    I was Security Forces (SF) in the Air Force from 1999-2011. The airman in this video is correct, there are a lot of different aspects to the job of Security Forces, but the primary mission of such is defense. There can be a lot of negative people in the career field but it I what you make of it. There are also many long hours. When I was in my time was pretty much spent in a "state of war" since both the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns were going on and getting hot. A normal day would have been a 14 hour shift by the time you got your weapon from the armorer to turn-in (returning your weapon, ammo, radio and other materials you received from the armorer to do your job). If something did happen close to the end of your shift you were there until the job was completely done, which included all paperwork being written, filed and sent to the appropriate authority for processing, That could include reports, statements, blotter entries, release of detained/apprehended persons paperwork and ensuring that those who were detained or apprehended were properly released to the appropriate authority. A 14 hour shift could turn into a 16+ hour shift depending on the severity of the incident and, if you had to be on shift the next day, you were still required and expected to show up on time for that next shift. Another aspect of the job is deployments. In the SF career field deployments are a big thing. It's one of the heaviest deployed AFSC's in the Air Forces and you can go anywhere. While I was in I deployed 7 times and it could have been more but I got in a little trouble (it happens). One cool thing about it though is you can be attached to other units from other branches of service. On one of my deployments we were attached to and responsible to an Army Brigade.

    I enlisted in Apr 75 under DEP, delayed enlistment program. I initially enlisted for 4 years, but my older brother who had been in the Air Force told me I would get 2 stripes out of basic, so I call the recruiter to see if it was too late to enlist for 6. He said no problem. Now, I went in guaranteed job as a Security Police technician, 811X0. Back them LE and Security were two different AFSC's LE was 812X0. My duties over 20 years, included Aircraft Security, basically working the flight line protecting Priority "A" aircraft, alert aircraft and Priority "B" aircraft. I was stationed after Lackland to 5 bases. First Minot AFB ND. Humping B-52's on alert, alert F-106 Delta Darts and the "B" ramp where B-52' KC-135s were located. I was there for 15 months, then assigned to Keflavik Belgian Air Force Base for 39 months. Alert Belgian F-104 Starfighters, and the weapons storage area, (WSA) as an Entry Controller and CSC Central Security Control (desk sgt) maintained the AF 53 desk blotter. Rear gunner on a Remington typewriter with paper blotters. Next base Seymour- Johnson AFB NC. More B-52's and alert F-4's and a WSA. spent 23 months there. Next duty station was Keflavik Naval Air Station in Iceland. Alert F-4's, E3A AWACS, KC-135 refuelers and Jolly Green Giant helicopters. Last base was Andrews AFB from Oct 83-Oct 95. Andrews was a different kind of assignment, when I first got there. In order to be aircraft security, you had to be at least an E-5. They preferred experienced SPs who had a good clean record and no disciplinary problems. I had to submit a photo with my package in full uniform, service dress blues in order to be accepted. LE was taking men and women right out of basic to work the gates and the contonement areas, The other reason for higher ranks was due to being able to pass a TS Yankee White clearance. Our primary job was to provide security for the Special Air Missions squadron, which included Presidential aircraft. Initially 26000 and 27000 the two Boeing 707's (VC-137) for Presidential use. Along with other VC-137 and VC -135 aircraft used to Special Air Missions, that required 4 SP's to accompany the aircraft depending on who they were carrying as the Distinguished Passenger. This included Cabinet members, Congressional members, and foreign heads of state. We were just called "Flying Guns" back then. I guess they are now called Ravens, which is cool. I was a flying gun for 10 years, visited 131 countries and 46 states. My last mission took place in December 94. We had to fly to South Korea to pick up one of the Army helicopter pilots who was shot down by NK. Dropped our passengers in Seoul and stayed at Osan AB till he was released. We flew him back to McDill AFB, where his home of record was. When we arrived, there were scores of people waiting for him and a large press pit behind ropes to keep them away from the steps. I noticed what appeared to be the parents of the pilot waiting, I decided to go ask the Aircraft Commander, if it would be okay if I invited this guys parents up inside the aircraft, he approved it. So, I walked over to the parents and had them accompany me to the step truck and told them to go up and hug their son in private. I came back down the steps with a big sh*teating grin (have to be former military to understand that line) after that. I took pride and preventing the media from getting their "money shot", of the parents and son's first encounter. Never a big fan of the media, still not. I also found a lot of time to go see the areas of the bases where I was stationed. You had your duty assignments and shifts and what not. But when you were off-duty, as long as you didn't stray out of the area too far. When out of uniform, you were just like any other civilian and went about your business. Granted our free speech rights were limited, but for good reason. We had to represent the USAF and the United States, and do so in a respectable way. No regrets for any assignment I had. Compared to what members of the SF's have to do today, it was a piece of cake. Now they are on AFSC, so one day you work LE duties and the next day could be SF duties. Oh, one other big thing as an SP/SF, was the Missile field, we had a different squadron who basically secured missile sites. Never worked that, but an entirely different schedule and sets of responsibilities. Maybe a former Missile cop can explain.

