I'm grateful to live in a quiet rural town with very little light pollution. Lots of times I wake up at around 2 am to use the bathroom. If it's a beautiful starry night, I drink a little milk and gaze at the stars and hear the occasional owl. This peaceful interlude usually helps me resume my sleep.

Deep sleep becomes less frequent and dozing off in the day time becomes more of a "thing". And don't get me started on the twice - yearly switches between standard and daylight saving time.

The negative changes to sleep seen in aging adults are well known. They are all risk factors for ill health and dementia. Fight them like the plague. Avoid naps during the day unless acutely ill. Get out into sunshine and boost your adenosine. Adjust your bedtime 10 minutes per day for 6 days before the clocks change.

To anyone dealing with this. I go to sleep at 11pm. So for me 9pm comes no more phone. No more tv. I prepare my things for the next day. 10pm I'm in bed i do my 20 min meditation. Then I read till my eyes are just shutting on their own. Do this every night especially on nights where you will get to sleep in the next day. Unfortunately I have a very stressful job and if I don't do this I will wake up randomly at 3am. And I'll remember I was dreaming about work. I'll have a terrible day because I won't be able to concentrate because I'm so tired. It's a chore but it's the only thing that works for me. I know it's stress because it's peak season for me and I'm dealing with it right now.

In Eastern Medicine this specific 2-4 am wake cycle is considered a sign of "adrenal fatigue." Good basic suggestions here but for me it was important to learn about the process of healing adrenal fatigue. You wake up because the adrenals are starving. It helped me to have a small protien/carb balanced snack when I woke up in the night (like a peanut butter cracker, just a few bites) or even just before bed to prevent waking up. In Eastern Medicine the ideal time to sleep and support the healing of the adreanals is 7-9am and this helped me a lot too. Good luck to anyone out there suffering from insomnia and sleep issues. Hope maybe this helps too!

We wake up because people have always done so.
It used to be known as “first sleep” at “second sleep”. There are even old accounts that mention these terms. Sleeping eight hours at a stretch is an invention of the Industrial Revolution, when workers needed to be on the clock for their shift.
The wakefulness in between was ideal for praying, meditation, a snack- even visiting the neighbors! This last idea doesn’t go over well nowadays.

Not everyone. I go to sleep and if my insomniac husband doesn't wake me with lights on, watching videos, etc, I sleep 7/1/2 to 8 hrs solid. I have done this my whole life. Caffeine, alcohol, fatty foods, stress have zero effect. My husband has severe sleep issues as do 8 of his siblings. His grandmother, his children. It's genetic.

As I got older I found that I would get rebound insomnia from drinking alcohol. I was beyond my youthful indiscretions with alcohol and only drank moderately by the time I started having insomnia. I would fall asleep, but then I would wake up a couple hours later and then lie, exhausted but unable to sleep, until the alarm went off. If I didn't have to get up, I could get back to sleep after about 5 hours. Not good if you have to work in the morning. Not drinking fixes the issue for me.

I am 77 and can't remember ever in my life feeling wide awake and alert when I wake no matter what time it was. I struggled with school as a child because of this. I struggled with work as an adult, and it wasn't any better with a swing shift. Now at retirement, I sleep in stages. When I do wake up and can't just roll over and fall asleep again, I get up and sit and read for an hour or two or even just stay up and start my day at 4 or 5 am and take a nap latter. I don't like to take naps, though, because I have to go through this waking process twice. Once is quite enough, thank you. I have decided I don't have a circadian clock, and my older brother says the same thing. My younger brother (age 75) says he usually goes to bed at 3 am same as me, but he has never complained about actual sleep problems. So, you really lost me at "waking up refreshed." I always wake up in a fog and spend at least 15 minutes to an hour to feel awake. Sometimes it takes several hours. I liken it to warmed over death or waking from a coma. Sometimes it takes hours. I talked to several doctors over the years about this when I was younger and had to work, and they say I will probably never sleep "normal" as this is normal for me . Some wanted to drug me into oblivion which I won't do. I have no health issues or environmental issues that are causing this. I have lived in different parts of the country, so it is not where I live that's the problem. So, this is how I live; I don't like it, but I am totally used to it.

