The Dark Eye (PC) Playthrough - NintendoComplete

- A playthrough of InScape's 1995 horror adventure game for PCs running Windows 3.1/95, The Dark Eye.
The Dark Eye isn't so much a game as it is an experience. It lacks the puzzles of similarly structured games like Myst, but once the story grabs you, you won't miss them. It features the works of Edgar Allan Poe, and through some incredibly disturbing and bizarre imagery puts together a plot that spans a few of his most famous works (The Tell-tale Heart, Berenice, The Mask of the Red Death, Annabelle Lee, and The Cask of Amontillado). Even cooler, especially for those that appreciate the literature, is how the game uses these stories to create a meta-narrative that draws a number of symbolic parallels to Poe's life. It's done very well, it's incredibly dark, and it'll have your attention in a vice-grip for the short while that it lasts.
The presentation in particular goes a long to selling the psychological horror at play. Even though the whole thing is built on Macromedia's Director, the Hollywood-produced character models are all hideously distorted humanoid forms done in stop-motion animation, and their pseudo-human appearances are beyond unsettling. The score is also excellent - it may not blind you with science, but Thomas Dolby's work on the soundtrack really complements, and is largely responsible for, the mood and tone striking all the right chords. Sorry, that was a terrible pun. I couldn't resist.
Anyway, it's the perfect game for this time of year. Just don't blame me if you can't sleep after watching it. I did warn you.

My dad was one of the creators of this game. Writer.
Woah
Your dad was responsible for scarring me as a kid, hah. This one always fascinated and creeped me out.
Such OP-ness 👀✨️
Your dad is a hero.
Your dad was EA Poe?
This insanely creepy and disturbing title is really about the most beautiful tribute Edgar Allan Poe could have asked for.
Sweet a full play through
Where can I find a copy of this game
TheLupin3222 ebay or Amazon are probably your best bet
NintendoComplete cool thank you
NintendoComplete well it looks like little nightmares mix with dream machine
I just love the idea of a story being told multiple times, but each time from a different perspective. Imagine this studio using the same style with Shakespeare's Othello or maybe ancient Greek tales like the story of Prometheus or Perseus.
Oh man, as long as they stayed true to the original, something like this for Othello would be incredible. Hard pass, though, if they did to it anything like that awful movie O.
none other than William S Burroughs doing voicework, never thought i'd see the day, thanks for the upload
Easily some of the best voice acting of any point-and-click era adventure game. This one is truly haunting. Thank you for preserving it here!
Holy throwback I loved this game as a kid. Gave me my love for Edgar Alan Poe.
I was amazed to find out that uncle Edwin was voiced by non-other than William S Burroughs and he also narrated the Masque of the red death and Annabell Lee.
He also did “Seven Souls” on the first episode of the final season of The Sopranos.
He also voiced a depraved pedophile in real life! Chilling.
1:10
The opening narration is a slightly alternated version of the opening to The Black Cat.
"For the most wild, yet most homely narrative which I am about to pen, I neither expect nor solicit belief. Mad indeed would I be to expect it, in a case where my very senses reject their own evidence. Yet, mad am I not - and very surely do I not dream."
Thank you for uploading this it really means a lot to me! I remember being a kid and watching one of my cousins play this on the computer, thus started my fascination with Edgar Allan Poe and William S Burroughs! But I just want to say... If Edgar Allan Poe were alive to see this I think he would be overjoyed in tears that this is all at once a terrifying dark and Strangely Beautiful tribute to his work. This proves that for many years he has touched upon our very souls and he will never be forgotten.
my first Edgar Allan Poe tale ..Masqurade of Red Death ...this is a well done game based on his works
The voice acting is incredible! Combined with the beautiful claymation it's an amazing experience.
It never occurred to me but in The Telltale Heart the killer might have actually been listening to his OWN heartbeat
That makes so much sense and I never thought of it.
I feel like an idiot. What a brilliant writer Poe was.
A copy is available at the internet archive for those who want to download and play it. You will have to use an emulator that runs an older windows, obviously.
My, my my. One of my FAVORITE titles ever. I try to introduce nearly everyone I meet to this game. I just can't describe how perfectly everything worked together for me.
Grew up with this game on my Windows PC growing up. Great story-telling. Have this on CD-rom somewhere. Thanks for the memories. :)
Gameplay doesn't look like much, but I love the game's visual style. Claymation naturally looks a little creepy and they really took that advantage of that. Also, William S. Burroughs and Edgar Allan Poe both in a video game - you don't see that every day.

Geez that old man just zooms over to the pot of soup then zooms back without spilling the soup.
RIP, Russell Lees, the writer/creator of this game. He died on January 10th at 64 years old.
Man, first PC game I played as a kid. I still think about it now and then. Thanks for running through it!
