Yes I know I got a few of the Story Titles wrong for a couple classic Daleks ~ Just another whacky stupid Ace Creeper mistake, not to worry! I should have double, triple checked - Whoops!
One of the peter cushing "colourful" daleks did appear actually in the chase beside the "baseless" one mentioned, in one of the scenes on the planet mechanus with their base and big ears one or two appeared, mainly in background shots and to bring up the rear. Dalek 6388 covers this on the chase segment of dalek prop history.
Ace Creeper I read it on a article if u search up on the internet Doctor Who series 12 director it comes up with and article about Jamie stone directing and ed hime returning to write
so true the special weapons dalek is one that should have been used more, change the colour scheme to a matt grey and black, or bronze for the time war.
According to the book it was the only Dalek that dared to have a name “The Abomination” due to its constant mutation from the radiation released when it fired its weapon it actually had as sense of self and individuality.
@@gabrielstrong2186 Many thanks for the info, It goes to show that perhaps the past writers had story ideas for the evolution of certain Daleks or splitting off to form different groups.
I should point out (unless you knew already) that Phillip Hinchcliffe, unhappy he'd inherited the Sontaran Dalek and Cybermen stories, told David Maloney that they were going to shoot the Daleks in low light, low angles and make them the silent malevolent centrepiece. Incidentally, He also told the actors whose characters were exterminated to scream in utter agony.
In general, my favorite design are the movie Daleks (All of them from 1965-1966) But for BBC only mine would be the Dalek invasion of earth ones, the renegade Daleks and the Planet Of The Daleks Supreme
The “Stolen Earth” Red Supreme Dalek also appeared in “The End of Time Part 1” in archive footage, in “The Day of the Doctor” as its Head appears in the black archive and also in “The Zygon Inversion” in the same archive footage (scene in the black archive) from The Day of the Doctor”
My top 6 favorite dalek designs are: 6. Mark I daleks (first design) 5. Imperial daleks 4. Cushing daleks 3. Supreme time war dalek 2. Special weapons dalek 1. Emporer guard daleks (Parting of the ways/ bad wolf version)
With the Recon Scout, I’m honestly surprised it took them this long to try and make a Dalek animatronic. Figured in 2005 they would have switched over to that method.
My favourite overall design is the white and gold necros/imperial daleks (also includes the special weapons daleks). Runner up is the reboot bronze daleks which i think is the best redesign of any classic who villain. It stays true to the original yet gives it a modern update. If they brought back the metallic colours for the paradigm daleks that we saw in asylum of the daleks and got rid of the hump then that would be a contender too. My top 3 favourite designs for dalek leaders are the red and bronze supreme dalek from journey's end, the black and gold supreme dalek from planet of the daleks and the sleek black design of sec from doomsday.
When the Paradigm Daleks were later shown with darker colors instead of just being flat matte colors I actually did like them because they actually looked a little bit more imposing in those colors.
As a new fan I thought this list would be a little boring for me but I enjoyed it. It was fun and educational. I was always aware of their place in pop culture but I never realized how many variations there were . Your story about the first one that scared you as a pre-schooler added a nice touch. Of course my favorite is the Recon Scout. That episide was a blast to watch as a new fan.
12 was my favourite Dalek design for years and probably still is if I think about it. I used to have a remote control toy version of it in my teens that would just sit on my shelf and look imposing.
Silver dalek first appeared in death to the daleks and gold-ish brownish dalek is from day of the daleks and I hate the fact that that bothered me so much I need to leave the house...
The dish on the back of the Dalek Invasion of Earth Daleks was there to increase their mobility because when the Doctor first met them on Skaro (which took place millions of years in the future), they were only able to move on metal. The dish transferred static electricity into them, which they used to move.
Crikey, I did not know there were so many Daleks, I have been following Dr Who since the late 60's and they still are by far the real Dr Who Nemisis, I too was frightened when I first met the Daleks probably around 4 or 5 like yourself, Simply the Best. Thanks for a detailed review fo all the types of Dalek's and to be fair your countdown was probably close to the mark, but I have to say I did like the coloured Daleks. Your No 1 was certainly one of the best :-). Great Video !
