I just LOVED this movie when it was shown on TV here in Brazil in the 90's. I was surprised when, years later, I discovered that Hutger Hauer's character was based on the popular Japanese character, the blind samurai Zatoichi, who has acted in nearly 30 films in addition to TV series.
I saw this when it came out with my father and we both loved this movie. Years later when Netflix started doing DVD mail in rentals they had around a dozen Zatoichii movie's and I rented every one they had. Zatoichii movie's were amazing even the remake that had CGI Blood was very good.
Just want to give RedEye props for spending the extra time creating that wonderful example (16:15) of how music really sets the mood of the imagery you are looking at. You make Mr Magoo super creepy!
This is basically an attempt to do the blind swordsman, Zatoichi (a Japanese samurai film franchise of some 20 entries) here. To his credit, Rutger does a pretty good job capturing the personality and style of the character.
Yeah, Rutger Hauer's character is pretty much Zatoichi without the awkward massage skills and there's several scenes that are basically copied from that series. Like when he shaves the guy's eyebrows off and the "I live here" line when the lights go out. Kind of wonder if there was ever a plagiarism case on this movie.
The Stepfather and the Hitcher team up to take on the guy from Walker, Texas Ranger. What a film. So much fun. You should totally check out The Hitcher too (the original).
I love that you covered this movie and I think I love this movie more than you did. Again I watched this when it came out and I was in my teens and it was super bad ass to us back then. Doesn't hold up as well now. But I went back and watched it a few months ago and it still holds up just cuz of Rutger Hauer. He was a legend.

Great video, but you left out the funniest scene in the movie: when dudes steal that old lady's car and she's packing a huge revolver in her purse, and she starts blasting. 😂😂 My dad even laughed at that, and he's usually pretty humorless with movies. I remember loving this movie as a teen, but later saw how cheesy it was. It's still entertaining though. The kid went on to be in the sitcom Home Improvement. This movie was loosely inspired by the popular Japanese film and TV series : Zatoichi which has about 30 films, 3 or 4 seasons, and various spinoffs and remakes. I have the Criterion box set. It's pretty good and often times funny. One movie he was pulling a rick-shaw type cart for a lady despite his blindness. For some reason he starts running the cart with him running backwards, which causes him to lose control and wreck the cart with the lady in it. Me and a friend laughed out asses off at that scene. While he was stumbling and crashing the cart, I yelled out in his place, "Ahhh, f**k, I forgot I was blind!" in perfect timing. Lol. The horror version re-edit at the end was hilarious.
