Tactical reload. Competition reload. Emergency reload.
what is competition reload?
@@TheMaxCloud When he reloads his shotgun, there is a shell on the side next to the ejection port. In shotgun competitions, you have to slide that shell in while aiming with your other hand.

Having extra weapons stashed along your escape route is one of the smartest decisions in any action movie. This is why John Wick is so beloved.
man planned it out all
And that's counting the typical fact that John has a Glock 26 stowed behind his back. He literally came prepared in one of the best weapon/gearing up scenes.
It's also a subtle hint that he already knew he would probably be betrayed on his way out, since he stashed those weapons in the catacombs and not at the concert itself.
@foxdancemedia Either way, he was still gonna go after the man who blew up his house once he completed the marker.
@@DaScorpionStingI’m sure he could’ve forgiven Silvio for blowing up his house. Putting a price on his head though…
This scene is a testament to why action movies need to focus on reloads more. They add *so* much to this scene, being super consistent with the ammo count.
Plus it looks cooler.
Seriously. Not only does it help highlight the care and attention the writers/director/etc put into the authenticity of things, and the skill of the characters/actors, but... it's cool. Like, even just in a basic "do cool things in action movie" sense, handling mechanical things in a skilled way is fantastic eye candy, it's infinitely better than infinite ammo.
Breaking Bad when Hank is laying on the ground trying to put one last round in his gun, maybe not the most realistic example, but an improvement over the hollywood bs
The fact that the shotgun failed to eject and he had to manually eject the shell just gave this scene the little cherry on too of the cake xD
It's even more impressive that Keanu trains to the max to perfect his shooting and reloading sequences.

"Switching To Your Pistol Is Always Faster Than Reloading'
It wouldn't have mattered anyway as these guys seem to always magically miss him with their bullets anyway. A complete Mary Sue.
Gas: remember switching to your side arm is faster than reloading
John is unlike most people. He uses a secondary weapon as a primary, but he uses a primary weapon as a secondary.
I'm one of those people. My primary carry is a Glock 26(on me) and my backup is a Glock 17 or 19 that goes with me when I leave the house.
lol a useless secret in 2023 but that was the pro way to play Left 4 Dead. Use your secondary unless a serious threat shows up, that way it's fully loaded and ready to go.
He has no preference. Makes him dangerous.
@@TheRealHerbaSchmurba He generally seems to have a preference for his sidearm. While he is skilled with the more robust weapons, you can't hide those on your person and while they are useful, he can't use them everywhere. On the other side, a handgun is easily the best weapon you can have in most situations and is also the most flexible. You can't do half the things he does in the movie with a shotgun; he literally fires in midcombat as setup instead of just trying to lineup a killshot.

Friendly fire will not be tolerated
Its interesting seeing him switch from the AR to the Benelli. The first few kills, he fires 3-4 shots at every baddy even though with 12 gauge buck shot he really only needs one round. Probably because he's been used to double and triple tapping everyone he's been shooting at so far with the Glock and AR so his muscle memory is still following that, then after 2:48 or so it clicks that he's using his Benelli and he uses exclusively 1 or 2 shots per target for the rest of the fight. Very cool attention to detail.
They were most likely wearing body armor, which is the reason why it took him 3 shots or more to kill the first few people, whereas with the AR15, those 5.56mm rounds would punch through most armor in that close range.
That first time he emptied the shotgun in the group of guys was soooo satisfying to watch in cinema. Shotguns arent used that much in movies and when they are presented completely wrong so many times and also never used in CQB enviroments like they should be. That first time he used it was like anyone with a semi auto shotgun would use it on a group of bad guys. Just spamming that trigger.
@Vince He's probably using 2 inch or 2.5 inch shells.
@@Frenchfrys17 you can clearly see the shells are 2 3/4. But that would have been interesting.
@@tonybologna3 which is what I like. I take inspiration as that'll be be good enough to kill some coward pigs. What makes the John Wick Trilogy better than the competition
also one of the few movies where armour actually matters.
Censor Duck
And even then, the armor is not impenetrable. It can be broken through and has happened before. Especially in the 3rd movie where there are “armor improvements.”
Even with armor, it's not completely safe as seen in Chapter 2, where John managed to get injured by the violin assassin in the abdomen.
@@captainjakemerica4579 can't even think of any competition.
One of the things that makes this sequence so beautiful is the continuity throughout the scene. There are very few cuts and when they do cut, it's only to focus on a particular action. When it cuts back out, there's no jarring change of angle, you take up where you left off and continue the sequence. At no point do you get confused about where he is and how he got there. The lighting is consistent throughout the shot so when you look up the passage where the lighting is more blue after he's gone into an area where the lighting is more yellow, you still see the blueish light.
It's never boring watching John Wick action sequences. The cinematography in these movies is true art
I thought this scene was one of the more unrealistic ones , they had multiple chances to shoot jw down (at first) but towards the end it got better
"and when they do cut, it's only to focus on a particular action. " and to pause the shoot so its not one perfect long shot
I love the subtle detail in this scene that the longer the fight goes, he gets more and more tired from rolling around, grapling guys and reloading, aswell as stunned from the continuous gunfire that must be deafening inside the catacombs, his reaction time becomes slower towards the end.
But once a section is finished, he becomes more dangerous for the next sections to come until he uses god mode.
it also shows that although John Wick is a deadly and a feared Assassin, he is still human and therefore prone to the same weaknesses that the human body has.
Stuff like that is why John Wick is the best action movie series out there in many years.
@@tromboneman4517 Not just that but Keanu Reeves does all these sequences on his own - and he's in his mid-50s by this point too. Truly a testament to his fitness and physical health!

