      Ive got the Delonghi magnifica ESAM 4200 S. It was gifted to me as the machine pressure valve is too stiff and makes the machine not give any water as it needs too much force from the pump. Sticking a wooden toothpick into the valve and cutting the rest off fixes this problem. After a few months the toothpick gets eaten away by the coffee and it will need a new one. Works like a charm every time. Tried metal needle but that wont work.

      Just a few points:
      3:59 When I unboxed my machine, the grind size was set to 5.
      7:16 if you just want hot water, you can turn the steam wand dial to on without pressing the steam button.
      9:09 By default the machine is set on the Hard Water setting, which means you will need to descale very often. If you don’t have hard water, you can lower this setting and you won’t need to descale as often.

    Before installing the waterfilter you must fill it with water. Hold it upside-down under water en pump the air out till it is completely full of water. Then put it upside-down in the watercontainer and turn in under waterlevel to install it. otherwise you use only half capacity of the filter, because there is air in the top part of it.

      you can get a gravity filter, the candles last 6 months (or more, only they guarantee 6 months that it will kill viruses and bacteria, but you are not using it to filter mud, with tap water should go longer)
      I bought mine for 100£ then it became 150-170£ (doulton/british berkefeld/berkley) and 2 candles for 30£
      even had one made in Pakistan, named Mogul, not a shiny 304 stainless steel but some generic pots with 2 holes but was cheap, needed 2 candles and a metal spigot, gifted to my mom, we tested it with some muddy river water too and cleaned it nicely. over time you can save a bunch of money with a gravity filter.
      I was using that water with my Esam 4200 which has no filter slot, and had it on 4/4 water hardness in a ¾ area, just so it asks more often, I noticed that with filtered water it was way longer before I had to decalcify and the container looked visibly cleaner too.

      @@ramzk8092 I opened my esam, the ecams seem to be diagonal, pretty similar, that one had no removable spout, and it seems it has a few more parts to hold together. I think it should be a mini clamp holding the pipe, if that pops out can be leaking, if it doesn't leak, might just be something else.

      had 2 blue thick cup noodle plastic cups for 5 years just for that. it flushes on start (which can warm your cup) and at the end when turned off or 30 min eco mode is over, dumps it in the tray, which can get slimy and stinky if the coffee sits in it for days. actually I forgot it for a week, made my coffee and went to work, and when the hot water dumped after 30 minutes of eco mode, heating up the goo, my room was smelling of fermented coffee, dumbass flatmate thought it's 'body odors'. took me a while to figure out that my tray was full and it went rancid, and even a tiny bit of coffee spilling out can make the tray look awful. instantly swapping your cup with one thicker plastic cup just for that purpose catches the few drips and you will not need to clean the tray as often.
      also useful during decalcification but probably would go with a 1liter cup and a smaller one for this machine.
      hydrogen peroxide (h2o2) so basically oxygenated water can stop mold, most coffee grounds can develop a bit of mold when left in the tray for longer. after a while it can get very sticky from coffee oil and it's hard to wash it out properly, on the run you just dump out the tray and you leave tiny bits in it. I was lining it with some toilet paper (esam had a more narrow tray, ecam has a much wider one). Might be it depends on coffee or environment too, but I had thick mold on it and was super hard to wash out and came back on the next batch once the machine was older. hydrogen peroxide is produced by the body too, it's the mouth producing saliva with h2o2 to clean off bacteria, 3% hydrogen peroxide is even safe to wash your teeth with (destroys biofilm and tartar) but for cleaning you can go higher percentage.

