I dedicated this year before the season to educate myself through your videos. I've hunted whitetails in my state of SC since 89 and being a firefighter allows me to hunt 5 days out if 7 the whole season I thought I had enough knowledge. But watching your videos educated me more deeply and refined my skills. My approach this year I focused on intensely. I have taken a one 130"s and finally got the buck I was after and my son as well. Keep doing What you do!! Billy
I have been watching your videos for about 4-5 years now. I have been hunting whitetails for nearly 30 years. I have to say that every word you said about the pre rut was spot on. You just kept spitting out information and advice that is 100% accurate and that I have experienced myself for the last 29yr of hunting. That is how I know you are worth watching and listening too.
Been watching you for several years. This year I finally decided to follow some of your advice and tips. Yesterday I killed an 8 and a half year old monster that I’ve been hunting for half a decade. I smoked him right beside a watering hole I put in during the spring while he was hitting the mock vine I hung up. Can’t thank you enough for all the videos you put out!
Just started watching your videos before this season and even though I live in Georgia which is totally different environments I used a ton of your tips and used to believe more time was the key but patience and timing of weather put me on my first mature buck of my life only being 21 I’ve been hunting pretty much my whole life and this was the first time I used your tips and it paid off. It was a 5 1/2 to 6 years old 11 pointer not sure of inch’s to classify 170 pounds field dressed and had a 23.5 neck three inches from skull and absolute stud and I can’t thank you enough for your knowledge you taught me and thousands of others your like the grandfather of hunting everyone should listen to. 100% best channel on RUclips for hunting whitetail hands down!!!
Love your videos, Jeff. Been fun hunting my whole life and used to shoot bow all of the time when I was younger. I decided to buy myself a bow again and go bow hunting for the first time this year and have some time off next weekend to really get some hunting in. I have been watching your videos for months now, and I’ve learned a ton of good information. Thank you for posting so many good informative videos. Good luck this season!

Jeff- just wanted to tell you how great your channel is. I don’t know of another channel that comes out with so much good information so often. No idea how you keep the videos coming. Tons of good content. Glad I found your channel a couple years ago
I use to think that your rut activity advice was off....then you designed my habitat plan and it now coincides with what you preach. Never been more successful. Thank you for taking the risk and turning a passion into a career that helps bring so much joy. Glad 5 years later you finally took my advice on the weather app and partnered up with Huntwise😉. Better late than never and it makes life/hunting balance so easy!
Jeff, Have been taking your advice and picking only good days to hunt, not necessarily which days I want to hunt. I picked last Saturday and this past Thursday which both had significant drops in temp and wind speed. Both days I had good deer movement well before dark. Thursday I shot my biggest buck to date. As bad as i wanted to get up a tree, I heeded your advice and held off to when the time was right. Thanks for your willingness to share your years of experience with us.
Started to notice some rubbing activity. Seems a bit early here in south Alabama. Peak rut is late January into early February. Born and raised in Wisconsin. Been here for 16 years. These deer and the strange patterns are really tough. Have some really nice bucks in the area. I own 88 acres and seems to be getting better. Began planting hard and soft mass trees 10 years ago. The past two seasons have shown some really good bucks. I didn't get to hunt much last year due to covid but I am fired up. You have to pace yourself with a 70-day season, but late January requires sit time! Good Luck to All! I have learned a great deal from Jeff. The strategies to crossover even hear in the south.
Hey brother, How about a video on how people with limited stands and/or location spots (1-3 total) can best manage and rotate those locations throughout the season to maximize their hunts. I happen to fall into this category with limited budget and property. Thanks! Keep up the work.
Agree. Or limited acreage. What if we dont have those magical doe bedding areas. Or feeding spots. Or "rut spots". What if we just have the "woods" and whatever it includes is all we have to work with. Sometimes, some of us can't hunt different stand locations based on the wind because we simply dont have any more options. Its not a complaint, its just a fact that a lot of hunters deal with. How can guys like us go about chasing big mature bucks?

