My second guitar teacher (my first one quit teaching me because it wasn't Gods will) was so cool in that all I had was an acoustic guitar and he had 2 beautiful Ibanez Jem's. one was blue and the other neon pink. He asked me what kind of player I wanted to be and I told him I loved the blues especially electric so he told me to practice on my acoustic but after that when you're having fun play this, and he handed me his Blue Jem and he'd let me keep it until my family could afford me a cheap electric (i got a peavey predator 91") so every other week we's trade out guitars so for two weeks i had the blue and then for another 2 weeks i had the pink one. They were amazing, well built guitars with the thinnest necks i'd ever played on. I had a pretty cool second guitar teacher
Most people don't know that current Ibanez guitars with HSH pickup configuration are very versatile because in positions 2 and 4 the humbuckers are split, that is, you get that dual single-coily strat sound. Full humbuckers only in positions 1 and 5. Hence the output diference at 4:55. In my opinion that's a great thing Ibanez came up with, since the blend of two single coils sounds much better than the blend of a humbucker and a single coil.
So yea, that's exactly what I meant when I said "dual single-coily strat sound". Positions 2 and 4 have the middle pickup + one coil of each humbucker respectively.
If i ever hit a lotto win i will hunt down number 117 and personally deliver it man , no matter how many times i hear this story it always makes me wish you had that guitar \m/
PixxyLixxx it sucks because I want pink, but money wise it makes since to buy the green. They should have staggered the prices. 3k for pink and yellow. and 3.5k for green.
PixxyLixxx I just got mine and the green is a tad darker than the original. I have both. This is an irritation to me because if a custom shop can perfectly match the green , why can't Ibanez ..
These Jem's are incredibly versatile guitars, you can play blues, funk and even jazz on one -with a credible tone- they are that good. FAR more than just a shredding metal guitar. I have a 1991 777 DY.
I bought my floral JEM 77FP in 1987 (Steve Vai's living room curtains applied to the body and coated with a clear coat) I believe I paid $1200 for it, but had to wait something like 7 months for it. I still have it.
Ordered mine at the end of February, got the email last night saying it was finally in the country and at the store... Last guitar I bought was a 1994 Jem 7V back in January 2005, it's gonna be interesting to see how a brand new 1987 design is going to compare with a 23 year old Jem 7V.. Excited though, I should have it in about a week!
Sweet guitar, those pickups sound killer. Nice playing, loved the clean tones, really full sounding. Excellent point about all the extra labor generated by the claw! Never thought of that.
To every teenage boy who played guitar in 1987, these were the most beautiful sought after guitars from one of our biggest guitar hero’s. Now that they have been reissued in a small batch, to those same teenage boys who are now in their 40’s these are still the most beautiful guitars that we can now own. I have one of the 30th anniversary Lockness Green ones and it is a childhood dream come true and is a well fucking made axe with top end components and a total shredding machine. I am a player and not a collector, so I was very happy to be able to get the Lockness Green one as they were selling as fast as the dealers could post them on line. I was shocked and happy as fuck too that they let me have it under 2800 dollars OTD. I guess to them they figured a neon green guitar with pink pick-ups would be hard to sell at 3.5k plus, not realizing it was the most sought after by us 80’s shredders. To those that say its ugly, I say that is what we thought of when every guitar was some dull ass wood grain drab garage find looking thing during the Grung fucking era.
Hey Pixxy, I really dig your videos. Just droppin' a line to let you know I finally got my Ibanez JEM 777 LNG 30th Anniversary. I ordered it late January and it arrived yesterday. It is one Awesome guitar. I once owned a 1989 JEM 777 DY like the one in your previous video. I had to sell it and a 1990 Ibanez Universe 77 MC (Darren Johansen swirl) to buy a Veleno Original aluminum guitar with a chrome finish. I really miss my '89 JEM, so I'm glad I got a chance to buy another one, especially the Loch Ness Green, which the color is originally what I wanted when I first ordered my '89. Missed out on the '87 LNG JEM's. Nice work and keep rockin'!
Back in 2004 or something a bought a 77bfp in bad condition for approx $400 worth of my country's money. The blue paper turned green, and the back side was bubbling because exposure to water (paper absorbed the water). The maple fretboard was very dirty I had to scrub the dirt off. The pickup and tremolo was great. But after few weeks I noticed that the body was cracking and looks like it's gonna split in half front and back. I was young, didn't knew anything about guitar restoration, I dunno if it could be saved, I returned it to the seller. I swear I regret not keeping it!!
hey great video i am mainly a vintage, blues, fender guy and hate pointy heavy metal guitars BUT ever since i sore daniel johns from silverchair [ a great aussie band] rock'n a flower gem with a 70's strat neck on it in there video for there first single TOMORROW i have loved these guitars.i have a seafoam green strat with pink pickup covers on it and some other things done to it to try and get the vibe of one of these cool gems!