Okay, for everyone who is very confused by the ending, this is the explanation:
The game does not specify the year in which it is set, but based on clothing and technology it appears to be in the late 1800s. The player character, whose name is never divulged, is visiting his uncle Edwin. The player first meets Edwin's assistant and then Edwin himself. He later meets Henry, the protagonist's brother, a young businessman who desires the hand of Elise, in marriage. The character then starts to take ill effects from the paint thinner Edwin was using while painting, and the player character passes out and has a nightmarish dream.
After the protagonist wakes, Henry relates his desperate situation: Edwin deeply disapproves of his love for Elise. Another nightmare follows, after which the protagonist encounters Elise, who asks her to give Henry a note. After another nightmare, the player learns that Elise has taken ill. The protagonist sees Henry and gives him Elise's note, then follows him to find that Elise has died. Edwin explains that the ground is too marshy for a proper burial, so Henry, Edwin, and Edwin's Assistant take her body into the basement of the house. Henry requests that a lantern be left nearby in case she revives.
Edwin takes the player aside and states that Henry is mentally unstable. Edwin forges a note from Elise asking Henry to meet her on the cliff outside of the house. The protagonist hands it to Henry, who then dashes out of the house. As Henry stands on the cliff, yelling for Elise, an enormous wave hits him. Watching from afar, the player can see that he is unharmed, although Edwin's assistant approaches Henry and starts a scuffle. In the course of the fight, the assistant shoves Henry off the cliff and into the sea.
Edwin lays the blame for all these events upon the player character, causing him to spiral down into a fit of insanity. Upon returning to reality, the protagonist discovers that Elise, still alive, has broken out of her coffin and gouged out her own eyes. This gruesome sight destroys the protagonist's sanity, and the game ends.
@@saherahnoor listen to Uncle Edwin's earliest lines in the story. It forshadows the bit with her eyes
They could have gone to Wikipedia to get that as well lol. Still valuable to include the plot breakdown from Wiki in the comments, but you should have cited your source considering you just copied and pasted.
@@westondavis1284 Why would I need to quote my source? Ain't no essay man. Plus, many don't get the idea that it might have a wikipedia article, so they look into the comments for interpretations.
Incredible artstyle - you see this game once, you will never forget it. I can recall playing it for the first time back in the late 90s, and it was a one-of-a-kind experience. Very surreal and disturbing indeed... I wish someone made a game in a similar style nowadays. :)
Mariusz Bosy Seriously, I'd love to see something else like it.
Absolutely. And for all the times I've played this I've NEVER heard that musical sting at the approach to the house. Aside from that I'm certain I could recite every single line of dialogue :)
hah watching these games I keep half-expecting jump scares. But then I remember these games were made before jump scares existed! ahhh so refreshing xD
you don't need jump scares when the characters look this creepy!
Nah there were actually jump scares around that point and before hand, but without advanced graphics, they only worked on kids cause of their overactive imagination. Sitll existed though fer sure :P
There was a jump scare at some point when you went into a room and looked at paintings. A woman starts to faint and it’s one of the scariest things ever.
This was one of my favorite games growing up. I wish this would be reinvented for modern gaming
I absolutely loved this game and have been searching for it everywhere. This reading of Annabel Lee is my favorite.
I've hoped for years that someone would revive this concept for a game with a more modern approach. A point and click game combining stopmotion graphics and some grim subject matter. If it was a little more user friendly and adjusted to look modern it could be a really promising idea.
Point and click simply doesn't sell in this day and age. Even indie devs aren't touching the genre which is a damn shame.
The only devs still around are Revolution Software i believe (Broken Sword series) but there are tons of classics out there so it's all good.
"Don't be sad it's over. Be glad it happened"
~ Epiclitus.
As a random side note: The guy who voices the Uncle in this game killed his own wife in a "William Tell" game gone wrong. Guy tried to shoot a bottle off of his wife's head with a revolver and failed. Didn't serve any time since this happened in Mexico and the authorities there didn't really seem to care.
@@datatsushi2016that sounds like a story that a husband who murdered his wife made up.
Love the idea of this game but it's clearly a product of it's time. It was a hassle trying to navigate screens. Dealt with some compatibility issues and just decided to drop it. Thanks for showing your playthrough.
Holy crap what an experience, I usually don’t get scared very easily by games but wow the Berenice segment was horrifying! I don’t think I’ll be sleeping tonight with her dead eyes and scary teeth in my head.
A classic game, and a wonderful playthough. Thanks!
This brings back such great memories!
Daamn this graphics give me creeps. Reminds a bit of Monty Python animations =/
Catinkontti it was made in clay. Haven’t look up in description
Good thing I stumbled upon your channel while looking for Gabriel Knight, decent playthrough of this one here was really hard to find on YT, probably due to it's title shared with some shitty rpg. It was well worth watching, truly amazing. One of the very few truly unique games, thanks yet again for this
GOD I appreciate your work!! Where do you find the time to film so many videos? So MANY rare games!! It's wonderful!