I have a list of questions as to things I should do and where you would put stuff Vs where I would put stuff, ie water, hinge, etc.... Looking forward to having you come and check it out! MICHAEL
Put out a grape vine linking branch on Friday 830 Friday morning had a nice 8 pt at it ,my buddies were giving me bull that it wouldn't work till I showed them the trail cam picture now they want one 😀 love your video's
Hey Jeff - been watching your content for about a year, phenomenal information and channel. I used your land management videos to improve a private parcel in SE Wisconsin over summer, and am seeing MUCH better activity already on the land, and have really started to get a good understanding of the how land improvements/elements define movement. Using this info I was able to harvest a doe this past Friday as I try to manage the property's doe numbers. I still need to take out another 1-2 does this season which will be fun sharing this experience with friends and family, but also can't wait to hunt my first pre-rut and rut on the property in 2020. Thanks for all the amazing information you provide!
Good stuff from Jeff, if you compare his videos from even last year, he continues to hone his craft. Now, that said, I am glad deer hunting isn’t a cookie cutter approach as he takes at times. I think this is an excellent learning video for most but just focusing on bedding, or transition, or feeding doesn’t work for me in open farm country where I have more Ag terraces than I have trees to stand in but that’s me. That’s ok though, I am glad he’s producing these and taking a simple approach. Even this 37 year veteran picks up some good stuff. Good luck to all.
Hi Jeff I love ur Channel and love and learn alot. I love the idea of quality access points but the best ways to access on my hunting area are out the neighboring property where I can't walk so how would u access ur stand if u had no good access points besides walking through the bedding area which is what I basically have to do. Before I started watching this Channel I would hunt every chance I had and more. Our season started Oct 1 and I've only hunted one time trying to be smart and not "create" the a lull. Just looking for strategies to get to stand if I can't get around the bedding area ? Thanks hope u understand what I asking....keep up the great videos and why don't don't have any if ur deer hunts on the Channel we'd all love to see it. Your deer whisperer to most of us....I've literally changed my whole hunting style since finding this Channel...
I shot two big bucks the last two years at the same spot and same week and they were both pre rut and I think believe they were feeding up because they had so much fat but I used snort weez to get them both to come to me
I know it’s early in the year in the Midwest but I and other people I was hunting with saw some chasing in southern Indiana last night. Seems that the cooler October weather is helpin the October lull. Also saw sparring matches that amped up a bit to more of a mini fight.
This is my first year I haven't hunted hard. I plan on hitting it pretty hard starting on Halloween. Hope my patience pays off. I have a few nice stand setups I am excited for. Your videos are by far my favorite on RUclips!
6:09 i feel like going out and starting the hunt in the evening when you believe they’re just chilling out at their beds and waiting for them to travel to the food
Hey man love the videos, I’m a new hunter of 5yrs. I’m in the U.P of Michigan. My problem is people who I believe are not bow hunters but do gun hunt and have been shooting early morning, sometimes in afternoon and in the evening. Even going as far as shooting off fire works. My family has a cabin of 40 acres and seems like the bucks are being spooked. Any advice?
