The original Hulk idea was that Banner transformed at night and was a Jeckly/Hyde allegory. It was later changed to his heart rate going so high, and then his anger, and there are plenty of times in which he just transforms at will. It seems that each persona of the Hulk has its own triggers but Banner passes from one to the next without stopping without one for long. Also, as a former gas station employee, I've had people drive off without taking the pump out of the car, override the auto-shutoff and then complained that they overfilled their car and spilled gas everywhere, people regularly steal gas, the list goes on. It isn't hard, the problem is that all customers, myself included, are insanely stupid.

That short tirade about pumping gas in New Jersey is the kind of stuff that makes me watch this Channels content so habitually. Already another great episode
I love how they work together when making jokes and go along with it all in like with the Delbert license plates Simpson reference. Man true bro relationship goals
This book is the first series I've followed as it's released from the beginning. I'm so glad it's made it on to the show. Today has been a pretty crappy day and this is the best thing to lift my spirits
We have a Lovecraftian Hulk here (except Lovecraft would be rolling in his grave knowing the Hulk with his non-white, green skin is our hero) who's dealing with a metaphysical door created as a byproduct of Gamma Radiation which has ties to actually Satan... But the truly horrifying thing that's blowing everyone's mind is that we can't pump our own gas here in Jersey.
Being completely fair, Bruce Banner is the perfect lovecraft protagonist. White Male coming from a economically decent family, somewhere on the east coast, who is also a psychological mess due to a history of child abuse and being haunted by an other worldly horror birthed from his own body. Now he wanders, a fugitive from the law as he seeks the only thing that can help him, pumping his own gas in New Jersey, for only then will his soul be truly at rest. The rest basically writes itself.
I don't think Howard would have an issue with Hulk being green necessarily... Moreso the fact that he was created by two Jewish authors, that sounds more like him.
This is easily the highlight of my week, and I haven't gotten a minute into this episode lol. It's also fun to see my home state (Minnesota) be featured in Marvel book, albeit as a place where four doctors are savagely murdered by a mindless beast.
Sal's rant at 5:58 about the gas pumping was great. I've always lived in areas where you have to pump your own gas and the few places that do offer to pump gas for you charge you extra for that. But yes, there are a lot of people out there that should not be pumping their own gas let alone be driving a motor vehicle in the first place.
@@TheGotenza I know he was joking, he brought up Zoolander as an example when talking about. But there are little truths behind jokes. I cannot tell you how many times people have driven off from local gas stations without removing the pump hose first. It got so bad that one station has signs all over it saying check before you drive off.
This was such a great episode! Ben and Ethan really hit Sal with a gauntlet of Hulk questions and all of their tangents were hilarious. Also I love the lighting in the background!
Literally just started really reading Marvel this past week after having been just reading DC for about 5 years and this is one of the books I looked at going to pick up this morning. Timing could not be any more creepily coincidental
I think the best thing about Immortal Hulk is that they managed to find a new angle for the Hulk while still staying true to everything that's come before. It seems like it shouldn't be able to happen anymore, but every once in a while there's something like this that works. I've been meaning to get around to it, and now I think I will.
Comic Idea: on the run and in need of money, Bruce Banner use his gama radiation degree to make “gama meth” with the help of Rick Jones in a Mobil home, call it “Breaking Hulk”
Immortal Hulk is so good, and Sal you're absolutely right, I wasn't a big Hulk fan before (I liked the character but didn't really check out any Hulk stories beyond the Planet Hulk movie) but man, Immortal Hulk actually makes me want to go back and read some more Hulk stories Also the art is just phenomenal, I love how body-horrory the Hulk transformations get later on in the run

If I'm not mistaken, he also transformed by night in his first appearance. Lee and Ditko didn't quite know what to do with him yet, so every other issue they'd change his transformation. Parts of this sound similar to the Bill Bixby Hulk TV show, including the aimless wandering and a "nosey reporter" after the Hulk. (Who I think was also called McGee.)
So happy to see a book I’m currently reading featured on Back Issues! I’m in love with this book, it’s an amazing run of the Hulk. I’ve never been one for the Jade Giant, but this book has made a True Believer out of me!
I like the idea of the immortal hulk not being a killer. It makes sense in a way that an immortal who has chosen to be judge, jury, but not executioner for the dammned. Why would he view death as a punishment, something that will forever be denied him, something he can only briefly experience before he is brought back to his mortal coil, assuming there is anything to experience at all. After a time, life itself would seem the much crueler curse, and thus a horrible one full of pain is a more befitting punishment to those he judges.
FINAALLLYYYY! My fave marvel book and hulk books in a long time! I was waiting for you guys to cover this book, and hopefully the rest of this series! Your reactions and commentary is priceless!
Gotta say I am loving this book. I liked the beginning best, when it is more like a good horror comic (kinda reminded me of swamp thing back in the day), and wasn't wrapping in continuity and other marvel universe characters. I hadn't seen read any of the events you said we needed to know....but I had watched the back issues.