You say that the Silver Daleks appear 1st in Destiny, but they were in my 3rd fave Dalek story, DTTD, (Death to the Daleks). And it's a 'one off', as I don't see enough of them in the Dalek Asylum. ☺
@@legoroan9866 resolution wasnt meant to be a full dalek. It was a one off dalek. And was canonically built from memory. Its meant to be a bit wonky and off.
18:52, no the dish gives the dalek power, previously they received power through the floor in the dalek cities, and they would die if contact with the floor was lost, which is what happens in 'The Daleks' when one gets pushed onto a coat or something, cutting out its power
Obviously the Time War Daleks are top, but second might be the one from the Five Doctors. There's just something about the red lights that I really like.
Color is hardly a concern for me when it comes to daleks, they already look ridiculous it’s what they do and what their capable of that males the, terrifying. I have nothing against the time war dalek design but I really did like the paradigm one more and I hope it makes a return in some fashion. It just looked like a technological step up, the whole thing with it being able to bring out different weapons sounds amazing. The fact they each had different colors gave each a bit of individuality or functionality at least which I think is something daleks should have to keep them from being too cyberman esq. but the best part is the eye stalks!! they just look so pure evil with those ridges and the pupil makes gives you a hint of how they’re organic beings on the inside. My favorites of the new series really. Further I feel like tipping my hat to pretty much any design of a dalek that opts to use a different arm than the plunger design, it always breaks my immersion seeing those things, cushings robot clamps looks a might silly yes, but it fit with the rest of the design I feel! And though being made inside of a junkyard is stupid the recon scout dalek actually looked pretty cool as well, my favorite addition of course being the odd grabber mechanism it had. I don’t see what the isUe with sec is, is the shine of his black paint that distracting? I barely noticed personally but it’s not worth fighting over I suppose. I DEFINETLY think there was a better way of making him stand out, as well as make the rest of the cult of skaro stand out as well. I completely agree with you on rusty! That being said chained up dalek caan is the best worn down dalek. Imperial daleks speech bulbs are the phenomenal, it shows how less is more sometimes. If there are any daleks I look down upon it’s the invasion ones. The look less well built than the recon scout. The orange speech barely glow but stand out too much along with the blue part of the eye stalk, it’s gun arm is actually well done but it’s chassis looks to be made of tin or aluminum or some other weak metal. They kinda feel like worn down less imposing versions of the skaro daleks. Special weapons dalek is such a lovely diversion of the usual dalek design. It’s criminally underused! It definetly personifies the whole living tank feel, Both the emperors are fantastic but I’m afraid I have a preference for the time war one! I just love the exposed inner squid and yes the voice is godly! I can’t say if it’s actually drilled into the ship though, I remember the boss fight in LEGO dimensions had the emperor just floating around...course that’s hardly canon but you would be surprised how many doctor who references they plunged into that game so they DEFINETLY did their homework.
Omg that reminds me of a video called iron dalek JARVIS ARE YOU THERE THRUST CAPACITY 10% then the dalek flys TO HIGH TO HIGH HAPPINESS FOR YOU AND YOU AND YOU tank tolls in there is to much happiness here and at the end there was a cyberman saying we should make a team it then has the avengers theme but instead of a it was p and it said pandorica asseble
32:01 well I can see many paradigm daleks enraged by this entry, I can just imagine them screaming: Random Paradigm Dalek: We were beaten by a GLORIFIED BRONZE DALEK!!!!!
Unpopular opinion: the paradigm daleks are poor. (Since the comments are full of people praising them that's the true unpopular opinion tbh) They're just too big and painted like a bag of skittles. Also they didnt have to exterminate the ironside daleks, they could've used them as willing slaves. But why exterminate your long standing mortal enemy standing in front of you when you can waste time exterminating your predecessors who would happily do whatever you say.
@@ShadowKamehameha32 yes but they've had impure species as slaves before, ogrons and stuff, why not very close to perfection daleks who would willingly be your slaves?
Even Classic Daleks had replacements instead of just plungers, not only the Cushing ones. The larger bumpers on the Cushing version was so that the actors could stand and move more easily. Despite various color changes and a few additions (grippers, slats, etc.), they were all the original four props with relevant repairs.
