  • In this step-by-step video tutorial I will show you, how to knit my Halcyon sweater, which is perfect for beginner lace knitters.
Download PDF knitting pattern on my website: www.esenique.com/knitting-pat... or on Ravelry: bit.ly/3MTcUyC and let’s start!
This is the first sweater from my summer lace collection and I will tell you its story at the end of the description.
Also, I am going to create a video knitting tutorial for 2 lace tops using the same knit stitch. Subscribe and click on the bell icon to ensure you don't miss the new video tutorial: / @knitwithesenique
    ________________
In this video, I'll walk you through all the steps to create a simple net summer sweater. This sweater is for whose of you, who've completed their first knitted garments and ready to try something new.
You will meet the following techniques: cast on, knit, purl, purl 2 together, yarn over, cast off.
The sweater is worked bottom up, back and forth on the needles. The Back, Front pieces and Sleeves are worked separately and sewn together to finish.
There is a lot of positive ease. You can also choose to knit the next size up/ down. I am wearing a size S and, I am 168 cm tall (5’6’’) with a 89 cm (35 inches) bust circumference.
7 sizes are available in the PDF knitting pattern: XS, S, M, L, XL, 2XL, 3XL. I demonstrate how to knit size S.
    Materials:
    1. Yarn. I used Drops "Paris" yarn (50 g/75 m, color #17 Off White) for this project.
Drops "You 8" also will work (50 g/ 85 m). You will need (7-9-9-10-11-13-13) 50 grams skeins for your size.
Also you can try mercerised cotton by Lion Brand "24/7 Cotton" (100g/170m). You will need (4-4-4-5-5-6-7) 50 grams skeins for your size.
GAUGE: 12 stitches x 20 rows in a 10 cm (4 in) piece in Lace stitch.
    2. Circular needles 6 mm (US 10) and approx 60 cm total length.
    3. Crochet 3-5 mm/ D-H (optional).
    Lace knit stitch.
Slip 1st stitch, purl 1, yarn over, purl 2 stitches together*, purl 2. (repeat patter between the asterisk *).

    Halcyon sweater story:
I have nothing to wear this summer! So, I decided to knit a lightweight sweater. But all the patterns I found required thin yarn and needles as thin as a pin :) The beautiful lace stitches were filled with strange abbreviations and complicated diagrams.
I needed elegant yet simple solution. A loose-fit silhouette, a basic lace knit stitch, and medium-weight natural yarn. And it won't take forever to make!
After testing numerous lace stitches I finally found one that seemed unremarkable at first. But as soon as I knitted a sample, I realized it would be the best sweater I've ever made. And I will definitely wear it!
I named it Halcyon, which means a happy time in the past. This name perfectly captures the joy I felt while knitting this sweater. And now, I want to share this delightful feeling with you!

If you're wondering HOW TO COUNT STITCHES in the lace pattern for the gauge, you can follow my method.
    1. Count the stitches in your swatch by verifying them in the ribbing - I have 16 stitches.
    2. Then measure the width - is 13 cm/5 inches.

Divide the width by the number of stitches and determine how many cm/inches are in one stitch. I have 0.8 cm/0.3 inches.
    3. Then I divide 10 cm/ 4 inches by 0.8 cm/ 0.3 inches and get 12-13 stitches. This give me the gauge.
    4. If you have 10-15 stitches in a 10 cm/4 inches piece, you won't be surprised by the sweater size at the end of knitting.
To count rows, you can simply count the edge stitches and multiply by two to get an approximate count of 20 rows.
You can modify the length of the sweater according to your preference, so there's no need to worry about it.

You speak so calmly and clearly. The design is simple but lovely, and I really like the lace stitch. I've been reluctant to do much lacework but now that I've seen how to actually DO a lifeline, I can think of a few projects I'm going to try. Your tips are great and super useful: I love how well you demonstrate everything.

I'm glad you're enjoying knitting and finding inspiration on RUclips! 🧶 You can certainly adapt this pattern to use only knit stitches if you prefer not to purl. Instead of P2tog, you can try K2tog (knit two stitches together) for a similar effect. It might be a bit tighter, but you can adjust your tension to make it work.
