Manchester United suffered a disappointing defeat to an impressive Tottenham on match day two of the Premier League 23/24 season, with Ange Postecoglou's side causing all sorts of problems in a 2-0 win. But were Erik ten Hag's players simply unlucky, or are worrying patterns emerging in Man Utd's play?
JJ Bull and Jon Mackenzie have analysed the match to find where Man Utd need to improve.

So cool as an Aussie seeing an Australian manager making the Premier League and seemingly getting respect straight away. I grew up with Aussie players playing in the major European leagues so the occasional talented Aussie succeeding in Europe wasn’t so far fetched but a Aussie manager managing in Europe always seemed so unlikely. Amazing achievement by Ange.

I think Bissouma being super press resistant was also a big part of this particular match. United had some success in pressing Porro, but once he moved wider/higher it meant Rashford or Bruno had to press Bissouma, who is better at dribbling than both of the players are at tackling.

They looked promising, especially for a team so early in a rebuild that also lost their star player.
But I think people are getting carried away. Through no action of Spurs, Man utd missed 2 sitters and were robbed of a penalty. It could have been 2 or 3-0 at half time which obviously changes the whole dynamic of the game. Don't get me wrong Man Utd were awful and deserved to lose but against opposition with better finishing Spurs would have been dead before the 2nd half. I think it was more a case of Man Utd being terrible than Spurs being great.

@@cianmulvey5552spurs have had lower xg against Brentford and Man Utd so might be slightly fortunate to an extent, but the reason Spurs fans are excited is that he made big calls at the weekend like Porro in for Emerson and Sarr in for Skipp and neither played badly and would be the more safe options against Man Utd but he went for it and got a bit of luck. Compared to Conte/Mourinho/Nuno though it's like night and day and enjoyable to watch again. The CD is very weak outside Romero and Van De Ven though and injury to either one and there could be a few high scoring games against Spurs

But I don’t doubt he’ll find solutions to his problems quite quickly. I can see Solomon starting over Son and Son moving to ST with Richarlison getting dropped. Because Son is a better natural striker than Richarlison and Spurs don’t need him to cut in like he used to.

@lhy8373 : I'm pretty sure all of that happened after Man Utd had their chances. Goals change games, by that point the whole dynamic would be different if they were 3 goals down. Again, they done very well compared to expectations and deserved to win over the course of the game but I really think people are getting carried away.

Really the game came down to Bissouma and Sarr being able to completely control the midfield when Man U was pressing by playing quick, well-timed passes outside to Son or Kulusexy.

  • @bigrandomun9267
    @bigrandomun9267 Год назад +16

I think Sarr and Bissouma were the issues for United because their midfield just couldn’t match them in the midfield.
Sarr was the phenomenal in both boxes and was frequently skipping past the United players and getting the ball forward. And Bissouma, like last week, was excellent at winning the all back and resisting the press whilst picking out Son and Kulusevski. Sarr mainly was so comfortable going forward that United’s midfield was overwhelmed because Mount was sticking deep and wasn’t getting forward to try and get the ball off Sarr and it left every midfield battle a 2v1 which Casemiro had no chance of stopping.

I understand the slightly poorer defense and lack of chances from Man Utd's side, but can we also discuss about how poor United were whenever they did have the ball and how they used those chances? I feel like in both games (Wolves & Spurs) our wingers especially felt very poor, lost and didn't know what to do with the ball. The decision making by them were left questionable most of the time and this lead to Rashford being extremely underserviced and frustrated (understandably). He hasn’t been playing to the best of his abilities, I agree with that. But you could clearly see him growing in to the game in the second half. He’s young and some people take a bit longer to learn certain things than others.
He’ll be alright in that position
E: he’s a left footed right winger. Most of the time he’ll cut inside and use his stronger foot. So you showed examples of him doing both things, and it clearly worked because of the goal. No matter if it was a deflection, he still put a good ball in to the right area.

@@MK12275 No he wasn’t. Rashford had a similar situation and was off side. I think you might be confusing the two. They showed the Fernandez chance afterwards and he was onside. Anyway , it doesn’t really matter because Fernandez didn’t know at the time. He probably partly assumed he was offside , however , that’s unprofessional for a footballer of his quality. He knows that what you have to do is bury the chance and score the goal and then ask questions later. You could tell that he was distracted because he immediately looked back at the linesman to see if he was off side.
You can’t afford to be guessing you are offside. That’s the difference between truly elite players with elite mentality and and good players with average mentality. The ability to do the exactly right thing at the right moment and be clinical and ruthless. He didn’t do that and it stopped United going 1-0 up. A Bernardo Silva or Rodri would have buried the chance and given the header full concentration ( eg head it down and give the keeper all sorts of problems ). Honestly, ETH summed it up perfectly in the post match presser. We dominated first half and couldn’t score. Capitulated defensively second half.
Ended the game with more xG than Spurs which is decent for an away game, especially given our horrid away form thus far under ETH.
Both games thus far deserved draws roughly, so I’m happy with 3 points and I’m seeing some progress in how we manage games.
With time, and maybe another signing it’ll come together.

I’m a Leeds fan and what’s happening to Man United used to happen to us a lot under Bielsa. We would often become disjointed when our front 5 players pressed aggressively and Kalvin Phillips (or Koch when he was out) would be left on his own to protect the defence for large periods.
Man United actually took advantage of our man marking system very well; putting 6 past us, 5 past us and 4 past us in our time in the Premier League under Marcelo.
They did it in a similar way to how Spurs did to them; they manipulated the man marking system in a way to open up areas to be attacked, particularly by having Bruno Fernandes drift to wide areas which pulled our lone defensive midfielder with him and left the zone in front of the defence wide open.
McTominay and Fred both put 2 past us which says it all really; we had nobody to manage late runners into the box as our high pressing 8’s were bypassed and our 6 was forced wide, it was actually brutal to watch.

Ten Hag's building a high press transition team that don't create chances unless the defending team loses the ball in the build up and Ten Hag's system doesn't seem to work against a good team?
He has to play certain players like Mount, Maguire and Mctominay who are crap at progressing the ball.
He will get the sack after another huge loss to one of the big six, when the team look incapable of reaching the champions league places later on in the season. It is as obvious as Harry Maguire's ego and sense of entitlement.
Hojlund had better be an incredible player or this is the end of another United manager under the Glazers and John Murtough's regime of mediocrity.

I think the portrayal of United’s style and system is wrong. The idea being given in this video is a Jurgen Klopp esque style of play when I think it is quite the opposite. The idea of transition is more about building up through the phases quickly when on the ball then it is about pressing and going defense to offense.
