I thought for a while I was young again and climbing signal Hill. I dreamed again of the sun rise as I braved the morning chill. I climbed with you and I felt the chill as I breathed the ocean air and sat on the rocks beside you as you settled in a chair. Thanks for the climb, I loved it as memories crowded my mind. Thanks for it allI, I enjoyed the beer. …ice berg is my favourite leven…. you made my day cause I can’t do it now,fot now I’ve reached 87😂. Lol just a little poem to serenade you this morning wherever you are at this time. Needless to say, I loved the walk.
Every time you see a travel show or brochure concerning Canada, it is always centred on Toronto, Montreal or the Rockies. The Atlantic provinces are always under-represented so well done for making such a great series of videos. The fact that people hardly ever mention the Atlantic coast makes it very appealing for a visit soon.
Thank you for showing, I live in mount pearl, not too far from st. johns, not many from away come our way but its still nice to see videos such as this showing our way of life, so thank you.
Those pairs of red chairs can be found right across the Trans Canada Trail system. They were placed at spots that offer an exceptionally beautiful viewing point, inviting the hiker to take a peaceful little rest and just soak in the scenic view! The chairs were installed by the Government of Canada in 2017 as part of the Canada Sesquicentennial Celebrations (150th anniversary of the confederation of Canada as a nation on July 1, 1867). You've made three absolutely stellar videos of the walks around my beautiful city, St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, and I just wanted to thank you for them! ❤🇨🇦❤
@@steve-marsh You're kindly welcome! Oh, by the way, we pronounce Quidi Vidi as Kitty Vitty, but I love your pronunciation with your gorgeous accent, too!😉
I love how Alicja appreciates handmade crafts, and the value of the time artisans put into them. That’s rare. Thanks for another great look at the St Johns area. It’s soo picturesque.
Thanks for taking us along on your jaunt in this video. You two have a nice comfortable style in your presentation which makes one feel like we are there with you. Well done today and I look forward to your next Newfie adventure.
The joy in Alicja's voice after she was told she could get a beer, priceless. Yet another delightful video from a very beautiful part of the world, thank you so much and stay safe and well, cheers from Oz.
Sometime before 1926 when he emigrated to Brooklyn my father in law was helmsman on a Bluenose sailing from St. Johns to Jamaica. The best experience of his life.
I’m Canadian and Newfoundland is the sole province / territory I have not visited. This series is so enjoyable. It has exposed me to things I would not have thought to go looking for so thank you. A visit just moved up my list. Be well.
What a great way to start my day! Signal Hill and Quidy Vidi! We’ve always pronounced it Kiddy Vidi. Can’t tell you how thrilled I am to watch some of my favorite places in the world. It’s a grand start to my day!! Many thanks!! Actually, there are 3 seasons. Fall, which is wonderful grand, winter, which can be challenging, and summer, which is filled with beautiful skies, wonderful sights and heaven.
Out of interest the first radio signal transmitted over water by Marconi was from Lavernock Point South Wales to Flatholm Island in the Bristol Channel. Another fantastic video and a terrific walk, top stuff👍
I grew up just 1/2 mile up on Forest Road. I felt like I was walking along side you in this video retracing my visit back home in 2018 for 5 months, Feb-Jun. I call it Kitty Vidi. I’ve gone into the lil pub, Linda’s, after one of my walks. She was such a fun person to talk to, and that little pack jammed with stuff from floor to, and on, ceiling. Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for taking us along.
Loving your visit to Newfoundland . I've lived here for 20 odd years (ex Australia) and you ( and others like you) are bringing our wonderful province to not only other Canadians but the. world. And....I have Scottish heritage as well!!
A great hike. It brought back many memories of scrambling up, down and around Signal Hill sixty years ago. It's amazing how things have changed in what were among the "poorer" areas of the city back then, like the Battery and Quidi Vidi. Back then, we referred to Quidi Vidi as "The Gut" though mostly our visits down there was to Tucker's fishing stage which was owned by the father of a couple of the kids who were in our group. The Tucker premises became the crafts centre where Alicja bought the necklace. Quite a change to a building that was once used to house fishing gear and for salting cod.
Lovely video! We went to Prince Edward Island from Maryland a few years ago in our RV (caravan). This is a trip we want to make next. Steve, I keep hearing you say, “No rest for the weary.” The way I know the saying is, “No rest for the weary, and the wicked need none.” 😂
I was sitting in front of my computer getting exhausted watching you two walking up Signal Hill. I have done that a couple of times and it is quite the hike. It is very common to have a large fog bank sitting just offshore waiting to roll in as soon as the sun begins to set. I'm so glad that you managed to get some "good" weather during your trip. Looking forward to the next instalment. Another stellar video Steve & Alicja.
Hi Steve, thankyou for your different approach to globe trotting. My wife and I used to travel the world many years ago but sadly ill health prevents any kind of travelling now. So its lovely being able to tune into your show and visit some remarkeable places. As an equally canny scotsman( well half anyway) I like the useful tips saving money and time on your travels. Keep up the great work and "lang may yer lum reek" to you and your better half.
