      Can you help me plan an archeological itenerary to optimize travel between sites?
      I start at belize city October 26th then then bus to Dungrigia then Ferry to Puerto Cortes maybe a nite in hotel, then to Copan Ruinas by bus a day on site and a day birding then back to Dungriga by 3rd day. I want to most efficiently hit the so far 4-5 major sites in Belize I see one offset east of Ambergris Caye probably the last I will visit then 2 days on caye or diving.

    This is my favorite Mayan site ... They say it would have had over 120,000 people at it's peak. If you go, don't forget the ATM cave.

      Went to ATM this summer. It was amazing. I had a great and very knowledgeable guide. If you are really into Mayan history, ATM is a must see.

    Honduras has some surprises under the canape too.. with lidar it is easy to find ancient "hidden" cities....going there is an other story..read aventure. Anyways, often the tribes say that the structures were already there when they populated the area.. Sure it isn't the case with the mayas? Sure your education will be a douzy having Jaime Awe as your professor.

    Wonder what the Mayans would make of modern day tourism officials from Belize, Mexico and Guatemala competing to see who can evoke the most "wow factor" in their exhibits.

      Like another commentor said, the Mayans are still there. You can literally just ask them. A lot of Mayans actually work on the sites themselves in conservation and, I'm sure, tourism.

    The Mayan deliberately burying their own carvings in mud to preserve them from weathering is hardly the norm, is it? Admittedly Gobekli Tepe was said to have been buried, but nobody is claiming that there's a connection in this 'practice' of back filling, either. I personally find the idea that we're not going to see anything original in this site, with every thing on show being a mock-up, unbelievable. A replica means we can no longer distinguish its authenticity from a modern fake! It's a ridiculous arrangement where the archeologists simply meet the Berlize tourist boards expectations.

    this guy seems genuine, i like in the front part he says universities dont teach how to conserve a site very well.....that being said....about 48 minutes in, he sees a corn god and a turtle in incarnation......, I see a torus, I also see the double fish which upon extension becomes the double snake which is what goes up the egyptian staff that became the symbol for western medicine, and as we know those snakes symbolize 2 opposing polarity sine waves, such as that running up our spine creating our kundalini which is what feeds our own torus or life force, i see the upper soul, the ascended master or avatar falling and having the soul split into 2 polarities to be spit out of the mouths of the fish only to ascend upward and connect once again in this continous sprial of life....so yes, as you continue to become familiar with the symbols, you can decode the art

    • @antoniobeardall6520
      @antoniobeardall6520 7 лет назад +7

      From the time you bring in anything Egyptian to talk about Maya art you lose all credibility. Considering he has been doing this for decades, I would trust his judgment over yours. His sounds plausible, yours sounds like new age crystal hogwash.

      Egyptian staff? And here I thought it was Greek. And on that topic, I am not even sure that the ancient Egyptians did connect snakes with healing. Power and guardianship, yes. Healing? I'd like to see a source for that please.

      There actually is a connection between ancient meso-america and the egyptians. Maybe not the maya people directly, but remember who preceded the maya, the olmec civilization. The olmec people have statues that have the false beard and egyptian style headress that you would normally find a continent away in egypt.
      Here's some proof

    In Norse mythology Odin hung for 9 days from the ash tree Yggdrsl, the World's Tree that connects the 9 worlds...In the poem Grímnismál In stanza 35, Odin says that Yggdrasil "suffers agony more than men know", as a hart bites it from above, it decays on its sides, and Níðhöggr bites it from beneath....kinda sounds like the under world to me...quite a few other parallels
