- A complete playthrough of Readysoft's 1996 PC interactive movie, Brain Dead 13.
Brain Dead 13 is a pretty fantastic 90s homage to the 80s Laserdisc classics like Dragon's Lair and Space Ace. It might not be the work of Don Bluth and co., but it's a pretty fantastic effort. It's colorful, extremely well animated, loaded with hilarious and violent humor, and easily exceeds the standard Saturday morning cartoon in its production values.
When I say violent, though, I mean violent. As in, a Teen rating would have been pretty unlikely back in the day if the review board actually saw all of the content in the game. A true credit to those moral crusaders, though - this title received the K-A rating. You can take a look for yourself, a compilation of all of the death animations begins after the closing credits.
The main game, without any deaths, played through the debug menu's demonstration mode, runs from the beginning through the end credits. I did record the entire thing playing without the debug mode, but the key-press sound effects got a bit grating, so I rerecorded it with the computer playing, leaving these sound effects out.
The collection of animated death scenes begins at 34:38 and runs through the end of the video. Continuing the trend in many of the games I've uploaded this month, I chose this one because of how appropriate it seemed with Halloween being the day after tomorrow. I loved this game as a kid - my dad bought me a copy at a used games shop in Stanmore (London) when I was in the 7th grade and I played it to death. Does anyone else remember the box that it came in? That stupid yellow pillar shaped one that kind of resembled the Jenga packaging? I hated that box. It wouldn't sit nicely on the shelf next to all of my other big box PC games. Just like the Gabriel Knight CD edition, with it's retarded LSD inspired pointy stuck-together-triangles shaped box. Between them, I really grew to resent the mess they turned any space they occupied into. I'm not sure why, but I've never been able to let that one go - who the hell thought a giant yellow box shaped like a Saltines carton was a good idea?

My current animation teacher was the director for this game!! So cool hearing him talking about it only a few months ago, saying how he still gets fan mail for the game! I just had to search it up and watch through the whole playthrough. Honoured to have been taught by him this past year, such an incredible animator.

There were tons of games with art styles like this. One that comes to mind right away is Jersey Devil on PS1.

Let me sum up this game: a survival horror game with a lot of Looney Tunes undertones that is done in the style of Dragon's Lair.
Clearly an underrated gem of a game.

ehh I don’t know about the underrated gem part. Sure the animation is nice, but it’s not really something you need to play these days. You can practically get the same experience from watching a playthrough online that you could playing the game yourself. A big reason games like this died out was that they were nothing more than movies with occasionally quick time events.

I remember being absolutely shocked by the death scenes in this one in relation to its rating. ESPECIALLY the one where Fritz sneaks up behind him, plants his hooks in Lance's eyes, and rips him apart.
I was on a field trip in Baltimore when we stopped at a Mall on our way home. I had 20 bucks left, and went to an EbGames where I had a choice between Crow: City of Angels for PSX (I was a HUGE Crow fan at the time) or this. I think I made the right damn decision.

Technically it was a mishearing. Lance was referring to an amount when he said average, as in he knows a typical amount of mad science villains from video games
A most awesomely violent tribute to the Dragon's Lair style of gameplay, complete with disembodied brain/mad scientist, mansion full of murderous abominations, and an Elvira lookalike with even bigger jugs.
This was pretty amazing to play when it was new, and it's still incredible to experience today :D

I would love a sequel since I do love this game, but a sequel probably wouldn’t do well unless the gameplay was massively changed up. Games like these died out a long time ago.

An Irish American repair man running through a castle of horrors trying not to get killed by monsters because he insulted a disembodied mad scientist.
My mans is being chased and has a bunch of chances to die, but he can make a stop and say “hiya pal” to a statue.
all things considered, the fact that lance made it out alive is nothing sort of a miracle

This game was wayyyy ahead of its time.
You know.. i gotta wonder, what would it be like if it featured more monster bosses.. Like a zombie who's fond of dancing or a Werewolf who hosts a quiz show or a ghoul who's a directing coach. Would be interesting to have those creatures as a general expansion.
I like how this reads as a whole cartoon more so than Dragon Lair does. With those, you kind of have to keep the "game aspect" in mind most of the time.

Yeah it's kind of all there in the opening cutscene he's a freaking brain and nothing more and he was shown giving Fritz instructions on how to fix it but it wasn't working because well Fritz doesn't have hands either. And clearly Fritz is kind of stupid

Ok, Dragon's Lair at least had flashes that would tell you where to go. This game clearly shows absolutely no direction whatsoever. so how are we suppose to know what are we suppose to do?

I think you just press right or left or something at that point. i had this for Playstation 1 many years ago. It was on 2 CD's. The dumbest thing was having to switch CD's whenever you went to certain parts of the game. since it was non-linear, you often had to switch cd's during gameplay depending on where you went. :-O

Because of his facial structure and he is red headed. They both met up with different monsters and they wore colorful clothes like green and yellow. That means that Johnathan uncannily resembled Lance of Brain Dead 13.

I think that it's just recorded at a lower quality than we are used to at this point (being on CD instead of DVD, and that a 2x drive could only funnel data at a max 300k/sec) This is how is really sounds though

I've played the 3DO version of this, and honestly I found it to be a huge chore to play... It's interesting how it's somewhat non-linear, but I got annoyed with it so quickly because there's litterally no indication on the commands you need to input for the QTEs. It's so unclear. I'm usually really good at QTE games like Space Ace, Time Gal, Road Avenger, etc.

I played it with my brother and honestly, this was fucking annoying. We sometimes couldn't here the 'bings' so we would often die.
We eventually won after 3 years, so let's see if your the gud one.
@@therayreviewer8878 It doesn't really help much as you still don't have any visual clue of what direction to press except for very specific situations. Given that you have 5 different options to press (Up, Down, Left, Right, Action), you don't get much time to guess the right choice in some cases.

+La Mazmorra Abandon There's a debug menu that will give you the option to play the videos in sequence. I don't recall how to get to it, but I'm pretty sure I found it just by Googling.
Do you remember if you access the debug menu through DOSBox? I'm trying it with all the executables without success :(
It's solved :) The version I was playing doesn't include the correct file in order to activate the debug mode.

Wow, it really is just like Dragon's Lair, with mirror mode of stuff we've seen already.
Quick question (that no one will answer but whatever): When I saw a deaths compilation, it looked like Lance could die in many different ways just from standing still too long or going down a certain path. Sometimes immediately, like as soon as he enters a room. Yet when this playthru goes down a path, they don’t die at all. Do QTE reactions have to be THAT quick to avoid immediate death?
It's not them playing. The game makes a noise when you get something wrong and something right.
Fritz, Vivi, and Moose... I imagine that they are in the first Care Bears Movie when they're humans.
They gotta bring these kinds of games back, the kind that are mainly one big movie that are interactive.

I like the reference with that hook hand freak parodying the scissorman from clock tower,the game also looks pretty cool as well resembling allot dragon's lair and space ace.I remember people referring to the movie title brain dead putting also 13 in the end,and now i see that brain dead 13 was a game.Worth mention that the movie has also the alternative title dead alive.Cool playthrough i will subscribe man!
