money over T&G planks. I stained it at the time but now I am in the process of painting it white. I m into a white groove nowadays. Everything else seems too dark. Great job
a new project is always a great excuse to buy new tools. Nice to see you're using your third arm. They do have their uses *Grin*. I wear a baseball cap to help protect mine. It lessens the random bumps it manages to find.
Nicely done. I suppose some would say that buying the Festool sander wiped out a portion of the savings you got by doing it yourself, but I like to say doing the job yourself allowed you to get an awesome tool that you can use over and over again.
I think with the caulking just pre-sanding the edges would have been much easier, a conventional sanding block or R.O sander should do it. Regardless of steps taken it looks great, and job well done.
This is a fantastic idea. I’ve been racking my brain on how to do a plank wall on the cheaper side and get a quality look. The bevels make the difference here. Fantastic job. You really inspired me to do this in my shop! Fellow tuber here! 💪👍💪👍 love your shirt in the beginning of the video too!
Very well done and explained. Several issues of concern outlined, solved and / or resolved by extra effort. You did a LOT of work and it shows in a job well done. Regards.
Saving money? Bought a new festool ($450) and line laser, depending on what kind $90-$200. That ceiling cost more than $400 and it sure as hell wouldn't cost $3000 to do a ceiling
Thanks for your tutorial. I would stagger the size of the boards myself so I would not have a line down the center. After watching this, I would just cut the boards and throw them up and use the caulking to make the V shape between the boards.
I've often thought of doing something similar - Using plywood planking with furring strips to make "board and baton" siding. Never thought to bevel the edges to make it look like tounge and groove. Great idea.
They have had it for years. Look in the paneling section. Packages cover almost as much as a sheet of paneling, and the cost is around ten bucks a package. knotty pine, tongue and groove. Some come with or without beads in the middle. Have put up thousands of feet of it.
Cool that you have an assistant named Penny, so do, my precious wife. Caleb Harris posted your channel on Facebook and had to check you out. Great job and interesting take on making slatted ceiling.
Awesome Job! I used the same product in my overhead camper as paneling! 11 bucks a piece. I like the idea though on beveling! On holes, or whatever, you could use a trim bit in a router and get it perfect too. Not as fun holding it up though towards a ceiling.....
I love your Build Like A Girl shirts!! Where'd you get them? I definitely need at least one. Thanks for sharing all your efforts and experience. Much appreciated.
Great video and the result looks tremendous. I have to ask though, why cut a large sheet into strips? why not route grooves of the same shape into the sheet and just put the whole sheet up in one go?
Looks really good! I'm getting ready to do this in a 34'x38' room with vaulted ceilings. Not sure how I'm going to do the 14'H sections... might need to get some scaffolding for that
Just discovered your channel, love ❤️ ❤️ it! It's nice to have help, everyone runs the other way whenever I mention doing a project so I usually do them myself.
I actually love the look of imperfections when cutting yourself as apposed to buying panel. Great job!! That sander you bought isn't so cheap. Did you ever use it again?

Oh I missed the part in the video where they asked for your advice
very very good sandra as a man of construction for more than 30 years im impressed , pat your self on the back mate cheers
5:02 You crushed me. That wood looked amazing
Working my way through all your videos and I have to say that I find them both informative from a DIY point of view but also highly entertaining. I also have to say that you are the nicest looking 'bag lady' I've ever seen :)
LOL Thanks! Glad you like the videos :)

Girl... you are I credible. The ceiling looks awesome!!!
WOW!! I am glad I found you online. You are doing a lot of stuff I want to do to my home. You explain everything and great detail. Thank you.
Thank YOU. It's great to know that my videos help even a little bit. :) Thanks for the nice comment.
Very nice. I love how, when I've done a remodel myself, as time passes I eye the work approvingly and remember little details from the construction. It embeds a bit of me in the house.
+Wood Tools Workshop :-D Cool!
Love it!!!!. Just finished my kitchen amd will be doing the 1/2 bath next. This is a must for the ceiling.....