    I loved Tech School it was awesome 1992. Mine was eight weeks, plus four weeks of ABGD and the two weeks transition. But I graduated and got my Beret and Fort Dix closed down for a month because of a training accident which took the life of an Airman. They sent me to work 3 on's, 3 off, 12 hour shifts at Randoff AFB and you talk about nice that base was beyond awesome. Then we went to Fort Dix, where I had fun except for the jackass Air Force SSgt who thought he was a TI. Other than him it was a blast. We worked our asses off, running 12 miles a day and then doing full ruck hikes in the woods of Jersey but I had fun.

    Can you get me an Officer Perspective on this?

    • @SmittyC-hf9zt
      @SmittyC-hf9zt 5 лет назад

      I wasnt an officer for SF. But, being in for 7 years you see so many come and go. Typically as a brand new officer you'll work flight for about a year. Then right before you hit 1st Lt youll get scooped up for an office gig. Officers are the desk jockeys. Once you hit 1st Lt and in some bases/instances 2nd Lt you'll hit S1 section head. Once you put on Captain you'll move to Operations and then after Squadron officer School you'll eventually put on Major and start becoming a squadron commander. S1 isn't the only section that Lts work, if there is already an officer in S1 you'll work as the OIC [Officer in Charge] of S4 which is the logistics section. Another thing to keep in mind is that depending on the size of the squadron depends on the needs of those positions. So, its possible for you to be on flight beating the ground like the rest of the enlisted for your whole 2 years+ at a base. With that said as a Flight Commander you and your Flight Chief [Master Sergeant/Technical Sergeant] are the people in charge of the flight. Some squadrons are even so small that a Captain can be a Squadron Commander. Officers are only on station at a maximum of 2ish years so you'll move a lot and gain a ton of experience.
      In my personal opinion [SSgt with 7 years experience] I believe that officers who are prior enlisted have the better chops to be a good leader in this career field. I can't tell you anything about other careers but for SF, Prior enlisted officers have been awesome. They've been around the block if that makes sense.
      But, do your thing and best of luck to you! Hope this helps you.
      SSgt [separated 2010-2017]

    • @Kenstagator
      @Kenstagator 5 лет назад +1

      @@SmittyC-hf9zt Being an ROTC student, I'm a little crushed that I hear it'll be me behind a desk pushing papers for the majority of the career as I already have a slight distaste for PPT presentations, talking papers and briefings...
      But I plan to do my best to find opportunities to shadow my men and go on patrols with them and such to take care for them should the opportunity be given. Let me know if my priorities are a little to rosy eyed but my priorites in the Air Force will be in the following order. Taking care of my people, myself then finally the mission. I believe doing the first two will naturally move towards the AF mission. Any further insight in daily tasks, common problems faced during the job and anything notable you have to say about the field such as daily tasks, how often you may be deployed, etc.
      That would be really appreciated, thank you sir.
