As a teacher who is very passionate about his subject, the 25th minute of this video resonates so very well with me. High School science teacher Pete was, for me, the best year of Peter Parker.
Peter being a teacher is progression of Peter Parker's character instead of regression, by making him a photojournalist again- although content is still writable with this path- or making him another businessman in a universe full of businessmen (the Dan Slott era). I think Peter being a teacher is proper progression, and if bundled with him- say- teaching younger superheroes how to be spectacular, could resonate well with the reader.
Because they either really liked Morlun and wanted to do their own story with the character or editorial made a decision and lumped the writers with him.
JMS' run on Spider-Man is easily the best Spider-Man run after the original Stan Lee/Steve Ditko/John Romita sr. one and it is the perfect prove for more mature and married Peter Parker, with a steady job, still being interesting.
It is also really dope that the son of John Romita sr. is the artist, I love the passing the torch part od the family, both of their artwork for spidey, is just magnificent
One thing I appreciate about this run is that JMS isn’t t telling to believe that Peter was destined to be Spider-Man. Peter himself is skeptical. Just because there’s a mystical elements doesn’t change the reason why Peter does what he does etc
I loved the moment in The Other where T'Challa is planning a sightseeing trip for Peter while they wait on results in Wakanda and he mentions that there's a highly regarded temple to the god of tricksters and spiders that Peter might enjoy seeing. Only for Peter to go "Sure, can't be worse than the last time I was in a spider god temple and almost got sacrificed" just as they land. T'Challa right away goes "Oh, that might happen here as well. Let's do something else instead" while in the shadows of the temple door someone stands looking right at Peter.
JMS' run on Spider-Man was the last run of comics that I actually collected. I hate to keep harping on this over the years, but OMD killed my desire to read ASM (honestly comics in general) that still to this day, I only will read trades. That being said, this run on Spider-Man was honestly up there with the first 100 issues of Ultimate Spider-Man. So many cool changes to Peter, yet felt like it worked perfectly. I also loved Roger Stern's run too. I'm a sucker for Hobgoblin stories.
I personally never liked the whole WEB OF LIFE thing. This is why when I read Spider-Man, I read Ultimate Spider-Man the most. Spider-Man is just a guy who was bitten by a radioactive spider. SHORT, SWEET and SIMPLE. Original Marvel.
OMG. This is it. The best Spider-Man run alongside BMB's Ultimate Spider-Man. JMS LITERALLY got me hooked back on comics when i had a falling out with them in general. It's soo cool Sal had a similar experience. I only physically collect and conserve classic issues, and the entire JMS and JR jr run is literally right now on a shelf overseing my bed. Fuck One More Day
I love how Sal's relationship with Babylon Five is the same as mine. Finding out JMS created it and thinking "you mean that show I see commercials for that I never watch." And then continues to never watch it.
I absolutely adore the early part of this run I’m rereading it now. I think Straczynski perfectly understands how to write a mature Peter Parker. Peter being a teacher is PERFECT
Been looking forward to this Spider-Man run for a long time. I giggled when Ethan figured out this was were the spider-totem and morlun stuff came from.
I hope that you guys definitely do the conversation story arc which I think involves the 9/11 issue which to me is one of the most somber stories to tell during that horrific time in our lives
This is brilliant. Sal's heel turn is four years in the making... "We all hated The Other, right? Well, let's talk about a story I like... that sets up The Other!"
a y e e e shoutout to the comicpop crew for straight laughs during these late night shifts slowly making wednsday my favorite day of the week lmao keep it up! 🔥💕
Me at the beginning: finally, my most anticipated episode, he’s finally going to talk about Aunt May and Peter conversation about him being Spider-Man... At the end: awwwweeee man, more waiting, booooo 😅😅 Still a great episode and very fun, can’t wait for the next JMS Spider-Man episode 👍
One of my favorite Spider-Man runs covered by my favorite comic book channel? Yes please, sorry school paper you have to take a back seat, because we have some more important things here.
I get Sal's having a bit of fun with the whole Creator of Babylon 5 stuff. But to be fair, Babylon 5 created the 5 year story structure that virtually every show uses now a days. Lost and Battlestar creators have said that they copied B5's structure when ploting and pitching their series. Ronald D. Moore even sent Battlestar Galactica's pilot script to BMS to get his advice about doing a yearly story arc. Sure, B5 borrowed a lot from Star Trek, but it's what they did different, namely having a continuous story that pays elements off from season one in season five, that cemented their place in so many fans' heart. Honestly, I thought Sal's comments were pretty funny, I just wanted to gush about my one of my all time favorite shows.
