I played this game so much as a kid, and I can't ever remember even getting half way through it. It's fun to see it played by somebody who knows the solutions.
I've finished this game 4 or 5 times now, from what I could see, they appeared to be stumbling a lot of the time and then 10 sec of nothing, then suddenly they go and do the exactly correct thing. Pretty obvious they had no idea but they had a guide. I watched a non remaster playthrough of this game that took maybe just over an hour, and watching this was painful in comparison. How he had Laverne almost done but only had about half of Bernard's stuff done was baffling, I never realized how late you could do some of the stuff I do right at the start of the game when I'm playing! You can grab the keys and get the crowbar, and therefore the stuck dime, as soon as you start controlling Bernard, this play had Laverne with an extension cord out the window before that happened! Testament to the game that it can be done so out of order that everyone's playthrough is a little different, but the pattern of stumble around for a while then read a guide and do the exact correct thing got pretty obvious to me by the end. Notice how he took bernard into the stereo room and proceeded to push the wrong speaker? He knew he had to push a speaker, but had no clue that it was the one to the right, and then he left the stereo on and left, you can turn that off and not annoy yourself before you even leave the room, as soon as the vomit has left the roof! Watching this was a weird experience for me. The one thing I know is that they 100% did not know what to do without the guide they were reading.
I played this so much as well, and I was hadn't been taught any English yet and my mother tongue is not even remotely related to English. Yet, thanks to television I understood a little and this became my favorite game.
I remember playing this game as a kid, and thinking how the off beat humor humor and art style was like being able to control your own Saturday morning cartoon.
I played this games so many times as a kid and adulthood - it never gets old! This is a games that shows gamers to think, troubleshoot, find solutions, think next steps, and how to enjoy adventuring around. I am in my 50s and I still enjoy this game.
This game needs a sequel. Maniac Mansion 3, developed by Ron Gilbert, Tim Schafer and Gary Winnick. I would gladly microwave a hundred hamsters to see that happen!
I was not smart enough to figure this one out on my own. Loved starting it as a kid, but as an adult I understand why I only “started” it. I never thought outside the box, and failed to learn when a new strategy was being introduced. Got stuck in the first half hour of gameplay. RIP Anyway, Thank you so much to playing this through and posting it. I never would’ve seen the ending if not for your awesome contribution to the world! :)
I didn't play this game when it came out originally, but i played it when i was about 18 a few years ago and loved it. Felt like i was playing a Saturday morning cartoon. Incredibly charming, funny, and rewarding
In the original Dos version you could easly give items to the others characters. Just take the item, select "give to" and click in the character's icon if they were available. Didn't matter where the characters where, at first they just said "I will use the cron-o-john" and cut to a fast scene of the character sending the item, and the receiving character (regardless of where he or she is) notices there is something in the cron-o-john. Laverne must be "out on a walk" to be able to pick up the item if she doesn't has the tentacle desguise. If she isn't the character says "I just waited but Laverne didn't picked the item". It was quite easy to send and receive items in that way. I wonder why this remake removed that feature.
I remember finally beating this game as a teenager (years after I played it as a kid). I consider it one of the crowning achievements of my teenage years. This game was so hard as a kid.
I'm upset at myself that I didn't know this was a thing. I never got around to finishing the original name. I always got stuck in one part in the future. I don't remember what.
They made Laverne's fingers look really creepy. I know they were drawn like that in the original, but they looked less squid like when they were pixelated.
I think this video would be an hour shorter if whoever was playing it just did the "quick flush" where you drag an object to the icon of the person inside inventory to send an item to them
Anybody else played this game as an adolescent male and kind of liked it when Laverne was hanging from the tree and gets examined by a tentacle a few minutes later?
I love this game, played a lot when I was a kid, but couldn't progress much until a friend of mine got a magazine with the walking through. How I miss those days.
I was waiting for a moment where you realised that you can use 'Give X to Y' with the player characters, rather than walking to and from the Chron-O-John each time.
Maybe that's useful in a way you haven't comprehended, or maybe it's an affect of society as it currently exists, or maybe she's just too focused on things that you don't notice. And yes, this comment is emotionally charged, without it necessarily being a criticism of you specifically. Just the general concept.

1:43 I seem to recall in the original version, once you'd established that the characters could pass items to each other via the Chrono-o-john, you could just directly give items to them by dropping it on their portrait in the inventory without having to go all the way there. I can't remember if there was a Give verb, or if you could just USE the object to do it. Though it only works properly with Laverne if she's in the garden, or has already gained the tentacle costume. Would save a lot of backtracking if it still works here.
IIRC, you don't have to have the characters all go to the port-a-johns to give items to one another. If you have the classic verb-inventory display, you can just select the item and click on the appropriate character's picture.
This game has me laughing from beginning to end! I love purposely trying to do stuff to objects and even the people just to see the character's reaction. Hoagie's reactions are the best! Best sequel for Maniac Mansion!
i'd like to see a third game in this series. it wouldn't even have to feature any of the characters from the original game or in this game, it can be just set in the same world with maybe references to what the original characters are all up to.
You don't need to go to the letrine every time you want to pass an objet from one character to the other. Just select the object you want to pass and click in the face of the character you want to send the object in the menu
Well geez wouldn't it be cool if the game explained *that* instead of the much more cumbersome process? I just finished the game and now I'm pretty salty about all of those needlessly slow treks to the chron-o-johns.
Hahaha I recently play this game and dicover that by accident I was so mad not gonna lie, so Many usseles trips to the bathroom Lol, sometimes I "regroup" the hole Team in the bathroom to make a massive items rotarion hahaha.
Gotta be honest. This game looks like someone put the original CD-Talkie version into _ScummVM_ and used one of those "high quality" filters on it. The soundtrack doesn't sound improved too much, either. *However*. It is still the fun and hilarious game from 1993 that I remember. So there's that!

Hi
I love the Lucasarts adventures. This one, MI1 and Grim fandango are absolute classics.
I'm upset at myself that I didn't know this was a thing. I never got around to finishing the original name. I always got stuck in one part in the future. I don't remember what.
Hoagie: "Later, bro."

Game of my Childhood.. Adventure games defines my gaming experience when I was Kid. I will always remember DOTT, Monkey Island , DIG ...

Ok overall Maniac Mansion is timeless and should be released for current systems
It's playable in Days of Tentacles, switch on a computer
Every time I tried my computer always ended up crashing. So I always wondered how it played out.

This game feels like King's Quest, Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion had a love child.

The graphics in this game were advanced for their time to be honest. As the natural successor to Maniac Mansion this was amazing work.

All or most of Lucasarts games would be great as Pixar films !!!
I'd agree with that!!
