Thanks for this Kev (same name :)). Just letting you know I've bought the machine because of your awesome review, unboxing, and setup here, cheers mate! You've got a sub!
Just bought one of these as it was recommended. I've not got the S model, just the Magnifica and a quick Google search tells me mine is a 1.8 litre capacity water tank where yours is 1.6 which is no big deal. Came here to see the unboxing to using as I learn better from watching rather than reading so big thanks for an informative video :)
I have mine set up with the grinder on 3 and using only the left-hand bottom button and ignoring the ones on the RHS. I pop up the ret on the cup with plain water. The coffee is much better like that. The amount is set up at the maximum 13.5 grams. My rule is for every gram of coffee 2 grams of water. I use only dark coffee beans
Kev, does this still hold up as the best budget bean to cup machine? I'm an espresso guy myself and have a few machines ranging from a Bambino Plus to the Flair 58, but my wife is more of a nespresso type but wants to get away from pods. She saw an ad for the Philips Baristina and showed it to me but that looks kind of iffy so I landed here.
Hi Kev, enjoyed your review, would you still recommend this in 2023? Its currenty around the £300 mark so am wondering if this is still good for the money?
It's still very good for the money, most of the other machines in their bean to cup range use the exact same brewing unit (infuser) and grinder, so the newer and pricier machines in the range mainly just give more features, more modern interface and so on. Ta, Kev.
Hi, great info on using our machine. Are you able to get statistics from this particular model. We have Magnifica S (work) and Magnifica S Smart (home). Thanks
I've just bought one, and found this vid really good thanks. The only thing is , could you lose the music it is really, really irritating and deflects from what you're saying.
There is no music?? Hehe, just kidding ;-). The problem here is simply that I'm an idiot, and I kept moving away from the Mic, so with the background music (which has to be put in the background really for demos etc., to cover a lot of the little annoying noises that would be even more irritating without it) at one level, sometimes it's too loud compared to my voice. I'm still quite new to this video stuff, but if you go back and watch my slightly older videos you'll see that they're infinitely better than they were ;-). Ta, Kev.
Hi, watched your videos and read your blog for a few weeks after deciding to add a bean to cup machine after using an Aeropress for a year. I went for the Magnifica S Smart . Thanks for the advice and I really like the coffee and the smart frother. Cheers
Hi Kev. After watching your really helpful video I bought this model to replace an ancient magnifica that I broke. I don't know anything about brewing so I put everything at a similar setting but my coffee tastes bitter (same beans), I'm not sure what to adjust to get the same taste. Any advice would be appreciated! Many thanks
Hi kev ive been looking at this machine i do like the look of it but what you be your recommendation with a budget of £350 great vid by the way please help.😢
There are barely any videos online showing how to create microfoam using delonghi-style 2-part plastic steam wand, and those few demonstrate how you first take the outer shell off. Why? What is it for? Can you create latte foam WITH it on? What's the technique?
Here you go: ruclips.net/video/332i7IHXKJQ/видео.htmlsi=RhwgRrywTgz1pTGr&t=113 you'll see me steaming with the 2-setting panarello and then pouring side by side with milk steamed by taking it off and using the pipe. So if you have the 2 setting panarello, that DeLonghi put on a few of their machines, you can do it like that, but if you take it off and use the pipe as a steam wand, it just gives you slightly more control over the texture. If you have the standard panarello with no setting, you have less control, they basically aerate the whole time they're heating the milk as there's no way to shut off the air intake. Ta, Kev.
Mine is a brand new machine (most recent model I believe ecam 12.122) and the steam wand just keeps popping off half way through steaming. It’s less than a week old. Cable tie only solution?
As a newbie starting out with bean to cup.. I can't decide between the sage express impress or a delongi... I'm still trying to do as much research as possible before taking the leap...which is superior in your opinion I love the look of the sage pro but think it might be too complicated starting out ,but then i prefer the pressure gauge on the impress but also the negative is it looks bigger
Wow, $200 more here in the states. But I had to have one after using one in Amsterdam for a week. Do you need to purchase the filter if you use only spring/bottled water? Thank you for your informative video, it’s appreciated.
Thanks for the kind words. It depends on what bottled water you're using, some spring water is very hard. Meaning high TDS, particularly Calcium & Magnezium, not meaning physically hard, unless it's frozen, all water is hard when frozen, hehe. Ta, Kev.
Just got this coffee machine for Christmas. Now to find a coffee bean that I will enjoy. Any tips for a decent strength coffee? Not too bitter. Thank you for the tips.
This was my only adventure into home espresso that I bought in January this year. No matter what I did I could not get the strength to my liking. I am not an espresso person so that goes against me. I exchanged it and bought a Sage Precision. Good review Kev.
Cheers Robert. Yeah bean to cup espresso machines aren't for everyone, and if filter is your thing the precision brewer is definitely a better choice and in my opinion among the very best when it comes to filter machines 👍👍
Hey Kev, new sub here! Love you videos but struggling to find anything online that shows how to get the best grind/yield etc from the Magnifica Smart S. I read your review of the machine which helped me to decide on that one. Could you help out at all ? My current settings are grind setting - 1, water volume 30ml for single, and coffee dial set to 3pm ( 80%) thank you
Hi I have the same machine but I want to make cappuccino but I don't know what coffee beans to use, and the volume of the milk , hope you can help me with this. Thanks for the video it was insightful especially for me who's a newbie when it comes to coffee making.