I have been hunting Northern Minnesota since i was a little kid, last year I shot my first buck with bow and it was a absolute amazing experience, I also seen a lot of deer last year, now this year of 2020 it has been really challenging for me, I have hunted a lot since bow season has started, and I have also hunted the youth hunt this year, now that being said I have not seen a single thing except for a doe and a fawn and a spike buck, which i seen the doe and fawn on October 16, 2020 at about 7:45 pm which is after shooting hours and I seen the spike buck yesterday( October 26, 2020) around 5:55 pm. I get out hunting as much as I can because of the Pre-rut happening right now, the real mature bucks are moving looking for does. We hunt this 30 acre area of land that is mostly just trees and some weird plants, we would make a food plot but the land owner does not want us to do anything with the land, I also hunt some county land about 30 minutes away from where I live, and I haven't seen much besides that spike buck, which i was going to shoot because I haven't really seen much and it just gets boring sitting all the time and I don't see anything but I decided to pass on it, in hopes of seeing a bigger buck, during the pre-rut or rut. Also I went into the private 30 acre land around 3:00 PM and i spotted a decent buck track, now that being said, I have never seen a buck in there at all this year ( i hunted this the night before and didn't see anything, and I walk back there the next day and all of a sudden there is a buck roaming around in there. Everytime i go out i have grunted 2 or 3 times but that doesn't seem to bring any bucks in. I don't have any clue on what to do as to what I should do to hunt deer in my situation, or if i am doing something wrong. If you could reply to my comment and get back to me as soon as you can, that would be absolutely amazing. I love your videos and they help me out so much, I can't wait for more. Keep up the good work. I will hopefully be in touch with you soon. Thank you so much Jeff! Sincerely, Jordan Tisdell
Great info. This guy knows his stuff. Check out your state's wildlife Commision, they have good maps (at least in NC) for each county. But, what is that thing with all the pullies and the glow sight, lol. I've never shot one if those. Check out Clay Hayes.
Jeff...what app are you using that shows the wind vectors? Give me a shout if you come to Iowa. You need somebody to film you showing your public land stalking technique
I haven't had any trail camera videos of older bucks. Wow, that means I ought to not hunt my land then. Hmmm. That is hard to consider. There again, after 44 years of hunting and only two old bucks to show for it my lack of knowledge is glaring (not on my land even). 50 bucks in a lifetime is astounding!
@@ragnarragnarsson3128 Oh yeah. I'll shoot does for meat at least. I have been following this channel along for more than a year and have worked in some of the recommendations and there was a response early November last year. Just nothing on cameras up to this point. There is a bit of contradiction here and there I have to work through.
Jim or anyone... Q: Is there a difference in the meaning of a large buck scrape the length of a deer, or longer, & a regular size scrape about the size of a small wheelbarrow with a few small trees rubbed? Could the large one be a community scrape? The large scrape was 2 days old with no other activity but is in an X of trails 375-yards down the hollow from the highest point & where my stand is.
Hey Jeff, I have a question that I think you would be able to answer well for me. So I hunt fairly near to you and about 4-5 years ago we noticed that we were not seeing as many does as we would like however those years were some of our best hunting for quality mature bucks. And since we do drives for gun season we were harvesting around 15-20 does a year on a 700 acre property, and once we noticed a decline in our dear herd we cut than number down to around 10 does a year and since then we have had a great bounce back in population of does. And for our food plots we plant them every 2-3 years and we don’t kill them off in the spring so there is a lot of summer food available.. and this year I have noticed that there are hardly any mature bucks using our land and from the hunts I have been on I have been seeing a crazy amount of does every time.. I keep in tune with your channel and have watched your videos about too many does and I have tried to explain this to my dad and he doesn’t think that could possibly be a problem. And I am wondering if you see a correlation from when we had low doe numbers and high mature buck numbers to what we have now a high doe population to low mature buck numbers. Thank you
Hey Jeff- First year bowhunter here, really appreciate every video and every bit of knowledge you are giving me. Curious im in MN and huntwise says its the signing phase but it seems like you are saying its getting to be the pre rut. What are your thoughts on what youve seen so far in MN.
Where I've seen a lot of deer bedding on my property there are a lot of small < 2 inch diameter beech trees. Do deer like beech for browse? I was wondering why 70-80% of my little trees are beech if deer eat them. If they are a good source of browse for deer, do they work for hinge cuts when they get a little bigger?
I cut a vine and tied it up with other small vines to look natural right on a trail thinking the deer will hit it I see deer walking around it and paying know mind to it also made a 4 foot scrape under it. What do you think the problem is jeff. Thanks
When is typically pre rut in Missouri. And rut. If you have scent control and are not spooking deer walking in. Why is it burning stands up in mid October?