@@jevilz9858 I'm sure he's not dumb and can easily understand what I mean. Why are you being so mean? It's logical to think that the kdr is infinite, because that's what it should be in theory.
See this is why he was able to accomplish the "Impossible Task." He knew where he would be betrayed, where he would run out of ammo and had the perfect exit strategy. While everyone else was chasing him he was luring them all right where he wanted them.
and yet he still asks for santino's help to really get out of that world
The fact that Keanu actually trained like a commando to use these guns tactically makes the John Wick movies even more awesome to watch!
0:17 She shot her own guy.
Great observation man.
Looks like it, but I don't think so. She didn't fire off a shot until he was out of the way (when Wick killed him and he fell an inch downwards out of the way is when she fired her first round). She doesn't actively shoot or aim at her guys as well (evidenced when they are rounding the corner later in the clip). Plus, Ares (the woman) doesn't waste manpower and is too professional to waste her own people and 'accidentally' shoot one of them. She's just not that kind of person.
Watch it 0.25, see how there is no flare from her gun behind him? The blood spatter goes sideways facing the camera?
That's just what I believe at least. :)

Customized by Taran Tactical
What I love about this scene is that even though John is very skillful, he is not invicible. You can see he has been shot multiple times during the shoot-out, in the back, in the shoulder, in the legs..etc, but thanks to the suit and quick reflex he is able to fight back. Amazing

I think John knows the reload sound would draw enemies to come out from cover. Seeing as he is able to transition from shotgun reload to shooting from his sidearm so quickly (2:23), I think it was part of his strategy.
No choice
Think about it this way. If John had stayed in the hidden shotgun room(only available cover)and peaked around the corner while firing, he would have had to evade once they put rounds on his position. And thus he'd be pushed in the wrong direction. John knew when to evade and he knew he had to clear that hall aggressively to reach his destination. And that sidearm is crucial for very realistic close quarters situations where there's no cover and you have to reload or transition. I love the realism in some of Johns firefights.
No... Me neither, but then again we aren't John Wick.
I actually really like that little piece of directorial flair. You can see the guy pop out at 2:27 on the right. Wick kind of forgets about him, and the guy jumps him at 2:33. All those times Wick dives around a corner and ambushes somebody, it can happen to him too!

John Wick needs no NightVision.. He can even turn behind and shoot in one go while running with his back facing enemies.. simply wow
The lamps on their guns are a deadly givaway while he doesn't have one, so his eyes are more accustomed to darkness than his opponents
This is still one of the best action scenes in John Wick imo, even comparing with the latest John Wick 3.
Compared to some of the newer action scenes (like John and Sofia's shootout in the bazaar area), there's a clear goal here as he fights.
He constantly progresses from area to area to escape his pursuers, and he never stagnates just to keep fighting. He's constantly moving forward.
Some of the fights in John Wick 3 felt draggy because it would just be cuts of John staying in the same area shooting enemies that come from different entrances.
And of course, him preparing all the guns throughout the area not for the mission, but knowingly for this escape is just the finest icing on the cake.
Still my favorite shootout scene from the entire trilogy

Did it really take 10 shotgun shells to kill 3 people??
That was just over kill.
Which is why it doesn't make sense for him to have one
I think what you meant to ask was, "Why did 3 people get in the way of his shotgun shells???"
Gotta understand they have body armor under their suits they're in a universe of hitmen, and any way it's always better to double tap lol.
It actually makes it more realistic. If you get hit with a shotgun blast (depending on where of course), you're most likely still gonna be alive and moving around. If that person has a firearm, you're definitely going to want to double tap.
What’s the point of having a semi-auto shotgun if you’re not gonna dump all your ammo into 3 guys
Ar15 with that kind of magnifaction scope looks cool. Man i love it.