    Delonghi instructions manual actually recommends not to use distilled water.

    had an Esam 4200 and gave up after 5 years, now I bought this ECAM that he has in the video
    so far, the main difference is the size, and the Esam had a better grinder, was easier to fine tune it, 3-4 was best setting, on ecam I went to minimum and still seems to work fine, extraction wise that's a small issue, if the lowest setting doesn't clog it up a bit, it means it's not grinding it too fine when you would need it
    for filtration: use a gravity filter
    doulton has one costing 100£, berkley is kind of the same
    they guarantee filters to work up to a half year, but since you not filtering river mud, you can use it way longer
    uk dulton candles cost around 35£ each, berkley black carbon ones match and cost more, but apparently they are faster
    I got ¾ hardness on the test strip that came with ESAM, I used it with tap water, on max setting 4/4
    after using filtered water, it was much more rare that it was asking for decalcification
    you will spare a ton of money not wasting on cartridge machines
    as for chlorine filters: just add hot water into gravity filter and by the time it filters and cools down, most chlorine will evaporate
    there is one in Pakistan that makes similar gravity filter, called Mogul but probably can be rebranded, basically 2 pots, one wit holes, the candles fit, it's a bit worse quality but you might get it for like 30-40£. aliexpress had copies too, some people complained on the candles, but if you get it cheap you can replace 7 inch candles easily, still might worth it. get a metal spigot on it for 4-5£, all of them had plastic ones, even british berkefield/doulton.
    for decalcification: use vinegar, get 70% one, it's cheap and you need less, I had this 300 ml one for 3£ and can decalcify it for like 20+ times. the branded ones are a scam. they recommended citric acid, which is vinegar, now they recommend lactic acid.
    people try to justify this bullshit. spending tons of money on delonghi specific decalcifier. how do I know? I took my esam apart and wasn't any visible calcification. the bigger issue is the flimsy plastic parts. for one, a 'filter' which is a tiny mesh with a tube inside a tube, gets dirty, costs like 3£ to replace. the 'water flow regulator' is a tiny cylinder with a magnetic spinner, a tiny hole that actually gets calcified and the solution is replacing it after 1-2 years or drilling a 1.2 mm hole in it to remove the calcification. my hoses looked dirty, but it was more like oily and black, still was working and water flow trough. same for the heater and all other parts. decalcification program does a pretty good job, not 100%, eventually you need to take it apart and see.
    if you don't believe me, just get a decalcification liquid that changes color. red-pink-orange-yellow as it gets used up, I tried it on a kettle and made it shiny, was crazy yellow. I ran trough the machine with the program and it was pink to orange, it didn't get used up. also you can get decalc pills or even powder for half the cost and lasts a decade with one machine if you get a big bottle of powder, put in water, mix it and use that. it's pretty basic chemistry. just don't waste money on coffee machine maker specific lactic acid. there is no reason they should dilute it so much and sell it so expensive.
    flush with vinegar. for this particular ecam it seems to flush and send trough the steam noozle so might not be necessary. for the esam it was all coming trough the steam nozzle. flushing goes trough the heater and then on top of the piston, cleaning it a bit, if it's actually acting up, and you tried a restart, and still acting weird, flushing a few times manually with strong vinegar, might remove a blocking part and save your machine. it's simple but you might need this. the steam noozle was a different pipe at the end, and also won't flow on the piston/infuser so flushing manually can be different than automatic cleaning.
    removing the infuser: for this ecam is behind the water container, there is a door saying 'open'. for esam it was a front door and was above the ground tray. there are 2 buttons, saying 'push' can be a bit intimidating at first, but you check a video on how to take out and put in, and it's super simple. you need to wash it like weekly after a while. if the machine is new it will work fine, but you get issues over time and the older it is the more issues. the piston closes on top of the infuser, so it's the most active part. also, yearly you might need to check the piston rings, small rubber bands, also take apart the infuser, wash coffee grounds and put some silicone grease. I didn't do it at first, later I figured how to wash it, even how to take apart, but after using it with 3 people, and often, it was bending a lot and pressured, so one day it shoot out and was a bit out of shape, can ruin the pistons and the suspensions and mess with the motor finding the right spot. even if you clean it often, inside it the grounds can add up, it's one of the more expensive parts but the main issue is that it has the most pressure on it, so it might be the first thing to give up.
    steamer: hot water comes out at 94ish celsius, it's ideal for tea and cup noodles too. just fill with water and use the steamer for water.
    personally I don't see the difference in freshly roasted beans and slightly older ones. I mean, if it's months, then you notice, but I would rather buy a good blend than just go for freshly roasted ones. I tried a few and paid 2x amount and didn't blow me away. meanwhile I found one that was slightly over 1,5x the cheaper beans and was the best thing ever (spiller and tait signature blend). don't be a snob. nothing wrong with cheaper coffee beans. and more expensive ones aren't necessarily better. for esam I liked the slightly stronger roasts, didn't like the german or swiss or austrian ones, but found really good ones from Napoli or Sicily. Amazon sells coffee at the same price as the companies, it's worth buying there, especially with bonus codes or subscriptions. One really decent seller is Der Franz, beats lavazza, and it's like 7£ per kilo for beans in bigger quantity (4kg or 8), instead of 13£/kg for cheap brands.
    for containers: there were specific ones that had this valves, it's basically the same rubber as the coffee bags have. tiny holes on a rubber fitted on a plastic circle, letting out co2 not letting it oxygen. you don't need to vacuum seal it as it releases co2 and gets pressurized. but honestly, it doesn't matter much, if you open a bag, put it in a few smaller jars or sealed containers and only open when you use it, opening it daily would ruin the seal anyway. leaving it in open air for 1-2 weeks would ruin it, but as long as it's not in oxygen it's not a crazy difference.