+patrick mcglone Thanks Patrick! (and I knew you meant "can't tell..."). I appreciate it very much!
GIRL POWER!! I LOVE IT!!! You gave me so many tips on DIY ceiling planks. Excellent job!!!
Loved your intro and personality! I've got a large attic room needing a redo and I think I'm going to use your process. Great tips and info!!
Ceiling looks fantastic! You go Sandra.
That would totally work to finish a basement as well. You just saved me a ton of $$$$! Thanks!

Retired Custom Home Builder from Boston Area, NEW SUBSCRIBER, NICE JOB‼️👍👍. Vinny 🇺🇸

Awesome job - looks great - I love the way you say "caulk"!
Avoids other comments. :-)

I LOVE YOUR PLASTIC APRON IDEA! I’m going to try it.
Hey Sawdust Girl you did a terrific job, love the realistic plank look.
Thanks!

THanks so much!

That sander is frigging sweet - I assume there's an awesome festool vac hooked upto it as well.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE this! I’m not sure my shoulders are up to the task but I’m willing to try!
I did something similar but used 1x6s and beveled the edges. I still saved a ton of money over T&G planks. I stained it at the time but now I am in the process of painting it white. I m into a white groove nowadays. Everything else seems too dark.
Great job
what size nail did you use? What type of paint did you use? :) thanks in advance
I've seen another video where they used nickles to space the planks, the bevel is WAY better and gives a much more authentic look. Great video!
a new project is always a great excuse to buy new tools. Nice to see you're using your third arm. They do have their uses *Grin*. I wear a baseball cap to help protect mine. It lessens the random bumps it manages to find.
+Kiwi Dashcam LOL Yes, saving money on materials means I have more to spend on tools! Woohoo
Nicely done. I suppose some would say that buying the Festool sander wiped out a portion of the savings you got by doing it yourself, but I like to say doing the job yourself allowed you to get an awesome tool that you can use over and over again.
+Howard Springsteen Absolutely. I say that because I saved so much on materials that gave me a chance to buy a new tool or two! :-D
I think with the caulking just pre-sanding the edges would have been much easier, a conventional sanding block or R.O sander should do it. Regardless of steps taken it looks great, and job well done.

Excellent work there, Sandra. Love the look.

