@@Riplee86 From what I heard, perhaps its not fire element, rather its meant to represent the bright energy that appears. So when Mila was using the Dual Blades, the "fire" effect was supposed to be her powering up into demon mode (in-game you can sort of see the weapon glowing) and the Switch Axe the phial charges. Doesn't excuse how it looks a lot like fire though, because even I thought the same until I read several comments pointing it out.
I know this was a year ago but faithful? At what point in the games do nercylla live exclusively in caves and form huge groups and lay eggs inside people? Why does a switch axe perform an SAED? Why does the hunter act like some uncivilized savage?
Funny how in his entire career, Paul WS Anderson made many live action video game adaptations………..yet only one of them was actually objectively good: *Mortal Kombat* (1995)
I believe it was in an interview, or special features, that Anderson said it was the studio executives who wanted the US Army element in the movie. Apparently they felt that the mainstream audience wouldn't understand how tough the monsters were unless they were shown shrugging off the effects of modern weapons.

Oh. Oh, God. I had purposely forgotten this film was made that I ACTUALLY forgot about it altogether. And now I have to try to purge it from my memory once again. Thanks, Decker. 🥴😣
I don't know if it's been said before, but this movie creates a really nice time-paradox with Monster Hunter World, sort of a time dialectic-loop of sorts that I really love. This event I'm talking about continues the abrupt end of the movie and explains some plot-holes (like the Chief's ability to speak our language). People should look into that!
My friends who play monster hunter audibly groaned when the companion chick from World shows up and it is painfully obvious she was a contractual obligation. Camera pans to her for no reason constantly. Felt as out of place as a random chinese woman in an US movie that also just happens to be financied by a chinese studio. It becomes immersion breaking the way they do it.
I file this under guilty pleasures. It's not great... but it's kind of better than I expected. The whole language barrier thing is always a fun trope, especially with dimension hopping. Great review as always!
Great review! ❤❤ I caught this once on TV, missed the first half hour, and never felt like I missed anything, important or otherwise. Looks like I wasn't wrong. 🤷♀️ And I haven't even played the games for comparison. 😅
If you spend your first act introducing characters to kill them mainly off screen in the second act, you have no stakes in your story and no reason for the main character to even want to go back. With no point to the journey you can't have a satisfying climax either, because there's nothing to achieve. Indeed the only interesting part in that case would be the second act where the fun parts happen. It goes to show, with all the scripts this director is supposed to have written, that even an experienced writer can completely miss the mark, especially if he's just trying to please his producers and his wife. Nothing new where this one is concerned. As always, a wonderful review full of your usual wit and much more entertaining than the movie itself, I'm sure. Thank you Decker for that wonderful Summer.
It's so strange that they failed with this movie when the games, pretty much since the first, have almost the exact same premise every single time: "you are Hunter, bad monster does bad stuff, you eventually hunt bad Monster, turns out Elder Dragon is the reason Monster was bad, you eventually hunt Elder Dragon, credits" Very damn simple, all you gotta do is add a half-decent script like World and Rise did and that's it.......and they made it this odd Isekai-style story with IRL military instead.
I didnt mind the movie as a Mila movie, but I admit that they did my Swax terrible. So late in the movie and it never switched once while using the special move of ANOTHER weapon. My boy was treated so badly!
The weapons in this movie actually do more, let alone any, damage than they do in the games. Also, I love how they had to pull a "Land of the Lost" in order to make the plot happen
I actually never knew there was a Monster Hunter movie. Pity, as my friends and I enjoyed the Resident Evil movies and that seems to be pretty similar. Thanks for the review.

Many thanks for reviewing this Shado Decker. As a fan of Monster Hunter I was both nervous and excited to see the game turned to a movie. Seeing it was paul w Anderson I knew it wasn't going to be like the game and as a result I was both pleased and disappointed. I loved the outfit design of the actual hunters and the cgi of the monsters. My only disappointed factor was the story and how they done it and how they held off on some of the monsters that would have better potential like Teoastra or Zinogre but hey I give this 3 rare steaks out of 5😁
A Disapointment is probably the best term to sum up this movie. It having this parallel worlds plot line detracts from the story. Its like if your watching lord of the rings and some COD guys get Isakaied there only to get bodied by the Nahzgul whats the point? The Rathalos is a Staple so OBVIOUSLY it had to be the Final boss of the movie. but whats funny is they faught a Diablos which is arguably tougher then a Rathalos, and yeah the Diablos was cool it would have been cooler if it had a Turf war with the Rathalos or Narschella. Speaking of whom the Narschella isnt ascting like how it would they're clearly trying to rip off Alien with this one. And the Gore Magalla at the end (Or as I like to call em Toothless) such a tease. And if they wanted Creepy they should have used the Khezu which is a Giant Leech monster that Vores its victimes oh and unlike the Narshella THAT THING ACTUALLY DOSE THE ALIEN CHEST BURSTER CRAP, I could go on with the monsters but this comment is goin on long enough. If the movie was solidly in the Monster Hunter world and none of the Isakai plot elements, adding proof of hero and maybe a few more monster varitiy it could have been SO MUCH better. Hell Paul W.S Anderson was sitting on a Gold mine considering Monster Hunter REALLY DOSENT have much of a In Universe Plot outside of background lore on the monsters and some parts of the world but even then you REAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLY have to dig for it even as a die hard fan. As a fan of the monster hunter games and god eater games I will say two things: The Movie is good if a little directionless at the end. Rathalos is only a lower mid tier monster, as for it's pattern, more complex then a few of the starter raptor like ones but still not really all that hard to kill.
