The Mandarin wasn’t inspired by MK. The Mandarin first appeared in Tales of Suspense #50 (Feb. 1964), written by Stan Lee and illustrated by Don Heck. When discussing the character's creation, Heck stated "That was Stan Lee'’s character, really. He wanted him because he was thinking of, oh, one of those old stories that they had years ago, Fu Manchu and that's what he said to me. He said, 'I want a character like Fu Manchu.'"
Same. I was just about to write the same thing but I thought I might as well check to see if someone else had already commented since I'm 2 years too late to the video. Although I must admit that in your post you have a lot more information on him than I knew about the character, so I've actually learnt something extra myself here today lol 😀
James Hong who played David Lo Pan is still acting at age 93. And if you want to ever review a comedic spoof movie, check out National Lampoon's: Loaded Weapon 1.
In 2012 when gangnam style was a big hit, some guys made a parody in the theme of this movie, "(David) Lo Pan style" and they asked him to be in it and he said yes (he is not Lo Pan in the clip but he is in it)
Loved that bit in the end where he breaks the statue as if he's always hated it and was looking for an excuse to bevrid of it. Such a small thing but hilarious.
I’m literally screaming YESSSSS!!!!!!!! Soon as I got home this was the first thing that Popped up and I’m so glad that you have joined the Dark Side. Also I love the fact that Raiden from Mortal Kombat was inspired by the lighting villain in this movie. Sucks that they are trying to make a sequel to this movie with the Rock playing Jack Burton but it’s in development hell and it might not happen (hopefully 🙏🏾).
I'm so glad you liked it! All the trivia I learned about this movie was super cool. John Carpenter is in my top 3 favorite directors of all time. I heard about the sequel and I think Dwayne Johnson said they won't be redoing Jack Burton, but a new character entirely. Hopefully that is true because Kurt Russell can't be beat
I love how they basically have Kurt Russell as the "main character", but he's really the sidekick. It, and everything else in this movie, worked perfectly
I love how this movie breaks the 'show don't tel'l rule and is still amazing despite that. Like, half of the dialogue is just straight up exposition, but it's delivered with such enthusiasm enthusiasm, it just as the general charm of the movie.
Thank you so much! This was such a treat, I have green eyes and since it wasn't super common in my area this movie made me feel cool 🤣 Now I work in Asia and I get asked are they contacts all the time 😂😂 This movie was so crazy and camp! I wanted the lightening guys powers.. thanks again hugs from Asia 🌺 Sidenote - Kurt would be considered the White Monkey of the movie ( the term given to Caucasian actors participating in Asian ads, movies or promos 🤦🏾♀️) I thoroughly enjoyed everyone's performance and Ms. Catrall did great although I read that the green lenses made her miserable 🥺.
When I first saw the thumbnail while scrolling I did't notice this was from your page and thought, I would love to see a RedEye Review of this one. Then I saw it again on my recommended list watching another video. Yay!
They are an homage to mercenaries from Lone Wolf & Cub a 1970’s manga-based 6-part miniseries that was edited down into 2 dubbed films “Shogun Assassin” (watched onscreen in Kill Bill Volume 2).
One of the greatest movies ever made! I love this movie, watch it as a young child and have watched it over 500 times. Jack Burton and a 6 demon bag...Im in 👊🏻
You can easily make a lighter do that, all you need is one with an adjustment toggle on it, pop the top off, open the valve, put it back together, your lighter is now a small flame thrower. Used to do this as a kid, the down side is your lighter will last like 10 minutes, and it's empty.
Excellent comedy. Jack Burton is oafish and foolish badass-wannabe who is completely out his league. .....except ironically in the end he lands an impossible shot and kills the main bad guy. Even Jack is stunned by this outcome🤣
A movie I have owned since I started collecting movies. First on vhs, then dvd, then a year ago I got the awesome blu-ray special edition. Always one of my favorites. But I own almost all of John Carpenter's movies and every one that has Kurt Russell. And I didn't know the trivia about the lightning symbol saying Carpenter. But when he gives them the potion before fighting Lo-Pan and Jack asks what it does, he says " huge buzz". Great line. Also when Lo-pan says " friends of yours?! Now this really pisses me off to no end!" Probably one of my favorite lines in any movie. Again great review my friend. You keep rocking it. And I hope I can figure out what the hell is up with my patreon to get back in on the voting soon.