Since this episode aired, the resolution dalek shows how you can redesign a dalek to not be terrible Not that I expect that one to be anything more than a one off....but it was nice while it lasted
Tough, my most favorite Dalek design would probably be... hell... yeah totally, the Time War Dalek! Fucking terrifying, and all that you said. My most favorite Classic Dalek would absolutely be the Special Weapons Dalek, you already know why.
I want to be loyal to the Gensis Dalek (my first), but the Time War Dalek is tops. The Ironside is a brilliant disguise; the best part is when it's on the roof during the bombing with blackout bags over its lights/ears. Can we get an honorable mention for the Dalek toys in the miniature set, in "Evil of the Daleks," I think? The clips allowed us in the U.S. to see the toys, not very accurate, but accurate to this scene!
One thing that I think helps the paradigm Daleks be more threatening is that it's like a council of Daleks looking down on the others which I think is pretty cool
The colourful "Chase" Dalek wasn't made to add a bit of a change; it was a film prop from the first Cushing movie, with the fender removed (it'has no fender section at all as a result), being used to pad out the group Dalek scenes. It's always in the background trying to not be noticed. The rest of the "Chase" Daleks were the ordinary ones, now with vertical waist slats, that went on top appear throughout the sixties.
I'm gonna be honest, this video kind of activated my fight/flight response when it came up in my recommended list, because I've seen so many of these kinds of videos that just absolutely trash some of my favourite designs. So I am really glad that this video isn't at all what I was expecting!! I remember back in 2010 when the fandom was finally starting to gain some traction where I live, and suddenly all I heard about for years was how ridiculous the Paradigm Daleks were, about how they looked candy-coated, all the power ranger jokes, hunchbacks, et cetera. But like, I always really liked the design? I agree that the colours were a bit bright and the super sleek texture made them look a bit too plastic, but other than that I had no problems with it, and I was a bit disappointed when they phased them out and pretended it had never happened. Especially so when I finally got to see one of the models in person at the Doctor Who Experience a few years ago, and I realized how tall the Paradigm Daleks actually were. Like, I'm fairly short irl, but that model towered over me. Now, rationally speaking, I knew it was just an empty prop on display, but there are few things more intimidating than a Dalek that can actually look down at you holy heck! And that bit about changing out their weapon types would definitely have been interesting to see, kind of hope they bring back that concept, if not the design itself. Oof, sorry for the rambling. What I mean to say is, good video, excellent takes on the various designs!
Bronze Daleks have been in use for 12 years now if they're in series 12 then make it 15 years. the longest colour scheme has been the grey Daleks making it 16 years.
I'm actually quite fond of one of the designs for the Time Lord Victorious Daleks. It uses the model of the TIme War Dalek, but the colour scheme is more classic: Silver, with blue sensor orbs. It really works.
..you do realise the chase dalek you mentioned with the blue dome and spheres is a movie dalek you were talking about just before..the BBC borrowed it to fill the studio with daleks
You missed the Emperor Dalek from Remembrance, the one who at last looks similar to what I always thought the Emperor should look like thanks to "The Dalek Tapes" comic strip from Doctor Who Weekly/Monthly.
The only Dalek I disliked more than the paradigm Daleks was the human Dalek from Daleks of Manhatten. A civil war between the paradim Daleks and the time war Daleks could have been very cool. One that might have been worth differentiating were Davros's guard in Stolen Earth. Yes there were very close to the time war Daleks, but they had a claw instead of a sucker, similar to the Cushing Daleks.
14:54 I believe that the Supreme Council Dalek prop was in fact one that had been used for the Cushing films [Or at least one of them], hence the similarities.
If memory serves (and it WAS 50 years ago) the disc on the back of number 13 was to enable it to move on non-metallic surfaces. Their inability was a plot point in the very first appearance of the Daleks.
Old school fan here, started watching around 1980. I have to say I agree with your number one pick. The so-called Time War Daleks were an excellent updating of the original design. They borrowed the best features of the Cushing movie designs, the tall base and tall head-bulbs to give them more height. Conversely, my least favorite design, the New Paradigm, took their inspiration from the worst parts of that same design, the bright colors and the clunkiness.