those ibanez were and are still good . back in the 80s that was like now an high profile guitar ... i liked the floaticg floyd rose system on these guitar , really usefull and perfect for dive bombs stuff .back in the 80s these ibanez were the best with the old nice kramers
I dreamed and dreamed of those when I was a kid. I'd get one now just for nostalgia, but I can't play those Wizard necks any more since I've been playing fatty necks for the last 20 years. Super sweet guitar!
Same. I remember seeing those Jems in guitar magazines in the late 80's and I felt like a kid glued to a Christmas catalogue. I never got one but had a few nice RG's over the years. These days I prefer the fatter strat and Gibson necks, although I still think the classic Jem design is a work of art.
I'd love to get a hold of one of these. I have an Indonesian JEM and it's... well, the neck isn't straight for one thing. Ugh. Doing the fret dress thing to try and compensate. She's beautiful and will never be #1. Think one of these would be if quality is anywhere close to my Japanese RG550
Last month I bought a 25th Anny RG1XXV in SHOCKING pink, just like Tone Kings. I blame you mostly as you endearment to your RG's. I feel like I scored at $600 in near mint condition. It my first Ibanez since 1985 which my first guitar was a Roadstar II in black. This completes my circle, Ive got the USA Charvel, the ESP KH2, a PRS SE24 (with a FLoyd) and a nice LTD M-1000 SE which is a hidden jem of its own especially for what you can buy them for. I never lusted for a Kramer, I was in the Charvel camp and bought one of the last USA single hum/Kahler super-strats in 1986. So finally I want to say thank you, the RG is really nice and Im really enjoying the Edge 02 trem system
I have an original #42 in amazing condition it's my unicorn and I'll be buried with it. It's the best playing guitar I've ever played I have an original floral pattern that is in mint condition, not even a blemish on the case that comes in second as far as playability. I build custom guitars and am in the process of building two of these one pink one for me and a green one for a friend who is another vai fan and jemaholic. I found the jem at guitar center, the floor manager put it on the floor for $1200 because he thought it wasn't the ( Vai model) jem hahaha kids are stupid. I only had $700 cash on me so they let me put it on hold and when I came in with the rest of the money to pick it up there were 3 managers waiting to tell me the price was a mistake and they wanted $2000 more dollars. I pulled out my receipt and told them it wasn't my fault they hire people who don't know anything about guitars to manage a guitar store. they were pissed witch I didn't understand they have no stalk i the store I would have been happy to see someone come up guitar center rips people off constantly. Needles to say I left with the guitar and didn't pay an extra cent, they were being complete dipshits but I had a receipt that had what I put down plus the price they agreed to sell it to me for. Long boring story but cool stuff never happens to me so it was a big deal, I would never be able to afford one at regular price back then and it's always been my dream guitar. The signature is still pretty clear but I also had Steve sign it again on the trem cover. Sorry for the crazy long comment.
I had one in desert sun yellow for 20 years..sorry I sold it but still have an awesome black ibanez n custom made ESP..The yellow one I had like that I paid 1000$ in 1987 in long island NY.Glass inlays were awsome,6 scalloped frets up high..awsome
hah! That's my photo of the #117 LNG. Bought it mid 90s, shipped it back to England. Sold it in the late 90s for around 1500, so not thousands! but I guess the next guy did. Note the white knobs, as I was waiting for some replacements. Funny hearing you say 117 and then that photo popping up
No way!! That's awesome! So did you buy it from a guy named Bill (William) in the Boston area? These days it's hard to get one under $4k. If you only got $1500 in the late 90s, I don't feel so bad. It seems they blew up in the last few years. Even the DSY and SP colors get $2k+ these days.
So long ago, can't remember who I got it from or who bought it from me, although I recall it being shipped back to the States, so it's back over there somewhere. £1500 British, would have been around the 2k mark in US$ back then. I sold a Rootbeer Jem around the same time for £1100 (a photo of the two together exists). Always knew the golden era of Ibanez would start creeping up in value, but the retail price points these days are batshit crazy!
I had a reissue floral....lol inside the monkey grip there was some kind thing that stuck out and was covered in the paint. Drove me crazy like a pimple would. I was always picking at it
Hello Pixxy, I believe Bobby deserves a cameo appearance. He has consistently supplied numerous awesome axes for your consumption. Please consider bringing Bobby on. Thanks!
conradovai: I actually got the last one from them. Some how they found one and posted it one a week ago, 02/19 and I saw it and thought it was a mistake, so I called them and confirmed it was legit and new, and snatched it up. It was not a restock either, so I have no idea how or where they found it. Must have been misplaced in their huge fucking warehouse. Seems to be an early one too as the serial is F1703280. Got it OTD under 3k so I was definitely pleased. To me it is a nostalgia piece and not a collectors piece. I have played it everyday since I got it.
I'd love a basic walkthrough of your recording software. I've never used my pc as an amp and I like the sound you get. also, for streaming, how much bandwidth do you use use up?