The character McGee in this book is also a reference/based on the character Jack McGee from the old Hulk TV show with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. He was also a reporter who was on the Hulk's trail throughout the midwest
Rarely is there an episode of Back Issues where I've already read the arc (patiently waiting for Mister Miracle) so this was a nice treat. Immortal Hulk might be my favorite Marvel book right now. It's up there with Miles Morales and Daredevil.
The hulk personas, include Classic savage hulk, Grey Joe fix it hulk, Professor hulk, which is hulk with Bruce’s intelligence, Green scar the planet hulk era hulk, Doc green which is Bruce in hulk’s body if I remember right, The devil/ current immortal hulk, and evil secret empire hulk that is currently in the subconscious prison that immortal hulk use to be in.
It's been a few months since Immortal Hulk concluded. I wonder if you guys will ever cover the other nine volumes. It's one of my favorite runs in the Hulk's history. I would love to see you guys talk about the story and how it grows larger and larger!
38:39 I would love if this show started sprinkling in random memes and gifs as their referenced. Maybe some movie clips too if they're not legally trouble-enducing
20:57 I love the brief history Sal goes through about Bruce Banner as a person before he even became The Hulk it's a very sad history for him and it's pretty insane and fucked up as well
I'm not the biggest Hulk fan, but I loved Planet Hulk and I'm loving Immortal Hulk. I actually have to give Benny at Comicstorian for getting me into Immortal.
Ive watched this video a couple times now (i like hulk and really like this hulk story big green guy smash 🤷♂️) and i just picked up on sal saying he killed his dad adds even more to this WICKED run
What Sal said when Ethan asked him if it makes sense and he says the thing about metaphysical doorways and chicanery in gamma rays then yeah it totally makes sense. Was the funniest thing I heard all day thank you guys
I’ve read the first 10 issues in the first over size hardcover and I wanted to get the rest but they’ve been long out of print so I gave away the first hardcover so I can get the omnibus cause I really wanna get it
@@TevyaSmolka yea and from what I’ve seen how that Omni looks like it is a monster of a book heh which is perfect for the Hulk but still it is huge it’s like 1600 pages long
It's a shame you guys didn't get further into this book. Next issue he fights The avengers has that famous line where he says that's my secret I'm already dead. And then you have the fight with absorbing man where they cut the hulk into pieces and put them into jars. I like hulk from before with planet hulk and world war Hulk but immortal hulk really hooked me on the character. It's a shame that they cut this version of the hulk short.
Hey guys big fan I was watching your video on Sandman and Sal said you’d do Grant Morrison’s Animal Man and that was a few years ago and I’m still keepin my crossed 🤞
Ben: That's IGN. What are they doing reviewing comics?

I’m shocked that Sal didn’t bring up the fact that this book is outselling Batman the last few months.
I laughed when I heard that! I find immortal Hulk more entertaining than Tom King's Batman anyway
It’s the best selling comic series rn isn’t it? That’s what I heard. Hulk hasn’t been best selling in YEARS

Bruce's father had abused him and his mother eventually killing her planting the hidden-away pocket of rage that would become the Hulk As David wound their way through throwbacks to horror comic origins emotional drama and nuclear allegory the guiding concept was revealed Banner had serious emotional problems and an intense personality disorder and like all of us he had to deal with it and the Greg Pak run mainly planet hulk and world war hulk and with a very dark horror disaster thriller body horror monster found footage movie feel with fuck loads of jump scares and Mark Millars ultimate hulk with the idea of him being a villainous menace with a homicidal like rage and is shown to be unhinged lewd sadistic violent ruthless and very very cannibalistic you know when He often eats the remains of his opponents and is more of a murderer and the savage hulk from 616 and the Mindless Hulk and the worldbreaker hulk no one should be able to fuck with the hulk even if they kick his ass he comes back for revenge and goes besurker with blood thirst savage gorrila like rage like a loose cannon and i would want it to be an NC-17 rated or in australia r18+ rated with lots of body horror just scary as all fuck like the hulk should be and the idea of what hulk 2 was gonna be before it was canceled it was gonna focus on Bruce Banner's epic struggle with his inner demons, resulting in the emergence of an evil, gray-hued Hulk and It was on gonna be set on a Native American reservation and it was all about radioactivity and it was really political i wanted to see that so badly hulk is a character I reckon should be dark like daredevil punisher and batman and very horror like i want the hulk to be scary as fuck again frightening as fuck not this stupid fucking steve urkul glasses wearing shrek looking motherfucker
Omg the Walter Langkowski/Bradley Cooper/roommate/journal tangent made me audibly & actually LAUGH OUT LOUD, no lol needed! Kudos gentlemen! 🤣😂🤣
53:19 How did he do that sound so perfectly XD
The fact that Sal knows the indie movie Swiss Army Man and references it happily-Sal you’re my hero. Enjoy some popcorn!
'magic is just science we dont understand or fuckin whatever" lol ethan always cracks me up
I like the idea of the immortal hulk not being a killer.
Read the series to see if he never kills
DO MORE IMMORTAL HULK PLEASE!!!!
FINAALLLYYYY! My fave marvel book and hulk books in a long time! I was waiting for you guys to cover this book, and hopefully the rest of this series! Your reactions and commentary is priceless!