I love the JMS run on Spider-Man. It was the first Spider-Man thing that I had read since I was a teenager (and quit cuz the clone saga) and I only read it about 8 years ago. It is one of the things that got me back into comics, and even though there are rough spots, I still love it until the end.
Thank you for doing this episode it's seriously is one of my favorite storylines in Amazing Spider-Man as a huge Spider-Man fan I didn't jump away during all that bad stuff before JMS took over so when they finally got the JMS and his story it was welcomed
Awesome episode Sal you out did yourself in explaining this this series of Spider-Man I’m actually surprised and glad to hear your opinion on this story keep up the great work and can’t wait for the next ultimate Spider-Man episode
This is one of the best Spider-man Runs ever J. Michael Straczynski knows Spider-man and Peter Parker and even his supporting characters are written so well, As someone who doesn't read comics that much i actually finished this run on Spider-man and thoroughly enjoyed it. The only other Spider-man runs i enjoyed is Ultimate Spider-man But this series is just so good i would even go as far as to say in the top 2s. You gotta do the Conversation soon its amazing. Thanks for introducing this series.
I'm Rewatching my favorite back issues episodes. This and Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man are still my 2 favorite Spider-man runs. They came out the right time for this 12 year old kid who just saw the Rami movie, always loved Spider-man since the fox cartoon, and wanted more Spider-man. I got the best of both worlds. The teenage Peter Parker in the 2000s and the main continuity with classic characters being written amazingly like real people.
Those early JMS runs were captivating.. still enjoy reading them. The Conversation was great and Happy Birthday had me sobbing through the final pages. JMS & JRJR together created something really special for me..AND DIRECTLY AFTER was when the wheels fell off! -.-
I have been waiting forever for this! I have the whole JMS Spider-Man run in trades and it's one of my favorites. I know it was one of Sal's favorites too and I was very curious to hear his thoughts on the run. I loved this episode and I am eagerly awaiting the next installment!
I loved the JMS run back in the day, too. I'd checked out of Spider-Man for the Howard Mackie years but I was all on board for JMS... right up until the end. Then I jumped ship again 'till Superior Spider-Man.
I LOVE this story SOOOOOOOOO much!!!! The Aunt May story about her finding out Peter's secret identity, and the one about Pete and MJ getting back together/saving Dr. Doom at the airport still makes me cry. I also don't have a problem with the retcon. In a world where Dr. Doom, Dr. Strange, Dormammu, Mephisto, Dracula, Ghost Rider, etc. exist and are a thing, I can accept an African Spider God guiding a spider (who is most likely to survive being irradiated) into the middle of an experiment (which does just that), and then guides the (now irradiated) spider to someone most likely to get powers from a bite from this particular irradiated spider (and not get sick or even die), and the rest is history. Now I know most people would call this too convenient (SAL). I always respond to that with "Well tell that to King Arthur" who is also a thing in the 616, and that's good enough for me.
Man I just watched the last Saga episode and you can really tell the camera upgrade here. Btw I’m ready for you guys to do Saga 4 whenever you’re ready....
Funny story about this book. I was supposed to get vol1 of the series for Christmas. Sadly the sellers on amazon, screwed it up and I never got it. I plan on getting it digital since hard copy’s are pretty hard to find.
Morlun is what's called an incubus. Definitely going to get into J Michael straczynski run. There is some potential to give him a good final send-off and undo one more day in one storyline. Great job guys.
No inccubi in mythology are demons who have sex with sleeping women, the male equivalent of succubi, I'm pretty sure in Marvel both feed on sex and are a bit less rapey, seducing their victims instead and looking sexy rather than hideous. Morlun is a psychic vampire, one of a family called The Inheritors. He isn't a demon and isn't trying to sleep with Spider-Man, that would be a very different story.
The Next Spiderman Book has to be the next part of the story this is just some of the best Spiderman period. Any way the Radiation totally should be retconned into Gamma Radiation
Buy this comic: amzn.to/2G6oxjm
Oh my Christ. No wonder why Morlun is a totemic enemy of Spider-Man. Morlun represents _clones!_ The natural killer of spiders!
Just Some Guy with a Mustache I love this comment. Needed to leave more than just a like.
Not until spider verse though
@@FringeSpectre Me? I'm just some guy...with a mustache.