i want to get an Ibanez, but I cant walk well so ,im not going to the store to check them out I was just wondering my favorite neck is the thin charvel one but wider and low strings right on top of frets (9's) how is the necks and can you go over because i was always scared of breaking the neck using the tremola so i used it sparingly , can a neck get weaker using the tremola and can you break the tremola or neck using it
Steve vie is from Buffalo I seen him play at the emany lounge before he was famous, on Ontario st. I'm from Niagara Falls ny, it was a life time of memory's he rocked hard. your shit, is owsome. rock on😜I'm still deaf
how you play guitar is how I punch bad people that do bad things, rock on my friend, Niagara Mike God bless hard city makes hard people, steel worker for life or death
Terry brower who built gem guitars was joes partner did the monkey grip for a friend who didn't want to buy a case !!! That's how the monkey grip came too life and it was green 💚 RIP terry miss you brother !!
Yeah I checked that out. I know that basswood is a lot more common and available than other woods in Asia. Especially more so during the 80's. For the life of me I don't understand why they originally chose basswood. Even if you are under the belief that the wood doesn't really matter on a solid body electric. Basswood is still a shitty wood in that it's a soft that dents very easily.
They chose it because it's light, making for a comfortable instrument, it's easy to machine, and it sounds good. It does get banged up relatively easily, so you have to be a little more careful with it, but there's nothing wrong with it. I have three RGs and a Jem. The Jem and one RG is basswood. Another RG is mahogany and another is ash. They all sound similar. My basswood RG 550 is actually the outlier, sounding more noticeably different than any of the others. It's brighter, which is probably down to the maple fretboard and maple neck. The ash RG (maple fretboard) is a little bit brighter than the other two, but it's not a huge difference.
At a Good Price! I'm Happy with My JEM Jr. The Design is What Kicks Ass! Good Players Make a Tuna Can Sound Good....Ask Jose' Feliciano...With Rubber Bands for Strings!....LOL.....Love The Show!
I never did like the Jem. Don't like the crazy colors, guess I'm boring, lol. Used to play many other Ibanez guitars and still own quite a few but they just sit there. Been playing Caparison guitars these days and they are my very favorite!
I love your videos man I just subscribed a week ago and aftert his video im really into your channel I love hoe you talk about guitars and stuff and you can tell when you really like something it almost feels like your talkingnwith friends on your videos and thats really nice because it pulls you in and makes you feel like your involved something about your videos man there great keep it up
Interesting bit of info you gave here. Loved the story too! I doubt that i will ever get a chance to own one though. I'm not a great player but i really think that i would love one of these. I'm not too keen on the Vine Inlay (although i wouldn't turn one down) but i do like the Disappearing Pyramids. My fav color is prob the Black/Green or the Root Beer one with the original Monkey Grip, but they don't do those colors anymore (DY is killer too). I didn't even know they made any JEM's in the Black/Green combo until recently. I really like the OG Edge bridge the best but i could totally deal with a Lo-Pro Edge as well if i found a later model. Awesome vid and you seem like your a great player as well!!
Hi PixxyLixxx, great review as always, but If I were you , I would have kept the JEM you owned. Specially if you took all that trouble getting Steve Vai's autograph and preserved it. I guess I'm a keeper kind of guitarist, the guitars that I buy, stay with me forever. I understand many guitarist don't. I guess it's the hunt that thrills you more than the prey. But still, If I were you, I would have kept that great guitar. Greetings from Mexico City. Rock on dude! \../
pixxy ? I'm in the process of buying a fender Mexican Stratocaster Roadhouse what would my best options be of buying a fender made from Mexico can't afford a USA fender. you no your gear man. Can you give me some evice. troyster
why 'Loch Ness green' ? for starters, the water is black because of the steep pitch sides, the visibility under water being as good as zero. and you know there is no monster! and if there was, it would be better camouflaged just being silly, [but where does the green idea come from?] ;~)
My second guitar teacher (my first one quit teaching me because it wasn't Gods will) was so cool in that all I had was an acoustic guitar and he had 2 beautiful Ibanez Jem's. one was blue and the other neon pink.
Fernando Passos - my RG3550 HSH positions 1 and 4 are split too, but mixed with the single coil PUP.
Don't you mean positions 2 and 4? If so, yes that's what I mean't too, the humbuckers are coil-split and combined with middle pickup.
Fernando Passos - yep, meant 2&4..
So yea, that's exactly what I meant when I said "dual single-coily strat sound". Positions 2 and 4 have the middle pickup + one coil of each humbucker respectively.
Fernando Passos - ok, I'm slow..
The green ones are worth the most. Nice.
If i ever hit a lotto win i will hunt down number 117 and personally deliver it man , no matter how many times i hear this story it always makes me wish you had that guitar \m/
fantastic video. So I need one of these right? lol
+Phillip McKnight Yes. Yes, you do. 😂
PixxyLixxx it sucks because I want pink, but money wise it makes since to buy the green. They should have staggered the prices. 3k for pink and yellow. and 3.5k for green.