I am really enjoying this series Steve, you have really opened my eyes to St. John's I was aware of it but had never considered it a trip destination until now!
Another great adventure Steve and Alicia. Fantastic scenery on the way. Wow certainly a very long walk. Like you i would have been disappointed at the end that the pub was shut. Catch you on the next one mate.
I'm impressed by the time and effort that they've put into building all those boardwalks and steps. They look to be in good condition and probably fairly recent.
Few years back my brother and I went on a fishing charter and Jigging for Cod on the outskirts of Halifax harbour. What a great time we had and so many Cod were caught which we shared with the Captain.
Hello Steve, another nice video, thank you. Jigging is a fishing technique when you drop your line (most of the time a hand line) and haul it back a few inches then drop it again repeatedly. Usually, you use a lure such as a red/orange or yellow spoon to attract the fish. I did a lot of jigging through ice holes in Baffin Island for arctic char. So they must have had a fishing contest, and you should have entered!
Happy to see that you took the scenic trail to Signal Hill. It’s the only way to see the Narrows. I’ve been in St John’s in February and had pleasant weather. But, when an Atlantic storm comes up from New England the city is buried in snow.
Beautiful place! I'm from Ireland and it reminds me very much of the west coast with the craggy cliffs and headlands and the magnificent North Atlantic rolling in or thundering in depending on the weather. And I'm sure Steve, it also reminds you of the western isles of Scotland...on a sunny day of course which are, as you are well aware, just as rare over this side of the pond as they are in Newfoundland! I also find it amazing that the Newfies who are of Irish descent still retain a strong Irish accent (with a slight North American twang) 200 years or so since their ancestors first landed there! It shows how remote the place is from the North American mainland. Great scenery and walks, very friendly locals, good food, drink with great fiddle music and craic to be had in the many pubs there. A home from home on the other side of the Atlantic eh? Definitely on my bucket list of places to visit.
I've always been told that "mist" is light fog and that "fog" is thicker. Of course, "a wee Scotch mist" is an absolute downpour of monumental proportions! 😁 I'm enjoying your Newfoundland series and hope to visit again some time soon. Thanks.
Another great video, lovely buildings and seeing the narrow channel coming out from the St Johns harbour just reminded me of standing on the top deck of a cruise ship and thinking how good our ships pilot was....
I live here in St.John's, i have walked up those steps to Signal hill once, i have said ever since, never again! Lovely walk you folks had, loved the video and of course Welcome to old St.John's! 🙂
I'm sure people have already said that Quidi Vidi is pronounced Kiddy Viddy. In 1995 I walked most of the same trail with my dad, who is now gone, + although I was totally unprepared for what I'd see, it was 1 of the best experiences in my whole life! It's nothing short of spectacular! Especially to a prairie girl! I loved St. John's + the entire east coast but that walk is the very best thing we saw. NO video could ever show how very literally breathtaking it is to see that vista of the ocean begin to open up before you, just as you pass by the WW2 battlements on the opposite side. It was an emotional experience that I wasn't at all prepared for, so now I know what the word breathtaking really means! My most treasured pictures are from then, but we didn't know that it's just a sort jaunt down the other side into Quidi Vidi, or of course we would have done that too, instead of walking down the road to the modern hotel, and paying a fortune for tiny frozen lobster tails. We had missed lobster season, and I still don't know exactly when that is. We found many wonderful bars to go to, and since Newfies are by far the friendliest people in Canada, we were welcomed everywhere like family. Thank you so much for helping me relive that wonderful day. I literally cried, and still am crying. I love your accents, and I hope to visit Ireland some day. All the best to you both, and to all of your loved ones. ❤❤❤
Beautiful day and wonderful trails. It was disappointing the beer wasn’t the best after all that walking. Glad I had the time to watch this before your Saturday drop. All caught up now.
Hi Steve and Alicija...Liverpool Kev here again...What a lovely video thank you...these recent videos have brought back happy memories when I was a lot younger and fitter too...took a trip with two pals to New York Boston and Maine...Maine reminded me so much of St.Johns....We sold investments in the City of London back in the day and witnessed the Wall St crash of October 87 Black Monday...followed by flying into London the day after the famous hurricane that poor old Michael fish BBC said not to to worry about...from the air like a giant hand across the countryside...Happy memories Steve...you will remember these wonderful travel memories many years later like me...Take care as ever.....Liverpool Kev
Looking at historical data, the Maersk Clipper only seems to stick to that area, St John's, Terra Nova, etc, other than a trip or trips to Halifax and Maine. Love all your videos guys, especially the Scotland ones. We are only a couple miles from Lands End, but now regularly visit Scotland as our daughter now lives and works there. Always thought Cornwall (Kernow) was breathtaking, and we take it for granted, but Scotland, with its Lochs, Coastline, Mountains, Hills and forests is on another level 😍... Keep up the fantastic work. 👌👌👌

A wonderful video Steve of you and Alicia walking with humour up to signal hill. A walk I would never attempt. A pity about the beer, how can a brewery serve below par beer. You two are a Scottish treasure with a dash of Polish. Your videos are a master class in how to entertain. ATB