@@AaronSoul725 My biggest issue with it is that it randomly stopped working on my pc, I really liked how there was even more variety of builds even if the levels were all of a sudden strangely small.
8:48 You don't need all that explanation... It was a cutscene transition. Happens all the time in video games. It's the same as a rifle butt to the face.
I think a 2 out of 5 is pretty low. The movie was overall fun and entertaining. Also it covers pretty much all the bases Monster Hunter is well known for! Awesome monsters, great graphics/CGI, fun action combat sequences, and a non-existent whatever told story! I'd say the movie in all fairness covered all those bases! Definitely better than most other video game movie adaptations! Personally I'd like to see a sequel and have it take off where this one left off! I'd say it at least deserves a 3.5 out of 5 overall!
The first half of the movie works surprisingly well. When Natalie mets the Hunter (He never had a name in our country’s translation) the fun starts. But it goes downhill from there fast.
It sounds like (as eexpected) the real world military plot elementa is what brings the films story down as evident by their appearance in both the first and third act of the film. Like it seems like the film really pucks up when its more like its game in act 2
I never played any of the games, was just aware of them and the premise sounded good enough to give this movie a watch. And indeed, it could have been much better. There is something in its execution that feels amateurish despite the good visual effects. Glad to see Ron Perlman having some fun anyway. Side note, that gun was not a .50 BMG but a variant of the M134, chambered for 7.62 rounds.
@@GriffinPilgrim worse yes, but budget might be a factor there. And honestly, in my opinion W.S Anderson seems to take himself more serious than Boll 🤣
@@peterspipes9698 Boll can afford Ben Kingsley, if he's being cheap it's because he wants to be. Anderson takes his filmmaking more seriously but imo that's because he actually cares. He's hardly making high art but he is trying to make something people will actually like. Boll never once gave me the impression that he cared about anything but making a quick buck on name recognition. Further Anderson or his crew at least puts some effort into referencing the games. His works usually at least LOOK like the games. Aside from maybe Bloodrayne's outfit Boll didn't even bother with that much. Also Anderson never challenged his critics to a boxing match so he could beat them up so he gets points for class.
I know main characters have plot armor, but if I was stung by a giant bug and in a fist fight (twice), after climbing a mountain? I wouldn't be seen for the rest of the movie! Watch as the next movie shows that humans are decedents of elder dragons and she can dual wield greatswords.
knowing paul, he'll probably think the raths are elder dragons, and have the main cast capture a kirin with a shock trap to kill it who knows, maybe the admiral's charge blade will also do a zsd
Ok as a monster hunter fan I gotta say they really gotta be a special kind of screw up to screw up MH as a movie. The there is so much potential and it's easy to make it into a movie snd be accurate to the games. For starters Nersylla (big FU spider) isn't vulnerable to sunlight, they also wear the skin of a monster on its body like its Buffalo Bill as a makeshift rubber padding to absorb electricity. Also the horned monster is a Diablos a herbivore with a deadly sonic roar... which never was used in the movie. Also a Rathalos is not dome ancient dragon guardian they are wyverns and if they wanted an ancient dragon guardian they could've picked a literal Elder Dragon like a Fatalis! Last thing, the eyelets dragon IS an Elder Dragon, it's called a Gore Magala and the indication on why they show up is if the monster ecosystem is overpopulated and they have a dust they shake off their bodies that is like monster rabies...thats right it balances a whole ecosystem using frenzy dandruff and that this is only a baby. It sheds into a golden dragon called a Shagaru Magala and it is more deadly.
I remember when Tony Jaa was considered the next big thing in terms of Martial Arts movies, his breakthrough was legitimately exciting and then Ong Bak 2 happened (a film or more a collection of action scenes that I personally really enjoy) and it's production was beset by woes and incredulous rumours. After that Jaa's career decisions were incredibly and with the exception of SPL2 (which was decent enough) his film roles were completely and utterly self destructive. Shame.