Very interesting video - I really really like the Paradigm Daleks, I really liked the roles behind the colours and the purpose they served. Which adds to that I don't understand why they slowly disappeared over the Smith Era. But nothing can beat the Time War Dalek it's so Iconic now :)
My fav is the Genesis Dalek- grey and sort of battle damaged look. They had a way on the show of making them appear out of the shadows which scared the hell out of me as a kid!
Note about the supreme council dalek, it was originally meant to be red and black and was changed by terry nation by demand of the bbc, it was one of his own personal daleks that he had put together for his ‘secret army’
The destiny Dalek are actually one of my favourites and I also like the recon Dalek as like an asylum type Dalek and I completely agree with you on the paradigm Daleks
What makes the 2006 Daleks great is the why they look because it feels alive and it just looks like it’s made of this cold and brown colour and how it looks like it’s made of kind of stoon metal that’s what I like about these daleks cuz the are just so so good and special

HOLY CRAP THAT'S LONG!
My favourite dalek design has to be the special weopons dalek
so true the special weapons dalek is one that should have been used more, change the colour scheme to a matt grey and black, or bronze for the time war.
According to the book it was the only Dalek that dared to have a name “The Abomination” due to its constant mutation from the radiation released when it fired its weapon it actually had as sense of self and individuality.
@@gabrielstrong2186
Many thanks for the info, It goes to show that perhaps the past writers had story ideas for the evolution of certain Daleks or splitting off to form different groups.
i did a little *squee* when i saw it in the dalek asylum episode.
@@gabrielstrong2186 Is that The Dalek Handbook by chance?.
18:51 the purpose of the satellite dish was to be able to move on earth as in “the daleks” they could only move on electric floors
25 was actually the design from Death to the Daleks
My favourite is Dalek Sec and my least favourite is the Recon Dalek
Don't kill me, people!
Everyone's allowed their opinion bud and those are some good choices! :D ~ Shame you dislike the new one tho, quite fond of that myself
I loved dalek sec last time I saw him it was 2007 and I was 3
Dalek Sec was intelligent, he saw his species' flaws and did what he was created to do. Imagine, feel, and find ways for the Daleks to survive
@@dalekthay5978 YOU ARE A GOOD DALEK!! EXTERMINATE THE DOCTOR!!
I actually liked it, it has a more alien feel to it
1:17 "Pervertly fine."
Ha ha... you make me feel really old. When 'Dalek' screened I was 26!!!! I really enjoy your vids. I liked the Cybermen one you did too : )
You were 26?! I was two months old!
You must be 40 now! That’s almost as old as my dad! (By the way, my own age is a very good way to tell how long new who’s been running).
I was 47
In general, my favorite design are the movie Daleks (All of them from 1965-1966)
But for BBC only mine would be the Dalek invasion of earth ones, the renegade Daleks and the Planet Of The Daleks Supreme
It’s in The Magicians Apprentice/ The Witches Familiair
My top 6 favorite dalek designs are:
6. Mark I daleks (first design)
5. Imperial daleks
4. Cushing daleks
3. Supreme time war dalek
2. Special weapons dalek
1. Emporer guard daleks (Parting of the ways/ bad wolf version)
With the Recon Scout, I’m honestly surprised it took them this long to try and make a Dalek animatronic. Figured in 2005 they would have switched over to that method.
Might be too expensive to build
The Imperial Daleks from Remembrance of the Daleks was pretty cool
When the Paradigm Daleks were later shown with darker colors instead of just being flat matte colors I actually did like them because they actually looked a little bit more imposing in those colors.
Dalek sec is my favourite that’s what made me get in dr who
You managed to make 43 minutes out of this... well done. Amazing
I cannot decide which emperor voice I prefer. They're both imposing but the original is more robotic while the new one sounds angrier.
My personal favourite Dalek is the Special Weapons Dalek. It’s really unique compared to the conventional Dalek design, and my God is it powerful!
I think for the new Dalek it could be have a classic and a new Dalek together but I like the new daleks
Your comparisons are absolutely fantastic. I could watch these all day.
My favourite dalek are the imperial daleks from remembrance of the daleks
You are correct!
@@neuralwarp I know I am
I’m offended by your choice!!! Dalek Sec is my FAVOURITE!
The best doctor who centred RUclipsr!
Well, apart from Dr Who themselves xD
The Imperial Daleks are my favourite, I just love the white and gold
I love the Recon Scout, the DIY look with all the hubcaps and old dalek parts make it look so brutal.