Regardless of your scent control method, you are human and are going to smell like human. Deer will pick up on that over time and if you sit the same stand or area 7 8 9 10 times they will figure it out and just stop coming there in daylight or you'll only see small bucks and some does or you'll have to get lucky and get a buck to come through during that rut that hasn't been in the area yet and doesn't know you've been sitting there. Pre Rut usually is Like Oct 15- Nov 1 "ISH" and Rut is Nov 2- Nov 20. something like that - very general guidelines there.
might be a dumb question but if you say hunting early in the morning because of low temperatures the deer will be more active; how do you get out there without spooking them?
As I watch your videos I believe I maybe have lost core bucks for whatever reason However I have a stand 100 yards away from a bedding area I have scraps and rubs all around me with non shooter bucks on camera during the day light hours but just not seeing the shooter bucks on camera and the stand has not been hunted since it has been put up. As always great video I know you are a busy man but any advice would be great thanks!
Hi Jeff, I've been a big fan of your videos. I'm in NW OH, is it safe to assume we're in the pre rut phase? Is now a good time for light rattling or calling?
I have been seeing a ton of deer lately on a new property I got permission to hunt that is 80 acres of fields with very limited woods and the Kickapoo running through the middle of it. No matter what I do 60 yard's is the barrier they just won't break. These Doe come out in different spots every evening, makes it hard to pattern em. I'm going to try something different and see if I can get a few of em. The one condition to hunting this place is I can't be picky. With Organic corn going in the farmer just wants deer gone. Haven't told him I've been seeing about 25 to 30 of em every night yet.
Hmmm, my core bucks must be lazy here in Pike County, Ill....they're never moving in the morning - no matter what the weather. I blast them 100% of the time in the afternoon and evening.
@@chief5981 Ha yup! Tons of conflicting info. I just go with what's happening for real on my property and go with it. These pro hunter all-hype online guys provide lots of comic relief in my opinion which is why I watch their videos. I wish my big bucks were around in the morning, because tracking a shot deer at night sucks!
I have always heard about the temp drop that you are talking about in this video. But what is that. EX 65 in the after noon going down to 45 by sunset. or 45 one morning going to 25 the next morning.
What if the front passes in the middle of the day like 2pm? Should we expect them to move midday because of the storm passing when they'd normally be bedded down?
I’m in a massive travel corridor about 1,200yds back in the hardwoods I think I am the exception to sitting all day because it takes me 70min to get into my blind. And I’m in public where deer will go to to get away from other hunters.
Question roughly 1 acer swamp dogwood thickets tall grass in middle of corn field no pressure the buck looks as if he doesnt move but 20 yards has everything. Right there there are a few nice trees that I can get in but they're right on the edge and I don't want to get busted what is your suggestions I can hit any side so wind isn't a problem and getting in there isn't a problem the problem is getting busted going up in my tree because his bedding so close to food and he has water food and those right there
Also not going in for a few more days thinking some doe in heat tossed 30 40 yards playing a 15 yard edge of wind in sock with rocks? Dumb idea or maybe??
I would definitely wait until a very good cold front morning, then go in during the morning only, set up on the downwind side and allow him to come in slightly at an angle to the wind from either side. Morning knlynforndure...still a week to 10 days out in most areas.
@@whitetailhabitatsolutions9751 Thank you for your input Sir ...Love the channel great information and entertaining by the way this is a. Michigan public overlooked area people hunt all around it .All thats in there are doe tracks and a good over 4 finger walking not running hoove prints Just a few scrapes and rubs but only walked egdes twice once in late August and once last week to see if still there made sure i didnt touch anything. Didn't want to blow him out with my scent or noise wish me luck 😆
I hunt in southern Minnesota and yesterday we had our first real snow fall and according to ur app it was supposed to be 0% but just from what ive seen i went out and it was the best day of the year it was snowing and in a cold front so why does your app say its so bad
Ho Cade...the best time is after the conditions clear...not during. I'm in MN and the movement was poor on 6 cell cams last night. When you are playing poker in the deer woods you can still wind with a bad hand at times...still lose with a good hand.