I enjoyed one of the games, and tried giving the trailer to this a watch. TI’s character was glassing an area with a scoped rifle, through a closed eye. It was then that I knew I would never watch this movie! 😂😂😂
Honestly I like this movie. Unfortunately this movie felt like monster hunter world game with the 90's super mario bros movie mix. I have to say that I completely loved the post credit scene showing the palico joining the fight
as a MonHun fan... movie is absolutely terrible, i hate the whole isekai crap, and i think Tony should've been the MC because his character was a lot more compelling to me tbh. A lone hunter separated from his crew and far from civilization and struggling to survive in a world of mega-fauna that could murder you in a single step/fireball/tail sweep? That could make for a cool MonHun movie! We all joke that MonHun Hunters are built different but put into a more realistic setting like this would make it more interesting for a viewing audience. It's not totally awful though as i loved the secenery, set design, character costumes, and the honestly fantastic cgi used for all the monsties. That said, hate this movie, but i always love your reviews Decker, keep up the good work man!
Random facts: 1. Anything with the director will always have his wife be a Mary Sue main protagonists. 2. This is supposed to be in relation to Monster Hunter world. 3. All the monsters shown BEFORE Rathalos in this movie are around 4+ higher star quests. Rathalos is usually 3 star quests. 4. After this, the director stopped working with capcom given how they made the fans hate the games. I kid you not I’ve seen some people who are RE fans hate the 6 movies before “welcome to raccoon city” and the Netflix series
I only saw this movie for Tony Jaa and to accompany a friend who was a monster hunter veteran. He pointed out that some of the characters' weapons were given the wrong abilities and using fire against that fire breathing dragon should be ineffective.
We wore one dog tag on a chain around the neck and a second threaded thru a bootlace. Gave graves registration a decent chance of identifying the body.
In light of how Borderlands turned out, Monster Hunter the movie did a pretty nifty job of “What if monsters spill into our world and set us back to the Stone Age, weapon efficacy wise.” The monster looked like the monster, the opening plays like an actual video game. Hero falling from the sand boat and needing to catch up with his team.
Maybe it’s just me, but I felt this movie was very weirdly paced. It felt like an hour long act 1 with a 30 minute act 3 and very little cohesion between them.
Great video. I thought the movie was just okay, but the pacing is ridiculous, the ending disappointing, and the MH goofiness isn't quite there. But definitely could've been worse.
It drives me nuts because there was no reason at all to do the whole alternate world thing. Just write a story about a rookie hunter who has to learn about all this shit, it's so simple but they had to make it weirdly more complicated.
@@AkuTenshiiZero yeah that would have been awesome or even the hunter she meets let’s see his story let’s see him fight beast to make it back to his tribe also more of the felynes fuck her and the army and all that
Im gonna destroy this movie by pointing out the flaws right now for fun. 1. Field Team Leader or "Hunter" in this movie got the Diablos wrong. It is a Black Diablos, not a regular one. 2. I have no idea why they made Nerscylla scared of sunlight. Thats not a thing and Nerscylla lives in jungles and forests, not deserts. 3. Rathalos is WAY too big in the movie and is half the size of what we got. 4. FIRE WEAPONS DO NOTHING TO RATHALOS THE FIRE DRAGON! If youre gonna use an element, use Dragon or Thunder for best results. 5. Switch axe doesnt work like Ron Pearlman was using it. You swing, swing, swing, attach to nearest monster appendages, preferablg head, and blow shit up not smash it into the ground ffs. 6. Gore magala being thrown in at the end is a sin. Period. Was this needed? No. Do i care? No. Was it fun to vent my frustrations with this movie? Oh absolutely 😈
Well technically 🤓 They explained it as a "greater rathalos" and it was temporarily available in a event quest. And in some games rathalos does take 5% fire damage to its back. You wouldn't want to use fire on it but if you were feeling masochistic you could bring it down with just fire shots.
Your review was 10 times better than the actual movie. Keep it up Decker!

Love this review, as usual. Also love that you know MH more than the people who made this.... movie.
Got the look right. And basically nothing else.
Decker, if you keep making reviews better than the movie, someone is going to ask you for a real movie script one day. Will you be ready?
I never played any of the games, was just aware of them and the premise sounded good enough to give this movie a watch. And indeed, it could have been much better. There is something in its execution that feels amateurish despite the good visual effects. Glad to see Ron Perlman having some fun anyway.
Side note, that gun was not a .50 BMG but a variant of the M134, chambered for 7.62 rounds.
Paul W.S Anderson... An expert in messing up videogame IP's.
