The reason that the car gained a 9th gear after adding turbos is that the engine curve now has two peaks in it, so the smart gearing realizes that you get more power at one speed at a certain gear ratio, then more power at a different gear ratio at a slightly higher speed, and then more power at the first set of gear ratios at an even higher speed, now that the second peak of the first ratio is reached. basically giving 3 gear shifts from 2 gear positions. Technically this could give 4 gear shifts from 2 gear positions,
This is kind of weird but amazing that the game figures it out.
Is this how they get 26 gears in the f&f movies?

@@kANGaming It just calculates the power curve for each possible gear configuration, then for any given speed picks the gear with the most torque, then merges the curves into the final unified power curve

the stepper motor works like a controller where you can set a desired angle when activated.
the magic gears appear when a torque curve for a gear ratio will be more beneficial. mixxed engine types can cause it too
hi kAN! You can actually bind the , and . keys to buttons on your controller using Steam's controller inputs. These can by adjusted per game, and allow crazy customizations. It's really worth checking that out. Steam Input is what makes the Steam Deck usable for me (together with the trackpads), and it makes the PC experience for controllers much better as well.
The 9th gear is due to Screw Drivers selects gears based on which final ratio gives the highest power for that part of the curve. By adding turbo's, you've apparently created a scenario where 1 curve is the highest in 2 distinct parts of the power curve, thus creating an "9th" gear, which is really just the same as some other gear but reused.
As you said, 3 speed is probably best with how long shifting takes. I've made a car that got to place 36 in the final race with 3 gears and low weight.
Sadly because of how bad the controls for stepper motors are, making active aero is hard and can't be linked to the brake keys without also triggering on drive keys (unless the recent update fixed that but I didn't read anything like it in the patch notes).
Currently the best way to get better braking is to make the vehicle as light as possible, which is where the 3-shifter and planet gears come in handy. If you fiddle around with the planet gears and 3 shifter you may realize it is possible to make an extremely compact 3 speed with exponential ratios. Slap a bunch of engines in the front, make a 3 speed gearbox using 2 planet gears, a 3 speed shifter (and some more gearing magic to reduce the 2.3x from the planet gear to 1.84x per shift), connect it to the rear wheels, add some wings and you'll have an amazing 3 speed racer that can go up to 400kph. (Yes, the 1.84x difference between shifts is a hint to how to set it up.)
Sadly the recent update made the camera setup undrivable for me so I can't really race :( only build.

21:30 the game is reusing old gears, for example: it uses the first gear and jumps to the second, but the turbos increase the final speed, so when the car is at high rpm it returns to the first gear since the turbo is active and the final speed is higher, thus basically doubling the gear

Spoiler alert. There's a sound effect when you break it. It's unfortunately quite underwhelming, not like DCS at all.

Tons of additional parts (including top tier motors) found by free driving around the map.
Dont forget Stepermotors. U can use them for custem downforce.

@@yoitszaitz Not that it matters because their calculation was wrong anyways. Its 3x 2-shifter, so 2^3 = 8, not 2x 3-shifters with 3^2 = 9.
Notwithstanding the fact that as kAN said, 2 gears where duplicate. (see my big comment as to why the 9 is actually the "correct" number of gears anyways)

I figured out if you lay the vehicles internals out like a standard body on chassis vehicle it handles much better,also adding some weight,either weights or the body helps handling,though you'll need at least four gears to handle the weight
Stepper motors are pivot. You unlocked them, can set custom degrees and a button to it like trailmakers servo
If you look at 14:24, you're driving over 2 crates. They probably fell off on the front, thus you drove over them.
The 2 lost boxes dropped through the car during loading.

That drop off the cliff really ruins the flow of that massive bridge track. Dunno why they did it like that.

u can make a pivit point by connecting 2 parts with an axle so adjustable aero is possible
if you want to make pivot points use the axels instead of the connector pieces. Anything with a circle hole will rotate freely around those.

by the time I saw the final monarch I had a 6-speed car that made it up to 550kmph through 4 of the larger gas engines.
having the power and driveline following the foreword axis of the vehicle allowed me to do it while maintaining long gears and a reasonable center of mass.
i barely stayed alive cuz i have a fear of turbos. turbophobia
I’ve noticed that when you have an engine with a really peaky power curve the automatic gear system does really funky things

You can use axles to create free floating hinges and use the pistons to move those hinges

- in this game, once you combo the top engine and e-motor - all you need is the planetary gear to get good times (you also need downforce!!!). at most 2 gear shifting
- having too many gear you're just adding weight
- each shift you're mostly losing time over acceleration
- It's fun testing different unique setups but boring simplicity usually wins!!!

If you put a part on an axle it'll pivot around that axle. That can be used for your variable downforce
You can use the medium electric engines as low-rev superchargers because they have constant torque.
Things to do:
- Get all parts
- Supersonic build
- chopper build
- plane build (also supersonic)

Axles allow connected pieces to be free swinging, you can use them as pivots
I love this game for the same reason I love KSP- anyone can pick it up and make something that works, but someone who knows what they're doing can make something that WORKS. I do wish the building system was a little more polished, especially towards later game (things like moving stuff, changing direction of rotation for axles, having parts start extended or contracted), but still. You especially have made some very cool and effective cars, it's been great to watch :)
I’m pumped for the sandbox mode and wonder what the planetary gears could be used for.
You need to have more downforce at the back because of the drag makes you more stable like that

I built a 10 gear car and for some reason it's got 18 gears. The gear detection is really weird sometimes

The current gear display is just skipping over the 5th and 6th gears, so you've still got the 7 ratios that you had before, it's just bugged. Also pretty sure kAN misspoke when he said 3^2 is 8, 2^3 is 8, he's got 3 two position gear selectors giving 8 permutations, but two are duplicates for 7 total ratios. if you put it in manual shift mode, you can watch it shift through all the gears while sitting still and see which shift is creating a 9th gear. it's probably from 2 gears that shift twice one is slightly different from the other and through the later ratio's, it recycles a shift for another gear.