DeLonghi make solid bean to cup machines, in my opinion. There are pros and cons with each brand, but a lot of it is relatively insignificant, they're all really quite similar in the way that they work. Personally if I was buying a bean to cup machine now, I'd be looking at DeLonghi, Gaggia (especially the more old school machines, Brera & Anima) Siemens or Melitta, these are the brands that seem to have the most consistent, reliable machines. Philips are also creating some interesting machines, very good value for money. Ta, Kev.
I just got one of these at kohl’s about 2 weeks ago. It was about 1200-1300 and kohl’s had a 40% coupon. So I ended up getting it for a little over $800. In addition, kohl’s gave me about $160 in kohl’s cash. Since they had another deal that for every $50 spent, we get $10. So overall it’s like if I got for $680. Not a bad deal, right?
Just bought a new machine. One question, why am I finding unused preground coffee at the bottom of the tray? Am I doing something wrong maybe? And do I select preground coffee function on the machine?
Hi Ayanda, Are you using pre-ground coffee? If so then yes, you need to select the pre-ground option. Why you would be finding pre-ground coffee at the bottom of the tray i'm not sure, You might want to contact the Delonghi support team. Cheers Kev

Any idea on why my machine doesnt let me re set the amount of water it pours for each coffee if i press and hold the button it doesnt not flash or let me choose i have the magnifica s smart 250 and it says you can do that in the manual but no luck
In my humble opinion, it would take someone with an amazing palate to be able to detect much difference in shot quality from one bean to cup coffee machine to another, especially when we're talking about domestic bean to cup machines, and not the far more expensive commercial machines. When it comes to the espresso side of things, they all use a brewing unit and an integrated grinder usually with very limited adjustment, when you pay more for a home bean to cup machine you're usually paying for additional features, not improved espresso quality. Cheers.
There seems to be many Magnifica S machines on the go. Is there any difference in the coffee they all produce? Maybe they all taste the same. Who knows?
The Magnifica S machines out there are different only aesthetically as far as I can tell, except that the the S Smart has the clever panarello steam wand with the two settings as the Dedica EC685 has, which is a great feature I think. Cheers, Kev.
Hey Kev, I appreciate the review! There's not many of bean to cup machines that mete mortals can afford on RUclips haha. Do you know how this unit compares to the ECAM250? the dual mode steam wand on that seems appealing - using the steam wand without the sheath on my old unit ended up causing some damage, hence looking for a new one...
I would love to see more reviews on these super automatics. There are some other nice machines from DeLonghi like the Dinamica Plus and the Eletta Explore. Jura has some expensive but interesting ones too. Those can grind bigger coffee doses (14 to 16 grams). Cheers!
Hey. I bought a Magnifica S used on the internet here in Sweden. The owner had used the machine a few times and was not happy with the result and put it back in the original box and sold it after a month. I myself like espressos and lattes and therefore over the years had several full manual and semi automatic espresso machines the latest purchase was a Bambino -plus (Sage / Breville) for my daughter does not like brewed coffee and thought she could fix breakfast coffee herself with the Bambino when I no longer had the opportunity to make coffee for her because we got up at different times in the morning. It did not work for her despite the semi-automatic Bambino was very easy to use I thought. That's why I bought the (almost) fully automatic Magnifica S. It went well for her, I became curious about how well you could set the right coffee grinding and amount of water so I used a whole afternoon to regulate the mill, amount of water and the slider for intensity (I think it regulates the amount that may need to be adjusted depending on the type of coffee you use and how coarse or fine the grinding is) to improve the coffee and was quite surprised at how much better it could be. Today I also use the machine every day when I am in a hurry and use the others when I have more time. Ok it does not make barista made coffee but the result is very good for such a cheap machine. ( I paid 100 dollar for a almost new maskin)