I can relate. My circadian rhythm is completely messed up and has been for the last twenty years. I work at a business that's open 24 hours a day and I work every shift. Two morning shifts, two swing shifts, and one overnight shift every week. That's if my employees stay healthy, otherwise I work additional shifts. My days off are split so I get a maximum of 32 hours off at a time. When I have those days off, I end up sleeping between 18 to 20 hours. I don't sleep through, but usually wake up for three hours before going back to sleep, and waking up after that second sleep is VERY hard no matter how much time I've slept.

That part about stress explains why most medical workers don’t sleep well. All many of us know is stress. We live with it 24/7 due to the work we do. I have to nap after a good showier after work. Otherwise I end up falling asleep in my chair or sofa. My body and brain just want to tap out after work. If only jobs I actually enjoy paid a proper living wage 😭. Then I’d have less stress and feel better.

over the past 6 months i have started waking up around 3.30am'ish quite constantly. i fall asleep at about 10pm no problem. i think it is due to too much screen time as i also read e-books in the evening. i drift awake into all sorts of cool imaginary adventures and then have to remind myself I need to go back to sleep. not perfect but the best thing i can do is count my breathing - and try to lock out all other thoughts. best solution i have found so far. but need to change my screen time routine...

I like waking up in the middle of the night, then realizing I can go back to sleep for another 3 or 4 hours. Sometimes I do have trouble going to sleep at night, but I usually go right to sleep if I wake up in the middle of the night (usually if it happens it is for a quick trip and back to the bathroom).

I am in my sixties and still employed for the reason of having a purpose, a reason to get up, someplace to go, and something to do.
I work from 0600hrs. to 1300hrs.. Not a physically or mentally demanding job. Just something simple.
I get up at 0415hrs. to be on the job at 0600hrs.
Getting up that early gives me time to take a leisurely visit to the bathroom.
Cook and eat a good healthy breakfast. (I don't smoke).
Clean up afterwards and put together a nice lunch to take to work for myself.
I rarely eat a solid dinner. Dinner usually consist of yogurt, fresh fruit, peanut butter, mixed nuts.... and I eat that around 1500hrs.
    Here's the kicker.
I get really sleepy around 1600hrs to 1700hrs and lay down to take a nap usually lasting about three hours.
I wake up and stay up till around 2330hrs. and then go back to bed and sleep all night till 0415hrs. and then start it all over again.
I am wondering about that nap I can't seem to fight off.
I'd like to stay up till about 2100hrs. after work and then go to bed once and sleep all night till 0415hrs.
But, this pattern does seem to work for me and I seem to be able to adjust it for my days off without much trouble.
Maybe I should just leave well enough alone.
Anybody got any thoughts on this?

When I wake up at that time, I go on toilett, making the best out of it. Another optimistic idea might be to go outside, but without shopping at the bakery that is not so usefull as it is still too early for that too.
A crazy but long term avoiding strategy, might be to migrate to 2 time zones in east direction, which nobody would really consider as it would be too expensive & too far away for daily travel from/to your home.

If such video already made, please anyone ping it here in the comments.

I rarely nap and have no ill effects from it. What I have found out that only 1% of the population has this. It is a blessing and a curse! 🤠

I have dysautonomia (essentially if it's controlled by the brainstem, it's likely fucked up- circadian rhythm disorders, heart rate going too slow or fast- I go fast, blood pressure being too high or low- I go high, breathing- particularly while sleeping-> I have central sleep apnea, digestive tract issues) and also have adrenal insufficiency due to HPA axis issues from meds affecting the hormone secretion of the hypothalamus, pituitary and adrenal glands (not enough cortisol is produced by my body) along with having severe chronic pain issues.
As such, I am on quite a few meds to try to force my brain to relax and rest but they don't always work.
