Metallica doesn’t sound like this anymore

- This is my all time favorite Marshall 80’s guitar tone. If I’m not mistaken Metallica had to borrow some Marshall amps to record this album and they had to use a tube screamer in front to get more saturation out of it and that’s how they came up with this huge raw ultra saturated guitar tone that has aged like wine almost 40 years after. Probably the album with the most gain for sure? Thanks for watching 🤘

Single takes definitely demand higher gain, but the real gold comes from lower gain multi tracking in this album. That's the *chef's kiss* for a monster tone
That's correct, sir.
Ofc you're right
Playing with less dirt is the easy part. Flawlessly matching each performance takes more effort, although I wonder if they slowed down the tape to get better results, as there seems to be tuning discrepancies from song to song, sometimes part to part.
when i record stuff like this i always use hi gain amp sims, usually with drive and volume pretty high. idk, it works for me
I love the RTL tone. It doesn't sound super gainy to me, but maybe the overall reverb on the album makes the tone sound more wet or saturated?
They layered the guitars is why it sounds so thick
I’m almost certain Fleming was using the aphex at that time as well just hasn’t been mentioned you can hear the scoop in the mids.
@@totc6196 That apex you talk about, what it is?
@@raulsoares7381 aphex parametric eq they used it in the loop of the boogies take a look at Flemming Rasmussen notes.
@@totc6196 Thanks man!
And also they don't make gloomy, dark songs like they used to also. Most of the songs are basically pentatonic based riffs. Back in the days there were many more interesting notes being played.
i mean their riffs have always been mainly minor, blues pentatonic, phrygian or chromatic
Yeah because they're not a bunch of angry kids out to make a name for themselves. There's no reason to write gloomy songs anymore.
They have tons of gloomy songs since 91 lol what ? Kinda became their thing
I think its more about the mixing/production.
Their lyrics are far darker now
Dude that transition to fight fire with fire was so sick!!! Gave me chills
Factsssss he did it so smoothly
Best guitar tone metallica ever had, this album right here
master of puppets?
@SpaghettiSauce445 this is far better than the puppets tone, it sounds too muddy to me. Still love the tone, but it's not as good as ride the lightnings
Ajfa: Hold my statue
That tone is spot on! It’s Ride The Lightning all the way! Metallica’s first four albums all had unique and amazing sounding guitar tones. With that being said, people can say what they want about Metallica but James Hetfield truly is a Riff F*cking Master!🤘🏻😎
Great job as always. I wonder if you can make a tutorial video about blending amps and stuff. The internet is literally lacking about this topic and you seem to know what you're doing :)
you should play some 72 seasons riffs with the same tone as rtl and do a comparison
Killer tone, good job
sounds perfect and excellently played!
1:33
All of us love this moment😄
Perfect tone
bro 0-3-2-1 riff is HEAAAVYYY
You nailed the tone!
1:13 you can see him shifting the pick in his hand to prep for FFwF
Awesome!
While I still prefer the mesa boogie mark ii era tones (between master and the black album), this sounds killer too
Great sound. What kind of pickups do you use in your Explorer?
can you please play a few riffs from the new album with this tone?
Pretty good GuiToobing dude! That was the first song I learned all the way through by ear in 1988 through my Sears catalog headless guitar, CRATE G-20 and Boss orange DS-1... with practice and dialing in tones, pretty soon you can play MOP like Slayer... no downpicking!!
The new guitar tone sounds like rock
It’s boring as fuck.
I was hoping you'd play that riff from fight fire with fire 🔥
damn you can even hear the overtones when you palm mute the powerchords just like on the album. Sick job!
Love it
What gear do you use?
Jcm800 model?? With Duncan pickup?
patch please or guitar amplifier setting please
Well, thanks, and how you achieved this sound?
There are two video game soundtrack songs that I think sound like Ride the Lightning - Fight On from Final Fantasy VII and An Obstacle in our Path (also called The One That Gets in Our Way IIRC) from Xenoblade Chronicles
Please video how to do this tone in fractal 🙏😁
Let’s gooooo
Best album ever
Pls tell me the amp settings for 0.31 and 1.02
and say it with me everyone "and that's okay" big bad Metallica can't hurt you
what pickups do you use?
I would turn down the volume on ur guitar but that's very accurate
Not the amp* just the guitar
They’ve sounded different on every album.
Except for Hardwired and 72 Seasons
And load and reload 😼
@@alexeimoshonka Originally planned as a double album, and written during the same sessions.
Even so, they have differences.
@@AndDeathForAll82 🙀🙀🙀
@@alexeimoshonkaload and reload were written at the same time. Look at interview
What material are you using to achieve this sound?
Fractal audio system
wait!
they used to use the tube screamer after the amp signal?
I’ve been able to use my Marshall JVM 205H to get the old-school Metallica tone up until master of puppets.
The great sound!
When you are 70yrs old, you try playing like that on stage 8 nights a week!😂
He’s talking about the tone not the actual playing
@@glizsy well, if it's just that they dont sound like that. They only sound like that in Ride. Tone for Masters is different and for Justice, even more.
Theyre 60 and play 2 shows a weeo
they still do?
@@shitposter1000 google "M72 tour"
Tone is phenomenal.