Daleks will do anything to keep their species alive
I think this is probably one of the most underrated Dalek designs
You say that the Silver Daleks appear 1st in Destiny, but they were in my 3rd fave Dalek story, DTTD, (Death to the Daleks). And it's a 'one off', as I don't see enough of them in the Dalek Asylum. ☺
Unpopular opinion but I love the paradigm daleks
Same! I wish they were used more, maybe a finale with them would have been good!
I agree, they actually look like daleks! Unlike the resolution version…
I don't love them, but I think they were cool
@@legoroan9866 resolution wasnt meant to be a full dalek. It was a one off dalek. And was canonically built from memory. Its meant to be a bit wonky and off.
I like the asylum color scheme on the paradigm!
The grey/green colour is Olive Drab, used on most World War 2 Allied vehicles :-)
Imperial Daleks are easily the best Dalek design. They are beautiful!
matte isnt gloss
your problem is theyre too glossy, not that they're too matte
Resurrection of the Daleks quote 'Withdraw'
18:52, no the dish gives the dalek power, previously they received power through the floor in the dalek cities, and they would die if contact with the floor was lost, which is what happens in 'The Daleks' when one gets pushed onto a coat or something, cutting out its power
What about the Pakistani Dalek and its child dalek?
PUT HIM IN THE CURRY!!
INTO THE CURRY POT!
HE-LLO DARLING IM-HOME
Lol
PUT GRANNY IN THE CURRY AS WELL
Obviously the Time War Daleks are top, but second might be the one from the Five Doctors. There's just something about the red lights that I really like.
Lol my favourite one is silver and black dalek lol the one at the bottom XD
It definetly personifies the whole living tank feel,
Both the emperors are fantastic but I’m afraid I have a preference for the time war one!
The Recon Scout should have had travelled on treads.
@@icymariobros3793 I am aware of that fine video.
Zarrg bugger
32:01 well I can see many paradigm daleks enraged by this entry, I can just imagine them screaming:
Random Paradigm Dalek: We were beaten by a GLORIFIED BRONZE DALEK!!!!!
I feel like I'm the only one who loves the recon Dalek from 2019
Not the only one! I quite like the design tbh!
Congrats on getting 100K views on this video
Unpopular opinion: the paradigm daleks are poor.
(Since the comments are full of people praising them that's the true unpopular opinion tbh)
They're just too big and painted like a bag of skittles.
Also they didnt have to exterminate the ironside daleks, they could've used them as willing slaves.
But why exterminate your long standing mortal enemy standing in front of you when you can waste time exterminating your predecessors who would happily do whatever you say.
Because those Daleks were impure compared to the Paradigm Daleks.
The Daleks of any kind despise impurity or anything that isn't Pure Dalek.
Classic Daleks rock, Modern Daleks suck. Both in visual design and the stories they’re in.
Since this episode aired, the resolution dalek shows how you can redesign a dalek to not be terrible
Not that I expect that one to be anything more than a one off....but it was nice while it lasted
I’m sorry but when you put the Resolution Dalek that high on the list, you lost me.
same... that would have been on the bottom of mine
Tough, my most favorite Dalek design would probably be... hell... yeah totally, the Time War Dalek! Fucking terrifying, and all that you said.
My most favorite Classic Dalek would absolutely be the Special Weapons Dalek, you already know why.
The time war and the classic Daleks and Sec
Thank You! Glad to hear it!
Everyone when they see a Paradigm Dalek: What's with the colours?
Me when I see the Paradigm Daleks: I wanna know what an Eternal Dalek is.
..you do realise the chase dalek you mentioned with the blue dome and spheres is a movie dalek you were talking about just before..the BBC borrowed it to fill the studio with daleks
Gotta agree with the placing of the Time War Dalek. When I think of Dalek I think of it and I remember my gasp at the reveal in Bad Wolf.
I didn’t know the chase daleks were different... you learn something new every day
My favourite dalek is the David Tennant supreme dalek but the best type of dalek is the modern who daleks
37:00 "when I was 4" wow, that makes me feel old now.. 16 years ago, time flies!
I really enjoyed that, thanks... (my faves are the Imperials, btw) ! :)