The app was accurate as I stayed out of hunting area until an 86% day... laid eyes on target buck... bad news is he smelled me I believe.... what’s your advice on what to do now Jeff?
@@jonesoutdoors9901 My favorite spot is a creek bottom, its a constant breeze downstream into a cutover, Ive just setup between the cutover and pasture in a thin strand of open timber with most of their trails on the opposite bank but in view.
@@huntermurphy2148 I’ve noticed when all the leaves fall off the trees the wind gets much steadier but by that time the gun hunters come in.... that makes it really challenging and at some point I have to go in after them or they will just get shot opening day of gun.
If I am going to setup between a food source and their bedding area for a morning sit, do I want that wind blowing away from the bedding area? It seems that if they are coming back to bed with the wind in their face, my hunt is already blown.
Thanks for the knowledge missed my biggest big I’ve ever had in front of me at 7 yards Tuesday night and never got a shot am losing sleep man Iowa public
Jeff - when you say that bucks will be cruising between bedding areas, do mean they will be cruising through buck bedding areas, back and forth between their bedding area and doe bedding, or all the above? Thanks for the vids man, I've learned a ton from you.
What time should I enter my stand in the morning I setup unknowingly in a heavy bedding area I also have food all around my stand which is one of your points not to do what would be the best time to get in the stand in the morning
What state are you from? Bc what you're saying compared to the treestands I've been hunting for my all day sits have been highly productive for mid day and evening cruising bucks. Also a lot of activity in the morning.
Oh Jeff Sturgis dropped a video? I wonder if he's gonna talk about how important weather is 😂😂😂😂 Just busting your balls Jeff lol Ive seen more big bucks because of you! Good luck this year!
Thank you for your videos jeff.ive been bowhunting for 38 years and just when I thought I knew you show me something different.ive been a regular watcher since I've discovered utube.if you had to choose a date on the calendar to call the beginning of the prerut, what date would you choose? I go by Halloween or the last week of october.in your professional opinion is that somewhat correct?
Do bucks make any rubs after dark or are all rubs made during the daylight hours? Some places I see them on public land don’t make sense for daylight movement.

Man I love to hear that Jack...you are very welcome 🙏 Thank YOU!
Mr. Jeff, do you have any videos on how to find their bedding areas?
Walk around in the summer
Any advice?
This weekend in PA we're going from a high of 75 Friday to a high of 57 Saturday. Going to be about 35 Saturday morning
I hunt out of West Michigan and this past week I seen a couple yearling bucks chasing and 1 two year old chasing. Seemed a little early.
I love your videos,, I'm hunting right now with a 300 win mag , keep the videos coming , I'm in NC by the way it's legal to hunt Sunday
Thanks a lot Angelica...most of all GOOD LUCK in NC 🙂 Really appreciate your comments this morning!
Wish ny was like that
Where is it not legal to hunt Sunday? The morman hunting grounds?
My church is the church of the great outdoors
Thanks for the info ..! Hope to be able to apply some to our area .!
I’m not walking to the stand, I’m riding a bike, that’s awesome
Sincerely,
Jordan Tisdell
Real good vid Jeff thanks and good luck!!!
Great info. This guy knows his stuff. Check out your state's wildlife Commision, they have good maps (at least in NC) for each county.
But, what is that thing with all the pullies and the glow sight, lol. I've never shot one if those. Check out Clay Hayes.
Great video once again
Thank you Kestrel...really appreciate it and I hope that it helps folks out!
Hang in there buddy... it's easy to get discouraged. I am over 40 and have never killed a buck yet.
I’ll finish watching soon brother got to reload some 243 rounds in a bit GOD BLESS y’all Amen 🙏
No 243 brass around this year!
Love the videos. I was looking for the hunt cast app. Not seeing it? Do you got a link to the app? I don't want to download a bad app with similar app
"80 degrees is hot" lol And here I am in south Alabama thinking is getting nice out at 80 degrees. I wish we had real winters here like you do bud.
The videos with the bucks, are those all from trail cam video or sitting in a stand or combinations? Love the videos.