You need one. B)
same i need one too
👆🏻👏🏻
These Jem's are incredibly versatile guitars, you can play blues, funk and even jazz on one -with a credible tone- they are that good. FAR more than just a shredding metal guitar. I have a 1991 777 DY.
I have one, and is an awesome guitar! The Green is really beauty and special, under an UV Light looks great!
I bought my floral JEM 77FP in 1987 (Steve Vai's living room curtains applied to the body and coated with a clear coat) I believe I paid $1200 for it, but had to wait something like 7 months for it. I still have it.
Guitarburt amazing let me buy it 🤑🤑🤑
Ordered mine at the end of February, got the email last night saying it was finally in the country and at the store...
Looks fantastic! Sorry for your loss pixxy Awesome deal you got back then. Life rocks on! so many guitars! (smiley face)
What do you recommend for cleaning the fretboard on the jem 777? Thanks in advance
Nice pinch harmonic technique you got ..i love using those when shredding

Nice video, that green color surely bring that 80's sound

That’s a very cool guitar. I never thought about how difficult it is to get a good paint job on the inside of the handle.
Can't wait for you to get it back again and play it more.
I dreamed and dreamed of those when I was a kid. I'd get one now just for nostalgia, but I can't play those Wizard necks any more since I've been playing fatty necks for the last 20 years. Super sweet guitar!

That particular specimen is a good sounding one.

Great story,man...bet They fired that kid's arse the minute you walked out of their store..
Dude that’s insane. I’m jealous lol... like REALLY jealous. Glad you got your hands on it for such a smoking deal!
Haha!, great story, and even better deal!!!!...what was the going price for those back then?
I remeber you getting that 777. Is the kramer you traded the one that you slollopped out the fret board on????
I had one in desert sun yellow for 20 years..sorry I sold it but still have an awesome black ibanez n custom made ESP..The yellow one I had like that I paid 1000$ in 1987 in long island NY.Glass inlays were awsome,6 scalloped frets up high..awsome
Man that sucks, having to sell one of those, with an autograph and all.... well, sadly sacrifices have to be made in life...
The first run of JEM777, all 777 guitars autographed by Steve in the factory.
You plonka, they worth loads now , but like you said needs must .I would have gone homeless before I sold a green 80s vai., just saying
I literally JUST bought 2 guitars and I have the urge to buy this! SOMEONE SEND ME TO REHAB! It sounds absolutely incredible.
Bad ass guitar. I wonder if these will go up in value the way the old ones did.
they will but not as much as the old ones
hah! That's my photo of the #117 LNG. Bought it mid 90s, shipped it back to England. Sold it in the late 90s for around 1500, so not thousands! but I guess the next guy did. Note the white knobs, as I was waiting for some replacements. Funny hearing you say 117 and then that photo popping up

try also the 432 hz tuning instead of the 440=A4.... Awesome !!! great job !!!
Hello Pixxy,
I believe Bobby deserves a cameo appearance.
He has consistently supplied numerous awesome axes for your consumption.
Please consider bringing Bobby on.
Thanks!
Is that Maxxas in the background with the Jem and the Strat?
I got the last green one from sweetwater at a super deal price!! So happy!! Great vid!
conradovai: I actually got the last one from them. does the trem stay in tune I've always had a problem with the Ibanez trems
Awesome do you love the 5 fret ?just kiddin rock on man
I still own #7. Steve had to sign it now 3 times lol.
This past time my guitar repair guy put a transparent covering on it that you cannot even notice