It doesn't really matter here, but if use Steam to manage your controller, you can open the Steam Overlay and use their configurator to assign any keys or buttons you want to any button on your controller, meaning you could assign ',' and '.' to a button. It also allows you to set up multiple control modes, corded buttons and quite a few other things.
I was trying to make a transmission to make the fastest vehicle possible. What I thought I designed was a 15 speed transmission ended up being interpreted by the game as a 40 speed transmission. I have 5 main gears with 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 planetary gears between the power shaft and the drive shaft. I then added a 3 stage gear shift before the main gears that gives me small to big, med to med, and big to small. I thought what I would end up with was 1st gear, high low medium, 2nd gear high low medium etc. but the game separates this combination into 40 different gears.
You MUST make a video about that.
Two 3-way shifters seems to be a sweet spot for running gas engines in the range of speeds you find on the current tracks. You can build something that's small enough to maneuver, but still has pep off the starting line and can run wild on straightaways. The game _does not like it_ if you try something more complicated, however.
I've yet to find gear ratios that use turbos effectively. If you have them, though, you could probably make really weight-efficient car that rides the turbos all the up its power curve.
You can double up the axels to improve your grip, but I was thinking what if you did one set on road and one set off road. You could even do road and dirt tires too.
The most powerfull engines are unlocked via the chests after you beat the final boss
When you were doing the test at the end to see if it goes to 9th gear, it went from 4th gear to 7th gear so it skipped 2 gears making it say 9 instead of 7

The car keeps pushing the back end out because the distance between the wheels side to side is longer than the axle's distance front to back. Length should be around 1.5 times width for decent control response.
kAN, you don't need piston for adjustable downforce, you have stepper moror whis is basically like a survo from trailmakers
you can also choose in which direction to spin the motor,aka opposite side
Kan for the long jump try it with little to know suspension to see if that helps

I see some technical explanations of the 9th gear, but also worth noting that now your car just skips 5th AND 6th gear. So the margins are so tiny or possibly something akin to Z-fighting (the graphics bug) 22:45

300 is a speed that you can go around corners with some different aero and tech
A big gear axle powered by 2x igncore 250 and 1x igncore 125 turing a small gear axle powering both driving axles is enough to complete the whole career without any transmission or high power engine, low weight cars are op
you could use a piston mucle and make it raise at an angle it put a piston at an angle
Also notice it shifting from 4th to 7th gear going up in speed but coming down it goes through 5th and 6th but never while accelerating
You should use handbrake more like when you do an u turn
I beat the final boss with My version of an F1 car. Rear engine, Rear wheel drive V8, turbo on each cylinder. Was fun. Still struggling to get all the chests, since some of them are high up or on rocky ledges I for the life of me I cannot scale.
Use hybrid system such that there is 3 speed electric power 1st < 1:1 2nd = 1:1 3rd >1:1 directly power ice output then 3 speed at their combined output such that 1st = 1:1 2nd > 1st and 3rd > 2nd here at every ice gear their is electric power to pickup lower end of the gear this is how you make best hybrid in the game for sure

You said we cannot make a pivot point in this game but you can make one by using a shaft instead of the wooden pins.
You would know this if you did the tutorials...

I have a 6 speed 441 hp car that can hit 300 in The Secret Queen, so 300 can be useful
There's definitely something wrong with the gear calculation in the most recent patch. I've got a design that uses a 3 position and a 2 position gear selector, yet it calculates as having 11 gears, and gear 6 is a LOWER ratio than 5!
I'd love to be able to manually assign a gear table, where I can say for each gear number what position each selector should be in. And then you could have a proper multi-gear torque/rpm graph rather than the weird torque/speed graph it currently generates based on a virtual dyno run and guessing at gear change timings.
But then, there's a bunch of other parts I'd like
- real brakes (because as you've discovered, it only uses the engines to brake, and adding turbos reduces the braking effectiveness because.... reasons)
- full and limited slip differentials
- another planetary gear set with different size of main/planets gears....
You mentioned wanting to make an all-wheel drive car - problem with that is that without differentials, you ruin your ability to steer. Once you get over about 100hp total, AWD cars have so much understeer you can't go round corners with any power on.
Oh, and you also mentioned there not being a pivot part - there is, it's called an axle! You can join two beams by a 2-long axle instead of a pin, and they'll pivot around that point.

Its a visual glitch. It skipped the 5 and 6th gears but kept the 7 speed. Basically renamed the 5th as 7th the 6th as 8th and the 7th as 9th. The car still only has 7 grars.

You have 9 gears because there is 9 different combinaitions possible with your three shifter 2
After finishing the career mode it's time to chase the world speed record. I currently got 305th position with 2142 km/h.

BTW you Idler gears are pretty much never necessary. I have a 9 gear setup, no idlers, more compact.

All the parts with a zero are unlocked you just have to purchase them in the parts shop
Pretty sure there is only 7 still, it always shifts from 4th to 7th skipping two gears