Uwe Boll would like a word with you.
@@Riplee86 oh, i forgot about him! Top contender, but still only second place 😉
@@peterspipes9698 Nah, Boll is WAY worse than Anderson. Anderson is a bad adapter but at least gives the impression that he wants to make a fun film.
45 minute tutorial? you speed runner. great review loved the titles for all the sections and the actually game player knowledge
I know main characters have plot armor, but if I was stung by a giant bug and in a fist fight (twice), after climbing a mountain? I wouldn't be seen for the rest of the movie!
Watch as the next movie shows that humans are decedents of elder dragons and she can dual wield greatswords.
knowing paul, he'll probably think the raths are elder dragons, and have the main cast capture a kirin with a shock trap to kill it
who knows, maybe the admiral's charge blade will also do a zsd
Its technically not considered a elder until it becomes shagaru.
You can actually capture it in the gore magala stage of development
Okay, if smashing into a ROCK is enough to break off its horns then there is no effing way the .50 wouldn't have fucked it up.
Some MREs did have chocolate in them that was developed to withstand very hot conditions. 😉👍
I want to see that alternate castaway movie you described
I remember when Tony Jaa was considered the next big thing in terms of Martial Arts movies, his breakthrough was legitimately exciting and then Ong Bak 2 happened (a film or more a collection of action scenes that I personally really enjoy) and it's production was beset by woes and incredulous rumours. After that Jaa's career decisions were incredibly and with the exception of SPL2 (which was decent enough) his film roles were completely and utterly self destructive. Shame.
Strong Riddick vibes.
The dragon ripping the front of the helicopter off was pretty cool, I think.
Its not a dragon its a wyvern D:

@@procow2274 I mean, if we are getting technical, it's not a helicopter, it's a tiltrotor.
Very enjoyable video thank you
As a huge MH fan, this movie was painful to watch. Great review decker
I enjoyed one of the games, and tried giving the trailer to this a watch. TI’s character was glassing an area with a scoped rifle, through a closed eye. It was then that I knew I would never watch this movie! 😂😂😂
Man they turned monster hunter into a iskai anime... Thank God no sequel.
Handsome summer series, man!
Honestly I like this movie. Unfortunately this movie felt like monster hunter world game with the 90's super mario bros movie mix. I have to say that I completely loved the post credit scene showing the palico joining the fight
6:33 that stinger would be the end of any human. It went through her.
As an monster hunter fan I liked this game thanks Decker and the giant MF spider monster is called Nerscylla.
as a MonHun fan... movie is absolutely terrible, i hate the whole isekai crap, and i think Tony should've been the MC because his character was a lot more compelling to me tbh.
I watch this movie in theaters the day it came out and the ending made me think they were trying for a Monster Hunter 2 movie
Somehow, the worst thing about this movie for me is that the minigun somehow has the same fire rate and audio of a 50 cal
I think I'm not the only one but...totally forgot this even existed!
Random facts:
That Hershey bar must've been a reshaped D-rat if it survived the desert.
I'm not the only one who thought he had already reviewed this, right?😂
I only saw this movie for Tony Jaa and to accompany a friend who was a monster hunter veteran. He pointed out that some of the characters' weapons were given the wrong abilities and using fire against that fire breathing dragon should be ineffective.
Love your content. Also, the fact that she uses fire weapons on Rathalos is asinine.
We wore one dog tag on a chain around the neck and a second threaded thru a bootlace. Gave graves registration a decent chance of identifying the body.
In light of how Borderlands turned out, Monster Hunter the movie did a pretty nifty job of “What if monsters spill into our world and set us back to the Stone Age, weapon efficacy wise.”
The monster looked like the monster, the opening plays like an actual video game. Hero falling from the sand boat and needing to catch up with his team.
This pos movie is like a cross combination between Turok: Dinosaur Hunter mixed with Land Of The Lost (2009).
This movie doesn't exist. Subsequently this video doesn't exist.
Been watching him for like 6 years and im not stoping any time soon
Of course another property with an awesome story already laid out that Hollywood takes a shit on.
Paul W. S. Anderson has made it his goal in life to make terrible movies based on video games
@@shawnamiller191 yeah and sticking this horrible actor in all of them.
@@kalobhunt9001 his movies have become "Hey everyone look at my wife! Isn't she hot!?"

@@procow2274 fair enough, I can't play bow pre world
Im gonna destroy this movie by pointing out the flaws right now for fun.
Well technically 🤓
They explained it as a "greater rathalos" and it was temporarily available in a event quest.
And in some games rathalos does take 5% fire damage to its back. You wouldn't want to use fire on it but if you were feeling masochistic you could bring it down with just fire shots.