    3:33 1) Instruction says next - you can adjust grind level only while grinder is working. Otherwise you can break grinder or warp grinder rings, that affects on coffee quality.
    2) Also you can use food citric acid for descaling.
    3) It won't be superfluous to remove coffee oils from tubes and dispenser using special tablets, although Delonghi doesn't require that, same as some Philips models. I have a Nivona machine, and it requires that each 200 cups.

    • @xWrongButtonx
      @xWrongButtonx 8 месяцев назад +1

      @@dradriancicortas Ofc it can be used, as long you rinse at least a full tank of water after using it. Usually, I finish descaling process by flushing 2 tanks of water, that's 2 full tanks. That way there isn't any " vinegar smell" left on the inside pipes. As for the ratio goes, I use 25gr of citric acid per 500ml of water, since my tank holds 1.2l of water, I use 50gr of c. acid and fill up 1l of water. Since I'm the only one drinking coffee, in my home, and I drink only once a day, I'm doing decalcification every 4 months and even that isn't necessary. Depending on your usage, you might need to clean it every month or so. Goes without saying that you should only use soft water, in your espresso appliance.
      Important note is that you should check if any of your machine inner tubes, boiler etc are made from aluminum, if that's the case I would avoid using any type of acid for cleaning.

      I'd recommend the original De Longhi descaler. It's kinda expensive, though quite regularly on sale. And it looks like it removes more particles than generic descaler. At the very least I'd give it a try (and the ratio to use it is explained in the manual).

    • @laszlobandi6456
      @laszlobandi6456 Месяц назад

      @@xWrongButtonx all decalcifiers are either citric acid or lactic acid
      I was using vinegar like forever, I just wing it, it isn't super precise
      there are specific ones that change color when used up by the decalcification, isn't expensive, actually one of the cheaper liquid decalc on amazon does this. goes red-pink-orange-yellow. tried on an older kettle and cleaned it nicely, went to yellow once I was leaving it for a while. meanwhile the coffee machine just had pink to orange while on automatic cleaning. the liquid said it can be used again if it's not yellow. I bought it because the machine ran 5 years and kind of started giving up, like overheating and the flow was stuck, still not sure what caused it, somebody advised to just manually flush the machine with decalcifiers, for esam runs trough the steam spout and rarely flushes it and it's different routes. so I was pressing with manual until the container was empty. repeat a few times. went orange after a while and still was able to use that liquid to clean some bathroom limescale. anyway, it's not that crazy inside it. saw videos and mine looked so much better after 5 years than the ones I saw.
      one part that gets calcified a lot is the 'flow meter' after the tank, it's a tiny plastic cylinder with a spinning magnet and an intake on top and out on bottom. that hole supposed to be 1.2 mm but gets filled up with yellow goo for some reason. you can actually drill trough it, that's how a youtuber fixed it. probably I drilled a bit too much but wasn't ruined by it. so even 2mm is fine, but after 2-3 years apparently it gets down to 0.5 or worse and affects the flow. can be other issues with heater or top pistons, mainly connectors, but the automatic cleaning won't be able to fix everything forever. it just pushes the water back and forth, it's not crazy science, it's pretty simple. there aren't magic fluids that do much better than others. not that much that would justify the price.