What is the Green Guitar Pick you are using ???
Beauty guitar! Love it
What effects brand/sofware you are using?
I can't remember, but weren't they NOT supposed to ever re-release the green? I could be thinking of something entirely different though.
I'd love a basic walkthrough of your recording software. I've never used my pc as an amp and I like the sound you get. also, for streaming, how much bandwidth do you use use up?
i want to get an Ibanez, but I cant walk well so ,im not going to the store to check them out I was just wondering my favorite neck is the thin charvel one but wider and low strings right on top of frets (9's) how is the necks and can you go over because i was always scared of breaking the neck using the tremola so i used it sparingly , can a neck get weaker using the tremola and can you break the tremola or neck using it
Wished Ibanez would release a cheaper RG in these colors w/ the pyramid inlays.. Like a Rg 350 version
That color is just pure magic

Do you buy all these guitars?
Terry brower who built gem guitars was joes partner did the monkey grip for a friend who didn't want to buy a case !!!
That's how the monkey grip came too life and it was green 💚 RIP terry miss you brother !!
ok..is the frame of your eyeglasses the exact color as the guitar ? great vid as usual Steve!
What's up dude
Have you tried the new amplitube fender collection?
Thoughts on it?
Found a hidden jem sc420 made in japan and it play amazing, check it out. They go for 150-300
I wonder if they dipped the bodies in paint vs spraying them. 🤔
Was is a coincidence that inside of your glasses match the guitar? lol. Also what an amazing guitar. Thanks for posting this.
wow..amazing video quality. looking good! what camera are you using currently?
What's the body made of?
fred flinstone it's probably wood. pretty sure.
I'm talking what kind of wood, you plebeian.
fred flinstone ugh. BASSwood. sorry!
P.S. Hello from San Francisco.....
are you plugged into an amp or an interface?
I never did like the Jem. Don't like the crazy colors, guess I'm boring, lol. Used to play many other Ibanez guitars and still own quite a few but they just sit there. Been playing Caparison guitars these days and they are my very favorite!
Awesome! Was that a Commodore 128 or a Amiga 500? :D
+Mehmet Ulas A500! And a Hewlett-Packard Deskjet 500 under all the disks.
👋 missed a few live shows now! When's the next t-shirt run ?
i wish they kept the "disappearing pyramid" style neck on the new jemjrsp's
Ahhhh....and thought you got it back somehow.....
My god, what an instrument.
Almost bought the yellow one then saw a black rg760 next to it. Black was $650 usd mint Yellow Jem was abit more but less than a grand.
Check out the axe it’s swift

Epic guitar man!!!!! :D Wish I had the money to buy one....
Always wanted one of those.....
I miss the 80's/90's music scene :(
Interesting bit of info you gave here. Awesome vid and you seem like your a great player as well!!
young Steve looks like Mac Demarco
Mac doesn't know his dad very well. He probably is his dad.
Awesome Git.
Does Bobby have more guitars than you? It sure seems that way :)
Really outdid your self aquisition complete!
I wanted one of the originals so bad but I was still in the military back then and they were way out of my price range.
Diego Lòpez Lira
All the original green Jems got Vai's signature on it, with a number till 777 (end of the production run).
I H8 Floyds but would make an exception for this 🤔
I used to be a huge Ibanez fan owning over 70 of them but never liked or could get into JEM's.
Sweet .... I only want just one...
I think Vai's swirl might be a little more expensive
I really miss selling my 91' HM Strat & 89' Kramer Imperial
I have an Ibanez S370. Fuck those middle pick ups always getting in the way. I'll never buy another guitar with 3 pick ups again.
Shouldn't be so bummed out about it Steve
I remember those!
Ei pixxylixxx, very nice guitar :) I will buy this legendary guitar, for me will be a Dream, green:) the hope colour, and inspiration colour 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I have an RG4EX1 in blue flame AND iI LOVE IT!!! No Need to buy a JEM.
Review one of those......(Please)
pixxy ? I'm in the process of buying a fender Mexican Stratocaster Roadhouse what would my best options be of buying a fender made from Mexico can't afford a USA fender. you no your gear man. Can you give me some evice. troyster
why 'Loch Ness green' ?
for starters,
the water is black because of the steep pitch sides,
the visibility under water being as good as zero.
and
you know there is no monster! and if there was, it would be better camouflaged
just being silly,
[but where does the green idea come from?]
;~)
Who's the handsome guy at 8.53?
To be honest, i tend to prefer your grape ice rg560's sound to that jem"s sound.
Wish I had one!