The most dangerous type of "Some Guy".
This needs more likes😆🤣🤣🤣
"Quality over continuity" should be on the next ComicPop shirt, that's a great line
I'd buy that.
I’d love that shirt. The line is brilliant.
Or the next topic for the podcast if they haven't covered it yet
put everyones face on it
Make this a shirt. That's such a good line!
Ah yes another one of my favorite Sal-ism’s, saying “creator of Babylon five” EVERY time he mentions JMS
The episodes of the Ghostbusters cartoon he wrote always get overlooked in favor of Babylon 5.
he's Dick Grayson, age 12
@@FutBoy281
Babylon, age 5
Ben looks like if captain america went full sellout like BoosterGold
I now need this story where a Guy buys the Captain America IP, gets altered like USAgent and sells the fuck out
I think it's a South African rugby jearsey
BoosterGold is a god
I have the same shirt in my profile picture, but it's only the Winder Soilder version
That's good stuff
Ethan's reaction to the revelation of the plot is absolutely perfect and made me laugh very hard.
I love how the first 6 minutes are just a history lesson on all the bs Spider-Man was put through from 1997 to 2001
Oh man I didn't realize all that happened within 4 years 😬
As a teacher who is very passionate about his subject, the 25th minute of this video resonates so very well with me. High School science teacher Pete was, for me, the best year of Peter Parker.
Same.
Not teacher but I always wanted to see more of high school teacher Pete
I now understand what comedians must feel when you spend all that time preparing material, and having it bomb.
I like the "move the car George" moments. They're fun.
"I'm talking about an energy vampire, SOMETHING REAL!"
god I loved that moment and still do to this day
Morlun works very effectively as a one-off villain. I really don't understand why other writers keep bringing him back.
Because they either really liked Morlun and wanted to do their own story with the character or editorial made a decision and lumped the writers with him.
George is my favorite Spider-Man supporting character
George was the best of us
This is a book that's been brought up and referenced throughout all of back issues history. cant wait to get through this one.
If Morlun is anything like Morbius, then all Spidey needed to do was knock him into the water and let him be eaten by sharks.
JMS' run on Spider-Man is easily the best Spider-Man run after the original Stan Lee/Steve Ditko/John Romita sr. one and it is the perfect prove for more mature and married Peter Parker, with a steady job, still being interesting.
Couldn’t agree more.
TheWolverine1987 Absolutely!
It is also really dope that the son of John Romita sr. is the artist, I love the passing the torch part od the family, both of their artwork for spidey, is just magnificent
I THOUGHT YOU SAID YOU LIKE THIS BOOK
14:50 Ethan knows what's up
"HOW CAN YOU LIKE THIS?!" 🤣🤣🤣
I hope for Insomniacs sequel to Spider-Man Peter becomes a teacher
One thing I appreciate about this run is that JMS isn’t t telling to believe that Peter was destined to be Spider-Man. Peter himself is skeptical. Just because there’s a mystical elements doesn’t change the reason why Peter does what he does etc
Exactly. Ezekiel has the same powers and has no motivation to save people
I loved the moment in The Other where T'Challa is planning a sightseeing trip for Peter while they wait on results in Wakanda and he mentions that there's a highly regarded temple to the god of tricksters and spiders that Peter might enjoy seeing. Only for Peter to go "Sure, can't be worse than the last time I was in a spider god temple and almost got sacrificed" just as they land. T'Challa right away goes "Oh, that might happen here as well. I know man, to me both are the very first Spider-man series I've ever read in my life when I was a kid.
Try manga like berserk
"I've been hit harder by Morlun than I ever have by my friends."
It is stupid and I hate it
Well it ain't radioactive in Ultimate dude. It's a super spider that was given the Oz formula
"Guy who received powers from an enchanted spider" is also pretty short sweet and simple.
OMG.
He also co created She-Ra
That’s a shame, Babylon 5 was great. If you like JMS’ character work on this you’ll probably enjoy B5.
@magnusprime962 I finally got to check out an episode. meh, it's just "we got Star Trek at home"
I absolutely adore the early part of this run I’m rereading it now. I think Straczynski perfectly understands how to write a mature Peter Parker. Peter being a teacher is PERFECT

Yay! So excited for a new episode.
I am so glad today is Back Issues day.

Love the episode guys!!! Any update on when you’ll continue the next volume of ultimate Spider-Man?
I'M SCREAMING I CAN'T WAIT
Hey you better do volume 2 soon this is so good
Ben has a super rugby shirt on. Awesome
Call Galactus...great tactics Ben. Solution to all Spider-man problems, call Galactus.
Would love to see you guys tackle Warren Ellis' Authority. I really want to hear the guys discuss it.
Hell yeah Ben with the Wedding Singer joke
The beginning of of J.M.S’s run is incredible
Wish I could say the same for the rest
Yay Spider-Man peter Parker as a teacher
Man I started getting emotional when he called aunt May 😭

Yes! My favorite run!
JRJR’s Art was top notch this run. This is a definitive run for me. Up to the death of Ezekiel. Formative comics. 👍🏾

For me the golden age of JRJR is the 80's. Daredevil and X-Men looked awesome, ASM during JMS' run looked a little wonky at times for me.