      that's so weird, I had an esam and was way better grinder, probably bigger and the settigns made a bunch of difference

      @@timhinchcliffe5372 the grind size. I just tried now. changing grind size just made the button wonkier, now during grind I turned back and forth slowly and got more stiff so I think it's different now. on ESAM 4200 you just set whenever, size 1 was dangerously tiny particles that blocked the machine, 2-3 was a bit overextracted, 3-4 was the silky smooth so I just turned from a default 5/6 to 3 without running it and wondered why there is no difference.

    Excellent video. I have the same machine which I’ve slightly neglected.
    Couple points I wanted to make.
    1. De’Longhi recommend you only turn the grinder dial whilst it’s grinding and only one click at a time and even then it takes a few cups until you can taste the difference.
    2. Steam wand you need to heat up the steam before turning the steam dial, button top right side.
    3. Grinder cleaning, any tips on that?
    Otherwise amazing video thanks for sharing!

    • @laszlobandi6456
      @laszlobandi6456 Месяц назад

      had an esam, the grinder worked fine. the infuser gets dirty, and you need to clean more and more often, eventually checking the pistons and the rubber bands, new machine after a year then more often. the grinder was never an issue, for the ESAM 4200 actually costs like 100£/350 for one of the more expensive part. it's pretty sturdy build with steel biters all around.
      for ecam is a bit different. but probably same thing. you would need to remove back and side and top panel, and 2 electric connectors with pins, then you can take out, it's not fixed, but sitting on a rubber tray, the cables are shorter than that, so you can't remove unless disconnected. but unless you have issues like the grinder running then no coffee is coming or dry coffee spills after a brew, you shouldnt mess with it. I think you can grind some rice trough it to clean it, if dry coffee gets stuck in it. unless you grind marbles you should be fine.

But you should keep it obsessively clean if you want to keep it healthy (free of bacteria). Because it keeps the hot and wet coffee grounds inside, the atmosphere inside the machine is incredibly humid. Not cleaning inside for a month (as told on video) might cause new species to form :)

    7:26 Any tips for the parameters/settings if I manly want to drink long cups via using the long cup button? (without the diluting method)?

    • @laszlobandi6456
      @laszlobandi6456 Месяц назад

      use the steam wand for water to dilute, it's 94 celsius and quicker
      the long cup button feels off for me, 2 short is better or a long and short. main issue is that it won't grind double the amount of coffee, it more than a single but less than 2x. he said something about 7.8 to 13 gramms on the switcher. the coffee also provides a resistance to water, finer grind will stop the flow more than coarse, also it extracts better, during the start, blooms a bit, then presses it trough. in case of long button, in pushes trough more water trough the same puck at the end, and that won't extract coffee, it would actually be worse in taste if you put a second cup after the same amount.
      ESAM 4200 had water settings and we used slightly lower than max, you would need a finer grind to make a long cup stronger
      on ESAM I was using 3-4 grind but ecam looked weaker, now I saw that you supposed to turn it while it is grinding, slowly down toward the finer setting until it drips slower, you dont want it to stuck, but maybe sometimes breaks continuous spill. one side was slower flow for me, slightly broken line one side and continuous other was good. I'm still experimenting on my ecam. try Napoli or Sicily 7/7 darker roasts, german ones didn't taste as good. darker roasts are drier and break differently. you extract different flavour from light ones, I'm still experimenting on ecam, but on esam the slightly higher roasted ones tasted better.

I do know how to manually set it to whatever I want, but the wife REALLY wants it back to the default value as it for some reason doesnt taste espresso anymore and a lot of her recipes are based on 40ml EXACTLY.
    I was in contact with delonghi support and they said (i have model without powerswitch on back) to unplug, hold the power and espresso button key while plugging it back in, the lights will start flashing and after a couple of seconds it will stop and its set back to factory settings.