This is one of my favorite movies and I'm so happy you reviewed it. You need to check out the DVD commentary track, it's just Carpenter and Russell hanging out and talking about random things half the time.
Gracie showing up wasn’t random. Wang knew who she was at the airport and told Jack not to bother with her. Plus Wang owned a restaurant, so it’s plausible Gracie knew where to find them.
YAAAAAAAASSSSS! I was so stoked when I saw you were reviewing this movie. One of my Top 5 All-Time Favorites. I have loved it ever since I saw it as a kid on HBO in the 80's. I was able to see it recently for the first time on the big screen and it was incredible. I want to get a white pickup just so I can put the pork cop express logo on it. Thanks for doing the review!
I just watched the Bloodsport review before this and when I got to this review I was hoping (and you didn’t disappoint) that you would do the other Mortal Kombat trivia. Thank you sir. Also, I laughed so hard when you did the Warriors clip. I was laughing BEFORE the sound bite played because I knew it was coming (again, you didn’t disappoint). Thank you again sir.
11:17 "Meth addict Predator" Aye must have been on a shit load of the blue stuff too 😅😝 This is the best one you've done in a while. Bloody love Big Trouble in Little China, it's such an underappreciated gem even to this day. 15:20 is just legendary! 😆 That's a cool tribute I didn't know about, so cheers fella.
One of the best movies ever. Also, mansplaining incoming!!!: I’m assuming here but I was a smoker for 17 years. The lighter is a Bic lighter and those lighters have a black dial on the side that near the top that limits the amount of vapor that comes out making the flame “safe.” There is a metal spring on the top of the rotators that make the spark. If you remove the spring then you also remover the limiting part too and …viola! The flame is ginormous now. Kids don’t do this at home. Carpenter, or someone on set, probably knew this and had it done so on film the flame would be more visible and wouldn’t self extinguish at the slightest movement. Mansplaining over. Yeah, I love this movie and for sure Kurt is an amazing actor. The commentary track with Kurt & Carpenter is also worth a listen. Same with their The Thing commentary too. One of my favorite aspects about DVDs are the commentary tracks. It’s a shame it isn’t normally included on digital purchases.
Hey buddy, just wanted to say thank you so very much for uploading great video's, great content always. Watching your video's always brighten me up, always make me laugh and make my day specially because I have sever depression and anxiety. I just watch and laugh at your video's and don't think about anything else, and in that same moment I don't feel and forget about any kind of pain I have. Crazy how that stuff works. Hard disagree. This is the perfect self-contained story, and any sequels would almost certainly be some contrived nonsense with a bigger badder Ancient Chinese Curse.
@@mallninja9805Lol It is great as a standalone but apparently Carpenter had planned on sequels if it did well and with him only as director I think they could have turned out good.

@5:08 but I never understood is that the yellow bandanas and the red bandanas both freak out at the three storms but weren't the Redmond mayonnaise connected to them? Rewatch the scene and you'll see like people in red fire at them or run away or try to fight them I never understood what was going on there like a three-way battle battle of the three gangs is that what you call a San Francisco showdown
At 3:27 when you are mentioning that guy can't see out of the goggles, you can actually see a lot. You live in Canada right? Our indigenous populations use to wear similar goggles up north, I've tried a few pairs. It's quite interesting, and I assume they wore similar things in other bright/snowy places in the world! A quick "indigenous snow goggles" google search will yield results!

I saw him in Everything Everwhere all at once" lately.
He was also in 'Revenge of the Nerds 2'.
This film is the ultimate example of throwing everything at the wall and all of it sticking.

This movie is so so good and completely "re-watchable".
Easily some of Carpenter's best work ever.