I like that the interior artwork by Joe Bennett is just as impressive as the covers.
Man, I love this book. And the reactions from the guys were both expected and incredibly funny to me.
Also, that "A Star is Born" tirade tho...
Part of me really wants a video of just all the times Ethan tells us that's not how something works all clipped together
New Jersey Gas tangent , Bradley Cooper Tangent, and they were roommates vine , this episode is probably my favorite lmaoooo
Can we get some more of this book? Maybe one more episode resuming the other volumes?
The character McGee in this book is also a reference/based on the character Jack McGee from the old Hulk TV show with Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. He was also a reporter who was on the Hulk's trail throughout the midwest
Rarely is there an episode of Back Issues where I've already read the arc (patiently waiting for Mister Miracle) so this was a nice treat. Immortal Hulk might be my favorite Marvel book right now. It's up there with Miles Morales and Daredevil.
I'm glad this came out the day after I bought the trade. I was really confused yesterday of how the Hulk works now. Thank you Sal and the gang!
Serious Insidious vibes. Especially with the door concept.
Is it confirmed that this immortal Hulk is the devil persona?
Someone who comments on youtube videos later issues Bruce does call it the “devil” hulk
I'm loving Immortal Hulk, favorite run since Peter David.
You guys add a lot of depth & relevancy to your podcast I enjoy hearing your podcast. I think you guys should write a immortal hulk 1shot
Please do more of the immortal hulk. This episode was awesome 👏
Hahaha Hahaha that "leave the journal open bit" had me dying 🤣🤣🤣
Lol am I the only one who envisioned a Hulk version of the movie Roadhouse when they were talking about him working at bars?
I honestly can't believe Sal put that meme in here but i fucking laughed out loud, that was great
Love this! Immortal hulk’s my favorite new series! Hope to see more of it on the couch on the future
The Immortal Hulk, probably the best thing Marvel has going on right now. So happy to see it covered here!
The journal bit killed me! You guys are too funny
Ive watched this video a couple times now (i like hulk and really like this hulk story big green guy smash 🤷♂️) and i just picked up on sal saying he killed his dad adds even more to this WICKED run
“& they were roommates” made me shit myself laughing!
"That's not how radiation works, but okay" - ComicPOP out that on the next trade
What Sal said when Ethan asked him if it makes sense and he says the thing about metaphysical doorways and chicanery in gamma rays then yeah it totally makes sense. Was the funniest thing I heard all day thank you guys
The last Hulk book I've read was the World War Hulk book, but great review. I'll pick this up
I love immortal hulk such a amazing series.
Same
@@cheeseburgerfreddy6350 indeed
I’ve read the first 10 issues in the first over size hardcover and I wanted to get the rest but they’ve been long out of print so I gave away the first hardcover so I can get the omnibus cause I really wanna get it
@@alejandrogonzalez00 I can understand that
@@TevyaSmolka yea and from what I’ve seen how that Omni looks like it is a monster of a book heh which is perfect for the Hulk but still it is huge it’s like 1600 pages long
It's a shame you guys didn't get further into this book.
Immortal Hulk is such a great story man
I cannot believe you guys already did Immortal Hulk, and I did not even notice :0
Comicstorian did a video on this that I didnt watch. But I noticed it was three seconds short exactly which was weird. Either way great episode !
Excellent Wrath of Khan reference!
10/10 back issues
would recommend
New and I think this show is great, you guys are like the RLM of comic books
Loved the Odd Couple reference.
Speaking of old school TV, Jack McGee was the name of the reporter that followed the Hulk in the TV show.
Love that the book had all those Lou Ferrigno tv series incredible hulk references
21:07
Wait, when did that happen?
Bruce Banner's origin is messed up than I thought.
Old retcon from the 80d
It was during Peter David’s Hulk run in the late 80s to 90s
I’ve seen a lot of good reviews about this book I’m glad you guys are covering it!
This is the third good thing to come out of Civil War 2.
Eli DEVITT what were the other 2?
@@petemarqdadon
Avengers No Surrender and War Of The Realms.
Hope you continue doing the immortal hulk cause it just keeps getting good
ComicPOP coming in clutch
I LOVE this episode just for the New Jersey/gas pump bit alone! 😂 I felt the exact same way the first time I left the state 😝
... This was a really good refresher. This is all still relevant, BTW. Holy crap is this story good.
More of immortal hulk pls!
I was so hoping for Metal, but this was actually really, really good!
Hey guys big fan I was watching your video on Sandman and Sal said you’d do Grant Morrison’s Animal Man and that was a few years ago and I’m still keepin my crossed 🤞
Agreed! I wanna see it
Once you mentioned Magee. I immediately thought , " don't make me angry Mr.Magee, you won't like me when I'm angry. " classic hulk quote
“That was a tangent.” lol
You guys are the best!
I have loved Ewing since Loki Agent of Asgard, which was freaking great
That scene in Zoolander haunted me for years. Before I got my license, filling up the tank was a terrifying endeavor.
Gonna hold off on watching this week because I really wanna read this soon and I don’t wanna get spoiled before I do
ComicPOP called you out. Your move, Lady Gaga.