Well, as a Marshall biased person, lol.
I'm going to record some RTL tone from DSL20H.
\m/
Did they use Mesa tones starting from Master album maybe?
Yep, but on MOP it was Mesa through Marshall power amp, shorting the pre-amp, as I have read several times.
The cuestión is why they doesnt sound like this anymore :/. Great job amazing tone !!!
And then there's hands, fingers, picks. But nonetheless, stellar tones, really liked it!
👍💜💥
What you used here?
which pickups are mounted on this guitar?
Himbuckers
*humbuckers
yeah ı know they are humbucker but which humbucker? emg? seymour duncan?
I don't know the pickups of the explorer, but on the lead guitar it seems EMG Bonebreakers
James Hetfield used Seymour Duncan Invader pickup on this album.
Correct
this is axe fx 3 right?
Nah man they can replicate the guitar sound. I wanna hear the vocals. I saw a video If Lux Æterna was on Kill Em All and the vocals on it we’re absolutely crazy
Does anyone sound like they did when they were 23 at 60? Cmon dude
Fuck Justice, this is my favourite Metallica tone!
I mean, Justice has a powerful low end making palm muted chugs sound outerworldly, but I'll never forget when I first heard the acoustic intro to FFWF ending, the guitars fading in and that riff kicking asses. Such a depth, such an ambience, such a feeling of massiveness.
exactly, and this tone doesn’t bury the bass
@@defaultdan7923 Doesn't quite bury it like Justice but still could be a bit more audible, especially during _my song_ !
Anyway I edited the post 'cause I sounded like a spastic moron.
That is alotof gain
Is it axe fx?
Things change . New sounds means new ideas .
A=444 tuning? 😊
FOR WHOM THE BELL TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLS
Im probably in the minority here, that the early albums just didnt have good a sound. Ride and Master had a good guitar tone, but the EQ I just dont love. (The Justice guitar tone is just brutally bad to my ears.)
I love the sound of the Black Album. To me, that theough Garage Inc is a professional sound that has been unmatched since, and before.
The RTL tone is too good
just a lil more practice , fuk yea! do it! DO IT!!!
It doesn't even sound like heavy metal anymore. They've taken all the aggression out of the sound.
Yes, and that is unfortunate.
Metallica would sound a lot better, if they changed their sound to be more powerful, like before, instead of sweet. Their rhythms in the new album are so low in volume and a bit muffled. They dont sound bright and in the face anymore. Even in the Black album, rhythms sound more low and mid, than high and everything is overshadowed by vocals and snare : D : D
Yep, i don't get new sound....
It sounds even better in some new songs
The more the merrier
No
Nope
Depends on the song
@@PhilipeCastilho na to much gain just makes it sound fuzzy and messy
What about heavy gain with noise gate?
You need a Marshall to get the early Metallica sound!!!
Clearly you don’t because he’s not using a Marshall.
Because everybody uses those fucking quad axe toys.
Metallica Killer tone is gone in the hardwired album
Yeah my 14 year old self would agree. Gain to 11 and no mids all the way. Im 43 now, realize the guitar is a midrange instrument. By no means mids to "10" but from 4-6 makes a huge difference. So does turning down the preamp gain/power amp gain. Tightens things up. People need to get out of 1986😂
I play with high mids all the time it’s totally weird how people hate on it. Like it’s uncool.
Kill switch engage have some of the best tones personally pleasing to my ear. High mids with cut low end for bright and clear attack when in low tunings .
@@Guitarist19887 Agreed...I think both camps get hate though, people who still scoop get crapped on alot in forums🤣
metallica sounds rather overdriven than distorted nowadays
Your point being?
Gee, times change don't they?
you mean megadeth?
It’s almost like they’re in their 60s and not their 20s 😱
this video is about tone
Didn’t sound like that back then either 😂
Honestly they sound like this live.
ikr. I wish they did. Their modern guitar tone is flat and dull. It's why I'll never trade my Marshall in for a Mesa.
Yea and James hated it
Their guitar sound nowadays is so muddy. There's no edge to it.
Ah??… they never did🤣
Not gonna like because It have 911 likes
Go to bed!
That’s because Metallica died Sept 27, 1986.
The heart left with Cliff
The soul left with jason
this is definitely the worst way I've seen anyone play this riff lmao 1:33
Didnt sound like this Anyway. Not hettfield tone. Same ball park tho. Nearly
I think ...And Justice For All's tone was much better. Ride The Lightning's is a bit too muddy
too much gain
That is never possible.
Hell no
@@JEKAZOL uh ok
@JEKAZOL okay, go track guitars with the gain all the way up and see how shit and muddy it sounds lol
How can that be? It's impossible, more is more.
Nice, good tone. I just DO NOT understand why Metallica continues to keep using such a horrid guitar tone in their modern records.
And you really think Metallica sounded like this??
LoL.
I wonder why Metallica uses that weak modern tone to play live
And now? The tone they have now is great. Tbh bell tolls is the fucking worst song of metallica
Buy real amp, don't you hear it?...
Now the gain is firmly between 2.75 and 2.77… 😢
No, no they don't...... Sucks too!
Apart from the black album, load and reload their current sound is better than any other record
