God, I miss this gal so much. Thank you Lesly for passing thru our life time. May you continue to sing with the angels. Rest In Peace. Your music will live on forever. ❤️
At 5:17, Lesley is absolutely irresistible. She is only seventeen here, but possesses the poise and presence of a person much older. Even that face, that magnificent face shows a maturity way beyond her adolescent years. She is pure magic and fifty-seven years later, I am still hopelessly in love with Lesley Sue Goldstein.
Actually, I think you missed it too. Connie Francis was the first female Rock N Roll singer. In was 1958 and she scored gold with "Stupid Cupid." It even topped the charts in England--number 1 on their hit parade. And the hits just kept on keeping on from there. I liked Lesley too, but let's not forget Connie first, Brenda second, and then Lesley came on the scene.
When I was a kid on the ‘60s era I didn’t know English, but I loved listening all those kind of music and I made up lyrics and sang along with the music standing in front of the mirror with spoon 🥄 as a microphone 🎤

They always seem to skip her finest song in my opinion, California Nights. They always keep her stuck in It's My Party mode, just because it's an easy hook for people to remember and sing. It's My Party is almost now a parody of itself.
Thomas Timlin - Agree. My favs were 'California Nights,' 'Maybe I Know' and 'You Don't Own Me.' I think 'It's My Party' and the sequel, 'Judy's Turn To Cry' were bigger hits because they were easier to dance to, lol.
Agree! California Nights is incredible. A lesser known song. The Look Of Love is a simple pop song, i know, but something about it is so charming and gives me little chills! Look how upbeat and delightful Lesley is here all these years later. Love her. She's someone special!
@@babbisp1 and @Rick Barnes - The video you are looking for is from American Bandstand, 1966. I think it was pretty standard in pop artists' contracts back then (unless they were able to negotiate otherwise) that all costs of recording their record would come out of the artist's cut of the sales profits. So even if the record sold well, it might be a little while before the artist would see any money from it. And if the record didn't do well enough financially to reimburse the "expenses" of recording, the artist would be on the hook to the record company for the balance.
That's WHY all artists should to hire (separate from the record company) THEIR OWN (a) accountant (b) music attorney (c) PR team. Give them a percentage of their income. After her 1st hit Lesley was in a strong bargining position and should have put this team in place. They took FULL advantage of her (as they did so many others) because of this. See her comment here where she says "...and I was one of lucky ones...". I'm glad she fought them and got something. She made millions for them and should have asked for an audit. Ripping off the artist back then was a common occurance because many were young kids and/or didn't know how the music business "worked" and they took FULL advantage (same thing happened to the Beatles) of them @@johndipinto8816
Listen to the talk about how they started singing songs after so many beats etc. Listen, is that not a tribute to the era of music that was, talented people singing & playing instruments with little or no backing . No lip sync , or other mumbo jumbo that they bring out d=today & call 'singing , music or whatever ' What a suburb era to grow up in... wasn't it... Peggy Wood
The music business is positively satanic in its treatment of the talent. Writers must own their compositions, and never sell a controlling interest in them.

The voice the face the hair whats not to love about this incredible woman Thank you Lesley for so many wonderful memories.
Lesley Gore was a great singer and very Beautiful as well.
Leslie was a very, very understated performer/singer who held her own against Motown and the Brit's during that competitive mid 60's period.
I loved Lesley Gore's music as soon as it came out in the sixties. She left us way too soon. Rest in peace, beautiful lady.
Its 2022 and i still love Lesley Gore. She died 4 days before my sister was born💔

6:19 she was expecting *THE* question, wasn't she? 6:24 made my little gay heart skip a beat.
I met Lesley Gore and her brother Micheal Gore, serendipitously, at The Riviera Café in NYC in 1980. Both of them were absolutely charming.
LOL I THOUGHT THE SAME THING
YES! The 'is it true' almost always followed by 'are you gay' 🤣🤣🤣
I started really singing along to her songs when I heard You Don’t Own Me. I love it! ❤💕

Thanks for posting this video.
Gore definitely makes the 60 vibe timeless with You Don’t Own Me.

Lesley Gore was the first rock n roll female singer -- something that writers have missed. She had 25 charted hits.

wow, I didn't realise she was Gillian Anderson's mother!
Thats incredibly untrue I don’t know where you got this information

Gillian Anderson is the daughter of Rosemary "Posie" Alyce (née Lane).

Most songs sung by women... about men... were written by men. Especially in the 60's and 70's.
