When I started wrestling this is what my dad showed me. This match. He’s calm and collected at all times. Quick, smooth and nice with an underhook. In my head I was him.
And He got his ass wooped mean it's taken him A life to to attack And score at any time Hess like A Crack Head or a drugi He don't look convincing at all Hess A lazy wrestler
Schultz was one seriously grizzled vet. :) Kenny's athleticism at this time was just unmatched. He was definitely at the top of his game. This is like the reverse of when Saitiev beat him in '96, the young lion devouring the old tough lion.
I don't remember, but Nate Carr was the third best wrestler in the country that weight in those days, but he dropped down and competed at 149 for the Olympics.
I agree. All of the finals combined from this year's Worlds couldn't compare to this one match. And there were more than 10 others from the 1988 Trials alone...Chertow/Gonzales, Davis/Heard, Smith/Lewis, Carr/Metzger, etc., etc.
Right now is one of the greatest eras of USA wrestling. Kyle Snyder is an Olympic Champion, Junior World Champ, World Champ, and 2-time NCAA Champ as well as a Runner-up once. He is 21 years old. He hasn't finished college yet. Kyle Dake became the 3rd 4-time NCAA champ, Logan Steiber became the 4th, J'Den Cox got a Bronze at the Olympics and then followed that up by getting his 3rd NCAA title. USA wrestling is in a heyday at the moment. Cael Sanderson has built a powerhouse at Penn State, we have Spencer Lee opting to leave Pennsylvania and head to the Hawkeyes for his collegiate years so he can train under the Brands brothers. Spencer is already a 2-time Junior World Champ. He is a bright spot for the future. Every single weight class is stacked with talent. Cael is doing something very special at Penn Sate. But Ohio St., OK State, Minn, and Iowa all keep growing top level talent. The current state of affairs inside USA wrestling is very good. What we lack is money to keep these guys in wrestling after college. MMA is a calling to all of them.
@Fred Bouwman You might want to use a little context before you make that blanket statement. Monday was older at that time in 96'. In 88' doubt Satiev would beat Monday.
I am wondering, is it possible Dave was sick during tis tournament? I used to wrestle and he does not look up to par but I don't take nothing away from Monday for he is awesome wrestler.
I'm not an expert, but in both matches it seems to me that Monday is more of an explosive athlete, but is less technical and runs out of gas badly in the second half.

Jessica Noel wrestling is chess. Wish I learned that when I was competing.
oh yeah, the talent at this weight for the US was unbelievable. Two of my favorites ever, as well.
Great match qs. If only wrestling were still that exciting. Schultz is one mean mother.

Kenny Monday may be the most underrated athlete ever

Great comparison

Monday had a great trials rhat weekend

Monday was a freak of freaks.
Sad seeing all those empty seats in an area with the olympic trials going on. In today’s time (minus COVID) the place would be packed.
Awesome, I love the 80's 90's wrestlers seems like those were the good ole days of wrestling, what happened??

Kenny is so much more aggressive or something; it seems like Schultz can't do much.
:41 Dave’s strength
Strength and balance!
Just imagine you re 74 kg going into the Olympics with one of these two machines coming for you!!!!
And then facing Satiev from Russia who beat Monday pretty easily.
@Fred Bouwman You might want to use a little context before you make that blanket statement. Monday was older at that time in 96'. In 88' doubt Satiev would beat Monday.
Monday beat 1987 World Champ Varaev(Russia) for 1988 olympic Gold, apparently, Satiev hadn't made the olympic team yet(14 yrs younger)

They wrestled a brutal series
That is what I was thinking
My thoughts exactly, not the Schultz of normal here but got to give credit to Kenny don’t think Dave could of beaten him here anyway.
People liked Shultz but I think he did moves that should of been illegal to wicked
Kemp > Gable
Schultz > Kemp
Monday > Schultz
Saitiev > Monday
You always have to watch out for the new guy.
Great ANALOGY. Spot on.
All I see is 0SU pounding on OU
Not familiar with the shoulder to ear position Schultz was using. Monday outshines Schultz on their feet.
Superior athlete beats the technician. Monday spanked Schultz like a red-headed-step-child.
Stanley Charles Ummmm...You do realize Schulz isn’t a nobody right son?
bs a win is a win
Wow got caught again from a pancake
To much pressure on the joints some of his moves should have been banned
HOT WRESTLING SINGLETS!