Very well done and explained. Several issues of concern outlined, solved and / or resolved by extra effort. You did a LOT of work and it shows in a job well done. Regards.
Great project, and definite money savings. Even without counting the new tools you bought.
Great video! Love the 45 degree bevel idea on each piece. Thank you for sharing.
Great job! That looks amazing and saving that much money on something that doesn't effect the end result is huge. Keep up the good work!
Saving money? Bought a new festool ($450) and line laser, depending on what kind $90-$200. That ceiling cost more than $400 and it sure as hell wouldn't cost $3000 to do a ceiling
Great video. You not only explain how but why. I found it very informative.
I think it looks absolutely beautiful!
Nice! I may have been inclined to prep the edges and prime the boards before installing. Turned out great 👍
...and stagger the joints
Thanks for your tutorial. I would stagger the size of the boards myself so I would not have a line down the center. After watching this, I would just cut the boards and throw them up and use the caulking to make the V shape between the boards.
Lots of ways to do anything. Do what works for you.
I've often thought of doing something similar - Using plywood planking with furring strips to make "board and baton" siding. Never thought to bevel the edges to make it look like tounge and groove. Great idea.
Man .That looks nice! You would think somebody would have mass produced faux tongue and groove .Maybe even in 4x8 sheets
They have had it for years. Look in the paneling section. Packages cover almost as much as a sheet of paneling, and the cost is around ten bucks a package. knotty pine, tongue and groove. Some come with or without beads in the middle. Have put up thousands of feet of it.
Beautiful job. Well done.
Marvellous project ...Congrats for your video....look great !
Looks awesome! I love any ideas that save tons of money!
I would have conditioned the plywood before priming, but that's me. Great idea, and a lot of savings. Thank you for the video.
Your awesome! Wish I could have done this when I was your age. Great inspiration
My hat is off to you !! You go Girl!!
Thanks for this DIY how to. We are currently looking to do something very similar as we refinish our basement rec room. Very helpful video!
Stunning!! YOU GO GIRL!
Nice, I like the 45 degree cuts.....I'm going to copy that idea on an upcoming project. thanks
Cool that you have an assistant named Penny, so do, my precious wife. Caleb Harris posted your channel on Facebook and had to check you out. Great job and interesting take on making slatted ceiling.
keep it up..as a man i love getting insight from a woman on a heavily male dominated industry
wow!! the $2600 that you saved should be your tip for sheer ingenuity!!
Wow. I love the idea of mitering the edges to create the v-grooves! I totally want to do that! :) :) :)
This was a joy to watch. Thumbs up and subscribed. Cheers!
Thanks for sharing. Very good video to help those of us who want to DIY.
Great job! The result is very impressive!
That's awesome! I'm stealing this idea for my bedroom.
Nice work. Looks good. Time consuming but worth it.
OMG I seriously can't believe how good that turned out! That's awesome!!!
Looks fantastic!
Lots of work but it's beautiful! Well done!
Kick ass job just did a very similar job for a client. Underlayment is awesome.
Thanks for the inspiration. Great discounted solution.
nice job! clean work.
Simply beautiful with a delightful result. Thank you for sharing!
Waoooo amazing.. What kind of plywood is that? Any plywood would do?
You are cool. I like the stubborn part.
Love the Video. I'm new here too. Thanks a lot for the details of your problem solving. You're a "Jazzy-Lady." Thanks again!
Great work and it looks amazing. thanks for posting.
Awesome Job! I used the same product in my overhead camper as paneling! 11 bucks a piece. I like the idea though on beveling! On holes, or whatever, you could use a trim bit in a router and get it perfect too. Not as fun holding it up though towards a ceiling.....
Awesome job and great video!
Good job lady. Love this project!
Incredible work! I'm saving your video so we can do this to our attic. Thank you!
Great job! I really want to do this! How does it look a few years later?
Excelente trabajo, no encuentro tutoriales en español para hacer algo similar en mi casa. Congratulations
Amazing job.
Nice job. I use 2 grip stands to help me hold things up. (It’s a light stand used for video production).
Menards sells 3/16" T&G planks in cedar and pine that are pretty cheap. Same look that you have but would save a few steps.
Appreciate that tip!! Will check into it, Thank you!
i used my stud finder to find my husband and show him your video and say see, so easy a girl can do it 😂😂😂
thanks girl 💞
Smart idea cutting the V groove. Looks really nice. I was wondering what type of quarter inch plywood was it. Was it lauan plywood?
thanks Greg.
She said it was 1/4" "pine underlayment". I went to home depot, they had 1/8"..
I love your Build Like A Girl shirts!! Where'd you get them? I definitely need at least one.
Thanks for sharing all your efforts and experience. Much appreciated.
That tagline is my trademark - so thanks! I sell those shirts on my website - sawdustgirl.com.
It looks very good.
I knew this video was old when she said the underlayment was $11 a sheet. Here in 2022, it's about $32 a sheet at Lowe's.
Just brought some at Liwes, Dec 2024, and it was about 27 a sheet.
Great video and idea. Can I use this to cover my dreaded popcorn ceiling without scraping all the popucorn off first?
You go girl! This came out really good! Can’t wait to do mine.♥️♥️♥️
Great video and the result looks tremendous. I have to ask though, why cut a large sheet into strips? why not route grooves of the same shape into the sheet and just put the whole sheet up in one go?
That's a great idea.
Plywood isn't great for routing, and then when lifting it up to install it would snap in more than one place.
Looks really good! I'm getting ready to do this in a 34'x38' room with vaulted ceilings. Not sure how I'm going to do the 14'H sections... might need to get some scaffolding for that
34 x 38? That's a huge room!
Scaffolding is a great idea. Thanks for the idea!
@@andrizeefoshizee it worked out pretty well. Even getting off the ground 2' made a huge difference in my angles and how far I could get in a pass.
love your wall too. I did that as my backsplash!
Just discovered your channel, love ❤️ ❤️ it! It's nice to have help, everyone runs the other way whenever I mention doing a project so I usually do them myself.
what a great idea that looks just like planking
I actually love the look of imperfections when cutting yourself as apposed to buying panel. Great job!! That sander you bought isn't so cheap. Did you ever use it again?
Cleaning caulking with a sponge: excellent idea actually, never thought about it! And rinse it off in a bucket of water.
amazing job
Excellent Project, very well done....
That’s beautiful! Nice job! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
