I as a Staff Sergeant had an airman that was difficult! We went before the commander as the airman was up for promotion to Sergeant E-4. The commander had a box of negative paperwork that I was not aware of, however I still stood behind the airman, the commander decided to promote him after informing me if this screws up you Sergeant will be loosing a stripe, am I clear?? Before I discharged I asked the now Sergeant what changed him, he said You, You stood behind me and believed in me to do the job, a 100% turn around!!!

Just made btz myself, volunteered for a few things. Learned a machine in the shop that very few people know how to run. Kept a unique personality and attitude that stood out to people. Went up against one of my buddies who has a degree when I don’t, so everyone was expecting him to get it over me. Exact opposite happened and now people are mad at me and saying that I don’t deserve it over him. Spoke to the board members and they said I stood out among the rest when I went up to the board. Bottom line is set yourself apart from the rest and keep a good work ethic. show humility and professionalism and you have a good shot at btz. And don’t let anyone tell you that you need college or you need to be a people pleaser or kiss ass to get it because that’s what I thought and I proved everyone wrong and I’m damn proud of myself. And when you go up to the board be yourself and don’t over think it.

You can retire at 20 years from the air force as an E5 (Staff Sergeant). I retired as an E7 (Master Sergeant) but retiring as an E5 is frowned upon by colleagues because that shows that the person didn't studied hard enough and just wanted to retire and didn't want to make it to the next rank of E6 which is more suitable. In my days taking the test for E6 was a little tougher than what I expected. I retired in 1997.

Don't work for people who think they have to hold down the "inflation rate on EPRs " so they ding you. Start studying for the next stripe the day you make the rank you now have. Take the 5 and 7 level courses early through the Education office. The Clothing supply store used to sell study guides with mock questions. Buy them and use them. Future attorneys use something similar. Read the breakdown on promotions the AF times runs. If some person is talking about promotions, attend and take notes. Validate what this person says against what you know. some people will lie. Very common with full colonels who used to hold officers OPRs back in the 70s and into the 80s.

Yes, care (and show you care) about your job, do what's told of you better than the rest, but, even if you're the star Airman, and everyone knows it, be ready for the unexpected. There's perhaps nothing more disappointing than earning a promotion and getting passed over because of, well, let's just call it politics; this happens in civilian life as well as in the military. Whether you choose to stay in the military or move on to a civilian job, be ready for the nasty beast called politics because it's real, and it could happen to you. The good news is political injustices are the exception and not the rule, but should it occur in your life, just be prepared to take the hit (do not complain!), let it go, move on, and keep aiming high -eventually, you will succeed.