Thanks :-). I was weighing the shots, which is why it makes sense to talk about the coffee in grams not ml, but it's about the same, a ml of espresso is a gram, ish.
Interesting. I think I'll stick with the separate grinder and coffee machine, but that seemed to work quite well. There was a slightly mumbly bit in the middle. I missed the price, but as I'm not buying one I guess that doesn't matter for me. I see you've been putting your fingers in the grinder again. I'm not going to try that.
Haha, thanks Jim - me too, but as far as bean to cup machines go, not at all bad for the money. Yeah sorry for the mumbly bit, that's mainly because I'm an idiot. The fingers, haha, I wish I could say they were coffee related injuries, or something really interesting, unfortunately it's really dull, I was helping my next door neighbour take off a set of conservatory doors and they fell on my hand. Oops! I had gloves on too! Cheers
I have this machine and I absolutely dislike it. I purchased it in December 2020 and it was working great, but low and behold the warranty run out and that's when the problems started this is the 2nd Delonghi I have bought, but I won't be purchasing another one again. I didn't find the customer service advisors very helpful either. It also feels very plastic especially the steam knob which snapped clean off on my last delonghi. I won't be buying a delonghi magnifica S again no matter how reasonable the price.
Kev... With regard to your comment stating DeLonghi dont test this machine before sending it out. Your completely wrong. Mine had residual water still in in when I received it new. Indicating that the boiler had been tested at pressure. Maybe that's why the instructions ask the user to clean everything before first use. Have a thumbs down for chatting BS
Sorry, you must be talking about another Kev.😆 This Kev didn't state that DeLonghi Don't test this machine before sending out. You must be referring to my comment "I can't imagine that's true?". You took that as me making a statement?
Terrible machine. Considering throwing it out. Makes a total mess when making ground coffee as the coffee falls down and leaks out of che machine making a mess in the kitchen plot. Cleaning it is always a nightmare.

Hi James,
I'm glad you like it!
How do you reset the quantity of the espresso?
I notice for the Americano it just keeps extracting through the puck rather than diluting an espresso with water. Surely this is very sub optimal?

Cheers
@@Coffee_Kev Ouch. I know the feeling. Just as well you were wearing gloves. Cheers.
Pretty good review apart from the really annoying background "music"
I got one but haven’t use coffee beans at the moment 🤭
Huh?
The music kills me
Yeah, it's not a great choice in hindsight!! Cheers

Nice video as usual! Just make sure you. Pronounce "Magnifica" correctly. With caffeinated love from Italy
Thanks 👍😀 re the pronunciation, I'm a Brit 🤣, if I try to pronounce it properly It'll end up like an episode of 'Allo 'Allo 🤣🤣
Dont add music next time
This was one of my older videos, I hope you see a vast improvement on the quality of my videos now.
The DeLonghi Magnifica S looks very plastic like 😐
I have this machine and I absolutely dislike it.
Really annoying music. The review could have been edited to make it less tedious.

Wow that's a long reply.
You could get a job putting glass eye's to sleep. 😁

Terrible machine. Considering throwing it out. Makes a total mess when making ground coffee as the coffee falls down and leaks out of che machine making a mess in the kitchen plot. Cleaning it is always a nightmare.
