  • A playthrough of Rapid Pulse Entertainment and Acclaim's 1996 horror adventure game for PCs running Windows 3.1/95, Bad Mojo.
This recording is of the original 1996 CD release, not of the 2004 enhanced Redux version.
After the true ending and the credit roll I've placed recordings of the three possible bad endings (1:25:41, 1:26:52, and 1:29:05). They're all quite different from one another, and they're all pretty depressing.
I was really trying to think of a really scary and/or creepy game to play for Halloween when I remembered this gem. My sister and I played the demo from a PC Gamer demo CD SOOO many times over, but we never had the full game. Years later when Bad Mojo Redux was released I grabbed it cheap and played it relentlessly for a few weeks.
You play an entomologist who becomes a cockroach. Yeah, he's quite blatantly a somewhat one-dimensional Gregor Samsa plonked in a modern-day hovel of a bar/apartment. You control the roach from a bird's-eye view as you explore the disgustingly filthy building on some contrived quest for self-identity.
While that might not sound totally positive, this game is as thoroughly awesome as it is unique and uncomfortable. The environments are incredibly well done (it's an amazing show of what can be done in 256 colors) and easy to navigate, but they are loaded with things like squirming larvae, a nest of squirming newborn mice, butchered rodents - it is not something for the squeamish. The soundtrack is also brilliantly done - it's very 90s, and oftentimes the heavily electronic music and sound effects unsettle even more than the visuals.
The controls are obnoxiously sensitive, but they're great in how simple they are - the only keys needed are the arrows. The space bar enters a menu. That's it.
All in all, this is a stellar game that doesn't feel its age in the slightest, and is still unlike just about anything else out there, even 20 years after its release.
Just try to forgive it for the random and shameless (though fairly subtle) advertising of Iron Helix. Ugh.

I feel like the best games of our generation came from an era that will never be again. Ideas were still original, so much was open territory and hadn’t been done yet. I suppose it’s Better to appreciate their sheer beauty and originality rather than hope for a remake or something anywhere like it. The 1990’s were a decade that will always be dear to me.

      @@asterlofts1565 Look at
Athenian rhapsody - basically earthbound + undertale with the same vibes but updated.
Don't feed the monkeys 2099 - As imaginative and bizarre as bad mojo with equally unique gameplay.
Hypnospace outlaw - 90s surrealism at it's finest. Makes you nostalgic for things that don't exist.
Final Fight Ultimate LNS - A fever dream of a 90's beat em up. It's like if you mashed up all the greatest beat em ups and then added 75 characters with fleshed out movesets complete with multiple supers, parry button, and marvel vs 2 level combos. It has battletoads difficulty.
Dead End Road - Feels like something you'd play on ps1, not the longest or deep gameplay wise, but atmosphere is turned up to 11, worth experiencing.
Cobalt Core - Has the spirit of a retro game with up to date polish, lots of replay value. Like Yu Gi Oh mixed pokemon and inception.
The Last Spell - Like final fantasy tactics + the binding of isaac but with massive scale battles, you are taking down groups of enemies at once. Gorgeous pixel art.
Barony/Delver - Like an infinitely replayable ps1 roguelike with hi res pixel art.
Last Command - Really bizarre experience, equally trippy and fun, very unique retro type gameplay with modern replayability and variety. Could have been a ps1/snes game.
Knuckle Sandwich - This one looks like a ps1 game, another fever dream of a game like Athenian Rhapsody, like Earthbound with chunky pixel art and a much darker yet cozy vibe. The cutscenes give ps1 era fmv feelings but with high resolution.
Chained Echoes/Sea of Stars - Two games that could have competed with Final Fantasy 3/6 or any of the greatest rpgs of that era. They may be better even with the nostalgia factor because they look and play like a 90s rpg.
Lobotomy Corp - Full of strange ideas and experimentation, feels like a ps1 game in that respect.
Megs Monster - Another great pixel art rpg with a very interesting twist.
World Of Horror - Strange narrative based roguelike with amazing Nes style visual in the style of Junji Ito
There are so many more, that era is still alive and well if you know where to look.

Here's a thing I don't get about this game. According to some sources, the protagonist is an entomologist (insect researcher) so he presumably has a university degree and yet he says he has a 'dead end' job and lives in a crummy apartment. Maybe he lives in that crap apartment so he can observe the infesting insects without leaving home? On a more serious note, the last bad ending really pulls on my heart strings. The game is full of poetic genius but that ending really stuns you. You don't know whether to jump off your seat and declare it awesome or start crying.