Good job dude thank you for your time and effort
Does a bait pile count as a food source? All food plots are dead here.been getting below 19 degrees at night
Because they are typically active in doe hit spots then...food sources, and not their bedding areas 😉
Do you think it would likely be pre rut now in the Southwestern portion of Virginia
Great video and information 🤠😊 really learned a lot, I got a doe Saturday uploaded the video on my other channel Wise Guys Outdoors 😃
Hmmm, my core bucks must be lazy here in Pike County, Ill....they're never moving in the morning - no matter what the weather. I blast them 100% of the time in the afternoon and evening.
I just watched a real tree video where they said morning pre rut sits are pointless. Conflicting info
FYI for all viewers. Don't respond to a gift message from WHS. it is a scam.
What is the exact name of the app? Huntcast? I ask because I can’t find it in my App Store.
Huntwise
I spooked a huge buck yesterday on my 4wheeler I searched the area and found his bedding area.. Will he be back? I want to put some attractants down.
What if the front passes in the middle of the day like 2pm? Should we expect them to move midday because of the storm passing when they'd normally be bedded down?
So you are in Bedford, So am I!
Does this apply to Illinois?
Do you ever go to any properties in northeast Georgia?
What if it is unseasonably cold? We have snow in my county thats has stuck for multiple days now. Temp isn't reaching 40
Jeff, what book do you recommend for a guy who hunts private and public land. I’m 100% NOT building any deer habitat, just hunting.
What time of year should I be scouting for bedding?
Do it again, but hunt the wind better
@@huntermurphy2148 thanks Hunter...it is specifically hard to hunt this area with a steady wind as it’s in a creek bottom.
Can you use grunt calls or rattling antlers during the pre rut?
Thanks for the knowledge missed my biggest big I’ve ever had in front of me at 7 yards Tuesday night and never got a shot am losing sleep man Iowa public
Jeff - when you say that bucks will be cruising between bedding areas, do mean they will be cruising through buck bedding areas, back and forth between their bedding area and doe bedding, or all the above? Thanks for the vids man, I've learned a ton from you.
Excellent video, thanks. ⚡👁⚡
You are very welcome!
What time should I enter my stand in the morning I setup unknowingly in a heavy bedding area I also have food all around my stand which is one of your points not to do what would be the best time to get in the stand in the morning
Morning brother
What state are you from? Bc what you're saying compared to the treestands I've been hunting for my all day sits have been highly productive for mid day and evening cruising bucks. Also a lot of activity in the morning.
Oh Jeff Sturgis dropped a video? I wonder if he's gonna talk about how important weather is 😂😂😂😂 Just busting your balls Jeff lol Ive seen more big bucks because of you! Good luck this year!
10 yards from tagging out tonight, so close yet so far away
When does the pre rut generally start in Northwestern Ohio?
Ummmm is is hunt cast or hint wise???
Do you have any tips on how to hunt bucks on big open fieldswhere half touches big woods and the rest is open fields. Could they Cruze edges?
Thank you for your videos jeff.ive been bowhunting for 38 years and just when I thought I knew you show me something different.ive been a regular watcher since I've discovered utube.if you had to choose a date on the calendar to call the beginning of the prerut, what date would you choose? I go by Halloween or the last week of october.in your professional opinion is that somewhat correct?
what’s the lowest percentage you would hunt on? thanks jeff!
I see a hunt wise app but nothin thats called hunt cast..What am i missing
Do you use the sent killer detergent when washing your clothes?
Do bucks make any rubs after dark or are all rubs made during the daylight hours? Some places I see them on public land don’t make sense for daylight movement.
When can I expect the rut to start in upstate NY?
Pre rut daykight activity when colder during day and within a week to 10 days at most...
Where can i find hunt cast, it doesn't come up in the app store, thanks.
Hey Jeff how many pts have you seen a buck put on from one year to the next? 6 to 12 possible?
I have about 7 different young bucks on my property .Very very seldom is there a mature buck on this land, usually at the very end of the season.
