Robin is also very religious in this show and actually refuses a photoshoot later on because she doesn't want to expose her body. I don't think this was about her thinking she was too big, I imagine this was more to do with her personal morals.

And hooboy did Tyra give her the shame for having personal morals on that later episode...it was awful. I also found her a hypocrite for calling Katie out "makes you look like Miss July" when we've seen Tyra in that exact pose for Sports Illustrated. Jessica, I am here for you still making these vids bagging on the treatment of these young women. It keeps this top of mind for whenever Tyra gets it in her head that another season of ANTM is needed.

I'd love to see a show like ANTM only instead of judging models, they judge photographers who are all tasked with photographing the same model in the same styling/staging. But to make it fair the photographers would also be responsible for choosing the shot they think is the best and edit it themselves.

I feel like the emphasis on wanting very young models (like between 18-22, usually) isn't just because of youthful looks. I feel like part of it is because it's easier to manipulate and take advantage of models who don't have a lot of life experience yet, or who haven't had practice in setting boundaries.
And I feel like this is illustrated especially through Robin, who is one of the contestants that was best at setting boundaries and hard 'no's. Later in the series, she refuses to do a nude shoot and gets sent home for it. Even though Shannon, who was 19, followed her lead and declined to do the shoot as well.

When I was watching this as a kid and nude photos hoots came up I thought that's how it is in the industry. I used to view models negatively because I thought if your dream is to be a model then you automatically have to be comfortable being nude most times in front of people on set or at runways. I didn't think you could be a model and set these boundaries because this is how I thought the industry worked

While the fashion industry is just now starting to embrace "mid range" models. Back when this show was created and until very recently, plus boards began at size 8. For a while it was sizes 8-14 and then sizes 16 & 18 were included. The height standards still were 5'9 and up. Mind you, those models would then be booked for brands that were too big for them so they would be asked to bring padding to fill the clothing. This still happens often.

@@Wolvesbane39 I remember on one season, they made a big deal about a girl who they thought could be the first "plus-size" person to win. I think she was either size 8 or size 10. 🙄
But whaddya know, after being there for awhile she gradually lost weight, because like you said, they didn't feed them properly. Then they criticized her for it, assuming she was choosing to diet (she adamantly denied it), telling her to decide if she wanted to be a plus-sized model or not. She started becoming model-model thin, and that was...bad? 🤯
The show must've taken whatever answer they gave for "What's your biggest insecurity?" in the pre-interviews, given that to the judges, and told them always push those buttons. TV shows cast older actors for students because of working laws. If you use minors, they can't film for the same hours and therefore, it takes longer to finish the shoot. That has nothing to do with modeling. I don't think the law even applies to it. Also, actors have playing ages. So, just because they are 30 in real life, some of them can still look younger after styling. Really bad comparison.

I think the bottom line for this show is entertainment value, not teaching aspiring models the craft or actually launching any top models (which they haven't). I think they take the angle of forming narratives and the choose a person who's going to be this cycle's villain, who's going to be the underdog, someone that they're going to champion for a little while and then invent reasons to turn on, they hone in on someone's insecurities and chip away at their self esteem and get them to break down (like Anchal for instance), zero in on the girl who's under the most stress and tighten the screws, and manipulate the contestants to pit them against one another and create rivalries for the purpose of drama. They already know who they're going to keep around and who they're not, and they're going to get rid of the extraneous characters who aren't useful to a story-driven narrative arc. The selection of Adrianne Curry - not meaning this as any insult to her- was based upon her having the big personality that's good for this type of tv, not upon her potential success in the modeling industry. Adrianne herself said that the agency who was obligated to sign her didn't want her and did nothing at all to promote her. This show isn't going to make anyone the next Gisele Bundchen, and it isn't really aiming to either.

I’m not referring only to this video but in general as it happens nowadays with many female artists, them being overly sexualized and that automatically meaning they are stronger females…. I think we must respect the ones that don’t want to uncover their bodies, it’s a moral personal stand. For me personally it doesn’t have to do even with religion, I’m not religious at all, I just don’t like that.
Anyways, watching your well done analysis, I realize even more how toxic was this show to the models, they don’t deserve so much abuse and wrong words…. I hate it and it all comes to that Tyra person, she set the mood for everything that was going on…

Agree!! I think in any way (either covering up, bearing it all, or anything in between) it’s the women’s own choice is what is the power. It’s true that it has been kinda expected of women to be one way cause of society, but some ppl really are just more modest with their bodies and they don’t feel comfortable showing it base point for example. Respect women’s choices for themselves :D

I had an agent tell me that the fashion industry prefers models to start in their teens then they retire from it in their early 20's because they want the models to be moldable & easier to work with. She said even though I could pass for 18/19 & was skinny enough, it was more about the mindset than the looks - the fashion industry preys on inexperienced women because they're meant to be props. In the commercial industry, you can model 'til your 80's if you want to as most brands look for more 'everyday" types of people - you still need to be attractive and certain features help, such as being taller than average or in good shape, but the standards aren't nearly as crazy as the fashion industry.