    • @vgamer11
      @vgamer11 7 лет назад +9

DancerInTheHeart I think what he meant by "dead end" was the fact that in spite of his research for a pesticide, he wasn't able to make much progress in the time that the university gave him, so he decided to just take all the funds he could and leave the country while he still could.

Thanks very much for showing this game! It's legit pretty freaking amazing. What an original concept, and they actually managed to make it work. The graphics, although just digitized pictures, are really neat, and the music is awesome as well. Also, the scene where the evil nun laughs at the crying child might just be the single greatest thing ever filmed. And finally, the guy playing Roger is possibly the worst actor in the history of the universe. :D
The landlord guy has to have the grossest apartment in history. My running tally: spiders, rat infestation including babies in a stack of newspapers, a slug, silverfish and an active ant colony in the bathroom, a somehow still breathing fish in the kitchen complete with blood trails running everywhere, termites in the freaking walls, and of course, a massive roach infestation. That dude would be already be dead living in those conditions. :)
Dang. Also had to add that the bad ending where both men die was pretty hardcore.

This would become similar to a later game that also takes a few elements from The Metamorphosis, which that game was also called. They're both about someone turning into a roach to solve a mystery.

Does anyone knows the name of this graphics' style? I'm searching for a game I played as a kid (and there's 15+ years of searching) that quite match this game's graphic style. The difference is that it's a platformer. PLEASE, DUDES. I NEED TO FIND THAT BEFORE I DIE.

    • @_WOR

Describe the game you mean more. The graphics style here is really just “pre-rendered” style.

    • @Bruno_Knoxx

@@_WOR It's a PC game, I played it in Windows 98/2000, around 2004. Platformer 2D game, Mario style, but with some visual elements that reminds me of Bad Mojo. The character is inside a witch's house, and he is tiny, really tiny, as he took a spell from the witch or something, because I remember having to push a soda can to make it fall off a shelf to put it on the top of another soda can to reach a certain "high" place.
The goal is kinda scape the house, I think. When you advance a stage, a map of the house is displayed, showing the next stages (rooms of the house, kitchen and backyard, for example).
One of the first stages was the kitchen, btw. I remember a certain part where the character had to pass through a stove and had to wait for the flames of each burner to turn off before walking. Those flames, specially, are visually very similar to the flames in Bad Mojo's stove.
Another element I can remember is that in the shelf mentioned before, the character had to avoid spiders. The spiders went up and down in their webs, and you have to wait until they go up to walk above them without die.
In one shelf, there were some cassette tapes with labels glued and handwritten.
I remember the game had Spanish language too and (maybe) portuguese, because those labels were written in Spanish when this language was selected.
Man, I search for this game for 15+ years. I never lost my hope in find it.

@@Bruno_Knoxx Ooh I almost want to say Hocus Pocus but the "escape the house" thing isn't quite in that one. Do you remember the main character any more, such as their clothing or style? I feel like I know what it might be based on the description of the levels so the character themselves could help me narrow it down.

    • @Bruno_Knoxx
      @Bruno_Knoxx 7 месяцев назад

This is something I can't remember well; the clothes. I remember that the character's moves were much more fluid than Hocus Pocus'. The visuals looked newer too. Actually, the stages were well detailed.
There's (probably) one person alive that can help me with the name of this game; the teacher who let me play this game in the computer lab, but I can't find her contacts anywhere. I tried talking to people in the school she worked at that time and there's no record of her anymore, since it was 20 years ago :( @@_WOR

@@Bruno_Knoxx Tough one for sure. The whole escape the house thing rules out Harley’s Humongous Adventure too, plus that was a different console (unless your teacher emulated it). That one was too cartoonish as well so doubt it’s the one but there’s a level on a shelf with cans. I’ll keep digging!

Who else wants this game to get supported on ScummVM? Because the Steam version I have refuses to work on my 2022 Windows 11 Laptop & when I actually got it working on my older desktop PC, it is forced at fullscreen with an incredibly small scale surrounded by borders all around.

my favourite game - along some other games as piece of real art - on Kafka motif, allegorical interpretation of life history death. every room stuffed with not life items but this items (and music) tells us desperate history of to man on the edge of their life (forgotten and unhappy - in some sort of endless night - we feel it through the game) - we have some sort symphony here of dead items speaking to us (every item and their expositions with other - it was geniusly done) in allegorical manner (every room represent some cosmological and religion metaphor (and have some main meaning for man that dwell their) - for example - kitchen is representation of material death - som transition in other state (at least i fill though)). We can fill all the history of this to man - their sadness and lonlyness through this game. (Только вот озвучка мне больше нравится СПК русская - более аллегорическое значение)