+Warren Johnson Thanks! :) Many of them have been recorded well in advance of the upload - it would be insane to try to play them at that pace! I'm glad you like the picks, I really do try to hit stuff that hasn't already been covered a millions times before already on RUclips!
Do you take requests?
deadwalke Sure, sometimes. What did you have in mind?
NintendoComplete Do you have X-Men Legends?
No, sorry. I haven't got that one.
wow I've never heard of this before but it's really cool.
I heard of it a long time ago, if you remember a show called Xplay, which was on G4... god rest the show.
I‘m very late but nontheless: Thank you so much for this upload. This game freaked me out completely back in the day and seeing it again furthers my admiration for the style. There‘s just next to no one who‘s experimenting with what games could be in an artistic sense. Inscape was ahead of its time.
Np. I really loved this one too.
This is great, mate. Thanks for doing this!
Thanks for all Walkthrough
i used to play this on macintosh in the 90s when i was in grade school
I loved the look and themes of this game. Retro as I like it!
THIS game! Man it was impactful as a kid. Wish they would re-release it.
Wow this game looks amazing and the big box pc version has equally great looking box art glad to have a copy
POE: Nothing else on Horror Earth even comes close!
Tom Kane is a legendary one.
17:35 reminds me the simpsons moment with mr burns
I was made aware of the game around back in 2008, but I was unable to neither get my hands on it nor find a good playthrough. Even if I have completely missed out on it, its nice to finally get to see it
It's not scare, it's artistic :)
I love the pre-rendered backgrounds in this game, if someone can tell me I wanna know how they were made
I just watched this and I still don't know what's going on.
Edgar Allan Poe works had a game?
Oswald Epic Loquendero of course it was
What story or poem?
Am I the only one noticing some of the charaters are missing dialogs?
I'm really mad that I can't get this working on Windows 10. It's such a great game!!
You can play it with a PC emulator. Theres many tutorial and guide to install it.
This is awesome
Remember finding this in my dad's pile of games and putting it on and being terrified lmao. I think I was 6
I used to have this game back in the day, it was creepy af.
This scared the piss out of me when I played it.
this very gave me a great dreamcore or rather great work art
i loved playing this game. but somehow you did it out of order. Berenice and the Masque of the Red Death are switched. That's why, in your video, it jumps back to the Masque tapestry or whatever, immediately after you see the teeth fall out. the fight on the cliff is supposed to be the climax, and not precede just another 1st person short story perspective. it's been years since i played it. you hit all the scenes but somehow i hit them in a different order that flowed better IMO
This game made me so sad. Especially the ending :(
So, did the devs just hedge their bets that their audience, likely fans of horror, wouldn’t notice that the game’s intro melody is just the main theme from the Phantasm series of movies, only with one note changed?
I remember this game I remember finishing it and wondering if I actually finished it cause the way it ended confused me yep still as confusing as before guess I finished the game then well kudos to me
Where can I buy this game
Nice
This game would be perfect for Ross' Game Dungeon.
It's too bad not on GoG or Steam.
Vainglory 2KW8Ω but maybe repress on 25th anniversary might be happening. Or was it announced secretly that is usually hidden?
Someone should have made a remake of this
Where can I find this??
NintendoComplete, I'm considering the prospect of making my own long-form review of The Dark Eye, and I've now played through the entire game to record my own footage. Unfortunately, I was not able to make the game's animations or sound design match up with the version in your recording; the characters in my game have this pixelated transnational effect as they move (though only every once in a while), and the beginning of their sentences are often cut off. As a result, could I instead use your playthough for my review? Crediting you in the video and description, of course.
Ah, I know how that goes when footage gets messed up. That sucks. Sure thing, I don't mind. Lemme know when it's done, I'd like to see it.
@@NintendoComplete Thank you so much! The project is a little intimidating for me as a limited content creator, but I feel like I strongly want to accomplish it, so I'll comment here if I finish the video in the coming months (I do need to invest in a slightly better voice setup for it first lol). Thank you for still reading the comments after all these years!
@@wildebur Np, and good luck!
bro entering god mode, playing creepy ass game for 2 hour 💀
Is there a way I can run this on Windows 10?

I found this on iceberg video so I was curious about it
🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
1:04:29 was spongebob referencing this game?
This game was made before spongebob, so no
This scene from the game and that scene from Spongebob both draw from the same story by Edgar Allan Poe. Although Spongebob was playing it for laughs
Ms dos
Firstly I have no idea what the story is and second this is a confusing game
All of it is based on Edgar Allan Poe's stories. You have to read them to understand this well.
Marvelous. Haha. What?
What even is this game?!?!?!?!?!??!?
geez 20 minutes of gramps blabbering about the red death used to bore me to death as a kid in the 90s, 30 yrs later and it bores me even more now lmao