And how long will it last before your replaced by a 19 year old who is still freshfaced and willing to get her boobs out for the camera i know that sounds not very nice but the idea of doing in onlyfans case pornography just doesn't feel like a good way to make a career maybe im just from a different time im 24 by the way

Watching you I sometimes think I could be a model, but then I realize that along with being a short marshmallow, I'm also picky with my clothes. 😅
    Keep inspiring people! 😁

For the age thing, when this first season came out, pressional models were YOUNG. We're talking 14-15 year olds so a woman in her late 20's seemed ancient.

Sadly true, I remember there a lot of debates back then about the age of models and how the industry tried to normalize 14 as the starting age.

As someone who used to be very thin and very pale due to a condition, I do think it's worth mentioning once and being like, "hey, are you getting all the vitamins you need, are you having any issues with fatigue or feeling cold all the time?" And then just roll with it. Everyone is different, I have chronic illness and that's where my struggles came from, but if things are under control, then don't worry about it. I have things under control now, but I do still look different, and that's okay. I'm glad more diversity and acceptance is coming up with places hiring models who are different body shapes, have disabilities, and are more relatable to people who will actually be buying the products when it comes to models for clothing brands.

Jessica, hi. Just stumbled across your channel. I’ve been watching your reaction videos on ANTM. I’m loving it. It’s true this show has aged very poorly and none of this would fly today but *at the time* this was great TV and mine and my daughter’s favorite show. Fortunately, it didn’t mess her up (lol) she was only like 6 and 7 at the time but she had a little notebook and she’d write all the girls names down and pick her favorites. She really developed a love for fashion. Her favorite model was Alison Harvard. Anyway now she is 20 and is pursuing a career in communications. I think she wants to be a correspondent and I really think that stemmed from this show. So, I love to watch your reactions to it and you are so super cute with your video game references! 😂

I think Allison Harvard is a lot of people's favourite. It's hard to take your eyes off her.

I don't often watch the plugs for sponsors in videos, but I was distracted by your amazing photography. There is something enchanting about your use of light, composition, and colour. I love your analyses of ANTM too, but I just wanted to register my enjoyment of the brief glimpse I got of your photography.

I've been watching your videos for few years now and absolutely love your content. I was wondering if you could talk about how the photographers felt about being part of ANTM or like how the show affected their career. Idk I just feel like that would be quite interesting topic

These judges make me sad for models who prefer 'modest shoots' whether they're muslim, or just prefer covering up for whatever reason. Kind of makes sense now why Halima Aden quit modeling.. I can guarantee people were disrespecting her the way they did to Robyn.

Mr Jay did an interview with twixt and he said that in the first season they had nothing- no idea what they were doing no ideas for photo shoots, no photographers lined up, no stylists nothing

er for the younger audience wondering "why is VIRGIN" sprawled on a sign it used to be a huge record store and label in nyc that sold merch. it was my fav place as a budding tween lol. nyc didnt just have a huge sign in a populated area screaming at people to stay pure

I wonder how much this show affected my thoughts about age.
I had a big problem to turn 18 and up, until I realized life doesn't end when you turn 25.
I felt like I was supposed to have a husband, a mortgage, career, maybe a kid or two before I turn 25 MAX.. I was supposed have it ALL. And there they are saying a 26 year old is old.. jeez..
I still don't have those, and I'm older than 26. hahhhah. xD

Why wasnt Tyra in a bikini when she was doing her shoot? She wants all the girls to be fully confident on their second photo shoot ever, shouldn’t be be that way too as a supermodel ?

  • @ruthimegi5556

I think part of the set design was not just for the photo shoot but for how it would appear in video. They wanted to make it look “complicated” and official. Obviously the running water does nothing in a still but it looks way more dynamic in moving picture. This show is a reality show so everything done in it is to spice things up.

not to add salt to this awful wound of an episode already, but did anyone else notice that they made Elyse wear padding for her chest, and then they chose the picture where that padding was covered by her arm? what was the point in making her wear that if they just chose the photo where it covers it up anyway? also hi Jessica! big fan, and I love your sarcasm and your very cute, vocal cat ❤
